Now that we have potatoes and carrots, and things to cook with them in the game, it would be nice if you could make planter boxes for them that you would have to water once in a while and then get more ingredients from them. Ranger's stew is a great source of vitamin C for when you can't or don't want to fish all the time for your food, and it gives you a reason to hunt rabbits and deer for their meat, and not just pelts and guts. Hey Zak, Raph specifically mentions in his post that safehouse items will have a transporting weight! There's going to be a load of intrepid explorers lugging 30kg vices and other assorted home improvements round the Great Bear.
That's where using the travois will become more usefulll, right now i only use it for big load of meat, i admit not having to go back 10 times to get my bear meat back home is a huge plus. I love this thing, but i will love it even more with this update.

Man the safehouse customization is one of the coolest features they could add to a game this far along in it's life cycle. That's really cool to see. Ton of great time to be had in TLD
The most annoying part of this update for me will be moving all the hoarded gear and materials out of the house and out of the way while I redecorate. The deer and wolves are gonna whitness a whole renovation project go down at camp office
I really love Keeper's Pass. I think it's the most compact region with everything needed for an extended stay. There's the fishing house for food and vitamin C, the surrounding caves for coal, and the trailer with beds and a workbench. It's got a unique look to it as well, the high walls all around.
A lot of the safehouse customization features they are promising are already available with mods, it's cool that they are implementing it into the actual game, though i wish they had at least mentioned the modders work.
The workbench this is so so perfect! Not only does it allow me to base at places I wouldn't normally go to, but places with workbenches I'd never usually go to, I'd be more inclined to do so to get the vice to make a bench where I will go!
I have three places I'd love to spruce up for a base and am looking forward to cleaning them all up! 1. Farmstead in MT - It has an outdoor workbench close by, lots of hunting opportunities, six burner stove and the house is only one level so easy to navigate in the dark. Right now it is so cluttered I usually avoid it as a base for aesthetic purposes. 2. Mountaineers hut in TWM - Fantastic base with lots of nearby resources, I love the rugged look and location but also nice and cozy, additionally easy to navigate in the dark. 3. Spencer's homestead BR - Large house with six burner stove, numerous hunting opportunities, beautiful location, unfortunately the largeness doesn't make it easy to navigate in the dark.
Taking the workbench from Gold Mine to Homesteader’s Respite will be clutch. I love that base given the safety and proximity to the best fishing spot in the game (not to mention nearby bear, moose, and ptarmigan hunting)
The moving of Workbenches is interesting. I'm trying to thing of places that I would want a workbench, and the one place that comes to mind is the Miners Quarters in ZOC. I also like the idea of taking the one out of the Gold Mine just because I don't like making that trip more then once.
One location that BADLY needs a worktable is Thomson Community Center in PV. And as for where to get vises, there are so many worktables in Carter. Woo hoo!
I like making my base at the fishing camp in coastal highway, and it would be nice to be able to move the outdoor workbench there inside, dunno if the tables inside the cabin there would be suitable tho
People will always make their own 'user' game content given these new tools. I think an undertaker challenge where you move from area to area laying the corpses to rest (by removing them from the game) might be interesting, but still respectful, measuring either the number or speed (or both).
Great video Zak. The safe house customization is what I've been looking forward to since the expansion pass was announced and I can't wait for it. That said I HATE the Timberwolf change.
17:40 the change of Timberwolfes is great. I fear Timberwolfes that much, that I don’t spend time in BR or BI, although I like the region. The new mechanic is great for me.
Paradise Meadow Farm for me. Basically because I always start my games in the Milton region to get myself stocked up and prepared before truly venturing out into the rest of the game proper.
6:39 I really like that you can't move the corpses, and reason they gave for preventing that. Sure we've all had fun playing with this in various FP games, but Long Dark is a different cut. LD is raw, and honest, and respectful.
Zak when this releases you should totally take a vice from some bench and then go to HRV and make a workbench in the bunker and then see how long you can survive there with it. I think a lot of players will enjoy trying that out.
