Actually this lens fully opened is a Godsend! Why? Because fully opened at F1.4 looks JUST like a sharp lens that you had to put a ProMist filter on! Save on the price of an expensive lens, then save extra again the cost of a filter that you don't need to buy and then save yet again by not having to deal using the filter at all! What else could you ever ask for? This gives the same result out of the box, for pennies on the dollar! A winner🥇
Once I bought a Pergear 25/1.8 for Fuji X, and returned it right away. It had a blurry spot center-frame when stopped down. Inexcusable. Recently, however, I bought a low-priced TTArtisan 50/1.2 for Fuji, and I love that lens so much that it sits mounted on my XT-4 body while in my camera bag. Eventually, it will lose the “throne”, but it’s been there for over two months now!!! Never expected that when I bought it for $89. BTW, it has better bokeh (quality) than my 1st gen Fuji 56/1.2.
that pergear has the 3D pop, or is it just me? the plus is you dont need the magic myst filter on pergear to get magic. the word on the street is that pergear, ttarisans, etc have the low count elements and copy Zeiss, Leica and Voight depending on design.
6:02 - Lol best joke of the video. I think you're right. The lens is perfect for wedding videography! I'm selling my Leica lenses and going all in on Pergear ;) "Hobo Wedding Productions"
Nice to see you review something on the "low end" for a change. Risespray sells some $15 and $20 manual lenses for m4/3 and APSC mounts on Aliexpress with relatively fast apertures (1.6, 1.8). They are "cheap fun" when combined with the Olympus pen cameras. Many types of photography don't demand the finest sharpness a lens can produce to still be a good image.
I still don't understand videographers, they put filters on sharp lenses to soften them and belittle soft ones despite being much cheaper and having better tones at times And disregard the camera's codec quality when doing this. Also the lens has Pop (due to speed) but not the 3D effect per se, both are different things.
Really good video. You're doing better with manual-focus and understanding the aperture than you were with the Auto-focus systems. f2-f4 gave you the best results. Your collection of vintage lenses is pretty narrow at the moment and you haven't discovered the Canon FD lenses, the Pentax/SMC Takumar or the Vintage Nikon lenses, which I have a few. When coupled with modern Digital cameras they are really useful in understanding lense use as you demonstrated in this good video today.
Hey so I thought you’d actually use a vintage lens, vintage ≠ cheap manual lens. I use vintage lenses and old Minolta, Pentax and others are great. They don’t have AF (some Minolta A mount can with a Sony adapter) but vintage lenses can be super sharp and great.
Hey Kasey. You should check out Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls if you haven’t done yet. Took my wife there last week. If you take a 200mm FF eq is more than enough for that place.
Are you saying that with a manual focus lens the R does not show focus peaking? Whether the lens is manual/auto AF, or has any electrical contacts, should make no difference for focus peaking -- that is just the brain of the camera judging contrast in the image (aha! that actually is part of how contrast-detect AF works!) -- so focus peaking should work on all lenses. Unless of course there is a problem with the camera's brain.....
Multicoating is not marketing, its old-good technology, seems like lenses starting from 70s are multicoated - and this is always mentioned in specs. Single-coated has strong color tint.
Many modern lenses are designed using a CAD program, most companies all use the same engineering software. Proprietary coating and glass formulas are gigantic, and the reason many new comer (post wwii) lens makers are at a major disadvantage. Glass formulas give two companies a big advantage (Voigtländer and Leica) because their formulas are well over a hundred years old, and Zeiss was the leader and developed coatings. Another advantage to big three German lens glass makers is the the German government carved out an exemption for them to produce optical glass with lead, now banned in Japan and many countries, and frankly no other element does what lead in glass can do, advantage these three lens makes. Voigtländer and Zeiss enjoy the 70 year advantage of hand made grinding and polishing that German glass in Japan, each lens element of a different glass recipe developed hundreds of years ago impossible to replicate. In short the best modern lenses will always come from the three German companies. It’s why the interest in old glass is so popular, prior to removing lead and other compounds there were other lenses that had a footing, some of the most interesting came from Russia. People are discovering modern lenses just aren’t that good. Except these three German lens makers were they have the glass formulas, the leaded glass, the coating, and the best hand made artisans with modern computer designs. It’s why Leica sits at the pinnacle. Adapting old glass to modern mirrorless camera’s has exploded in popularity, and as one who’s been following this for many years the deals are long gone.
Nobody that buys voigtlander cares about sharpness anyways , 90% of these people (including me) put a Hazefilter on top. Main question is does that 130€ lens flare like the Nokton? If not its for the trash.
I think you could declare this lens to be an artistic lens, there is some worth to it! Stills definitely! I seen worse, so for that price, not bad...not good...something to try out and not break the bank!
I realise you aren't being super serious, but a lot of these cheaper lenses do actually have great optics (Not all - you do need to do your homework). I actually found this looked useable at 1.4, and seemed razor sharp at 2.8. F4 seemed softer, but maybe you missed focus on that. I have the XT4 and have the Fuji 16mm 2.8, the TTartisan 50mm 1.2 (Which is excellent) and the Samyang 12mm F2 (Which is ok, but I don't think offers much over my 16mm, although it is the go-to lens for Astrophotography). I really don't like that Canon. It was ok today, but on my big screen TV, I can see it colour shifting constantly as you move around. It looks terrible. None of your other cameras do this. Is it constantly adjusting white balance?? The Canon image looks cheap and nasty to my eyes. It looks soft regardless of what lens you stick on it. Fun video, as always :) Cheers, Campbell from New Zealand

