There are LOTS of ways that people FAIL as they are trying to grow their vocal range.
Most people look at hitting notes in the completely wrong ways and they've attached all sorts of misconceptions about how the voice really works in their practicing.
Let me show you the only true way to unlock high notes and grow your vocal range in a healthy way!

As someone who's always wanted to be a voice actor, trying to imitate cartoon characters or other people really helped me a lot in developing my range and there's a TON of crossover in vocal techniques for both voice acting and singing and finding my musical comfort zone kinda just came naturally.

I'm practicing Sleep Token songs too at the moment, particularly Telomeres. A great challenge, helping me find out what my voice can do as I play around with placement to figure out how to nail those vocal lines. Awesome video as usual!

Telomeres is my end boss. I am most confident in Vore and The Summoning. But Telomeres is so hard to sing somehow. Maybe it is also just how much I love the song and not wanting to change it too much with my voice.. but I am not Vessel so I can only sing in my voice. 😅 what a dilemma. I wish you a lot of success with that practice!

Start doing opera voice warm ups. Everyone I went to school with for vocal performance had an over 2 octave range when we finished. Jeff Rolka is an amazing voice teacher and he has hundreds of free videos for every voice part on RUclips. A lot of the voice mechanics and technique for harsh vocals tie in with Classical and Opera, especially diaphragm breathing and breath focus.

You are absoluty right on this. It helps so much to first find how you can sing a high line with as light a voice as you can achieve (my voice teacher calls it sing like a disney fairytale princess) without strain and just being comfortabel, no matter how ridiculous it sounds. Once you internalize that, you'll notice you start hitting those notes in the way you actually want to more often each time.

  • @LINE4RR

This is super accurate. While my voice has like, TONS of shortcomings and I tire easily, this is something I’m halfway decent at. I spent all of my teenage years harmonizing to songs I listened to in the car, all in my head voice. That really helped me bridge the gap into mixed voice. Now if I could just do all of it without getting exhausted 😅

I'm not a singer, but I love to sing. But in recent years I have lost my high register, which was very high and I reached easily, maybe because I didn't train hard or because I wasn't a professional. I really wanted to hit those notes again and get back to singing better, even as an amateur...

Thank you, Chris! This video actually motivated me to try finding my mixed voice again. I gave up a few months ago, because I couldn't get rid of the gap between my chest and head voice - even after lots of practice and different methods. It's obviously still like that rn and I have a long way to go, but your video reminded me, that there are many ways to approach singing and discovering/developing my voice. What helped me the most from your advice here is the way of approaching high notes with the same mindset as when using head voice... 🙏

I figured this out on my own and it's what has helped me grow more than anything. I connected my chest voice by developing my head voice and working down. So, worked from the top down. For lower notes I kinda groan into it, the way vessel does sometimes. Helps me connect the different tones. But with head voice, it's soft then I add compression and get a clear tone. And I don't try to mimmick other singer, only their techniques.

You released this video this morning right as I was in the middle of learning, listening to, and working out "Chalk Outlines" by Ren and Chinchilla. Such a beautiful song. The thing Im trying to focus on more than anything is the storytelling, the emotion. Now just to find the right key that I think gives the best expression =)
Thank you again for all your guidance. Between you and Charismatic Voice I have been more inspired to improve my "voice" - and by that really, I mean my expression.
It's funny - I never had much issue and never spent much time thinking about things like pitch when i was first getting into music and playing guitar and writing songs, 20 years ago. But life etc. etc. and I spent almost 6 years not playing or making any music at all. 2 years ago, I changed that and started getting back into it. But my largest roadblock has been reconnecting with the emotion and expression of the music again. It's like I forgot how to. Anyway, all that long rant just to say that, you all are helping me to find that connection again every day!

