It will work every time as the no. Of cards to be moved (alphabets in word) is always such that any combo of 2 numbers adding up to that number and when applied to the reversed order piles will bring the same card. E.g. if u have 4 cards and the word is 'the' which is 3 letters then any combo of (3 & 0) or (2&1) applied to the reversed piles will get the same card on top. Moving 2 cards ( Ace&2) on first pile and one card (4) on 2nd pile will leave the card 3 on top.

It's all math u can do the same trick with the whole deck u put all the cards starting with the A K Q than so on same suit in all 4 piels put the 4 sets of cards on top if each other than u tell the person to cut the deck 13 times and it will come 4As 4Ks 4 Qs and all the way down 2 4 2s
