yea that been my top issue with the game. game is fairly realistic. yet we cant move items? that said. be hard to move storage locker in wilderness..... now they got that sled thing so it does make it more realistic. doable.
I wouldn't mind of the trader is someone you can eventually meet and interact with in person. Particularly, if you have to first repair the radio towers in order to even make that initial contact. And / or if you have to get all the way to Perseverance Mills, or some other map that is quite removed from the game-start. If those restrictions are in place, then your first several hundred days of a run will still be alone in the wilderness. I like the idea that the trader might be a reward for a long run -- and not someone you would be able to contact early game.
I really like the safehouse customization. maybe its because I'm sentimental, but the best feeling in the game for me is coming to my main home after a long journey, and being able to customize it gives me more of that feeling.
i'm excited for base customizing becuase if it allows you to clean up messes, then you can clear the counters/bookselfs/shelffs off so you have more space to put items with out getting the annoying thing of unable to put an item in a spot
I'm hoping Hinterland sees a benefit in continuing to bring out one or more DLCs with new regions, new items/gear and maybe even more tales or more stuff to do with the Handheld radio. I love this game a lot and would happily give them 30 more bucks for another DLC like this. Doesn't matter if it takes 2 years again.
I’ve been looking forward to safe house customization for a while. Moving furniture will be great of course, but I hope they simply make it easier to organize things on shelves. It’s so annoying how you aren’t able to place certain items right next to each other
Hi Zak, Yes, I ABSOLUTELY would like another DLC someday. As well as hot springs( in VERY limited quantity) that one can bathe in to recover condition while in survival mode. Take care, your gameplay is an inspiration to me.
Hi Zaknafein. I have been playing this game for 10 years and the developers of this awesome game are the best. So many updates have been made, so many improvements. They never stopped. Whatever they create new for this game, I follow them. My dream for many years is to build a base, but I also adhere to the decoration. I love everything and I can't wait to play this DLC
Thank you @Zaknafein for that cameo of my bases tournament, can't wait to actually maybe do some with the new content lol, I appreciate it, I am so excited with the new stuff coming, your videos are amazing and I especially love your Campfire Chat videos, well done as always
We have some epic DLC coming our way and I can't wait! Really looking forward to base customization and their take on photo mode! I've been making my own personal instamatics for my journals so this is basically what I've been doing but now it's ACTUALLY in game. Love it. As far as a TLD movIe goes, I'd honestly rather see a completely different story in the world of TLD. Or...a TV series where each season is a different survivor and the end of each season is their death. I think it would be kind of cool actually. You could get really creative with all kinds of different stories to tell. Survivor stories of Max, Katie, Dave, Alan, the many survivors found in the scattered notes, etc. The possibilities are endless.
Honestly, I hope they add more tales in the future. I have been loving them so far (just finished signal void for the first time), and I feel like it adds more goals to do within the game. Like imagine a tale taking place by Timberwolf, ash canyon and blackrock.

Actually, Raph was anti-mod for a long time. I heard about stories that people talking about modding were banned from the official forum. Like any negativity is banned there. It was my impression that for Raph the game was his "child" and he didn't want people to mess with it. I think he just changed his mind recently because mods became part of the game industry.
That could definitely be true, but there's also other reasons to encourage modding too. Raph could easily understand that the life cycle of the game is finally coming to an end and that by encouraging people to breathe new life into his game, it will continue to bring in new players and a bit of extra revenue. Or he could have simply changed his stance - people do tend to change their views over time and Raph has had an entire decade since the first release of the game to consider modding. Personally as long as the outcome is positive, I don't have any issues with the why. The longetivity of the game is what's important to me.
There’s actually, still up, steam and reddit discussions where people were discussing mods, and hinterland support clearly states that mods are banned and that you need to read their terms of service. When I saw that, I was a little shocked. Gotta say, being overly negative to mods when this is a single player experience… it’s weird
Or just try to find a single thread on the steam forums which talks about which specific mods the game has. Afaik there's none. Things still haven't normalized
Since Astrid gets to the boat via Coastal Highway, I've always assumed Perseverance Mills was past the collapsed highway on the far side of Desolation Point. Edit: I'd love to see an addition to craft or repair a boat to access a new region.

