The true of the game now is that are a couple of civs broken, like Otomans, Jean Darc, Sushi Legacy. They can win pretty much every game if you are playing agaist normal players, I am platinum and everbody just pick those civs. So if your level of play are not above of your tier elo, you gonna lose for thoses civs if you use the other civs

Having started playing AOE4 after the expansion, I originally learned English because there were a lot of guides like Beasty's and others for it and they called it a beginner nation. I learned as much about it as I could and played my first 10 matches as English. As I learned more, and fought lots of other civs, I started think English was really weak. I kept losing my army when I had about equal numbers to the enemy army, and so on. I would get pushed and crushed, or I would push and deal some villager damage but not actually win (I did win some games in casual 1v1 though).
When I finally tried other civs I started to see how differently they can be played, but more importantly the versatility other civs have over English. Definitely the civ has merits but I find its one of my least favorite civs to play now that I've learned how to play about 10 civs. Let me say as a new player, I would say English is not the best starter nation. You need the knowledge of how army trades can work, and the understanding of the difference between regular archers and Longbows, and regular MAA and English MAA to fully utilize Eng troops. English transition to farms is super easy and convenient and I find going out on the map for food is super scary for new players, but that is all the civ has going for it as far as being beginner friendly goes.

Hi beasty, thanks for sharing. I have just started playing online and was able to finally beat the computer on ridiculous using what ive learned from watching your videos.
In regards to the English are they viable in FFA? It seems like their biggest strength is to rush early and gain the advantage over the opponent, however it seems very challenging to do that in FFA.
If you were to play English in FFA is it still better to go two TC and focus on macro or should you still try and rush and gain the advantage by taking someone out early?
Thanks again for the great content!

Well, I really love English and I have some my own wild playstyle as it. Through king, mass MAA and crossbows in castle, and possibly spears if playing against early knights civ (MAA+spears is good composition against everything, or if enemy has no cavalry, mass MAA only), such playstyle is sick as for me because I do not need so much of wood really, I can focus only on two resources (food/gold), also I do not need range attack military upgrades (until late game) so I can waste less resources on military upgrades as I have only melee damage units.
So commonly, I play passively-aggresive with this strat, I create pressure but plays more defensively, just scare my enemy with my army so he needs to produce units or go some feudal aggression itself (if he builds zero units, king+maa can just dive as they have significant arrows defense + AoE healing). That's not all, I'm kinda lazy to write all in details but generally it is. And it works in matchups are I tried playing more standard longbows+spears and got destroyed, all next games against the same matchups doing this strategy always give much better results then going longbows/spears, one of the reasons is because longbows/spears die too easy, while MAA plus with King/Abbey healing with appropriate micro are very survivable and counters almost everything in feudal, and it is easier to keep economic tuned for strong production because no wood needed for units and I can focus on gold/food only (also insane amount of food from farms, so MAA cost only 20 gold because there is almost always enough of food).

I think English ☕ are probably a lot better than their ladder performance because people keep on getting baited 🎣 by their farm bonuses.
Their farms 🧑‍🌾🥔🫛 next to the mill are only 4.6% faster than hunting deer 🦌 by official gather rates (not including walk time) in the Dark Age without technologies. They are 30.8% faster than berries 🍒, but berries have virtually no walk distance, so the real difference is a lot lower.
And their farms are still very expensive. 10 English farms cost 375 wood 🪵. And you basically never have enough wood as you need so much for technologies, buildings, and units. Especially siege.
I really think the English should only build farms 🧑‍🌾🥔🫛 in the vast majority of maps after they get Wheelbarrow, Horticulture, your first Archery 🏹 Range (if you did not age up with Council Hall), and your first Barracks.
All of those things seem much better in the long term and for tempo than English farms, with their slightly higher or approximately equal gather rate.
I don't think a lot of players did the maths or a cost benefit analysis so just assumed that since the English farms are a lot better than standard farms it would make them better than other food sources. Though that is not true.
Also, one of the best bonuses the English have is not even listed as on the civilisation bonuses. They effectively get Hardened Spearman for free by not getting spearmen in the Dark Age. Which makes an already great unit even better.
This makes an already counterintuitive civ even more counterintuitive.
Personally, I would think a nice moderate buff would be to change the Hardened Spearman hidden bonus to a normal bonus that they get the Hardened Spearman upgrade for free in Dark Age. Maybe with -50 wood to balance their Dark Age rush protentional, but Hardened Spearmen are not that much better when not fighting melee cavalry.
That makes them able to get a lot more time for spearmen production. And it removes the unnecessary confusion created by a hidden bonus existing for a civ, especially one that affects a unit completely unmentioned in the displayed bonuses.
