12 Great SNES Beat 'Em Up Games That (Almost) Everyone Forgot
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 июл 2024
- The beat 'em up genre, as a whole, has been swept under the rug in favor of other genres that fit the modern style of gaming. But back in the 80s and 90s, beat 'em ups were all the rage.
While it is true that it has experienced a small comeback with Rare's Battletoads revamp, the successful Streets of Rage 4 or the pixel art masterpiece called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder's Revenge, it is a far cry from the golden age of the 16-bit. The consoles of the early 90s seemed to have an endless supply of such fun games. The SNES is particularly well represented in terms of great beat em ups, which makes for optimal choices when looking to "kick it" with a friend or sibling.
But the purpose of this video is not to cover the best beat em ups that appeared on the Super Nintendo, as you already know them all, but to honor those brawlers that even having an extraordinary quality went unnoticed by the big audiences.
In this video we choose true hidden gems of the genre, little known either by remaining as Japanese exclusives (Super Famicom), or simply overlapped by other better known titles such as Turtles in Time, Final Fight or Batman Returns.

⚠️ All gameplay recording, game curation and opinions included in this video, as well as editing is completely done by me
Bits & Beats creates videos about the history of video games. In this channel you'll find comparisons, retrospectives, technical analysis, but, mostly, game curations with the idea of having an important task of preserving video games, and make them relevant to society at large.
Curation isn't just about digging up neat games, but it's also about preservation, interpretation, and using one's knowledge to make it relevant to people. With my videos I want older gamers to look back and remember the influence of video games on their lives, and new gamers to understand the larger context of the series they're playing for the first time today.
I put significant time and creative effort into each one of my videos, including research, digging into archives, playing video games and recording hours of footage, selecting specific clips, writing reviews for each title, and making a very careful video editing in the way to transmit both educational and entertaining values to my audience. Every video takes a lot of hours to produce, because I strive to give my audience a consistent, high-quality content.
Fidelity and preservation of the video games is essential in Bits & Beats, so the recordings are made with the highest bitrate quality. It is done this way to preserve original game look and sound through modern footage, with no superfluous additions. I recommend you watch the video at 4K and 60 frames per second to get the best possible viewing experience.
I hope you enjoy my videos and find them useful!

I lied with the title of the video... there are not 12 games, but 13! Enjoy! 😉
You are a wild man indeed! I'd be willing to bet from a distance of course you put two kinds of cheese on your cheeseburger 🤘 have all of these loaded on the SNES classic with iron commando in my opinion easily being the best.
@@MyBrothersKeeper101 🤣🤣
@@BitsBeats love the content brother keep it coming 🤘
Thanks for the treat... 😍🤩
Hehehe thanks!
Pirates of Dark Water was one of my favorites back in the day.
I forgot this one. It perfectly could have made it into the video
I never bested it, truly a hard one
Anyone who is a fan of Ninja Warriors will love Ninja Saviors (Ninja Warriors Once Again). It's brilliant and it goes far beyond what you would want in a remake.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I recognize the game immediately. Ninja Warriors is an amazing game. I thought it is pretty popular but it surely is not mentioned as often as other popular series like Final Fight in casual conversation, so I agree with you on this one.
It did get a remake recently. And I bet if you ever played the 3 screen arcade version you would never forget that!
Very true to life with the white female ninja with flowing blonde hair out of her uniform.. really added to her stealth as a ninja
Super Double Dragon stands as my all-time favorite SNES beat 'em up. So good, with a moves list ahead of its time.
Double Dragon Advance was both a far more complete, as well as far better, Double Dragon game that pretty much made all of its predecessors obsolete.
I love that game,i feel it shouldve been more influential, however i think it really influenced the aki wrestling games!
I agree. It also has the best graphics and animation of any beat 'em up, and of course the best music.
@@paxhumana2015 didn’t see many people over the age of 12 playing with handheld consoles
Iron commando has got to be one of the greatest overlooked beat-em-ups on the console.
Graphically it is a real blast. Like a 90's arcade at home
Definitely an impressive 16bit arcade style brawler with some good music tracks to offer. But you're constantly surrounded by enemies, the game is quite hard!
Made by the french guys who made the SNES-Brawler "Legend".
Iron Comando is impressive. In my top 12 Snes game list for sure.
@@sebastianp4411 yes, it has the same engine and SFX!
Good to see Brawl Brothers up there, one of my favorite SNES Beat-Em-Ups alongside Super Double Dragon and Final Fight 3.
Great video bits and beats showcasing these underrated beat'em up games especially brawl brothers since it is my favorite of the rushing beat trilogy.
Jaleco made some really good 16bit brawlers with many catchy soundtracks!
good video. love that you add info of the game. subscribed.