I think it would be cool if they have "cougar caches" like Cougar kills buried, as they do in real life. Such as buried deer as a sign they are in the region
I am so excited for the base decoration stuff as someone who plays this as a cozy game :D Now if only Raph would give us a dog companion to follow us around
I think itd be cool if the trader worked kind of like that Methuselah guy from the Wintermute campaign where he doesnt have one fixed location but you can find him in different places around the entire world while you have active quests with him/her, and sometimes you cant find them anywhere for days at a time. I'd also like to see "maps" as a trade item. Having already completed Faithful Cartographer already I find it tedious to map each region over again on new playthroughs.
MY idea for the trader: Inb each transmission he gives you several trades each with diffrent costs, the cost are deposited in a small boat connected to a long cable stretching into the distance, you call the trader on the radio to confirm the order and the the boat is rilled into the ocean and comes back with stuff after 3-5 days.
I am actually so excited for the camera because my favourite thing to do in the long dark is walk around and take pictures of stuff on my Xbox. My camera roll is filled to the brim with them and I’m actually so excited to be able to take them with a cool camera and then put them on my wall without having to fill my storage up
Cougar 2.0 is gonna be interesting. As long as its a real animal, its gonna be fun. Most likely same brutal damage but no longer 1 shot 1 kill. And most likely it wont fear fire so it wont be cheesed like wolves or bears (campfire for bears). The wildlife refresh might also mean that spawn points will be dynamic and we wont have the same spawn points for a moose fixed at the beginning.. but they will migrate around as we progress the save. Safehouse customisation is also great.. and the trader sounds like a purpose-giver. You have to barter with him and collect what he asks for. So basically a mission giver. While for some it messes with emersion, overall i think if you view him as a purpose-giver its simply great. People were worried about tales and emersion too.. but learned to appreciate them.
I agree. Just because she arrived by boat doesn't automatically mean it was to another island. Using boats to get to places on an island just makes sense. Especially given the ruggedness and weather. It could cut days off of travel time. [Add-on edit] As far as The Trader goes, I always assumed that it was implied there were still people in the world because of the music you could hear out of the FM radios you could turn on during the aurora. But I guess a case could be made it might be a station that was put on auto at some point and only activates during the aurora.
Given there's a road leading to Perseverance Mills, that confirms its on the same landmass. We all know how bad the roads are know great bear, so using a boat to circumventing them is a sound strategy. Regarding the trader, story mode confirms other survivors, survival mode just doesn't use them, because what would the point be?
Thanks a lot Zaknafein for posting this! I do like the idea of being able to customise your main camp. What would be really good is if they gave all the animals more intelligence in this game like the bear being more cautious around a human being and learning from its experiences, so if it's had a bad experience of you to run for it if it encounters you again. Then maybe try to sneak up on you or hide and watch what you're doing. Then maybe try to sneak up to your camp and steal the meat that you have outside or follow you hiding and then rush you when you've killed and cut up a deer/moose to claim it just like the sort of thing that they would do in real life! Also, there should be the grizzly and maybe even the polar bear and the wolverine! Each with their own behaviours and strengths! That'd be awesome! And wolves should be and work together in packs cunningly, and lots more different types of prey animals!
Depending on how the camera (and cougar) actually works, I am already anticipating I am going to lose multiple runs attempting to get a cougar close-up picture and survive 😅 Also, Rand & Tomasina for Long Dark movie!
The "Safehouse Customization" reminds me of the "Hideout Furniture" mod for Stalker Anomaly. Definitely a welcome addition, and much more appropriate than Rust-style basebuilding. Would be nice if we could also patch the hole in the roof of Mountaineer's Hut.
I think it would be awesome if base customization also allowed you to build a little bit. For example, I would like to be able to repair the roof and door on the maintenance yard as well as repair the fences all the way around to keep out predators. I would also like to repair the front gate into the maintenance yard and add a much smaller back gate. I also like the idea of being able to move things and clean up as well.
I have learned so much from your videos, your way of explaining things makes it so much better. I appreciate that you are keeping it family friendly as not everyone wants the expletives in videos. Thank you Zac for all you do, keep up the great work.