When the update is released you should have people send in their safe house builds and do "Cribs - The Long Dark"-ish reviews. Not sure if it's just a simple as sending save files but it'd be entertaining and potentially inspiring content. :D
Not a huge fan of Timberwolves but it certainly adds more worry to travel and makes sense. I personally can't wait to clean up the farm house in PV and as you said Quonset in CH. The workbench one is going to be nice because I like the farmhouse in Milton but the workbench is outside but being able to move it inside or even to grey mothers house will be nice.
I’m honestly really psyched about making the Community Center in Pleasant Valley my safehouse location. I prefer it to Quonset due to the amount of natural light, and it has the fireplace in addition to the 6-slot oven. It really is about the light tho - I can’t stand running a lantern during the day if I can help it, and Quonset is *just* dark enough to annoy me. The only downside to the community center was no workbench, but given that I’ll be able to remendy that… I think the space will work really nicely for decoration and overall utility. edit: I’m also holding out hope that the root cellar box thingy in the basement of Pleasant Valley Farmhouse will be craftable/moveable. I want to store all my potatoes and carrots in it closer to a kitchen space. (yes I know the whole idea is that they’re in the basement - but still)
One little thing I look forward to is moving the outside workbenches inside-particularly those that are right next to a cozy little cabin. I hope that’s possible, and that those workbenches aren’t just static.
Don't have the game yet, but my dream base locations (with strategies aside) would be one of these: Cabin in Mystery Lake, a-frame on Timberwolf mountain, or the fire lookout (forgot location). Can't help it -- I feel safer in small spaces with wide, sweeping views. I need to be able to see what's coming. There's probably some inherent psychological reason for that. Honestly, the entire game is beautiful and I wouldn't mind building a base anywhere. Can't wait to play it for myself. My crappy old laptop can't handle it and I need to be able to afford a crappy new one first. It's going to be awhile. Thanks so much to Zak for this video!! My TLD go-to even beforehand.
Oh man, I'm so excited to start a new game when this update comes out, should be so much fun, and it will make it way easier to live in different places
i kinda wished some of the feats were more useful, some of them are useless while others (darkwalker) are just a debuff. if i were able to give feed back for an update for the feats these are what id change. 1. darkwalker: while being useful for endless night its just a nerf to you in any normal playthrough as theres more daylight then night time, the extra fatigue loss at day messes with crafting times that require light. this makes it pretty useless seeing as id want to not get tired while im crafting not when im gonna sleep to pass time. My change to darkwalker would be: actions that require light, no longer require light. this would make it really useful during endless night runs and fairly useful during normal runs. as we all know the only thing to do at night is sleep so you can actually do stuff at day time, this change would make cabin fever less of a problem as you would be able to craft something that would normally take 3 days (12 hour intervals) to something around 1 and a half days given the amount of food or water you have on hand. i have more ideas but nobody will want to read a book in a comment. lmk your feat change ideas if you want.
This is really exciting. I hope we will be able to put items closer together. My favorite location to settle is the gas station in Coastal Highway. Has everything I need and it's not too big so I can find the bed in the pitch black darkness, unlike the Pleasant Valley Farmhouse, which is my second favorite because of the stove. There are still several regions I've never been to.. Timberwolf Mountain is one of them because I thought it would have Timberwolves! Apparently not..
18:59 I think the 4-5 maps will be Timberwolf mountain, pleasant valley, mystery lake, coastal highway and forlorn muskege and my reasoning is is because those are the maps between blackrock and bleak. If it’s to be to allude to timbies migrating, then they could be going between the two timbie-infested regions. I don’t think raph is including the dlc in this if he didn’t mention sundered pass. I could be wrong but that’s my theory
I love their plan for the workbench. My plan is to deconstruct all 4 workbenches in the dam that I have never once used and placing them in locations I’ve always wanted a workbench. I also plan to break down the workbench at the farm in PV and the basement at FA and rebuild them on the ground floor where there’s natural light. Also, workbench at Greymother’s in MT is huge!
Planing to fix camp office in mystery lake. I imagine it could become very cozy. Also In the hopes that I'm not the only survivor left, and I have a nice place to help others...
I was more than surprised with how many options we are now getting with safehouse customization. I really thought it would be maybe 3 to 5 interiors per region or something. For me personally, I think Mountaineers Hut would be my first priority for Lower Great Bear (the roof and getting a bit more storage, remove the second bed, etc.) and Drift Island cottage in FA (would move the workbench inside). Does anyone know if we can also change the stoves?
