I'd heard these guys were good and that I needed to check out Vessel, but I was NOT prepared for how deep, articulate and dynamic this band is.
I have not heard vocals like this is quite awhile. He's a blend of Maynard James Keenan and Noah Sebastian to my ears... Two vocalists I absolutely adore and have learned a lot from!
I go through Sleep Token's new song VORE for the first time and get to analyze Vessel's amazing singing and screaming. Join me for an enriching experience!!
His natural singing tone is nuts, he sounds like he has a lowered formant shift on his voice but naturally, coupled with his accent, creates a really unique tone
I love the way he somehow holds sounds between his lips and teeth and how it's changed when he releases it.
Because he places his tongue higher up and further back in his voice to lower the amount of resonance from phrase to phrase so his voice sounds naturally low coupled with low undertones.
Literally thought he had some kind of vocal overlay on all his stuff when i first heard sleep token lmaoo
@RespiteofChampions i just tried that and i think thats it 😮
He uses a vocoder a lot too btw. Could be why they perform with masks
Historically, Vessel is always very very forward in the mix. This happens to be one of two songs that have a "blackened" feel and in both instances the vocal is mixed back. There's so many amazing Sleep Token songs. Check out Higher, or Granite!
I was gonna say that i dont like too much that the vocals are mixed this much in the back, but im glad is not what they always do!
Vore is about being swallowed both in definition and in the song. They pushed him back in the mix for this so it feels like he's been eaten by it and sounds super surrounded. I didn't realize until it was mentioned in the video but it's such a cool stylistic choice
Ya, in fact Vessel's shriek sounds like George Clarke from Deafheaven during the Sunbather era, very behind in the mix.
Vessel's use of falsetto is so incredibly unique I swear. Great analysis!!
Vessel is special bro. U NEED to dive into some of there other records like”The Summoning” “Aqua Regia” and “Chokehold”
that one part in the intro of chokehold will forever give me chills
@@jesse6779 yoooooo for real tho! That’s my favorite record of there’s
@@pennyboy211 oh chokehold has been on repeat since I first heard it, every single member of sleep token is just unbelievably talented, they’re mind blowing and I hope I never figure out who they actually are
@@jesse6779I repeat the first acapella part of the song 5 times haha
sleep token - blood sport (the room below) would be a nice choice. live, good singing and distortion examples and amazing song
Thanks for the recommendation!
This is such a good vocal performance and sits against just a piano (the room below version). You’re going to have fun. I’m ex A&R for Polydor (90s mostly) and I’ve only just got back into music because of sleep token and Kim Dracula (burned out scouting and demo listening)
This is the one.
What a great track and vocal performance that is. 100% pure emotion
Oh please yes. So much to unpack on that track. And definitely do the room below version, the album version is just.. Nowhere near as impactful.
Watched them open for Nothing More and they blew me away I could not stop focusing on everything they did.
Nothing More is amazing too!
Same here! I was there for Nothing More, but was blown away by Sleep Token. 🤘
Oh damn. That's something I would've loved to see.
I saw Nothing More AND Sleep Token last week just before Slipknot :). I enjoyed all the bands!
So psyched you gave them a listen. I’m surprised more vocal coaches haven’t dug into Vessel’s voice to this point. It’s exceptional and there’s so much going on it in technique-wise. They have plenty of songs with the vocals pulled forward to check out. Two solid options are “Alkaline” and “Chokehold.” No harsh vocals in those and both have sections that are just Vessel and some synth so his voice comes across extremely clear. Of course, if you want a grab bag of vocal styles out of him in a single song, “The Summoning” is the one.
I’ve been wanting the charismatic voice to check them out for years now haha
@@AwfulWeather5684 same! I can’t believe it hasn’t happened. Even Will Ramos told her to check them out. When she finally does, I have a feeling she’s going down the rabbit hole.
