  • You DON'T need a high resolution camera. In this video I talk about why you can be very happy with an older, lower resolution camera for most of your photography needs. I show examples from the Fujifilm X-T1 and the Fujifilm GFX100s. #fujifilmgfx100s #fujifilmcamera #fujifilm #fujifilmxt1

I am a retired professional photographer all my pro work was on film, I only bought a Dslr in 2014, A Nikon D200 which I took photos of the poppies at the tower of London.
I still have this camera I also have a Fuji film X-T10 and X-T1, also an X-E1.
The most modern camera I have is a Sony A7. I am not really interested in the more modern camera as I think they have engineered all the soul out of them. I also have all my film cameras including Nikon F4, Nikon FE2 and s90x. medium format Pentax 645.
I try to rotate the use of them.
So go and get an older camera and enjoy

I still follow the old scanner rule, 2x output resolution.
That means for what most people are posting... They need 8.3 MP.
I'm a sucker for punishment. More pixels means more magnification in macro. Also means more pain when doing stacks.
If you intend to print larger like 13"x19", you will still need about 22MP.

Ever since I had a 16MP camera, I found that to be enough to have room for cropping, not bogging down the system while editing and not taking up too much disk space.
If I didn't need better autofocus in low light, I would still only be using my X-T1. In the meantime I got an X-S10 which has 26MP, but I would be perfectly happy if it only had 16MP.
The only time I wish I had a higher MP camera is when shooting far away birds.

There are several sweet spot sensor sizes that can almost be seen as enough. 16mega pixels is satisfying and doesn’t stray into hyper reality. Good glass and a good sensor followed by good bit depth and colour science keeps it real. I am enjoying 16mp on an older camera and the power of Lightroom gives me lots of creative options. Lots of marketing hyperbole insisted on a numbers based arms race for various features and most use cases don’t need those super-elevated specs. The manufacturers want us to re buy the latest iteration of the camera we currently own and it’s a strategy that usually runs out of road in time.

I am a professional photographer in Australia and I fully agree with Chris on this video. I would say if you own a GFX camera you probably need to be making some money from that Photography to really justify unless you just got a really good job where you make a lot of money and you like spending money on gear and there are a few people that do that however the image quality is simply outstanding but it's a bit like driving a Ferrari. You better know how to drive that thing or else will show up your faults pretty quickly in fact the more megapixels you go for the better Photography you need to be to drive that Ferrari........ As Chris mentioned, sometimes it's more satisfying driving an old Datsun and seeing what you can do with that Datsun. But they will come a point as you improve that that you may need to upgrade your gear and that's okay too. It is interesting because I own a $200 Sony RX 100 and I've taken some amazing photos with a camera that's worth about 150 bucks and I also a GFX camera with $4000 and I've also taken amazing photos with that. What I would mention is the better quality lenses spend money on lenses not bodies

@@ChrisOrange yeah I definitely agree mate and some of the older cameras make you work harder for the shot. You need to get the exposure right? I have to admit that sometimes with my GFX camera I get a bit lazy knowing that you can just underexposed and rescue everything pretty much in editing, but it has amazing quality and has its place but I also have some smaller cameras that I use as well. Yeah, and especially the way RUclips is flooded with new gear is almost making it addictive to watch those videos and buy new gear

LOVE the photo of the sailboat! Looks like some of the pastel art I have hanging in my home. High contrast and punched up colors are great - if it works for the subject or context of the photo but, it is frequently over rated and I left those days decades ago when I was in art college. So much of my color film work is aimed at getting soft colors. So much so that I dislike shooting color with my Hasselblad system in favor of the Mamiya TLR, because of the high contrast optics of the Hassy.

It depends. I have 2 of each (1 of eac model for AF and MF). Ha, Ha! So, as a single camera, to do everything, I would recommend an X-T1 and add a battery grip. It has a nicer viewfinder, is better balanced with longer lenses, has weather sealing and has better manual controls for ISO and manual focus. However, if you want small light and handy, the X-T10 is a better choice. The AF is a bit snappier. The body is lighter and smaller (not that the X-T1 is particularly heavy even with the battery grip) and it has a built in flash. I find if I am going out specifically to take pictures, I grab the X-T1. If I am just going out, but want a camera with me it's the X-T10 every time. Honestly you can't go wrong with either. Also consider the X-E2 or 2(s). They go for more money nowadays than the X-T1 or 10, but are just as likeable and it may be worth the extra money if you like the "rangefinder" form factor.

