I remember I used to read about this on the Lost Media wiki all the time as a Fat Albert fan,
Imagine my surprise when it casually appeared in my recommended page

The character of Fat Albert first appeared in Bill Cosby's stand-up comedy routine "Buck Buck," as recorded on his 1967 album, Revenge. The stories were based upon Cosby's tales about growing up in inner-city North Philadelphia. In 1969, Cosby and veteran animator Ken Mundle and brought Fat Albert to animation in a prime-time special, "Hey, Hey, Hey, It's Fat Albert."
The special, which aired on NBC, it was a hybrid of both live-action and animation. The music for the special was written and performed by jazz pianist/keyboardist Herbie Hancock in 1969, and was released on the Fat Albert Rotunda.
I remember this on prime time. But I was so small! I had to watch this to recall it! 😃

The original Fat Albert pilot was so much cooler than the Saturday morning show. It was actually quite artistic.

I'm kind of blown away by this - this is very artistic! These people put in high effort!
Even still, the cartoon I grew up with was great in its own right and just right for children too.
Nothing could prepare me for that great, avant-garde animation. Imagine if the whole series looked like that instead of the more polished, TV cartoon look (with all due respect to Filmation). And they beat the original Muppet Babies to the animation over footage of live action party by almost 20 years. Just everything about this is amazing. I did love the series proper back in the day and it had a lot of groundbreaking moments, but this is what I wish I could have seen years ago. Also, sometimes Fat Albert's face looks like Dayon from Osomatsu-san/kun and that made me smile.
If this version had been picked up I could imagine people watching this on drugs
Alot of that animation is more fluid than what we would normally get from Filmation.
@@Launchpad05 I just don't see this kind of animation going to series, myself. It has a rather wax pencil/markers directly on celluloid look to it, as well as going off model stylistically that I can't see being something a TV show of that vintage could afford to do on an episode to episode basis. Not even a 13 episode weekly format. And, of course, Filmation was a strict reusing animation studio. There are a few loops and reused bits here and there with this special, but no where near the library of stock movements, closeups with head turns, or reused walk cycles. Plus, while there is sort of a moral in this special (don't make fun of the fat guy, you never know when you might need him), it doesn't get as pronounced. The writing itself is more focused on the kids having fun, with a much looser style. That's what I wish we got with the series, after seeing the special.
Totally agree this pilot episode is giving me some intense Ralph Bakshi vibes.

Not gonna lie, but I didn't know that there was a version of Fat Albert like this one before, but since Fat Albert is one of my all time favorite TV shows, I think that this was definitely amazing! 🤩😉👍

@@Themaddprof I wouldn’t say it’s the “London after midnight” of cartoons lol there’s certainly better fitting lost media pieces for that title, the big difference is that the fat Albert pilot was archived in a museum, and London after midnight is probably FULLY gone. There was always a chance of rescuing this special from it’s grave, with LAM there may be no chance

@@michaelbullen3104 I did not mean that in the strict literal sense that it was lost forever, as I was aware that the first Fat Albert cartoon still existed in an archive. I meant metaphorically in that it was highly sought after in many wish lists to see.

Also, gotta love that he could've avoided destroying the entire wall the front door was on by shrinking first. Little details like that in things are fun.
His orange pumpkin like sweater literally turned into a suit after stepping out and breaking the entrance of the door. 😂

the lost ending of the 1974 movie phase iv came out just like this and not much later it was re-released in the movie in its studio version, so keep hope alive for the clean version to get a release. in ither words this ‘leak’ is an advance of that likely. hopefully. 🎉

I watched with my Dad when it first came to TV. I was too young then to appreciate the innovative animation! Thanks for posting this.
Same here, my dad adopted me in 69 and i remember watching this with him in 70 as a 5 yr old. This was very nostalgic to see and the animation was great for it's time. I MISS MY DAD !! Very best wishes to you and yours.
Even though this was filmed with a potato, all I can say is that this interesting piece of lost media has been found.
This is the holy grail of cartoon animation, thank you sir for going out of your way to post this great find.
I mean not really there’s definitely other holy grails higher than this one but it’s a very big find for sure and a conclusion to a decades long search