This was super interesting! I'm not seeking to become a professional singer, but I'm curious about one thing as someone who has always found voice acting (and doing "voices" in general) especially fascinating: at what point do you see a crossover between voice actors and singers in your line of work? I remember vividly, hearing about how the VA who did the voice for Zim in Invader Zim nearly destroyed his voice because of that role, and it makes me wonder if/when voice actors might benefit from a singing-oriented vocal coach?
Also, we've got juggernauts like Ronnie Radke running around, doing old-school horror vampire voices for funsies in the middle of operatic ballads, and that's just rad. I wish more songs had voice acting...
Anyway, I guess this means head voice is my jam. I love doing random voices, and it does indeed help you find comfortable ways to reach greater highs!
(And even if I end up sounding like a cartoon character, at least it adds a lot of fun goofery when singing along with Vessel in the car. XD)

One thing that helps me hit powerful high notes is coming down from head voice. For example: in Ghost’s Little Sunshine, the line “when you’re all alone,” I have to jump into the lower pitch of my head voice and then sort of finesse it into the “just call me” and it just has that level of power that I haven’t been able to feel with my own voice before.

It's taken me the better of a year to regain what I lost, and even then it's inconsistent. Lowest note is C2, highest is D#5 on a really good day. But like I said, it's inconsistent. • @stuartpaul9211

What you're not telling people is that every little pitch shriek also has minute air intake. Which is what I assume to be support? Also those intakes before eackbpitch dance become a vibrato. Most people would try the big dreams in one blast. Hence the pitch burn out.

Chris, you know I hold you in high regard, but I have to say I personally developed my range with scales as well as crazy free noises etc. Maybe I'm a masochist, (lol) but I pulled up chest for many years inspired by the old school vocalists. I've had nose bleeds, had episodes of dizziness, but at an age I won't divulge, I can still hit full, powerful chesty notes. The key to my success is I forced myself up and down the scales and learned how to really exert up and down. Very much like a bodybuilder, I used progressive resistance. I practiced messa di voce like an animal. I became very strong in managing exhalation and really leaning in on my folds till they could withstand increasing levels of air pressure. I hardly ever lose my voice, because no air escapes when you seriously sing high and powerful.

You've done a great job of using scales etc... without having it be a pissing context with yourself haha... I can't seem to do it. It turns into competition unless I randomly release into higher pitches. I'm glad though that it works well for you!

@@chrisliepe I don't "release" rather I decompress to go up top. Not saying it's easy though....lol! Great channel Buddy.

Great video to analyze yourself and extract so much detail from it!
I'm currently practicing Bon Jovi's Lie to me and the chorus when I listen to Jon is powerful in your face the type of chest voice quality you would associate with. I on the other hand, having a lower placed voice have to navigate and use more mix at least that's how I feel, althought, it's not a super high song around G and A.
But I'm wondering should I keep nurturing this mix and it will get stronger eventually to match tonal qualities or try to be almost more "operatic" and push chest to have a bigger sound. The latter is much more demanding so I don't find it sustainable for the whole song... 🤔🤔😊

thanks for this video, Chris. even though i’m able to go high, i want to be able to expand my range, and not be in one place all the time.

I’ve been doing for years all the things you mentioned in first 2-3 minutes.
You always say that singing scales, is not what you recommend.
That may be good advice for exploration and studying your voice.
I think that ’programming’ scales in to muscle memory, is essential for learn to use the larynx-instrument properly.
What u gonna sing on top of the guitar but scales and intervals.
I do agree, that they do not necessarily help you find your mixed voice, without type of throat exploration that you represent.
I combine your exercises with Jacobs Vocal Academy scales and runs, and results are quite encouraging.

Nice video Chris! Do you know the Mooshroohead? They have a really cool sound and an atmosphere reminiscent of Slipknot.
It would be interesting to talk about songs like Simple Survival, Sun Doesn't Rise and Solitare Unraveling (or who knows about the cover they did of Seal, Crazy).

I extended my voice upwards in a different way than this, or else I did the early steps without realizing it. Some time ago I learned the siren exercise, where you make a sound like a siren and slide up and down and because it's not a normal speaking voice you're able to go much higher than normal. I realized that when I'm in that vocal mode my throat feels different, and then I practiced making my throat feel like it does in siren voice. That opened my mixed voice up, and now I can sing much higher without even thinking about it because mixed voice has become my default singing voice.
Before I learned mixed voice my high note when pulling chest voice was the top end of Living On A Prayer before the key change - after the key change I couldn't hit the top note any more. Now I can sing Fireflies by Owl City, which is entirely above my comfortable chest range, comfortably and with room to spare.
I would also argue that singing quietly and letting the mic do the work is a good tool for singing higher. I'm a 6'3 guy with a low voice, but give me a good enough mic and I can sing My Immortal in key without flipping to falsetto.