I'm already cleaning and redecorating Quonset I'm my head into a stylish loft kind Appartment. Industrial style is it! But maintenance yard would be even better, it has the most magnificent lighting in the game... Can't wait to start
A lot of people avoid regions with Timberwolves all together. They can be a run ender early game. Idk what made hinterland decide this was a good idea but a lot of people are going to complain or quit the game entirely because of it.
the main thing I want in the game is passive snow melting, threw out the game you find buckets, so why can't you fill them with snow and leave them in your base, like if your at farm house in PV and you have both the fire place and the stove going at the same time the indoor temp can get up to 127f or 50 plus c, any snow should melt in those temps. and most bases are above freezing so the water shouldn't freeze, and all we would have to do is collect the dirty water and bring it to the stove to boil, because if each of the metal pails are lets say 3 to 5 gallons, we could keep adding snow until they are fully filled, and we have lets say 5 or 6 six of metel pails that would be 15/25 to 18/36 gallons of dirty water just store in the base and if we have the purifying tablets, we would be able to have a way to get clean water in an emergacy, lol its the little things that make me go mhh we should be able to do so but no
The timberwolves will be interesting. If they aren't a persistent regional threat, that'll be acceptable. Main safe house? There are so many though... Bleak Inlet Firewatch.
actually so pumped for this , FINALLY safehouse customisation!! this has potential to be the best update for the game so far, sad to see that they dont have any plans to make more dlcs, i wish we could have at least one more before they drop TLD to make other games
I understood that a craft workbench doesn’t make the weapons etc that the current workbench makes so if you take the vice to make the craft workbench you can make the furniture or whatever but not weapons. So you have to decide what you are going to have. It looks like you can’t convert the table back to a normal workbench.
just downloaded the DIY (base building) mod for this game the other day, and now im learning of this update, the timing is wild. i assume the update will break this mod but im more than happy to get this legitimately from the devs of this game and see if they can pull it off better than the mod, im sure they will
I'm shivering my Timbers (wolves). But maybe this will help me face my fears, and if there is a chance of them not spawning then whew! But please God, the Bearded God of Hinterland, not Mystery Lake😢
I really want them to update the custom settings. That's something I'm so excited about lol I'm hoping it will be clearer what the options mean and a few new ones too. I can't wait to set up a safe house though, that seems like it was a huge undertaking for them so I intend to make full use of it. Also the Timberwolves thing sounds pretty cool. I usually turn them off on custom games when I want a more chill experience but to make up for that I make the regular wolves harder to break away from once they get ahold of you. Stuff like that is so fun in custom settings. Want more loot? Do that! But make blizzards happen more often. If you give yourself a leg up, also give yourself a handicap. It's a fun play style for me!
I don't mean this to be sarcastic, but are YOU being sarcastic? Maybe it's just me, but it feels like the whole game is totally secluded! So much so that I sometimes wish they would add a dog or allow us to train a wolf! LOL
@@marygatdula2744 Not being sarcastic at all. To each their own. Even though the whole game is about the isolation and solitude, being higher up in the mountains brings a different level of peace and quiet. Except for that one bear, there is nothing else around. I personally love mountains and hike up every chance I get.
Maybe a coastal highway house, I'm not sure… I definitely will tidy up the camp office, but what to do? I'm not looking forward to the wildlife adjustment, but maybe it won't be so awful with the travois…
I'm excited about the permanent store. I love this game, I want merch from this game especially some coffee cups. Also most of all, as a Canadian, I want to support a Canadian company that has made such an incredible world set in Canada
Wish list.. I want to have the ability to befriend a wolf. Helping you catch small pray like rabbits, protect you or alert you to danger. Very excited about this update! Thank you for the campfire chat.
Thanks for the video Zak :D I love Mountaineers Hut and I think it will still win as my dream base to customise. It may be too small for my interior decor ambition though... I have to think about it 😂
The PV barn south of the birch forest with the truck inside, I'll finally have a good setup for that, now that I can make a workbench. I'll happily use it as a main base. I don't care if ot doesn't have a 6 stove top.
