      Hello!
I have a FM2n and collection of AIS lenses and I'm thinking to buy an serie X may be X T1 so my question is:
So, any time you change the lens you have to set on the camera the focal length using in that moment?
      Thank you .

Came across your video right in time. I was on the fence for months about moving from my Nikon dslrs to the Fuji x systems. But the ridiculous prices of the glass for Sony and Fuji mirrorless cameras is out of this world. Using my vintage lens brings things back into a more reasonable range. I'm cool with manual focus. Thank you!

Damian, this is what I'm most passionate about and you are only one of so few who shows what can be the most rewarding photography set-ups to use. Fuji X series bodies with vintage all manual glass is nostalgic near film experience with digital convenience, a perfect marriage in my books!

Great video, Thanks. I have a load of different vintage lenses. My favorites are Canon FD 135mm f2.5 and especially Nikon 85mm f1.4 which is super fantastic for portrait shots, but you have to be very carefull with focus because sharpnesss at 1.4 and at portrait distances is within 3-4 mm!

Yep, adapters are a great thing. Now I use two: one for my a-mount glass (shared between my Sony and Fuji), and one for the N-mount Soviet-made Helios-81H. I also use a Vega-11u: an enlarger lens that doesn't have a focusing mechanism and can only be used for macros.
Basically, I have found two limitations only. One is, since you are stuck with manual focusing, you can't take photos of any fast action. The other is absence of wide-angle lenses: no "vintage" wide-angle lens is wide enough when multiplied by the crop factor.

I had the same EF>FX adapter and it was so tight I feared for the lens mount. I sent it back, bought one with a kippon w/aperture (for an extra $30), fits much smoother.
Not sure how much Zeiss ff glass I want to use on Fuji. It’s all beastly glass-there’s a Rokkor 58 1.2 I love, but I don’t think as an 87 it will blow the 56 1.2 away.

Love it more now for getting an m mount adapter and a much better firmware update (the early upgrades were quite a task with the Fuji site, a reason I initially lost interest with the camera..) Nice - I'm havin' fun puttin' vintage lenses onto my Fuji X bodies as well - they work great as you said - focus peaking and long throw focus makes it easy! I have 3 Olympus OM lenses from my OM10 film camera, namely the 35mm F2.8, a 50mm f1.8 and a 135mm f3.5 which I use with the following adapters
    1 Fotasy OM-FX
    1 KandF concept OM-FX
and a Kipon OM-FX focal reducer.
    I also have a Helios -44Mwith a KandF M42-FX adapter.
My cameras are the X-A2 and the X-E2S.
I find using vintage lens to be more fun and makes me think about the photo I am trying to take.
My Fuji lenses are the XC 16-50mm, the XC 50-230mm and the XF 27mm pancake.
Yesterday I took photos of the moon with the X-A2, the 135mm lens with my old 2 times converter and a dummy adapter, I was quite pleased with the results.
I find focus peaking to be difficult and usually use zone focusing when doing street photography with the vintage lenses.

I found a used X-Pro1 in good condition which I purchased several months ago. My interest was always in using old adapted manual lenses on the camera. To anyone familiar with more modern cameras, such as the Fujifilm X-T2, the manual focusing cues on the X-Pro1 are a bit different and rather hard to use. Plan on always using the viewfinder and magnifying the view to see any of the focusing cues.
The manual lenses do work well. I've used several different length lenses from different manufacturers with vintages I've used reaching as far back as the late 1960s or early 1970s. To me it is surprising how well the lenses work, at least the prime lenses. I always had some brand loyalty from my film camera experience. Really, it does not seem there is a huge difference between the prime lenses of the major brands. As others have said, long throw focus really helps!

Question, is it best to set the focal length on the camera to match the lens focal lenghth or apply the 1.5 APSC factor to a 35mm lens. Example, my awesome fast Nikon 200mm zoom (35mm film) on my APSC sensor advantage improves that lens into a 300mm. So is it vest to enter the focal length with the 1.5 multiplyer applied or what what the lens specs say 200mm???