Knights of the Round is based off the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The Round Table was where King Arthur's court met and everyone was treated as equals. Depending on the legend the number of seats varies. Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival were notable Knights with Sir Percival being the one to claim the Holy Grail.
Ok, I always thought the holy grail had been found and claimed by Sir Galahad, but the 3 characters I always play as is Sir Percival, the only character out of the three who can have a dash attack and he might be slow normally, he can take the punishment but he hits hards with that battle axe, and naturally his dash attack...
I guess I need to go back to school if I forgot about that...
This video deserves more likes. Good job Dude
Greetings from Brasil
Shin Nekketsu got western “kinda” release this year as river city girls zero.
Iron Commando got a cartridge release like 3 years ago in Japan for the super famicom. Also this game used some edits from The Punisher arcade game sprites.
Legend is another overlooked gem on the snes, by the same developers from Iron Commando. There’s some stolen music in that one though… (yeah the devs liked to take some stuff from other games).
Stone Protectors is a very colorful beat’em up. But it’s too long it gets boring mid play.
I already bought the kunio kun no banka game YEARS AGO. Still bought the re release. Huge kunio-kun fan. I hope they bring the prequel over seas
@@gjergjaurelius9798 I’m doing a Kunio-kun Fangame and did a double dragon many around a decade ago. Will put a demo of the Kunio out soon, but I’ve posted lot of videos about it.
@@dieinfire920 , hopefully, you will improve on the game with some new features, such as adding new characters to play as in the game, actual life gauges for enemies and bosses, as well as display it in a way like more conventional beat-em-up/side-scrolling brawler games, and have a good story. Honestly, I always wanted a multi-dimensional crossover in which the universes of Kunio-Kun, River City Ransom, and Street Gangs meet one another and they have to stop the evil plans and machinations of an all new head bad guy. Oh, and this time, make Double Dragon characters playable in this game as characters that can be unlocked, as well as add two main ways to play the game, which are Maze Mode, which operates like Streets of Rage 2 and 3/Bare Knuckle II and III, the NTSB-U version of Brawl Brothers/Rushing Beat Ran, and the NTSB-U version of The Peace Keepers/Rushing Beat Shura, along with the complex and deep combo systems for the most complex beat-em-up/side-scrolling brawler games as well.
Legend and Iron Commando also almost use the same programming, the truth is that I only liked the graphics but nothing else.
Ninja Warriors was a constant rental for me in elementary school. Only gripe was no couch co-op but still fantastic.
Love beat em ups, definitely be checking some of these out, cheers.
I used to love “Rival Turf” by Jaleco as a kid❤
Man, would have love to have a Riki-Oh fighting game. A guy who rips and tears through bad guys!
"Rip and tear...until it is done".
Gourmet Sentai Bara Yarou and Iron Commando were rerelesed a couple of years ago along with King of Demons. I think who ever made Iron Commando also made Legend another good side scrolling beat em up that is like Golden Axe or Conan the Destroyer.
Definitely. They even share the game physics, SFX and death cry samples!
Pretty solid list. Some of these are favorites of mine, some I've never even heard of. Time to try The Great Battle II...
Pirates of Darkwater deserves a spot, it has some solid gameplay and great graphics, I just replayed it today, a real hidden gem.
Yea, it's a very solid brawler!
Man I remember that cartoon pretty fondly. Just like too many great cartoons, it's a shame it didn't have a proper ending
@@joshgilkinson8783 Same here, apparently the show was too expensive and Hanna Barbera wasn't doing so good at the time, it would be great if they decided to reboot the series and give it a proper ending.
Outstanding as always thanks 😎👍
Many thanks! 🙇
@@BitsBeats No problem 🙂👍
It’s interesting that even though Mega Drive was promoted as a arcade at home it had less beat em ups than SNES 😊
@Fernando Yanmar which ones? Apart of the Streets of Rages I wouldn’t say it was crowded with them
Splatter-house ,Golden Axe , X-men 2 the clone wars, altered beast, comic zone, The punisher plus many more
@@Martin-gf1hh many of these are average as best.
Undercover Cops is INCREDIBLE !! Thanks for having this port even if we cant play 2 players. Its a pretty descent port and the only one in console.
I won't lie. I got a little too excited to see Undercover Cops in the first seconds of the video. My favorite beat em up ever!
The Ninja Warriors got a remastered version a few years back. I have it on PS4.
It’s a fantastic game but it is HARD! I’ve never played the SNES port of Knights Of The Round but I am familiar with the original arcade version.
I loved how innovative Capcom were back then!
Iron Commando feels like the love child of Cadillac’s & Dinosaurs and The Punisher.
I only just recently dug into the SNESs library of beat em ups (I grew up with a Megadrive). And I’ve got to say, overall it beats the crap out of the Megadrive. I mean, nothing beats Streets of Rage, but the SNES has loads of great beat em ups. Way more than the Megadrive.