I like the idea of "drop points" for the trader. For example, the trader may tell you they'll leave a rifle at the cannery if you leave two kilos of birch bark at Misanthrope 's.
The biggest impact of the safehouse customization (for me at least) is that it gives a whole new dimension of things to do during a save. Now when I'm exploring the world, in addition to looking for loot and setting up safe houses, I'll also be looking out for decorations that catch my eye. I'll start planning what I want to move where, and will probably even start visiting the more out of the way locations that I don't usually visit very often. I'll have new tasks on my list of things to do, and reasons to roam out into the world that go past just finding the basic necessities and collecting unique loot. It will do amazing things for replayability.
All in all it was good dev diary, as you said at the end it's honest and clear cut with lots of information. That being said I was hoping you'd have early access or some insider information about some of the things talked about in the dev diary, still I appriciate you coming out with this video so quickly considering I asked about it just a few days ago. Everything except the camera excites me but the part about the mod support is really interesting to me cause I use the Sky co-op mod to play the game with my friend. With the mod support perhaps the mod can get even better and make it easier for the developers to keep the mod up to date with the game. IF they make a movie i'd like it if they cast the voice actors for Astrid and William in the movie somehow. Not necessarily as their game characters but atleast something small. Talking about their upcoming games. I hope they stay with genre survival...or don't, i can't decide. I just hope the game is as immersive as TLD. Do you have any thoughts about that? Any wishes perhaps? :P
Stoked about the update, seems like a massive improvement to the long-term enjoyabilty of the game. I'm curious to see how the trader turns out. On one hand, i agree that physically meeting them would detract from that tld feel, but I also think it would be pretty neat to find their base somewhere out there. The concept art depicted them in one of those red train cars, so maybe the drop-off points will be along the tracks even if you don't directly meet
Wonderful video as always Zak. I take a break every now and then from Long dark for a while but its a game i always come back to. Nothing beats being alone in a desolated land after a hard day at work, its peaceful and i love exploring. I am one of those people that asked you to do another video of the Darkwalker, as to this day i still cannot beat it, its the one achievement i cannot seem to complete (the problem is always that one bear that attacks me every time i come back into coastal from...i think its desolation point) and then by some miracle i still make it and the dalkwalker doesnt catch up to me, i get a bit lost when i have to go up again (take the wrong path = gameover for me) - its always that part, thats where it ends for me every time.
Yes!!!! Another great campfire chat. I echo Zak's sentiment that I hope the cougar is just as brutal as before. While I initially thought a lot of players jumped the gun overcritisizing the cougar rather than giving themselves the time (and the devs the grace) to get used to their creative vision for a bit longer, I have to admit I'm very happy with what we so far know about the Cougar 2.0. Especially the dialing back the HUD, so so much better for immersion. Also EXTREMELY excited to be able to modify bases. Not sure about this trader however hmmm.....
I would have liked to experience the cougar before they took it out, even if it was not how players imagined it to work initially; it was taken out a bit too quickly I think. But I'm looking forward to seeing it implemented in its updated form!
Personal i hope the Trader is more like someone on a superate island, and basically have like a boat system or transport system where you can't see each other but can send things to each other. So to trade with him it would force you to go to a single location to communicate most likely during an aurora, a separate location to load and unload, which would allow it to be avoidable if you choose to not engage. But I'll take what i can get. One thing I wanted to add to the game was being able to collect the toys you find like the bears, tractors, boats, and such so I hope you can do something like that now.
Based on the image, which has a teddy, it seems you can collect them now. And your idea about the trader sounds good - could also be a pulley system in e.g. Ash Canyon, where he is in an inaccessible area, but you can send stuff to each other via a rope.
@@Zaknafein Im not sure the customization is going to work the way i fully want. The way I would have it work would make the toys items so you go pick them up and carry them back to your base, but I can see why not everyone would want that.
Finally! After playing with the container movement mod, I haven't been able to play without it. It is immersion breaking that tupperware and backpacks are simply locked in place. Dropping everything on the floor is absurd.