@@tonyasmith158 check the lost media wiki. the amount of pieces of lost animation that are still lost that are MORE sought after than this one is staggering. Too many to even list but it’s not hard to find them. This is a big find sure but there’s bigger finds yet to find and there’s so so many to list that telling you to just go to the lost media wiki is the easiest thing to do

As a fan of the Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids cartoon, and having seen glimpses of this piece of lost media, it’s refreshing to see the film in its entirety.
Damn, late 60s had such incredible parience to animate, squash and stretch many frames into these characters. Its a shame you don't see this much frames in the 2020s cartoons on rare occasions. Deadlines are must suck for animators.
I’ve been greatly anticipating the day this piece of Fat Albert history was found and uploaded online. The original animated Fat Albert. The animation, featuring a nice mid century aesthetic design which reminds me of early animated Sesame Streets segments and Depate Frieling shorts from the 70’s obviously a great departure from what would be later used for the famous Filmation animated series we all know and love, I simply say thank you for uploading this.
Wow I am actually stunned the animation and vibe is some how better then I ever could of anticipated in my wait to watch this for years. I've been a fan of fat Albert since I was a kid so this is so cool. Like a minute in and the composition of the shot of the window getting hit by snow with the picture of the building is fantastic!

Agreed. Totally different show we watched in the 1970s.
I didn’t like some of the changes, including making them all walk in a stereotyped way, and talk strangely.
This version shows natural movements, changes to how they walk or run, more detailed facials and body language, and natural kids voices.
It is nice they made Fat Albert not intellectually inferior, like in this version, but then again, that is representation that was erased.
This happens a lot with cartoons where the pilot will have a ton of work put into it so networks will hopefully be impressed and air it.
An absolute landmark - Ken Mundie and crew were way ahead of the curve. Saw it as a kid and revisited in an archive (where copies are forbidden) about ten years ago. This deserves to be commercially available somewhere so people can see what the series could have looked like. This animation has the spontaneous feel of a sketchbook and it's fun to see the characters express themselves with their entire figures, instead of just standing static and flickering their eyes and mouths (as in the long running series).
Do you realize how time consuming and EXPENSIVE animation is to do like this ON A REGULAR BASIS? This could have NEVER been a regular, ongoing show.
Incredible that I can finally see this entire special after all these years in any capacity.
Pretty unique. If I can be honest. I find it funny that it's a special about Fat Albert...when he isn't even in most of the special.

Now that I've finally seen this, I actually appreciate the experimental nature of it. Even if it's the result of a tight deadline.
Like so many, I really wanted to see the whole episode again and despaired that I would ever get to. I recorded the soundtrack off my dad's television speaker onto a cassette tape back in '71, so I remember a lot of the music and dialogue. Of course, I lost the tape decades ago. WHAT A BLAST to see it FINALLY on RUclips! I almost fainted! Thank you, Unknown Tracks!!

Groovy Man, Like Far out Man. Thank You for taking me back to my youth days. Even before the Saturday Morning show that would air on CBS in the fall of 1972 and ran originally until 1985.

Shitloads of people being in their Bill Cosby vinyls, cassettes and CDs there because they want nothing to do with him anymore and I get that but those albums are nostalgic to me haha

It's been 55 years since I last saw this. I've been transported back in time and I'm now 12 again with tears in my eyes with nostalgic delight.
Three years later Filmation extracted the originality and essence from this avant garde one shot special on NBC for a popular series Saturday mornings on CBS.
What Filmation does best
Thank you for finding this. As a longtime fan of Fat Albert, I heard of this pilot, but never saw even a glimpse of it until now. Very rough sketching but nonetheless great to see this.

I haven't had a chance to watch this yet, but I wanted to thank you for making this available. I've seen a few comments from people complaining about the quality of the recording, so I just wanted to know that your efforts are appreciated by most of us.
I never even watched Fat Albert and am really only aware of the show through cultural osmosis, but I can still understand why people would want to see this. So, thanks again.

I thought this was going to be a pilot episode to the series. This is like an animated short film. I remember the teachers playing a tape of the show at school in the lunch room and being bored. This is far better than the TV show.
you got that right.. the cartoon tv show was horrible.. And it was CBS, a hard channel to watch because it was so grainy looking. that made it worse.
the audio was horrible. then Cosby came out with "little bill" which was just as bad. CARTOONS isnt his thing.