This song is my new favorite on my playlist sick 🤘🏻
yes i agree
@@UnXplainable1 @Pumpkin Cemetery This may be a bit late, but funny you should mention it...ruclips.net/video/u2PKkmWmif8/видео.html
The way he can effortlessly switch between harsh and clean vocals is insane, he's just so immensely talented, just love this song
The Summoning really shows off Vessel's diversity and range. He's just as good live, too. The whole group is massively talented, but especially Vessel and II (drums). For older stuff, try Gods, Jaws, Blood Sport (from the room below), Higher, The Offering.
Welcome to the cult. Worship.
what cult? is the band an actual cult?
@@valbonaivezaj140 obviously I was joking.
Lol, yes and no. It's like professional wrestling. It's 200% serious, and 200% a joke
Just listen to their entire catalogue. Vessel is the absolute best !!
Holy shit, that's a hell of a song to start off with haha. I've been wanting you to check out Sleep Token for years now, I'm stoked that you finally have!
Ya man... I didn't know what I was missing!!
Vessel has such an unique voice and feels fresh and is simply amazing!
Another thing about Vessel is that he has a masterful use of diction! In a lot of their other songs he is really intentional and expressive with his consonants.
I had no idea that’s what it’s called. Thank you. I listen to a lot of EDM with female singers and they do the same type of thing. It’s one of the many things that attracts me to EDM.
It's cool how you've listened to Sleep Token for the first time because of Spencer & I've now found you for the first time because I follow Sleep Token. It's cool hearing you break down Vessel's vocals, ty.
Please don't name-drop them like that, they've asked their fans not to.
Everything about this song and the band themselves is amazing.
It starts out with hitting you in the face as hard as possible then slowly starts to caress you in forgiveness before doing it again. Such an amazing song!
Oh man if you love his vocal range you will love their song range. They make the music they like and the genres they work in are so varied. You've got so many songs to discover from them.
I like your analysis of his voice, I didn't catch the swapping between head voice until you pointed it out. Also. This is one of the most screamy of their songs, his clean singing voice is absolutely incredible and he brings it every time. When he screams it's more like a flex, I CAN, I don't HAVE to.
Soooo cool that Spencer made the connection between you and this band, they really have something special, I first heard their music last month and I'm completely addicted to their music ever since, and yes, you'd really like The Summoning too.
I was hoping so much for you checking out Sleep Token. Thank you Chris! :D
Yes! It feels like a combination of Maynard's voice, Deftones melody and Slipknot's lyricism.
Definitely. When my son showed them to me a couple years ago, I immediately said this is like an evolution of Def Tones in a very, very good way. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.
Saw them opening for Architects in January. Have been listening to them a lot ever since. You'll be pleased to discover that they have songs that show him off a lot more ^^
Really appreciate your breakdown. Love this group. The Summoning is a great display of his talents
I’m literally sitting here, jaw dropped, face cracked, & in chills right now listening to The Summoning. Wtfffff man 🤯🤤👏🏽
Isn’t it out of this world!!!
This guys are truly something unique.
Loved the analysis and reaction dude. You have a new subscriber.
Love from Argentina.
Periphery and Sleep Token are both in my daily music intake, and have been for a number of years. Enjoyed your content! \m/
I've listened to Sleep Token, as well as Vessel's previous work, and I gotta say I would not have ever thought that Vessel back then before ST would be able to do the vocals he does now. Such an evolution of his talent and ability!
Love learning from you my dude! Your content is top tier!
Thanks for introducing me to Sleep Token! Would love to see more fro them... And some more Mike Patton would be nice. (certain parts of this reminded me of him!)
I'm not even halfway through and instant sub. Holy shit your analysis is really fun to watch!
freakin enjoyed this so much. alpha tier and super unique. Can’t stop listening to this!
I'm a big Tool, APC, all around Maynard fan and have been scouring the internet looking for someone who also weirdly gets a Maynard vibe from Sleep Token. 😂 It's not even just vocal ability, I feel like there are a ton of reasons actually, even though they are very different sounding. Anyway, thank you, I feel better now. Lol
Spencer should be a regular on this channel lol
More coming from him :) in just a couple weeks!