The decision should be around what is needed for what type of photography you're doing. If you're a professional sports photographer you need something very different than a street photographer for example. I'm an amateur/enthusiast who shoots a variety of things. But, I'm not selling anything nor do I have clients demanding anything. I'm having fun. Back when I was shopping I looked at so many different choices and patiently shopped for almost a year before buying my X-T3. It was a barely used, still in the box and wrapping with the 18-55. I looked at some X-T1 and T2 bodies as well as some FF bodies. But, the prices of the bodies alone were high comparatively and I still would have had to buy glass which offset the difference. As for the FF systems, I realized the lenses were going to cost too much for me. So, I got the X-T3 at a good price. I still have it. With some patient shopping I bought two more XF lenses(56 and 90) and I'm very happy. I also have a few vintage lenses that I have fun using. But, the sensor in the X-T3 is definitely plenty. Would it be nice to have more room to crop sometimes? Sure, but not necessary. Have a great day!!

I believe that the Sony RX100 M6 is the apex camera for this reasons discussed in this video. 24-200mm focal length, flash, 20MP, truly pocketable, great AF, IQ is decent for most use cases that don't involve pixel peeping. It doesn't get enough love because its a Sony.

I shoot an X-S10 right now and it's an extremely capable and fantastic camera, but I mean I started digital photography shooting a Nikon D40 and then D200, with 6MP and 10MP CCD sensors respectively. And I never had a problem shooting landscape photography on such low resolution cameras, I've taken some of my favourite images on the D200. Frankly the lenses were probably the biggest limiting factor in the old days of DX lol. But, printing is probably the biggest issue at those resolutions, as you of course cannot print very large. And as digital cameras they were very basic and limited in their technology/functionality, compared to today where I'm blessed by eye detect AF and IBIS lol

A good workman buys the best tools he can afford ..... and that depends on the type of work he is doing and how much he expects to get paid. As a hobbyist you buy whatever takes your fancy within your price bracket..... and often that has little to do with specifications and more to do with how and whether you enjoy using a specific camera. There is a world of difference between what is 'good enough' for professionals and 'what I desire' for amateurs. Try before you buy .... and then buy the best you can afford. The one fundamental fact with owning high end gear is that the only thing to blame for bad photos is the mug behind the viewfinder.

So I ended up buying and X-T1 with a shutter count of only 3000. After a while I thought, OK this is fun. So I ordered the X-T5 and that is an absolutely incredible camera. But for some reason, I can’t get my self to sell the X-T1, but I still use it on occasions. With a pancacke lens, it is so light and compact that I can easily have it in my pocket, which I sometime do. And the pictures are just as great as from the X-T5, allthough the 40 mp sensor give a lot more flexibility in croping, and other stuff.

Photographers that need the resolution know they need it (really thinking just wildlife photographers that often have to crop)
It is a myth you need a high resolution to print, now don't get me wrong as someone that prints gallery quality images I'll never refuse more resolution.
However for print, viewing distance is the key, If you are viewing from arms length you really want as many DPI as possible, however once you start printing bigger than 12" by 8" the viewing distance is extended so you need less DPI.
Basically who your audience and what medium they are viewing the image determines the required resolution.
However as far as how the camera feels to use, the speed improvements from X-T3 onwards make me not want to go back to the original X-T1
I'm loving the 40MP sensor on the X100VI and having just a fixed 23mm lens being able to crop and still have 20MP or 10MP is a bonus
However I know from Printing when I print 16" by 12" you could not tell whether I used a 40MP or 26MP

Maybe your title is a little misleading? I know you have to do what you have to do to get the clicks, but let's face it, unless you are a pro you don't NEED a camera at all, much less a camera with a ton of megapixels. A modern cell phone can take great pictures. And off course 'high res' is a moving target year to year. What was high res 15 years ago is average res compared to most iPhones now.
Up until a year ago I would have agreed with the idea of high megapixel cameras being unnecessary. I had shot for years with a Nikon D750 and for a while with a Fuji X100v. I was convinced that around 20mp was enough for my needs (wants). After all, I still have framed 13x19 prints in my home made with my 10mp Nikon D200 and they look as good as they ever did.
But last year I made the move to Nikon mirrorless and bought a used Z7 at 45mp and it has been a revelation. I did not buy the Z7 for the resolution or making bigger prints; and no, I'll probably never print larger than A2. I bought it because I got a deal on it. I have found that making huge prints isn't the point at all. The point is the ability to crop when needed. There is a huge amount of flexibility and freedom here. The thing is, for that to be viable you have to have lenses that can resolve as well as your sensor. So far the Nikon S lenses I have do that with no problem.
It also gives your lenses a little more reach. I can switch to crop sensor mode and my 70-200 effectively becomes a 140-300 (ish) with close to the same resolution as my D750.
So sure, hobbyists don't "need" high res, but it does offer significant benefits beyond big prints.