I love Pirates of Dark Water and Undercover Cops. The soundtrack to Undercover Cops is very Streets of Rage esq, love it.
Thanks for the (almost) because I never forgot Sonic Blast nor Hagane and so many others not listed on here.
It's really refreshing to find such a great video with such a great comment section, nothing but appreciation for the classics.
I'm pleasantly suprised there's no "Streets of Rage 2 is better than all of these" comments.
I never knew there was a beat-em-up in the Sonic Blast Man series. I have memories of playing the first game which involved punching at enemies like giant crabs or speeding trains on screen using a boxing glove and punching bag-like device.
There are actually two of them, but the second one is better, though. Honestly, both of them could have been longer games, as well as had more enemy varieties and better story lines.
@@paxhumana2015 Agreed, but the second one looked like they completely seen the many problems the first had and took notes, they fixed up just about every details, and sold it as Sonic Blast Man 2, it's mostly a new and improved version, also, you get to play with two players unlike the first version....
Another cool thing they added on this game is that clone machine, you get to fight clones of yourself at some point in that game...
I am a huge FIGHTING GAMES fan
But I would like to return to that time where The BEAT' EM UP videogames
ruled The world
Great game!
A really good list thank you.
quality as always thx
Every video on this channel just feels cool.
Nice to see a video that isnt just jizzing over Turtles in time, like its the only beat em up ever made,
I believe i use to play some of those game but i couldnt remember it, the only beat em up games i realy remember is captain comando and final fight..
Thx for your recomendation, that great battle III and kamen rider game seem to be juicy, gonna browse for the rom and digging it on my emulator..👍😋
Great list. Most of these games are more unknown being Japan exclusive, rather than just forgotten. Have you checked out UFO Kamen Yakisoban? Not an amazing game but would probably fit in here.
I love the great battle game series. Such fun
Knights of the Round reminded me of Golden Axe and Brawl Brothers was my game ... I beat the whole game either by myself or with someone else alongside me it was great 👍
4:07 that song for Ninja Warriors is incredible
Another excellent list man! I wish ninja warriors was a quicker beat em up we need a running mechanic.
Thank you very much! It's hard to make these selections because I have an audience that knows a lot about videogames. Very demanding. I'm happy to know when I get it right
I feel the same way about Ninja Spirit on the TG16/PCE. Ninjas are supposed to be fast!
@@subtledemisefox I feel you man I just started playing ninja spirit BEAUTIFUL Visuals but kinda slow.
@@SpaceDuppy yeah and the power ups are really unique and fun too. I'm working on beating it on my Wii U right now. Using save states of course lol
Dope list!
I purchased a SOR2 modded genesis cartridge that uses the sailor scouts as playable characters. My friends flipped when they saw it, and even more when we started playing it.
If you have "Brawl Brothers" and want to play the better Japanese version, just press and B,A,X,Y again and again at the begin when the Jaleco logo appears. The screen should go messed up and after that you should see the Japanese title "Rushing Beat"...
Interesting! What are the differences?
Great video. I would've added Combatribes. Few people know about it.
Ninja Warriors is an underrated masterpiece.
Ninja Warriors Again is the best in my opinion. Sonic Blast Man 2 being the second best and Double Dragon Returns (Japanese version) being the third
Double Dragon Returns would fit here well. Most people seem to remember the NES versions.
Final Fight 2&3 were also.pretty solid SNES exclusives!
I had no idea that Ghost Chaser Densei is on the SNES as well! 😱
Sure Gourmet Sentai Bara Yarou didn't stop for a dance routine. But they definitely stopped for a dance routine. 😄
Thought you forget about Iron Commando but you don't! It's an really impressive 16bit brawler with detailed spritework, a nice soundtrack and pure arcade atmosphere, a great hard but beatable game! But what's up with Pirates of Dark Water? To commercial for this list?
good list & great video series, but i wouldnt say they are 'forgotten' as they are more 'unknown' since they were released on the super famicom (japan) only and not the SNES
I was really hoping I would find more games I own in this list. As it stands, I own Brawl Brothers, Sailor Moon, which was the first non-U.S. released game I ever owned, Ninja Warriors, Knights Of The Round, and King Of Dragons. I’m surprised you didn’t include either of the Power Rangers beat-em-ups, or were they not overlooked enough?
Brawl Brothers is an amazing game ... I remeber to play a lot and finished only once ... quite hard game.
So the most of them are Japanese Exklusives that are not available in EU and US? So i dont wonder the people here dont know the Games. King of Dragons and Knights of the Round are well known. The Arcade Versions are in the Beat em Up Collection from Capcom. Undercover Cop looks amazing i see on Ebay an Original US version is beyond 100 Euro so it seems to be a rare one. Nice Video!
most of these beat em ups had dope music
Ninja Warriors. We kids were so crazy for that game.
