The way this guy uses breath and whispering is amazing, reminds me if Chino Moreno but yet completely his own style. And his enunciation is just flawless, you can hear every single phonem.
You gotta listen to some of their softer songs to really get them tbh. Atlantic, Telomeres, Jaws, Aqua Regia just off the top of my head. This is kinda like Christmas morning. I think many of us who have listened to them for a while have had an informed, detailed breakdown of Vessel’s vocals on our wishlist and the wait was so worth it. Your analysis of Vore was fantastic, but The Summoning really shows off so much of what he can do and met it with outstanding info. I couldn’t sing my way out of a paper bag, but I love learning how things work and you pointed out so many techniques he flashed and choices he made here that my vocally-uneducated mind never would have picked up on. I’ve listened to this song 1,000 times before you posted this and from 1,001 on, I’ll have a brand new appreciation for what’s happening in it and how it all came together. I can’t thank you enough for that. It also gives me the best feeling to experience them vicariously through someone just discovering them, especially when they come away from it wanting more, so thanks for the hit of dopamine, too. If you’re looking for suggestions on where to go next and a one-take of just Vessel and a piano is of interest, check out Blood Sport (From the Room Below). To me, it’s a textbook example of the difference between just a performance and forging a connection with the listener through the communication of raw emotion using both words and tone. Anyway, thanks again for a phenomenal analysis. Can’t wait to see more.
Vessel really does have an incredible voice, if you listen to IIs recent interview you can see where a lot of their influences come from. Being Vessel is of my era in England, RnB was quite prevalent, as was Nu-metal, specifically bands likes Deftones, Korn, Linkin Park, Taproot and other bands, not distinctly metal in a sense, so releasing breath and fall offs were quite typical of the time when mixed with the RnB and hiphop sounds of the mid-late 90s and early 2000s. Mixing that with modern fry screaming and vastly smarter vocal manipulation is what makes Vessel such a weapon.
bout time you caught onto this band! what’s even more amazing is their live show. i was lucky enough to get to open for them back in September and their soundcheck was unreal. NO AUTOTUNE
The most interesting thing I find about Vessel is the tone in his voice is a conscious decision. When you listen to some of their other stuff his cleans are clean and he has the ability to add the tone in with tongue and jaw position it’s really cool
A youtuber called Jun Sim made this statement when he was analizing vessel that made me understand vessel's vocal timbre with his warm, dark tone. His tongue is raised to varying degrees from phrases to phrases to reduce resonant space and darken the tone. Also, his voice is placed ever so slightly back so that in combination with the tongue placement, it creates that distinct overtone and tonal characteristic.
It took me a minute to really snap into the vibe with ST, hypnosis probably is what got me. Vessel gives me the vibes that he has a general idea of his vocal parts but really goes with the moment when he records. I mean that completely complimentary
Chris, you are a phenomenal vocal analyst. It's so helpful to listen to you sing along and really show us how things are working behind the microphone.

I just did a vocal cover of this and what I found when deconstructing the chorus, is that the harmonies are absolutely phenomenal, not so obvious at first but even acapella the vocals sound powerful, amazing song writing
"Atlantic" is so deep! I love sleep token! I am addicted to their music. Greetings from Czech republic! Your analysis is amazing. Sorry for my bad English.
Glad u mentioned the vibrato cause I've been saying that about him in every comment I write on their songs that his control the way he uses falsetto which u don't here from modern metal (I say that loosely) vocalist that often is amazing but also his vibrato just makes him so damn unique i can't get enough sleep token right now !!

cannot stress enough how important Blood Sport (from the room below) is to get a closer, more purely produced look at his voice. just him and the piano- as intimate and detailed of a representation of his voice as youre going to get
Vessel is one of the most talented singers today imo, and sleep token as a whole are insane! They are just as good live. By far one of my favorite bands!! Worship
Chris, your videos have totally changed my life. I find myself singing every moment i can. Before bed, in the shower, cleaning house , driving, at work, etc. Thank you for all you have taught me and thanks for introducing me to new music. Haha now here's a selfish suggestion! Maybe one day you can analyze leave it in my dreams by Julian Casablancas and the voidz! I've been practicing my mixed voice to that song a lot recently. I wasn't able to distinguish mixed voice until learning it from your videos. Thank you so much again. I hope a lot of good things are coming your way.
