for those who never realized, at 5:55 Neil omits the 8th hi-hat note in the song (so you’ll hear 7 hi-hats with a pause on the 8th). this is extremely hard to pick up for unattuned ears and this guy nailed it. every cover I've seen on RUclips has totally overlooked this detail. cheers for nailing the fine details bro!
I learned to play LaVilla without a double bass. Just a simple five piece set, and three fairly crappy cymbals, BUT developing a keen sense of timing to compensate for other shortcomings, I learned strange and new time signatures (5/4, 7/4, 9/8, 11/8) thanks to Rush. I could play 5:55 perfectly because it was a part I could learn without needing anything more than I had. Good catch!
I think Neil secretly watches your vids and appreciates your passion, your constant striving for perfection and obvious talent as a musician. Like Neil Peart, you always want to make it just that little bit better. You’re always an inspiration Sterling. Thanks.
I agree with you, the Energy that was Neil is aware.. I think it's funny that people think once a personality (Ego) has disconnected form the body that that energy is now "done". Not...true at all.
This is the best drum cover for this song that I have seen thus far. The word I would use to describe it is "Flawless". Every single nuance was captured. Keep up the excellent drumming.
Thank you so much! My eyes are wet with tears because we’ll never again see Neil’s level of ingenuity. You’re awesome for letting us live it for a second from the captain’s chair!
We all know the thumbs down are from those who are so jealous they can't come close to playing this. This is easily one of the best drum covers of any Rush song.
He was a true composer. Something that many aren't or not to that depth. Most throw something together, but Neil really seemed to put all his passion into actually composing and putting all the right pieces together in the right places. Building a complex structure that sounds incredible and all flows so well, and connects perfectly.
Genius perfectionist, every single hit is ABSOLUTELY the same like on the record. Listen to la villa maybe a thousend times, seeing this, I like it even more.
After the thousands of times I have ATTEMPTED this song I’ve never such on point, precise, and beautiful playing for any rush song ever! Great playing keep it up. Those 11 dislikes are from try hard guitar players who are jealous.
An outstanding tribute to the great Neal Peart. Thank you and well done Sir. Edit: After seeing dozens, maybe hundreds of tributes playing this song, I’ve decided that this tribute is the best. Your skill and proficiency is not lacking in the least. No soft spots or gloss overs here, only skill and great timing.
Starting at around 3:17 and ending around 3:30, your knowledge and use of the hi hat’s opening and closing quickly is nothing short of a masterful touch, Sterling. Many covers miss this. You are following in the professor’s footsteps to a “T.” And I must mention your ghost notes..perfectly executed. Neil is smiling down on you! I’m a huge fan of yours and enjoy and appreciate your hard work. Thank you for what you do.
They are from the country boys who only like 4/4 time and wants to know that the phrases, verses, bridges, and Choruses are in the same recognizable place so that someone who has never herd the song before can pick up on it
Holy shit. I've watched an awful lot of people try to cover Neil on RUclips. Some are fantastic, some are ok and some really suck ass. This, however, is nothing less than incredible. A perfect carbon copy. The details, the nuances, the sound....wow. Phenomenal work, sir!
Hello Sterling! Greetings from Brazil! I've watched all of your videos and i've need to congratulate you for the amazing performance. The way you care about the smallest details, is unique and beautiful! Thanks for that! Hugs!
Absolutely the best drum cover of this song I've ever seen. 🔊🔉🔈 I have heard this song hundreds of times and I've never realized some of the very basics until I saw your amazing cover video here. Like how the symbols are timed with the rhythm guitar in the bass The accents are similar and at the same time. And so many more! It makes me want to watch this over and over again and dissect the song because it's just so well done and beautiful. 💥
This should have a million views! Incredibly well done and the amount of meticulous practice it takes to learn the Professor's intricate nuances of alien chops is greatly appreciated. Neil is smiling.
That was absolutely amazing. I love watching someone put in such hard work to learn a great piece like this. I am so glad I stumbled onto this. Subscription added. Great work bud
5:14 is just built up so well! I think the drums help really well to build up to the reprise of “Monsters” with that AWESOME riff! Also 6:19 is a crazy fill and you pulled it off perfectly!
Jaw hanging open! Just incredible. I cannot get over how crazy hard the drumming to this song is. I literally get lost at several points just watching. Great job!
Neil you will be missed i loved all you skill behind a drum set you are the best at what you did and you where a very smart man i loved your playing since you started with rush i just wish i would have stayed playing as l ok ng as you did 45 years was alot my friend and may i say i will always remember that you where the best drummer ive seen and i always wished i could play like you ty so much neil peart for being who you where a great drummer of all time god bless you sir
Really enjoyed your cover. You did what most don’t, you had the ghost notes in there. Bravo! I just wish you had more than just the one overhead shot, but great job playing it perfectly to my ears.
What a great effort at covering one of the best instrumentals ever written, good on you, you are dedicated to the maximum. 🎼🎼🎼🥁🥁🥁🔊🔊🔊🎩🎩🎩 Hats off to you.
That was amazing! I knew the song was hard, but i didn't know exactly just how complex it was. That was a FANTASTIC performance. You're a very talented and skilled man.
Excellent. Neil Peart said in many interviews that his greatest wish was to inspire others . You would have made him very happy . So sad that he is gone 😥 . Keep making covers please. They honor him in the best way possible.
Your path will lead you to glory and blessings only. All of your cover videos are PERFECT!!!! Neil would be proud if he sees this... Thumbs up Bro!! U now got a brazilian fan hahahhaa
I agree, he doesn't play exactly like Neil Peart because he isn't. However, he does the best fill ins I have seen and that is awesome. Gotta give this dude mad points! Keep up the good work
So just last night I put on your playlist of you performing the signals album. I was literally thinking about what the day will be like when we lose one of the guys in Rush... Especially Neil. When the news came down today you were one of the first people I thought of and I've never met you.
I really believe probably only Sterling after hearing all the songs on his RUclips channel could possibly fill in or cover for Neil I mean Sterling just executes everything precisely his rhythm timing articulation everything right on the money the way their music is written and played there's really not much room for adlibing you'd be able to tell and it wouldn't sound right Sterling does a masterful job of playing Neil Peart music good job man you practice a lot .
I really think you nailed this. The sound of your drums are epic as well. It reminds me of the way Neil used to tunes them in the Exit Stage Left days. Bravo! I’m a new sub!
The whole time I'm watching it I'm thinking I can do that I can do that.... And then I wake up... When you were great at something, It looks natural. There's absolutely no question as to Sterling's perfection and maybe the most difficult song to play for any musician be a guitar bass keyboard or drums. But Neil's drumming in this song particularly He takes it to a different level and it is always been my favorite song and this guy makes it look easy.

