    Though the Sega Genesis was particularly well-known for its shoot-em-ups, these 30 Super Nintendo classics (and overlooked games) were exemplary entries in the genre.

    Axelay was a great SHMUP because it was tailored with the SNES capabilities in mind. They favored level design and hazards over the amount of sprites on screen. That's something most developers didn't bother to do.

    BioMetal was also most known for its soundtrack since it features music by 2 Unlimited. I was huge into techno back then and reading that tidbit on a game article made me want to check the game out.
    2 Unlimited also had their sound ripped off by fellow Belgium artists The Immortals for the Mortal Kombat movie theme.

    Macross may very well be one of the best games on the SNES, and one of those I am deeply sorry we never got overseas. It was a popular import title for years, from what I could tell, and was one of the first SNES games I emulated.
    Well worth playing.

      The issue is really it's a licensed game at it's heart. After all Area 88 is a Manga/Anime and that's what the game was called in Japan and thus comes with alot of extra hoops to deal with.
      Now the arcade game US NAVY could have been ported, Admiral Sean Connery and all if they felt like it.

    I wouldn't consider 'essential' some of the titles of the list, especially Thunder Spirits. But I'm happy of many included games for people to know. I've only missed 'Parodius Da!' as an essential entry.
    As absolutely essential (but suffering from hellish slowdown) entries, Gradius III and Super R-Type count on recently released hacks that take advantage of SA-1 chip capabilities for fully getting rid of slowdown (transforming them in very different games ;D ). The author (Vitor Vitela) have also released FastRom hacks for Axelay and U.N. Squadron. Incredible and totally recommendable.
    Also as a curiosity, I'd try the japanese version of BioMetal, whose OST gives a totally different atmosphere to the game.
    Thanks for this spectacular video and for giving many of the obscure SNES shmups more visibility.

    I loved Rtype 3 from the minute I started playing it. Everything just seemed great. However, I didn't like the spinning boss room very much. I played it a lot through the years. I loved Super EDF too, it was playable and long with interesting backgrounds!

    The Genesis may have the faster shmups - but the SNES has the better looking ones. Both systems have a great selection of very good 16bit shmups to offer!

    • @derekbuckler9888
      @derekbuckler9888 Год назад +1

      I'm sorry green, but considering I've been gaming since 80 I'd have to disagree. Both systems did some things better than others, games like Axelay, Space Megaforce, or U.N. squadron did show how powerful the super nes was. But the Genesis was a pure sprite cruncher, not only was Thunder Spirits inferior to Thunder Force 3. But Thunder Force 4 is perhaps the best shooter ever made period. I'm also a fan of the R-Type series, but Thunder Force 4 would never have run on the super nes. I was always a huge Sega fan, but the last decade or so I've come to truly appreciate the super nes. It did many things well, but if you look at what Sega did with the Genesis, and Sega Saturn. There is no comparison, granted Axelay to me is one of the best shooters ever made. Either way, you can't beat the 16, and 32 bit era shooters.

    • @greensun1334
      @greensun1334 Год назад +1

      @@derekbuckler9888erek - the better looking ones. I doubt that the Genesis could run the shoot em up levels in Rendering Ranger R2 for example. Look at the amount of parallax layers (Genesis can do 2 + sprites, SNES can do up to 4 + sprites), and look at the colors alone! There are also many and sometimes huge sprites (the bosses!) but there isn't even a sign of slowdown. Both systems have different capabilities, like I said before. I'm born in '82 and my first console (next to the Game Boy) was a Megadrive btw. (edit: I just want to mention that I'm not a fanboy of either system, both are my all time favourite consoles 50/50!)🤜🏼🤛🏼

    There are some excellent shmups in the SNES' library, some can definitely compeed with the Genesis shmup elite. The SNES has amazing music as well, like in Space Megaforce/Super Aleste, Gradius 3, Super R-Type, Rendering Ranger R2 and on and on...

  • @greensun1334
    @greensun1334 Год назад +6

    I just want to mention there are actually no mode7 effects in Axelay! Konami used "just" some clever scanline/HDMA tricks to make the graphics so stunning! Axelay is the best looking 16bit shmup imo, along with the shmup sections of Rendering Ranger R2 and Jim Power.

    • @BaddeJimme
      @BaddeJimme Год назад +1

      I can see that the background in the vertical sections is using a much simpler effect. However, there is a big mecha about a quarter of the way into the game, with a large, smoothly rotating cockpit section. It's hard to imagine what the developers were doing if they did not use mode 7 for it.
      It is a very small part of the game though, and you could easily be forgiven for forgetting about it. It's certainly not much of a showcase as the video implies.

    • @opaljk4835

      @@opaljk4835not necessarily, that robot boss could be drawn with some single animation frames as well to create the same effect, because it looks not 100% mode 7 smooth imo... Just an idea, I don't know exactly!

    • @rickvug

      Totally agree with this comment. Three incredible shmups that go toe to toe with the best on Genesis. The problem is that if you take the next 27 best between the two systems Genesis absolutely destroys the SNES. The speed difference is real and being an older console Genesis got more late 80s arcade ports of classics.

Music is good, bosses are larger than life, 2 player options, lots of cool weapons to try, it was very versatile and approachable compared to some of the harder shmups on the platform. Tell me another shmup that gives you an omega laser that can 1 shot any boss 😯 the unique features it offers along with 2 player outweigh the few criticisms it gets.

    These are always tough on console because 1. You can't input quarters to continue ,duh, gotta rely on making sure you get enough points to get extra lives and 2. Some games, If you die, you don't drop in right away and continue, it leaves you at the last checkpoint, also you don't keep your weapons.

    Star Fox is great obviously. Thunder Spirits is a laughable port of Thunder Force. The R-Type games are good but better elsewhere.
    U.N. Squadron is great. I like it. Axelay is wildly over-rated. It kinda sucks.
    Genesis was better but not much. If you want to play shooters you a turbo graphics and a Saturn.
    If all ya got is a Genesis get Thunder Force III and IV, Eliminate Down and Gleylancer. If you got a Saturn get Hyper Duel, Blast Wind, Batsugun, Guardian Force, Salamander, Gradius Collection, Thunder Force Collection, Macross, Battle Garegga.
    If you got a SNES…you have my pity.