I get the impression Perseverance Mills is on or near the coast, so most likely it's part of the Coastal Highway network, probably past Desolation Point, so at some point if/when Hinterland adds it to Survival Mode, it would be extending the highway east, past the broken bridge, with some gimmick added to make the far side of that bridge now accessible, probably with one or more transition regions similar to a combination of Crumbling Highway and the series of regions needed to access The Far Territories. As for the Observatory region, it's clearly accessed through Blackrock region if added to survival, probably with the road leading up to the hydro dam extended to continue following the river as the main method of access, or at least indications that the road once did that with some rigoramal method being needed now to access it post Collapse/First Aurora.
One thing I hope for is the ability to make our own lamps or sconces, I love the idea of having lights around the paths we go or around our bases so we can see threats, also I think some sort of firewood storage or arrow holder would be nice. Pretty sure the mines in Buried Echoes has sconces you can light with a torch, though I haven't gone down there myself so I could be wrong in that regard.
I'm both excited and worried about trader, can be really unbalanced but then again it can be really refreshing and cool to turn in your gear etc for something unique
I really love Desolation Point, mostly because of the ligthhouse and it would be just amazing to customize it. But the region itself is soo far away from everything and going through crumbling highway every single time is a bit too daunting. I wish there was a direct route to coastal highway, it would make much more bearable to use DP as a main base... And at least one fishing hut.. Its almost feels like Hinterland never wanted for player to stay there for too long
I always like them adding more lore and stuff to the game. That's why I like the tales from the far Territory is it adds story to do while in survival.
I read the dev diary soon after it came out and was waiting excitedly for this campfire chat! Thanks for this, I especially enjoyed your trader skit! xD
Granted I play on Stalker, but scurvy has never been an issue for me late game with how much fish you can get with tip-ups (Bashrobe has a great fishing guide if you want to know how). And the way it works (there's a hidden counter that starts at 500, goes down by 20 per day on stalker/interloper, and shows up as an affliction when you go below 100) you can just spend a couple days eating nothing but fish to load up on Vitamin C when you're doing stuff at your base, and then eat meat when you're travelling/exploring. You can even sprint around when gathering fuel and such to burn more calories to make room in your stomach for more fish. Cooked Whitefish has 28 points of Vit-C per 1000 calories, so you'd need to eat around 18,000 cal to top up the Vit-C meter, and you burn around 125 cal/h when standing and 75 cal/h when sleeping, for about 2000 cal/day when you're just cooking/crafting, while sprinting burns 400 cal/h. [Based on numbers form the wiki]
Thank you for the explanation of the cougar. I agree that it would be much more immersive with its behavior as you described. I didn't get to interact with the original when it was first released. But simply watching others struggling with it was enough. I look forward to the new cougar. As for the Trader my knee jerk reaction is "nope, nope, and nope". I enjoy your update campfire chats I love this game!
Zak, you could act in the movie without problems. You know the game and your voice is calming. The idea of the treader being a NPC doesn't bother me at all. I miss seeing people, alive people of course 😂 The changes for animals and wildlife is interesting. I hope it's not going to ruin some parts of the map. I can't wait to see what the future brings for The Long Dark. ❤
I’m really looking forward to the next release. I’ve been holding off playing till everything is finished and it looks like it’s almost time to start up again. I can’t wait to dig into all the new cooking, fishing and animal mechanics
Very pro trader Zak. I would have like notes being left behind like momemtos with trade options, and you leave the requested items in places like Bunker or lookout towers
For the TLD movie, the perfect actor to portray the inmate Will finds in Paradise Meadows farmhouse is Sean Bean, since that guy clearly dies one way or the other.
I've been waiting for all of the story to come out before I started playing it because I don't want to be left on a cliffhanger waiting for the next part to come out I want it to be a dedicated immersive story.
Hi Mr zak, Its my birthday tommorow!! and im preparing by listening to this in the background of me playing tld. thanks for making videos like these, i always love the campfire chats

Id be SO stoked for another DLC run. Id love another tale or "thing to do".

Amazing video Zak. Very well put together. Great work as always
I always assumed the perseverance Mills was north of desolation point. And she took the boat up the coast.