Bro you so on point I agree 100%
i might have missed it but i think i really miss a high "false cord" scream tutorial, just like the one you did today. we have a lot of high fry tutorials but fewer high "false cord" tutorials, and they sound really different! i'd love to see one from you!
I have been waiting for this for a very long time. 🙏
They're amazing, Vore's already one of my fav songs of theirs
Whew what a huge voice to analyze. Vessel has so many techniques he can use you could probably make several videos on just his vibrato alone lol
to me this song is such a nice blend of ST but with that extra dreaminess of Deftones mixed in and the Ambience from Hypno5e in my opinion, by far my favorite of their recent singles
If you want to listen to vessels range, I recommend Jaws, Alkaline, The Summoning, The Offering, and Blood Sport ( from the room below ) you really can hear his vocals as it's a piano version of it
As a first time visit to your channel and your first experience I wish you had chosen another song from sleep token but I’m glad you got to hear them
IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME
Thank you Spencer, I've been waiting ages for this
I found these guys sometime last year, right around when Will Ramos covered Hypnosis. That album went on repeat for a while, and with their new releases, had to go back and listen to Sundowning. These guys don't miss. The most obvious influences for me, are the shades of black metal, but also the very prevalent Deftones-y quality to their sound.
YESSSSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Wow that's amazing! You have my attention! I'm a musician been in a few Sacramento bands as guitar and back up vocals but I quit smoking 2 years ago and my range is crazy now I just need to learn to navigate it. Im going to write a song for my brother Rich Piana. I'm going to check out your lessons. Awesome 👍
Wonderful. A really good song to listen to of sleep tokens as a voice coach is bloodsport from the room below.
I think it would be worth having a look into the summoning with it being their most popular song currently. But Hypnosis, Aqua Regia and Mine would be 100% up there to have a look at - Hypnosis and Mine are off of their second full length and both have two very different sounds but showcase vessels voice sooo well. Aqua Regia and The Summoning are off of the newer upcoming release but are fantastic in their own ways. This was such a great video to watch! thankyou for getting around to them :D
God this has to be one of my favourite songs ever because of the voice alone, such an absolute masterpiece
Would love to see your take on his Bloodsport(from the room below) just him and a piano!
Love that Spencer is a ST fan 🖤
Hi, just revisiting the video where I discovered Sleep Token. Cheers Chris
Thank you for showing this in particular its my favorite sleep token song right now before it was the love you want
Hey Chris! I’d love you to go over Sleep Token’s “Blood Sport From The Room Below”. The emotion in that song is something I wanna try to include in my own singing.
Absolutely wonderful to see analysis videos on Sleep Token. I will say though, despite how rich and successful the new singles they’ve released are, they do not convey the solemn energies presented in their previous albums the same. With the new releases having much more intense expression, I’d say looking back on their other works would be just as much of a treat.
It’s funny we did a reaction to this as well but I never heard the “Maynard”sound until you mentioned it
Maynard has the best voice in rock in my opinion
I absolutely LOVE that Maynard was mentioned here.
please do an analysis/lesson on The Summoning by Sleep Token too, his singing is just from another world
Coming out Friday
@@chrisliepe 😍🤩🙏🏻
Vessel is goated, his voice is very divisive some people absolutely hate it. Reminds me of another legend Charlie Simpson. Surprised you didn’t catch the Deftones influences
And they all have Deftones influences
Fightstar is such an underrated band
@@r63031008 most underrated band ever, vexes too
You NEED to listen to all their stuff ! Chokehold is amazing.
I love a singer who can sing you to sleep but also scare the crap out of you. It's why I like Vessel so much, along with Corey Taylor from Slipknot.
Listen to 'Take aim' to get his full high register. His range is out of this world.
