Apocalypse in our garden | We suffered heavy losses (Life on a small farm in Europe)

  • When we saw our garden in bloom several weeks earlier than usual, we were excited but worried at the same time. We knew frosty nights could come and destroy everything. We were really hoping they wouldn't, but they did. Sadly, the damage is visible on most fruit trees and shrubs. Not everything was destroyed though, and thanks to the warm weather, we already have first fruit to taste.

    Sad to hear of the the frost affecting your garden as well as the rest of Central Europe. We had over 90 inches (228 cm) of rain between October and May - Grateful for the water filling our reservoirs following the drought years, but with rain came excessive wind, toppling redwood and fir trees onto power lines and homes. We were without electricity for 5 days in February. Thankfully we have a generator as well as a whole house battery backup system, but no internet, phone or cell service for 5 days. Be grateful for each other and the limited production from your farm this year. Next year has to be better!

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  2 месяца назад

      Wow, we would get such amount of rain maybe in 4 years. Yearly average here is around 500 mm (50 cm or 20 inches). It's never the best when it's too much of something. Doesn't sound like fun at all being without electricity for so long, but luckily you were prepared. It looks like we should still have some harvest because we have so many various trees and shrubs, so it should be ok in the end. We'll see how the year goes on 🙂

    Hi Tommy & Peter.. greetings from Miami. Sorry to hear about your late frost experience. We are having the opposite weather extreme here. We are seeing daily high temps of +35 C which are temperatures we would normally not see until late July and August. I am so sorry for your losses! i really understand you are worried and sad! Here spring was late this year. It was cold and rainy - in fact we have the impression that it has been raining more or less since last July! The lower part of our garden has been almost inaccessible until a few weeks ago. Since the beginning of May, the weather has been amazingly warm and sunny (usually it can be cold here even in the middle of May). Unfortunately it is also quite windy, so everything is getting too dry already. - Despite your losses, it was a very beautiful video (and instructive too!) - and as always very poetic!

    Hi T&P, Very disappointing to hear about all that destruction from frost. It must be quite overwhelming and the cause of despondency. Hopefully though, some fruit will still appear. Fingers crossed.
    Sorry I’ve not been around much lately. Life here in Ireland has become quite hectic of late and I’ve found I’ve virtually no free time. But such is life.
    Peter: in the word compost, the second syllable is pronounced to rhyme with lost not post. But that said, I am always in awe of your command of English. It’s excellent. 😀
    BTW, you both looked so relaxed and handsome doing your garden work in open shirts and shorts. 😉

  • @RealConstructor

    Fruit trees can be protected against frost by spraying them with water all night. The water sticks on the flowers and early fruits and turns into ice, protecting it from frost damage. It sounds strange, but it works. During the day the ice melts and you start spraying again at sunset.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  2 месяца назад

    Oh no! Guys, I know this must be so disappointing for you!!! But, yes, you certainly did sense it was going to happen. I hope it doesn't impact fruiting on the commercial scale too much as that will have real impacts on access to fresh food etc. Not good. There has been some concern of it happening here in Australia too, I mean beyond the limits of what might be considered normal, but I don't think it has really happened yet. Like you, we live in the city and it is very interesting to notice the seasonal timing difference between city and our farm which is just 1.5 hours away. As you say, nature is incredible and has the capacity to recover. And your stunning bulb flowers will thrive in the frosty conditions and, actually, be all the better for it. We planted our spring bulbs this weekend, always a joy. Keep well.

    I googled this: Stinging nettle is high in amino acids, protein, flavonoids, and bone-building minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Yes, people eat them. You can prepare nettles similar to spinach. When you cook them, they don't sting anymore. But the taste is not the best. It's better to make tea out of nettles and drink it, that is quite common here 😊

      Yes, that is true 😀🫤 But oh well, nothing we can do about it. Hopefully we'll still have something 😊

    Unfortunately, the fearsome "black swan" arrived and did its thing.
    I understand your sadness guys. But nature has its own rules and sometimes they don't coincide with our plans
    Here in Argentina too, autumn ocurred with temperatures of 1° C and affected many crops. And not to mention the floods in the south of Brazil that affected more than 1 million people and countless animals. Shocking events are happening all over tbe planet.
    Well sweeties, to focus on what was saved and look forward. There is no other option.
    But, you are alive, you are ok, right? Kisses and hugs.

      It's sad, but oh well, that's nature 😕 Natural disasters are often quite shocking...
      Yes, we need to stay optimistic about the fruits that survived. Thank you, Liliana 😉😊

    So sorry for your frost damage That sucks, What is that small bush in your video after the dark pink helleborus, It has white flowers on it that are very unusual looking, I never seen those kind of flowers before, I know what stinging nettle is, I touched it by mistake once and my hand was stinging for about 20 hours, LOL Take Care.

      The small bush with the white flowers was 'Exochorda racemosa' - the pearlbush 😉
      Yes, it can sting for quite some time after touching the nettle 😁

    Supposedly you can cook nettles and eat them somehow. I’ll skip it.

      Yes, we tried once. It was not good but not totally terrible either. You can cook with it like you would with spinach. But spinach is better 😀 Or you can make tea, it's good for detoxing the body. Just put a few leaves in the mug, pour hot water over it and let it steep for 15-20 minutes 😊

    I have not been able to view your videos since before Christmas. I thought you had stopped taping. Any how I just downloaded them all. Don't understand how you tube can discriminate so badly.

      We are already used to the fact that RUclips isn't very keen on showing our videos to people. Oh well. Glad you discovered us again, Glen 😊