Honestly if I can I will probably trick out a cave. I spent a good 50 some days living in the cave in Milton basin on stalker. I usually play interloper however, and on interloper its way less viable because you have to travel so far for a workbench. If I could craft a workbench and a proper bed in that cave I would be set on interloper. I love that area, its so easy to hunt, and you have a birch forest right there for wood and birch bark. Its also pretty close to forge, and you can cure pelts in the cave. Only real downside is no workbench unless you climb 2 ropes or go to the muskeg.
Thanks Zak, Timbers guarding Angler´s Den on Spawn, ouch 😨. Still no comment on The Hunted Part 3. Wonder if the "To be continued..." will disappear instead?

There's the fishing house for food and vitamin C, the surrounding caves for coal, and the trailer with beds and a workbench. It's got a unique look to it as well, the high walls all around.
A lot of the safehouse customization features they are promising are already available with mods, it's cool that they are implementing it into the actual game, though i wish they had at least mentioned the modders work.
The workbench this is so so perfect! Not only does it allow me to base at places I wouldn't normally go to, but places with workbenches I'd never usually go to, I'd be more inclined to do so to get the vice to make a bench where I will go!
I wouldn't have anticipated moving work benches but that will be sick for trying to make a base in the watch towers
@@Hoagie_ManYeah, nothing like getting into the middle of a build at that workbench, only to have the bear come wandering up...
If the vice does indeed have carry weight, I foresee a lot more people learning the Gold Mine exit goat. Good luck.
Worker residences in BI needed a workbench so badly...
People will always make their own 'user' game content given these new tools. I think an undertaker challenge where you move from area to area laying the corpses to rest (by removing them from the game) might be interesting, but still respectful, measuring either the number or speed (or both).
Maybe it could be called "as the dead sleep".
It would've been cool if removing a corpse placed a tombstone or sticks as a cross near the house.
The hunting lodge at Broken Railroad: I would move the workbench upstairs, where the light is better, and coat out the broken bedframes.
My favourite (if a bit remote) base in the world.
11:15 cant wait to do a challenge run of collecting all the work benches in the world and building them in ur base :D
That'll be funny, just have camp office or Thompson's Crossing hall with a dozen work benches in it
Paradise Meadow Farm for me. Basically because I always start my games in the Milton region to get myself stocked up and prepared before truly venturing out into the rest of the game proper.
That is a great base, feels so home-like. I've spent several weeks there in my longest-so-far run.
Sure, but there already is a workbench in the Tales bunker there. But without that, yes, would be interesting
When the update is released you should have people send in their safe house builds and do "Cribs - The Long Dark"-ish reviews. Not sure if it's just a simple as sending save files but it'd be entertaining and potentially inspiring content. :D
Yep, you just copy paste save files to another folder to make a backup. I do it all the time.
Thanks Zaknafein! I really like your accent, sniggery laugh and breakdown of the subject! Please keep it up!
Genuinely one of the best content creators in terms of explaining game mechanics I've come across in too many thousands of hours of games
Fishing hut tiny(safe) house!
Thanks for the no B.S. approach to these Campfire vids.
I love the lodge in Broken Railroad. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. 😍
Me too
I’m honestly really psyched about making the Community Center in Pleasant Valley my safehouse location.
The hunting lodge, the ranch house I think it's called in MT and grey mothers house are probably gonna be some of the coolest houses to decorate
Thanks for the video. I'm getting pretty excited for the update and it's fun to think about what we're in store for. I was hoping for fur rugs.
The Long Dark is such a great experience this time of year
My plan to customize these bases, Carter Hydro Dam, the Abandoned Prepper Cache in Pleasant Valley and the Coastal Houses in Coastal Highway.
Sounds great. I would like a clock. The sun moon thing is not very accurate.
So much to look forward to in this next patch!
So glad i was lucky enough to get a jackrabbit transport mug from the pop-up store! I use it everyday for my evening beverage.
Great news for a great game made by a great studio
They should let us harvest animal head for head mount decorations
Hell yessss!!!
Yes. If we throw away position on the map, I would also love to fix up the broken railroad hunting lodge. It's my favorite POI.
