Ikr moments like that are part of what makes Elden Ring so fascinating to me. Exploration is very important to me in any game I play, so to be rewarded so many times for looking around was very satisfying. The lack of meaningful loot and worthwhile exploration is a big part of why I didn’t like ff 16.
When Marika banished death, she inadvertently perverted nature. Some creatures grow continually through out their life until their body can no longer support itself and dies. But without death they'd keep growing.
Just one clarification- the bloated ants are not queens, they're actually more like feeding reservoirs for the colony. Honeypot ants can actually do that in real life
May not be perfect, but FromSoft's enemy placement and art direction did a great job in making me 'nope' out of there when I initially encountered those giant ants. The cramped areas where you would see nests, around openings where you can see them gather to pounce you, and even some open fields where you have a combination of flying and regular ants guarding an item with corpses nearby made it look more intimidating than it really was. Easy to take down, though I was once stupid enough to try to fight two of the armored headed ones, uh, head on. The only thing missing are sniper rifles and shotguns.
In Liurnia of the Lakes, the presence of crayfish is due to the presence of the Moon Worship. As the Tarot Card "the moon" has a crayfish emerging from the water, it symbolizes the depths of the unknown(be it depths of water or the depths of darkness and space). As a Pagan, I just noticed this..the presence of the crayfish could be a symbol that no matter what, there's always a presence of the hidden and unknown
You didn't mention the giant land squirts, or giant crabs. I have this theory that in Elden Ring, as in other FromSoft games, there is some association between water and the divine. Many of the giant animals are sea creatures. The oracle envoys drop strip of white flesh when you kill them, making me think they're sea creatures of some kind. Their swaddled faces also remind me of Mother Kos in Bloodborne. And the biggest sea creature of all, the Elden Beast, who looks like some kind of space nudibranch, who you fight in a giant lake. "Giant sea creatures" seems to be a major recurring theme in the Lands Between.
A consistent theme in Dark souls was that eating humans would cause beings to "bloat" in size like; man eater mildred, the butchers, Smough and Aldrich. I wouldnt be surprised if it was the same case for Elden Ring to have creatures grow bigger when eating humans.
The fallen eternal city, which is probably part of lyndell according to tarnished archeologist, would have left ample numen/nox for the ants to feast on after its collapse
Of all the amazing ER lore hunters out there, your channel is the one that stood the test of time. Here we are more than a year and a half after release, and while most ER RUclipsrs stopped making content, you’re still exploring small aspects of fascinating lore. Thank you so much for your dedication! ❤
Loved every minute of this one, can't wait for the Rune Bear video... also, ere'body better be puttin' some respekt on their name. Rune Bears will wrek your day and your face!
One thing that I wanted to point out is that towards the end of the video, you describe the bloated ants to be queens. In real life, these "bloated" ants that look like this are used as living food storage for the other ants by holding liquified food in their secondary stomach. I'm not sure if its what you meant but I don't believe that these ants would be a descendant of the numen, but rather they probably just killed some (if thats possible) and stored their bodies for later consumption.
I'm still not sure where the giant rats fit into all this, but rats of all sizes can drop rune arcs, which makes very little sense to me. Even the 'small' rats drop them. Maybe everything got enormous from years of eating runes. Anyway, I still think the blood heretics would make a decent October video. Do you?
The Basilisks look so derpy and cute with their big eyes, but then you actually examine them and realize that those eyes are fake and their actual face and tiny real eyes are creepy as hell
I think a part of that comes from how the ants don't always act like you'd expect ants to do and instead come off as being more akin to wasps at some point. Ants are bad enough. But ants that take a page out of a wasps book? No, thanks!
I wish you could get a set of paired whips that were just two land octopus tentacles. Maybe with the ash having you take a bite out of one of them to heal yourself, low fp but at the cost of a short attack debuff.
I remember when i accidentally went to the ant colony, my only response was to get all of my fireball spells and whips, and my bow and crossbow . No way am I getting near those giant bastards without using any range weapons and spells
The odd impression I get about the land octopi is that they fled the ocean for some reason. I also find it odd there is that one beach in Southwest Limgrave where you have a lot, and I mean a lot of zombies wandering towards the ocean to stare at it. They will move towards it as one big group and just stand there looking out like they are waiting for something. The first time I ran into them, I half expected some sort of giant water creature to come out at night to be worshiped by them. Especially with how many shipwrecks can be seen in the distance. For the ants, I suspect they grew so large by feeding on the roots of the Lesser Erdtrees, or rather any sweet liquids potentially secreted by them. They could have also over the years snacked on humans, who got their nourishment from the Erdtree transferring some of that to them via digestion. Though, this is just my head canon and not really anything concrete to go on.
9:02 I feel that the low resistance is suggesting the ants themselves would serve as a good vessel for the rot, which could be an explanation for the Blade. If you worshiped the rot, why not chose to make a weapon of something that could..."host" it, if you will, and thus allow you to weaponize it so on so forth.
Elden Ring giant Steel balls that follow you around like you owe them money was the most unnerving thing to me. Really hated seeing them, I think its just the simplicity of it is why I thought it was cool and unnerving.
There is monster like the Kraken? (From folklore and cryptids lore, not modern media) hes related to the nordic-icelandic draugr through the name Drauen* (draugen "sea spirit") who can pretend to be an see-weed covered rocks, similiar to another related mythical being - the hafgufa, whale like created who is so big, that a humb of hs body will look like an island. This is also related to the world serpent/wyrm, the Lagarfljót Worm and even remind the mollusk/caterpillar like traits of the horned serpents in canada.
What if there were different versions of the ants before the tarnished were in the lands between? That’s why the antspur rapier exists? Edit: I’m pretty sure if you use a bewitching branch on the ants being ridden, they will do an instant-kill stab attack on their rider!
Those ants the reason I despise the underground areas of the game. I just hate bugs in general, and that sound they make when they fly or walk towards you... yikes! FLAMETHROWER NOW!!!!!!!
I literally hate this game it’s so convoluted google “why are there octopus creatures in elden ring and it goes” the octopus creatures are large and found in elden ring they are quite unpredictable: WHY IS IT THERE. YOU JUST PLOPPED THEM IN WHYYY. No rational. No explanation. Just giant ball of octopus and refuses to elaborate. Absolutely fucking ludicrous
I'm seeing that FromSoftware is drawing a parallel here. There are many, many references to earlier periods of time regarding our planet. Main source here being the name Ordovis and Siluria which is a direct reference. And fun fact: the planet had at some point giant insects. Arthropods that ranged from one foot to eight foot. This, was because their larvae benefited from a large surplus of oxygen during the Carboniferous period, which caused them to grew to such sizes. Could it be that the giant ants, the giant crayfish and the rest of other creatures are just really old?
I never forget how horrified I was when I encountered the first singing human bat. just sneaking around it and listening to its song. just great
Ikr? I knew it was something that could happen, but stumbling on it in-game was wholly different
It’s also strong af for no reason, why does it have same hp as knight

