I've got three beautiful vintage lenses I use with my XT2. Pentax 50mm f1.7, Minolta Rokkor 58mm F1.4, and the Konica Hexanon 40mm f1.8. I love them all, beautiful colours.

Vintage lenses can be addicting, and hunting them down is half the fun. I didn't have to look far for the Pentax 50mm/1.7 that sits on my X-E2 right now: I've had it since 1980 when it came on my ME Super. The Super, unfortunately, hasn't worked in 30 years. Maybe I'll get it fixed some day, but can't bring myself to get rid of it, as it was my first. In the meantime, that lens is back to work!

vintage lenses are so fun. and i m not even just talking about the ''known'' good ones. that go for quite high prices. but really just random lenses you have never heard about. sometimes you can pick up lenses for pretty much free and you never know what you will get before you review the photos. sometimes you find real gems in there. like today i was picking up a broken old used analog camera for 5 bucks but it had a 55m 1.8 on it i never even heard about at all. but its m42 mount and easy to adapt, lets try and do some gambling. worst case scenario: i payed 5 buckes for a decorative camera to put on a shelf.

I haven't tried that one yet, but I highly recommend the Pentacon 50 F 1.8 and Canon FD 50 F1.4. I find that on APSC I like more focal lengths like 28 to 40. 28 F2.8 vintage lenses look good on Fuji bodies and can focus very close to the subject. Thanks for your video

The old (and seemingly forgotten) Fujica ECB lenses perform very well and can be found on older Fujica bodies for fairly cheap. Not to mention it is kind of neat having the Fuji name with the modern camera :)
    I just bought:
    • 28mm f.2.8
    • 50mm f 1.4
    • 135mm f3.5
Looking forward to putting them to use this spring!

I’ve been using Minolta MD lenses on my Fuji X-E3 since I already had a number of lenses for the Minolta X500 I’ve owned since 1985. The camera and lenses are all still performing perfectly so it is very satisfying to be putting them to further use.

I’m a big fan of adapting old manual focus lenses to my X-E2s. Since I shoot mainly landscapes, I don’t need an autofocus lens . I have to admit, though, I have a serious case of OGAS (old gear acquisition syndrome). I also shot film and picked up a Minolta X-370 that is in mint condition for a very reasonable price. Who needs new gear when there’s so much great vintage gear out there?

Yay! I've been waiting for this video! Thanks so much for covering this topic Chris!
The Pentax 50mm is so beautiful. The Minolta MD 50mm f1.4 is also such a beautiful lens too. The Canon FD 70-210mm F4 Macro zoom is a great lens as well, with an IBIS camera it creates some great shots for under £50.
These type of lenses have been my go to lenses over Fuji lenses due to the price difference. Currently rocking a Fuji XC 15-45mm and saving up for the XC 55-200mm (due to prices in South Africa, currently the XC 55-200 is ZAR4000 while the XF version is ZAR11000)

I've picked up a few over the years, from pentax/takumar, these are my favourites: SMC m 50mm f1.7, then SMC Tak 55mm f1.8 as well as the Tak 35mm f3.5... My BEST VALUE EVER lens is the Pentacon 50mm f1.8. Close focus of about 30cm and super dreamy bokeh (it's not sharp wide open but it's got masses of character!) And f4 upwards is very sharp. I got one for £5 - although I did have to clean the blades for that price. A fully working one should be £15-20 on ebay. Superb for the price. I also got an SMC M 135mm f3.5 - another bargain and a fantastic lens - and not huge either.

Old MF lenses are great on mirrorless, but I would avoid the wider focal lengths as due to the flange distance of SLRs, their optics are compromised. From 40mm on though....
On APSC the 50-55mm standard lenses make great short telephoto's, but I find even better for not much more money are the macro lenses in the same range.

Hi Chris... I'm a bit confused about using vintage lenses with adapter. I've just ordered an k&f adapter from nikon f mount to fuji camera. I've done lots of research and came out with few answers. For instance if we use a nikon f mount 50mm on a fuji camera then it should be equivalent to 75mm however there are people saying if a fullframe 50mm lens using adapter mount into fuji camera will still have the same focal length. Now I'm confused whether the 50mm going to be 75mm full frame equivalent or 50mm. Thanks

Sorry though but if I do join the Patreon it will most likely be for a month only, I’m unable to work and with the way energy prices etc are going, little luxuries like this will have to be put on hold

Vintage 135mm lenses are particularly brilliant and usually cheap - even the 2.8 versions. No XF lens of mine can match the pop I get from my old Zuiko 135 f3.5, that I paid just 17 quid for in mint unused condition. Hipster inflation has seen prices rise for FD and OM Zuiko lenses but they're still dead cheap. If anyone wants to buy me an old Olympus 21mm f2 lens there are a coupe on Ebay right now - for around £5500 a piece! A more realistic dream lens for me would be the Nikkor 105mm f/1.8. Again, prices have crept up but I've seen them go for £350 quite recently. Even that might seem expensive but it's one of the best lenses ever conceived for XF 27mm f2.8 kind of money. No brainier and a good investment piece too. Lots of fun to be had.

Adapted to the X-T class body, it is terrific. One advantage over the Nikon DSLR is that with my Fuji body set to hybrid mechanical/electronic shutter, I can shoot at f/1.4 in bright light and get av very nice rendering and background blur.
I also adapt my 90mm Elmarit Leica M lens which has allowed me to forgo the XF 90mm, which may be better, but would be a low use lens for me, thus unjustifiable.

Be sure to go into your menu and set the camera to fire WITHOUT lens, since the camera does not recognize that you have anything attached to camera. You have to buy an adapter. I got mine from Amazon. Just search Amazon for your camera and the lens you want to attach, and a product will appear.

Any vintage lens will work, and they can be found just about anywhere, from ebay to thrift stores to yard sales. An adapter will be required, which is a simple metal cylinder with one end that accepts the lens, and the other end has a mount that matches the camera, in your case the Sony E-mount. Adapters for the E-mount are available for just about any common vintage lens mount. You really can't go wrong starting with a Pentax/Takumar (either the M42 mount or the K-mount), the Canon (FD mount), Olympus (OM mount), Konica, and others which are plentiful.

Yes but they’re readily available for mirrorless and dummy adapters are cheap.

Nice move! Though let me tell you, these vintage Pentax lenses are a very slippery slope... I started off with a couple of sub-£100 bargains, and a year later I'd spent 10 fold! 🤭 Still, I'm not saying I'm unhappy or anything ;)

Get the Pentax K 28mm 3.5. Not the m version and not the m42 version. It is untouchable.