I never clean my phone screen. It’s like every video has a pro-mist!!!!
Sharpness is overrated
It's also a bourgeois concept.
At least in lenses!
Sharpness yes but usually an unsharp lens comes with other issues like aberrations that ruin the image in other ways.

The Pergear is good value for what you're paying for it. To expect to get a top class lens for a Pergear price is "slightly" unrealistic.
Your photography narrative sessions are pure gold.

The autofocus pulsing is less noticeable when you're never in focus
It has no autofocus

I bought it for 108€ for my A7iii and its ok. I am fine with that lens.
Here to write another novel.😎
Didn’t know about Pergear
Thanks

I like Vintage because I like Moss Mold odor.
Canon FD on A7s III here.
those "Tony balls" have cat eye shape. No hairs though. That's a plus. Highly recommended!

See, you think you just caught Kasey taking stills but in actuality he just slowed his footage to 69 trillion fps. Cinema achieved.
You should have gotten the voigtlander APO lens instead, cause contrast is superior to sharpness and toneh.
If you stop down to F/69 I bet it gets pretty sharp
what is pergear...be serious, you should compare it with fuji 35 1.4
Multicoating is not marketing, its old-good technology, seems like lenses starting from 70s are multicoated - and this is always mentioned in specs. Single-coated has strong color tint.
Ah KZ ear buds.
I think it’s a good street photography lens.
The Pergear really did pick up the grey hairs in your mo!
What earbuds do you use?
KZ ear buds

For the price, I get it. Good lens to learn with
Give it to a photographer for Christmas
you kill me!
O man is this great or not!? It’s like €50? Isn’t it great?! No it isn’t, it’s a €50 lens. So it’s great! Yes it is!
please get yourself a pentacon 50mm 1.8 - angry photographer said so. get it.

I go the other way using my Nikkor 58mm .095 on a Daguerreotype camera. Video quality is a bit sketchy though.
If you believed in a global earth, that shot would've had 3d pop.
I think you could declare this lens to be an artistic lens, there is some worth to it! Stills definitely! I seen worse, so for that price, not bad...not good...something to try out and not break the bank!
Another film related comment from me. Try the Nikkor 55mm F1.2. That is the way
Wasn't that much more out of focus than the Sony...
"Just hoping, that I'm somewhat in..." That's *NOT* what SHE wanted to hear....

bro stop me now before i buy the s5 . last chance
Get S5II
If I want a lense to assist me to look like an idiot I will buy this one.
the pergear lens is garbage. it looks cheap, feels cheap and is a cheap ass lens.
What's a Full Frame 35mm F/1.4 that's better for the same price?
Someone is broke or got the Voigtländer and is mad hahhaha
That's exactly the reason I bought it.
Beautiful commentary about the Gopro 🥲