When I heard that I thought it was some NPC singing

Just like Godwyn…?
but WHY IS IT ON LAND

It says a lot when I'd rather fight 90% of the bosses in Elden Ring, than square off against a giant crayfish...

A land octopus has a grab attack. If you die to it, they'll eat you.

Isn't Smough like super jacked though and its just his armour that makes him look fat?
@@jarroddt so were the butchers in the Depths, maybe a consistent workout?
either way I do like the connection you've made. I guess in theory eating humans in FS games is just the peak way to bulk@@whatsnewbois9814

That is actually what I was implying. Not to say that they are Numen, just that they likely existed alongside of or consumed them
I love chopping the tentacles off the land octopus things

The rats eat humans, just as they did in Dark Souls where they drop Humanity (the rune arc equivalent, though it functions a bit differently)
Awesome video!I am super happy you guys listened to my ideea :) I remember requesting it at some point
It’s something about the giant ants that makes them really unnerving the only thing more creepier to me are the basilisk with there weird buggy eyes
The Basilisks look so derpy and cute with their big eyes, but then you actually examine them and realize that those eyes are fake and their actual face and tiny real eyes are creepy as hell

The giant giants and their giant ants
It's kinda weird how the bats in the mountains have yellow patterns on their wings and are fighting the demi humans

What was the cause of your first one? Gravity?

Ah yes spooky Elden Lore the videos I watched LAST YEAR that got me into the channel, wow 😭😭
Sometimes I wonder how it would look like when you made videos for the other souls games. But we already have so many of them
That's exactly why I haven't tried to dig into them, there's already so much content I don't think I'd be able to add anything new to the discourse.

It's a classic cosmic horror trope. Want to convey horrible monsters beyond our imagination? Look underwater

It's possible they could be, but there don't seem to be any male giant octopuses, so it's reasonable to assume the males don't grow beyond that size.