I FREAKING HOPE SPENCER COVERS ONE OF THEIR SONGS DAMMIT
Awesome to hear that Spencer Sotelo likes Sleep Token!
Just listening to you talking baout the shift in vocal center of vessels screams, makes me very interested in how you feel about Kim Dracula's 70 thorns
Gotta do Bloodsport -from the room below. You get the full breadth of Vessels vocals in a amazingly gut wrenching and beautiful piano performance.
Never heard this band and it was awesome
Awesome!!!!! Amazing vocals and uniqueness.
Very cool analysis. I thought you were spot on with the MJK reference.
If you really want to analyse Vessel's voice I'd recommend checking out Blood Sport. It's literally just piano and his raw vocals, and he uses a pretty good range of vocals within the song so a perfect song to use for something like this!
I recently found Lorna Shore. Dude has some crazy vocal chords
Fantastic! Huge sleep token fan!
You have to listen more of their songs please
Check out The offering and Hypnosis great vid Chris 👍
Please check out their song Calcutta. Absolutely beautiful vocals and mostly very front of mix.
Maynard is a great comparison. Also his screams resemble Chester if you have to compare. That singing while screaming.
I'm pretty sure it's the guitar guy doing the screams. When he does the screams for "the summoning" live he sounds exactly like this. When Vessel has done screams live its a much lower tone, plus the accent isn't as audible.
When he does higher screams like on Gods it also sounds completely different from this is far as the voicing and tone goes. I'm willing to bet, that if they play this live we'll be seeing the guitar player doing those screams.
Amazing reaction sir. Vessel is a vocal unicorn. Plz check out more of sleep Token's music. Bloodsport, from the room below. Alkaline, Granite, Aqua Regia, The Summoning and The love you want. Worship. 💙
listen to the love you want by them its phenomenal
Great as always!
Can I suggest a singer you probably don't know?
Please, watch the video of CAMILO SESTO singing GETSEMANI the year 1977. He was the first Spanish singer who used heavy metal technique.
Everyone is reacting to this in RUclips. It's really awesome.
Regards.
3:38 haha that 'dont come for me internet" face
Goddamn what a first impression lmao
Like your reviews chris. 5:02
Next song you check out by them has GOT to be *Blood Sport (From the Room Below)*, any other suggestion is just plain wrong.
This one is just the singer Vessel singing and playing the piano and it's super emotional, you can hear every inflection in his voice super clearly plus it's a hauntingly beautiful track.
7:18 sounds almost exactly like Einar Solberg of Leprous (who you should check out if you haven’t yet).
You definitely need to give the plot in you a listen. Landon Tewers is an amazing vocalist definitely different from the rest.
If you haven’t yet, look into Courtney LePlante from Spiritbox. She’s incredible
this guy are amazing you should check The Summoning
Vore is funny enough probably the worst song for a vocal analysis. Most of their songs the vocals stand out far more in the mix. Check out Jaws.
Yes. MORE. M O R E.
That chorus has a really familiar Breaking Benjamin vibe going on. Stylistically mostly. But that's what I'm hearing.
check out atlantic from sleep token
First time hearing about Sleep Token - They really remind me of Demon Hunter.
kinda reminds me of Darroh Sudderth's (Fair to Midland's singer) vocals in this one...huh.
Dude has hints of Ben Burnley in his voice.
You need to check out The Summoning. Gets funky
Hey Chris i was wondering, my voice kinda feels weird since a couple of days ! I don’t feel anyway pain but when i try to belt my voice cannot have any clean tone through it, only distorsion comes out ? It never happened before ?
The muffled part is intentional. The song is literally about being swallowed alive by the gods 😅
hey chris! do you know any good books that explains vocal anatomy?
it sounds like the breaking benjamin guy
You should do the rest of their catalog far more interesting with vocal style and originality a sides Vore I love all their songs they are all different but the same if you know you know
Do a video on Gaz King please
#WORSHIP
i hope you did one for "The Summoning". Even more textures there!