Rushing beat is awesome. I cant beat it on that times 😂
SONIC BLAST MAN 2 was the game, the one true game for snes.....i really don't know what to say about NINJA WARRIROS except it is the number 1 game for snes in my books, the remake is even better a few years backs, and a few weeks ago finally got the arcade original, and i must say, for such an old game, playing it on an ultra wide tv.....well, it is something else, amazing to think an late 80s arcade game can look so good, and better on a bigger screen since the original game used 3 tvs to get that ultra wide display.
feel sorry my cousins years ago
missed out on some of these greats.
Legend es otro título muy olvidado del catálogo de SNES, lo llegué a ver a muy temprana edad en los 90s (=
I'm surprised that The Combatribes wasn't on here
I was always trying the new beat em up games. A favorite genre of mine for sure ever since I played Double Dragon.I owned Rival Turf for SNES way back in the day despite the cover art.
Thanks
I don't kow what it is about great batlle three but man that friggen sound track
Awesome Beatem up snes
Damn Ninja Warriors had a Badass Intro Song
TMNT4 is still ahead. But those are great titles!
The SNES came out in 1902 while the NES came out in like 1883 or something like that
not going to lie Iron Commando reminds me of ‘Cadillacs and Dinosaurs’ I have to try this out
I actually played the Sonic Blast Man series. The OST was clean.
Si pusieron knigts of the round, tiene que estar captain commando. Legend también estaba bueno dentro de los desconocidos.
Muy pocos recuerdan ése juego. De hecho se parece un poco al último título del video, hasta parecen los mismos sonidos.
Hmmm, I've don't believe I have heard of Brawl Brothers. Looks interesting.
The Peace Keepers/Rushing Beat Shura, its sequel, is a far better game than that one, though.
great 🎩👍
That Ninjawars intro is catjam
Everybody who owns a Switch should definitely get the remake of Ninja Warriors.
I personally would have picked Rushing Beat Shura (the 3rd game, sequel to brawl brothers) for it's multiple paths, multiple endings, screen clearing showcase moves and a tighter beat'em up in general. Regardless, Brawl Brothers is great and it's a good pick there's a cheat code to access the japanese version still included in the rom.
It's a good selection you picked, though I find Iron Commando a bit questionable. While it's a bit more unique than Legend, it's quite rough and I still find Legend (by the same devs) a better game.
Who in their right mind would miss these ?
Missing the combatribes
Gourmet Sentai até ganhou uma versão atualizada!!
Knights of the Round was one of the best.
Ninjawarriors was extremely advanced for SNES
Respect
The lack of "The Peacekeepers" seriously disturbs me.
It is difficult to please everyone, especially when we enter the subjective field. I always try to make a selection between the most popular and the rarities. Although covering everything is impossible! That game you name also deserved to appear in the video (but my favorite of the saga is the one I put on the list!)
@@BitsBeats , never mind that a. the sequel is longer, b. you have six characters to choose from, but, unfortunately, five newcomers, but all who all have some good new move sets of their own, c. the combo systems are deeper, d. the music is better, e. the character sprites are bigger, f. the character sprites are far more detailed than either one of its predecessors, g. the story is MUCH better than the ones from its predecessors, h. the combo systems are better, i. your characters have super moves, j. your characters have special attacks, k. most of the enemies are far better ones than their predecessors, with the exceptions of the Mutants/Cells, Helheims/Mutant 1s, and Spiders, and l., this game is, gasp, SUPERIOR to the Final Fight games on the SNES/NSFC, but, yeah, say that Brawl Brothers/Rushing Beat Ran is the superior game.
i mean most of these games are japan only and i''d argue king of dragons and knights of the round aren't obscure/forgotten.
I got two carts of TMNT TIT and 3 carts of super double dragon. Too bad super double dragon only had 5-6 enemies to fight.
Ninja Warriors was kickass!!!!
brawl brothers looks nice beat em up but the game has bigger issues with hit detection or maybe it was intended
The best of all the set is NINJA WARRIORS AGAIN, amazing music and gameplay only fails in the length of the game was kind of short.
Perfect
Thank you!! 🙌
@@BitsBeats me thank you
@@BitsBeats 😚
The problem here is that most of these games would viewed as copycats trying to cash in. For the toku and anime based games their short comings is rather obvious
I am surprised you went for Brawl Brothers and not the far superor third entry Peace Keepers, which, by the way, is REALLY good :)
Nice.
Was Jack in the last game borrowed from Cadillacs and Dinosaurs?
No wonder those games are forgotten, around half of the games on the list are sold only in Japan, I thought you meant about North America ( USA and Canada ) and Europe only without those exclusive/competition games....
forgotten? how to forget something u never heard of... half of the games are released only in Japan
Loved king of the dragons and ninja warrior
I gave up on all of them after playing The Tick