When Vessel first starts singing, it gives me a bit of a tool/Maynard vibe. His timbre/vocal quality is different but I feel like his use of breathing, as well as the way he attacks the notes is similar. Think of songs like H. or 7empest. Also, the palm muted guitars and odd time signatures gives the starts of the song a tool vibe in my opinion
I was skeptical at first, then that chorus hit and I fell in love. Boutta search every last one of these guys songs and live performances. Please review them live too Chris, and thank you for showing me new bands to obsess over 👍😎 That instrumental section followed by that switch up was absolutely mind blowing. Had to come back and edit it was so clean
I love your reaction. Could not describe to other people why I think vessel can sing so incredibly well. You describe it so well and even better. I would be very interested in a reaction to Atlantic from the last album, but again great reaction, great channel. Instant subscription. greetings from germany
This is just a unique song, both vocal wise and instrumental wise. On the one end, we have chugs and shouting, and towards the end, there is that jazzy, groovy soul section that is so seductive! The reaction and your focus on the vocal aspects of the song makes me so happy, as there are very less channels that react to this. As a past vocalist that had the platform to express himself, but couldn't bcz of the pressure of studies, and the pressure to become a Doctor from the family (that's why I had to leave the musical genius of me behind, but I am happy nonetheless, as I literally saved a person's life like 2 years ago), I love these reactions a lot. Wish I was the lead vocalist of a rock/metal band, as music has been my life, maybe in another life I will get that opportunity. Anyways, really appreciate the reactions, and just keep up the good work, man!
Great reaction and performance breakdown, love your passion! As a vocalist I think you might be interested in reacting to either Bloodsport (From The Room Below version), The Love You Want or Fall For Me for your next Sleep Token songs. Prepare to be blown away. Vessel's voice reminds me sometimes of another great vocalist, Jeff Buckley (especially their use of vibrato). All the best!
At 40 years old, this reaction taught me more about voice control through air control. I can get a higher pitch pulling in all my air ,I'm talking triple inhale and hold for a slight moment before progression.
Oh, you did review the Summoning 😂 please more ST, love the analysis. This song has a lot of gritting in it, especially the whispers. You can feel your jaw clench everytime he goes in. Love it
Loved this! Great analysis Chris! You absolutely have to do Blood Sport (from the room below). It's so raw and emotional you can hear and feel it through the vocals.

So glad you’re getting into these guys, Sleep Token have very quickly become one of my favorites and I’m loving your analysis of Vessel’s voice and the nuance behind it. Listening to them has caused me to experiment with manipulating my breath to create those tones of emotion in between the notes, but the way he screams is just…..otherworldly. I started one of your courses a while ago and I’m going back in with this mindset!
Found you just recently, subscribed, and love your analyses. I'm so happy that you're doing Sleep Token again, they are so unique. Vessel's voice & control are out of this world and the drummer is unreal. Would love to see your reaction to Bloodsport from the Room Below (his rendition of Hallelujah from that same session is the BEST you will ever find), Jaws, Sugar, Atlantic, Aqua Regia, The Offering, Atlantic, High Water, and Hypnosis. Every song is so different and perfect in its own way.
Loved your collab with Will and Elizabeth on Chokehold. Would love to hear your thoughts on Ascensionism, its a completely different sound while still being 100% Sleep Token
Awesome content and insight. Thank you for the knowledge. 🤟😁 I'm going to recommend your channel to my singer of my band. He was actually having a little trouble with a song of ours last night at practice because of the song we were playing takes more power for him to sing because of higher pitch compared to the rest of our songs. When he jokingly complained on how it takes a lot out of him to do that particular song compared to the rest, I instantly thought "I'm going to show him Chris Liepe's channel".. Again, thank you for the knowledge. 🤟 😁
OMG ive just listened to a live ''Sleep Token - The Love You Want live @ Metro Theatre, Sydney 29/4/2023' IF this isnt EDEN (Jonathon Ng) then my ears have let me down... then the album is called... back to Eden... its him.. it has to be! The articulation is EXACT. I'm putting it out there, my man is making a come back/reimagining
The end gave me Pink Floyd vibes… especially with the use visually of red white and black. Musically the influence is heavy. He pulls a lot from David Gilmour’s style the guitar is Gilmour. Then the beginning has got a Panthera “walk” riff he sounds more like Maynard at parts. Just insanely put together. These guys have the chance to go big.
I saw your last video on them. I was hoping you'd have the pleasure of hearing this and hearing your take on it. This song is a roller coaster and I love it.
When I first heard "Vore" by Sleep Token in your analysis, I wasn't too convinced about Vessels Voice due to some auto-tune... but man, Chris, after letting their sound grow on me and digging a little further, I'm totally HOOKED now to Sleep Token. Boy, was I wrong! I can truelly appreciate Vessels qualities as a singer. What a masterful display of skill, emotion and moods. Please make an analysis of "Chokehold". That song gives me goosebumps.
Another outstanding analysis, of a Sleeptoken song! I’m enjoying how you dissect, the incredible vibrato and pitch, of Vessel’s voice. I would be very interested in hearing your take on their song, Granite. It was the first song I ever heard from them and it was Vessel’s constant change of tone in his voice, that intrigued me. It has a hint of the lead singer from Imagine Dragons.
Yo Chris I loved this analysis! One song to check out by them is “Atlantic” because I think it’s a great demonstration of the resonance shifting you point out that Vessel does so damn well!