My memory of this show is that there was live action of kids in Philly playing street football as the introduction to the show. I wonder what became of that footage? I worked with Ken Mundie on a few occasions in the 80s, and did assistant animation for him drawing directly on cels. He was a great guy and a great animator.

@@shirleymaemattthews4862 Not exactly, Ken drew in many styles, like most of us in animation. He really loved drawing and animating on cels, gives a very different look compared to the usual cartoon shows. You can more of Ken's animation on RUclips, just search him on RUclips.
When Bill Cosby started having his legal issues, I'm surprised he didn't invoke Fat Albert: "Hey-hey-hey, innocent until proven guiltay." Of course he was found guiltay, so it's just as well he didn't.
Computer animation doesn't have this kind of style.
Unbelievably, he DID INDEED invoke Fat Albert during the trial 😩

They’re hoarding history from the pubic that doesn’t need to be hoarded. Fuck it, it’s more important to have it archived so they don’t fuck up and lose it themselves because the place is run by o l d s ok, also we deserve to see it it’s not right for them to archive things the way they do, gatekeeping it behind some wall.
I remember watching this special back then! It was a few years before the Saturday morning T.V. show! My parents had a BILL COSBY record album with the story of the football game with Fat Albert saving the day. I was excited to see it realized in a cartoon.

Ever since I first learned about it, and watched the small little clip of it online. I remember talking about Fat Albert with a store clerk at the local supermarket, and the guy recalled this special but he didn't say anything more about it. For anyone curious on why the animation looks the way it does, the animators drew directly on cels with paint and grease pencils.
That and the crew had only SIX MONTHS to complete it to meet NBC's deadline.
Which explains why, in some areas, it looks REALLY rough and unfinished. This is still really cool to watch this show's early concept before it got redone as a TV show.
It's raw and far from polished, but you tell it was made with a lot of passion.

I honestly don’t really think they’re gonna give THAT much of a shit taking into consideration that this NEEDED to be preserved and I bet some of them knew it too. Archive it archive it archive it!!! The series is like low tier Hannah Barbara(Filmation). It’s held up by great writing.
This, while rough, is incredibly visually interesting, and way less choppy, with all these angles and differing expressions and facial features.

This also bears an interesting resemblance to the Clerow Wilson cartoons (about Flip Wilson's boyhood) that i fondly remember from DePatie-Freleng from 1972-74 in their avant garde style.

The very first 1969 plot? I never heard and knew about it before.

There’s three things I like about this special.
1. Instead of having backgrounds, they just use stock images and footage through the special.
2. The animation here is a lot more smooth and expressive than the actual Fat Albert TV series.
3. Fat Albert’s weight (and I guess, by extension, his face) is inconsistent. Sometimes he’s regular fat and other times he’s super fucking morbidly obese 😂

I loved Fat Albert!! I watched it in the 80's..Saturday morning cartoons..& I remember Picture Pages, I was a little older than. But, still 📺 My favorite character was the Brown Hornet 🐝
I remember watching this as a very young kid. I remember it looking weird and kinda grotesque but of course I love it now after seeing it with adult eyes. There’s an authenticity and gritty energy this has that the Filmation show never came close to (though that was by design, I’m sure).

Wow! I never knew this existed? I must admit I like the style of this! I love the background being separate but telling it's own story, very clever whoever put that together. I also must say this is phenomenal for 1969 - why does it seem like they put in much more work with cartoons like Tom and Jerry and Disney and the like than what they do now, even though we have far more advantages???
You can tell this was Bill's baby, this is all from his childhood, I must say I did not know it was this close to him. I just thought it was a fun cartoon growing up. And I didn't know that Bill in the cartoon was supposed to be him and Russell was his brother. I wonder why he gave the starring role to "fat Albert"? That showed humility.

Absolutely stunning that you were able to record and upload this whole special! While I enjoy the moral lessons in Filmation’s take on Fat Albert; art wise, I prefer the sketchy china marker animation of this special. Herbie Hancock’s funky musical score and the anti-fat shaming message definitely also helps improve this special. But the one thing I love the most will always be that psychedelic animation style accompanied by some 60’s R&B.