Weather Station refurbish, for the person who likes to get away from everything - Thanks Zak
I feel the timberwolves change is necessary as it exposes many players to them who would otherwise just ignore the regions where they dominate
Good point
Thanks, Zak!
I'm almost more excited about the store My Hinterland hoodie desperately needs to be replaced. lol
Like they add more maple sapling when travois added, i hope they add more birch sapling and flares (marine or regular) for Timberwolves.
Game infinitely spawns maple and birch if you regularly beach comb.
I know for beach combing, but im dont lucky on my interloper run. Also i chop most of birch sapling.
Planing to fix camp office in mystery lake. I imagine it could become very cozy. Also In the hopes that I'm not the only survivor left, and I have a nice place to help others...
OH boy, I've been waiting for this!
My base is either going to be one of the two cabins in Forsaken airfield or the three summit cabins in sunderd pass.
A lot of people avoid regions with Timberwolves all together. They can be a run ender early game. Idk what made hinterland decide this was a good idea but a lot of people are going to complain or quit the game entirely because of it.
I'm probably gonna stop playing due to the timber wolves
DH Dunn has a delightfully excited take on this info. Worth a look!
Agree!
I will finally be able to buy stuff from the store, yes! Great video Zak!
Oh no timberwolves on other regions 😥
Disable Timberwolves - Check!
Its good to include them, you will get used to them soon enough
Yes! Finally , one of the best changes.
@@cupidwxingspeople don't like those regions for a reason
@@metafluffygamez it's kinda stupid to lose half the map beacuse you can't figure out one game mechanic. There's 100s of vids on how to get past them.
the main thing I want in the game is passive snow melting, threw out the game you find buckets, so why can't you fill them with snow and leave them in your base, like if your at farm house in PV and you have both the fire place and the stove going at the same time the indoor temp can get up to 127f or 50 plus c, any snow should melt in those temps. and most bases are above freezing so the water shouldn't freeze, and all we would have to do is collect the dirty water and bring it to the stove to boil,
because if each of the metal pails are lets say 3 to 5 gallons, we could keep adding snow until they are fully filled, and we have lets say 5 or 6 six of metel pails that would be 15/25 to 18/36 gallons of dirty water just store in the base and if we have the purifying tablets, we would be able to have a way to get clean water in an emergacy, lol its the little things that make me go mhh we should be able to do so but no
We would need some kind of labels for cupboards, something that we can write on. Oh, I am quite excited for all the new stuff :)
Thank you for the update video👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I can't wait!
just downloaded the DIY (base building) mod for this game the other day, and now im learning of this update, the timing is wild. i assume the update will break this mod but im more than happy to get this legitimately from the devs of this game and see if they can pull it off better than the mod, im sure they will
I discovered a glitch with curtains on certain windows flipping upside down when in clean up mode. I can’t wait to find the worksman tools. 🎉
I've not played this game for so many years but I think I'll give it a try next month just to try the base building.
The hunting lodge is my favorite! I cant wait to fix it up!
im so pumped 🥰
I hope you can add six-burner stoves. Only thing I’m missing in my primary base right now
I'm shivering my Timbers (wolves).
So i would suspect that Timberwolves may use existing Black Wolf Pack spawns. Basically anywhere you tend to see 3-4 black wolves together.
This is all I've ever wanted!!!
Miner's Folly as a base camp for total isolation and being high up in the region. Not the most strategic but just to enjoy the solitude.
I want the art book for sure too !!!
it always felt like house customization was the big missing thing
I'm excited about the permanent store. I love this game, I want merch from this game especially some coffee cups. Also most of all, as a Canadian, I want to support a Canadian company that has made such an incredible world set in Canada
Great video. Thanks
Wish list.. I want to have the ability to befriend a wolf. Helping you catch small pray like rabbits, protect you or alert you to danger. Very excited about this update! Thank you for the campfire chat.
Thanks for the video Zak :D
I love Mountaineers Hut and I think it will still win as my dream base to customise.
That would be cool if we could make a hay bed from hay bales
And thats why I love this game so much
Grey mothers house is gonna be my first safehouse
Thank you Sir.
22:00 i wonder why on mug package is "fragile" :)
Mugs are pretty fragile, no? :)