@@darkangel9685 It doesn't even matter, the only thing that setting the focal length in the menu does is add that info to the metadata in the image file. You could set it at 23 or 300 for the same lens and the resulting image file will look exactly the same.

Thank you for your videos. I just bought an X-T20 and would like to use some vintage lenses on it. I have a vivitar 135 mm and a 85-210 mm. It might be a stupid question, but can we also use variable zoom vintage lenses on a Fujifilm camera? I’ve seen almost all people using only a fixed zoom vintage lens. Is it because of the correction needed in the camera software, or it still works?

I'm pretty sure all the X system cameras have the Shoot Without lens setting, and Focal length selection in the menu. Both my X-Pro and my X-M1 have it as well as my sons X-A2.
The Focal length feature only puts the Focal Length of the lens you are using in the Exif data, for reference to the lens used because it's not getting the info automatically from a Fuji System lens. The camera body does not use the information in any other way during shooting.

Hey Damian, just came across your channel and this video as I think about buying an Xpro1 and use it with old glass. Still a bit torn between the xpro1 and the xt1 as the evf on the xpro isn‘t that good and for manual focuss you will need the evf. Also the ovf on the xpro1 paired with longer lenses (the adapter maiing it bigger) looses a lot of ‚view‘ as the lens takes up a lot of it. What is your experience, I would really appreciate your help. If the xpro had the evf of the xt I would have already bought it.
    Cheers from switzerland

Can I get the camera to give me a close up view for focussing? I wonder if the absence of any electronics stop this, or if I've missed something in the settings? It would obviously be a huge help if I could enable it.

You can set it to whatever you want, usually it let's the ibis work properly based on the focal length you set. That makes it less simple for zoom lenses, I try for something in the middle if I'm zooming in and out a lot and see how it works from there.

Zoom lenses are fine with the right adapter ye, as for the focal length it really is just for the exif details so put what helps you identify it. With the T1 that's all it really does. You can leave it untouched to be honest if you don't need to identify what lens you used later.

    • @paeng46
      @paeng46 4 года назад

      Damian Brown
I’ve tried doing the same. But I should like, if only the camera can, to focus through the optical view finder like the way you did with the SLR. Sadly, all mirrorless cameras (since they don’t have reflex mirror) can not.

    • @catherinegrimes2308
      @catherinegrimes2308 Год назад

Like Damian I use focus peaking, but I set the colour to red because I also use my X-E3 for astrophotography. The viewfinder is not optical, but I am sure that the focus peaking works with the viewfinder as well.
When doing astrophotography I sometimes use the remote control app on my tablet and unfortunately it doesn't show the same view that the LCD displays so focus peaking doesn't work. However, changing the speed and ISO is really easy.

I have three vintage K Mount lenses on my X-Pro1, 1> Ricoh Rikenon 28-100 F1:4 Macro Zoom , 2> Vivitar MC 24mm 1:1.8 Wide Angle prime, 3> Ricoh Rikenon, 50mm F 1:2 Prime. They work, like Wow! All gorgeous well looked after bought on e-Bay for about 130 Quid for the lot, The most expensive was the 100mm Zoom at 79 Euros from Germany. I love full manual focus. I find focus peeking much better than the highlight mode, though it is slower the results are really sharp. The Vivitar is a really sharp performer, I guess it's around 45mm focal length on APSC and gives whacky hexagonal Bokeh, in a vintage stylee! I bought a single Kiwi PK to FX mount adaptor, at around 40 quid, it's three times the price of the cheaper alternatives it's about ten times the quality and with the cheapness of the lenses it's well worth pushing the boat out just a bit. The most important part is they make you want to experiment and have fun with manual aperture, shutter and Focus, you concentrate on getting the shot you want more and end up with a far more rewarding experience in the bargain!