I dont know about redecoration, but i'd love to be able to clean mess inside my base, corpses especially. Zak, pls, make them, i believe in you man.
Until then, there’s the Bury a Friend mod.
I like the idea of "drop points" for the trader. For example, the trader may tell you they'll leave a rifle at the cannery if you leave two kilos of birch bark at Misanthrope 's.
As for the movie: off the top of my head I would love to see Tom Hardy as Will. And Francis McDormand is absolutely perfect for Molly hoooly moly.
The wildlife refresh is exciting, and if dynamic could make the game more alive within a play through. Great chat, relaxing format to listen too. 😊
I'm here for Zak's Trader voice.
Movie trailer they made long ago was really great. My wife always shared it with friends who even didn't know about the game itself.
I had no idea this game still got updates that great
buying a rocket launcher from the long dark trader and he hits me with 'stranger, stranger! Now that's a weapon.'
Buying the DLC for the improvised socks blueprint rn
Listening to this in my boring class, super interesting even just listening to the audio, normally I still watch the video but your voice is calming
Would absolutely love another dlc, tales is AMAZING, so much content and enjoyment since like wintermute released!
I am so so pumped about so much of this! And aw Zak I’m honoured. ❤ and your trader bit was hilarious 😂
A tall ship! This is literally the coolest thing ever.
I'm also excited about the safehouse customization, wow, that should be interesting, thanks Zac for the info on these updates.😊😊
Yes, cool idea refillable with fish oil!
I wonder if The Hunted, Part 3 is still planned or not for Part 6.
Good question. It wasnt mentioned
Really hope the wildlife refresh doesnt change too much. I dont want to poop my pants from an unknown bear roar outta nowhere
Its almost feels like Hinterland never wanted for player to stay there for too long
I’m hoping they put a transition zone on the other side and have it connect to perseverance mills and pleasant valley
Safehouse customization, that’s what I proposed a few episodes ago 🎊. That’s just lovely.
23:00 LOL, Monty Python moment xD
I always like them adding more lore and stuff to the game. That's why I like the tales from the far Territory is it adds story to do while in survival.
I for one, can't wait to learn how to darn socks.
Now that I think about it, a way to make preserved food that weighs less and doesn't smell as much would be a great addition.
This update looks great, thanks for the summary video! Stay warm and stay persistent fellow travellers!
Zak, you could act in the movie without problems. You know the game and your voice is calming.
The idea of the treader being a NPC doesn't bother me at all. I miss seeing people, alive people of course 😂
The changes for animals and wildlife is interesting. I hope it's not going to ruin some parts of the map.
I can't wait to see what the future brings for The Long Dark. ❤
Awesome video my friend. I for one am so excited about all the changes. Lot's of love to you and the family Zak.
I’m really looking forward to the next release. I’ve been holding off playing till everything is finished and it looks like it’s almost time to start up again. I can’t wait to dig into all the new cooking, fishing and animal mechanics
I have been waiting years to finally see what is in the case.
If furniture can be moved between locations, there needs to be an experiment to see if it's Trapper's cabin or the bed itself that's magic.
Good thiking!
improvised socks...Im on board with that!
Very pro trader Zak. I would have like notes being left behind like momemtos with trade options, and you leave the requested items in places like Bunker or lookout towers
I'm happy that there was push back for the cougar because this sounds great. I do hope that there isn't just one though. Hopefully at least 2.
For the TLD movie, the perfect actor to portray the inmate Will finds in Paradise Meadows farmhouse is Sean Bean, since that guy clearly dies one way or the other.
Already training your voice for bedtime stories, eh papa Zak? XD Thanks for the digest as usual, I always look forward to these videos :)
I've been waiting for all of the story to come out before I started playing it because I don't want to be left on a cliffhanger waiting for the next part to come out I want it to be a dedicated immersive story.
We need a Zak cameo
Hi Mr zak, Its my birthday tommorow!! and im preparing by listening to this in the background of me playing tld. thanks for making videos like these, i always love the campfire chats
Happy birthday, in advance!
@@Zaknafein woah!!! thanks zak!!!! this makes me really happy, i hope this will be my best one yet
I only remembered to like the video because of the trader's performance. Very good!