now im gonna say something and im only gonna say it once.. check out blood sport "from the room below) you will wall out of your chair. The accents on his voice and a little fry mix.. MMMHHHHH soo good
Vessel is said to be a classically trained singer and in multiple instruments… #WORSHIP
I know this is a vocal analysis channel but that solo and the soulful piano that goes on in that time is just beautiful
What an impressive vocalist. I've never heard anyone who could hit those notes. It's like a rainbow of different tones and sound shapes:) Love it
Bro, between you and Rick Beato, there is so much passion and love of music. This is why longform is so necessary, and the technology for you to breakdown songs and really put a next level appreciation of talent is amazing🤘🤘
The notes you add to the song so entertaining. I’m not even a vocalist you’re just good at what you do! 😊
You should review and analyze Vessel's voice in Chokehold, Granite or even Blood Sport from the room below. You'd have so much fun and love them all. He's such a great singer I'm so happy to see him getting more recognition. Love your videos!
You did an incredible job articulating what Vessel is doing with this voice at a technical level in a way that was really easy to understand! Thanks!!
Its always great to see you dissecting my favorite vocalist's voice. You REALLY need to listen to Hypnosis and The Offering! There's some amazing vocal runs and technical stuff.
I love your videos and they help me a lot with my own singing. You're the best Chris
These are two of my favorite songs by ST, and they're directly related to each other!
cannot stress enough how important Blood Sport (from the room below) is to get a closer, more purely produced look at his voice. just him and the piano- as intimate and detailed of a representation of his voice as youre going to get
omg, Chris. What a class! what a voice, what a reaction!
Really awesome analysis.
Me: "WRITE THAT DOWN, WRITE THAT DOWN" as I learn the vocabulary for the details I gush about as much as you are.
Chris have you done the song Take Me Back to Eden or Rain?! You MUST!!!
Miles Davis used to say, "Music is what happens between the notes."
That overtone/whistle scream absolutely blows my mind...
It's almost like pop vocals over a metal track. It's so beautiful; INSTANTLY a new fan
It’s reviews like this that will push Sleep Token into the stratosphere. Vessel is an incredible lyricist.
His vocal control and range almost reminds me of Jeff Buckleys style
Jeff was a VERY different vocalist (freaking incredible) but I do see the falsetto similarities for sure. Vessel gets high up there!
@@WishMount yeah that’s what I meant. The falsetto similarities that’s all. Imagine Jeff tried to scream? 🤣
Have you heard his cover of Hallelujah yet?
@@frostfang1 absolutely breathtaking
Vessel is the full range of Breaking Benjamin with a more powerful diaphragm control. It's glorious.
I was skeptical at first, then that chorus hit and I fell in love. Boutta search every last one of these guys songs and live performances. Please review them live too Chris, and thank you for showing me new bands to obsess over 👍😎
That instrumental section followed by that switch up was absolutely mind blowing.
Just finished watching your video on Vore and you just uploaded this one. Perfect timing!
Oh nice!
If you know, you know. Worship!
Soooo glad you’re into sleep token! Your reaction to the highs were mine too ha I get it! Worship.
Glad you got to this song. Also, thank you for introducing me to
REN. Life changing.
You're welcome!!
This was one of the most enjoyable and insightful react video I’ve seen. I’d love to see you cover this tune!
I'm a bona-fide metal head. Period.. but I'll put on Usher then Elton John then slayer.. don't F me..i live music..
Yesterday, my 19 yr old, only daughter, sent this song to me.. it feels like my 25th bday. The world is mine...F'ers😉
And so is she*it was ALL WORTH IT..
Damn! Just damn!
I don't really know much about singing but I really love how you can explain what I'm hearing in a clear and concise way, thanks, Chris!
Been waiting for this Chris! You didn't dissappint! My favorite music related youtuber studying my favorite current band.
I also throughly enjoy Atlantic and Descending by them as well!
Been waiting for this one 😏
Thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. Will would be proud. Lmao. Worship!!
I'd love if you'd do an analysis of Sleep Token - Blood Sport (the room below version) to really get a good feel for Vessel's voice!
Loved your collab with Will and Elizabeth on Chokehold. Would love to hear your thoughts on Ascensionism, its a completely different sound while still being 100% Sleep Token
I’d LOVE to see this guy react to blood sport (the room below). His analysis would be unreal!!
awesome analysis! very insightful and interesting! Subbed. Worship.
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 195
Btw is there any possibilities for you to cover the band Karnivool?
Awesome content and insight. Thank you for the knowledge. 🤟😁
I'm going to recommend your channel to my singer of my band. 🤟 😁
You seem to be coming to light of the same musical journey I'm I'm right now. Love It!
Love your videos man, much respect from Brazil!
I saw your last video on them. I was hoping you'd have the pleasure of hearing this and hearing your take on it. This song is a roller coaster and I love it.
Now do a live version. He sounds even BETTER
Chokehold is coming!
@@chrisliepe Awesome!
Bro your rendition of the summoning was insane...keep it up that's the stuff we like to hear!
More to come!
@@chrisliepe trust me we look forward to it!