@Shallex you dont need to play an instrument just pay attention ;D
I heard that also . This is the only cover I have seen the musicianship that it takes to really nail it .
S. E. Instruments are easier to listen for. I personally think producers have the best ear because they can hear extremely minuscule things
and again at 8:05
The transition from a chipper pop-esque tune at 3:15 to a sad mournful melodic sound is my favorite bit of the song.
I think Neil secretly watches your vids and appreciates your passion, your constant striving for perfection and obvious talent as a musician. Like Neil Peart, you always want to make it just that little bit better. You’re always an inspiration Sterling. Thanks.
Well he won't be watching them anymore

The way you drum is so beautiful, technique is out of this world. You’re just amazing to watch man
Agreed.
Yes
Sterling is A..M..A..Z..I..N..G..!!
Dude, now this is a full body workout of a song! Legendary song and legendary drum player!
Thank you so much! My eyes are wet with tears because we’ll never again see Neil’s level of ingenuity. You’re awesome for letting us live it for a second from the captain’s chair!
Sterling, WHEN Geddy and Alex ask you to do a tour with them, I'll be one of the first to buy a ticket. Thank you!
Incredible!! I've seen Rush probably 15 times (starting in 1982 on the Signals tour) and this drumming is right up there with the late great Peart's.
We all know the thumbs down are from those who are so jealous they can't come close to playing this. This is easily one of the best drum covers of any Rush song.
What I love about Neil the most is not his drumming ability but how he arranged the drums to fit into the song.
He was a true composer. Something that many aren't or not to that depth. Most throw something together, but Neil really seemed to put all his passion into actually composing and putting all the right pieces together in the right places. Building a complex structure that sounds incredible and all flows so well, and connects perfectly.
The person who gave this a thumbs down is either deaf or a disco fan.. GREAT COVER MAN!!
Right! I once accidentally hit thumbs down so maybe they were all accidents? Great drummer hands
Why not both?
Exactly. Deaf, disco or jealous. Awesome cover.
No doubt jealous

Anyone who dislikes this is not a RUSH fan. They need to go away! Awesome song and played very well by Adam!!!
Never knew there were so many ghost notes. Holy shit. Way to absolutely slay this masterpiece. Great job.

That's awesome!!I've been playing 24 years and still can't master La Villa Strangiato, that's amazing you nailed it 👍
This should have a million views! Incredibly well done and the amount of meticulous practice it takes to learn the Professor's intricate nuances of alien chops is greatly appreciated. Neil is smiling.
This is it, no intros, no effects, no adds..... just an excellent drum cover
This is purely fucking amazing. Never seen someone perform my favorite Rush song this accurately

Highest quality sir, absolute brilliance. Regards
That was hella sick. Thanks for posting. I will be watching you for sure
Absolutely spectacular Sterling!!!!!
Excellent drumming...with Pearts spirit!!
Stellar performance! Outstanding! Very impressive.
Simply blown away. Really well played. At 5:43 looks like an early version of Subdivisions ending. Just quicker?
nice observation....Neil does the ride/china alternating thing on several songs, you are correct.
Pretty much exactly the way Neil used to play this. 10 / 10 !!
I love Lerxst in Wonderland! I can listen to that breakdown over and over again....😎👍🏼✊🏼
Wow. As a huge rush fan I'm blown away dude. Amazing job.
Bravo. Please do more of Neil to help all of us through these dark days
Absolutely nailed it. Bravo 👏
Wow, that drum Se- I mean Castle, must be a HUGE blessing
Absolutely Awesome! You will be hard pressed to find a couple of mates to cover guitar, bass and vocals as well as you cover Neil's percussion.
