Hinterland: Lets add cheat death to save long runs where players died due to bugs TLD community: Lets kill ourself 3x times at the start of the game to get the debuff
Haha i know the feeling, don't worry about it. The great thing about the game is that you can take your time and learn. No need to feel competitive or "bad" as long as you enjoy your time.
Very interesting idea, I appreciate your sharing the failures prior to the success. Enjoyed this, would love to see you play it out to the afflictions clear.
The Long Dark is probably my favorite game ever, and even though this video gave me the worst and most extreme form of anxiety ever, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it in the end. Seriously though, thanks for all the stellar content, Zak. You’re a mad man lol.
it would be very cool if the game had dark touch vision mechanic. When you touch an object in the dark, it appears vaguely black and white for some time while you stand next to it. Like, touching things giving you an idea of their boundaries,
you actually already have this ingame. When your cursor approaches something interactable, you get a dot on the screen. The closer you are to the thing, the whiter the dot.
1:40 Accidently used the birch bark as tinder. I really wish they'd code it to use the other tinder first by default. Makes for a lot of clicking and mistakes when you're distracted, like with selecting the right fuel source.
Other than "game mechanics" I've never liked the fact that you require a bedroll to sleep. Like, Hinterland has severely underestimated my ability to pass out anywhere.
Even if passing out on the raw ground comes with, say, less control over how long you sleep, reduced health regen or no bonus regen, youd think uou could at least do it....
@@nahoj.2569Sure, but on the other hand, there are still benches, bedding, and rugs in many buildings.

I’ve been on a major bushcraft and survival kick on RUclips, and people LITERALLY will just not sleep before they will do that. The heat loss is massive, and so dangerous. If it’s cold enough for the air to be a problem, the ground is actually an even bigger problem.
Love to see a continuation :) I've just started trying Interloper and it has not been great lol watching you survive circumstances like this is so wild to me!! But it has taught me so much about the game and genuinely helped me be a more successful player!
I totally agree! I always played pilgrim and voyager. Always hated predators. But after watching so many of Zak and others' videos I had the urge to try interloper. Yeah... So far 2 days has been my longest survival time :D
Zak makes interloper look like a breeze lol. I thought stalker was kinda tough with all of the wolves, I can only imagine how tough interloper and especially misery is.
It does say wood matches for just a few milliseconds right at 37:51. There and gone so quick. even in slow mow but there were definitely matches right there.
I like that you didn't cut the video with only a successful run like mayn other content creators. Failing in this game is way more thrilling and interesting to watch
"We don't have water"/ "Let's cross the waterfall", the game is infuriating sometimes. Double thermal right from the start while other run, you have to search the entire world to find your second. Losing your clothing and your can is quite a challenge, especially with only 25% max condition.
that one would be able to cook oats in a can would be really something that would be very useful (and realistic)! as well as the warmth buff from cooked water, like the teas, as I wrote probably 100 times - hallo Hinterland 👋😂
Imagine a somthing you could turn on and off like scurvy where your liquids go from hot off the fire to if your freezing outside your liquids freeze up
Regarding this challenge an interesting idea might be to do a pilgrimage of sort after fully recovering the 30 days and visiting every previous spawn point you...reshuffled, whilst leaving a small memento at each one.
Great video! This challenge is definitely hard, I don't think I'll be able to do it myself haha. Honestly though, I can't help but really enjoy the grayscale vision from cheating death. Imagine they added a Colorblind Mode or something similar as a difficulty modifer like Scurvy or the Cougar.
Totally enjoyed this one, Zak, even though it totally stessed me out and I even yelled at you a couple times. LOL. I'd definitely watch you finish the challenge.
I follow you since two years, maybe more. But in this run I could clearly see, that Mastering Misery, improved your playing skills. This run is insane.
I've never survived cheating death on loper - every time I come back, I spawn in a place with no matches, no can, no food or water, and everything around me has been picked clean already. Usually the health left, plus my distance from shelter means I die of the cold, or if I make it to shelter, I cant sleep because no food or water. I guess if you plan ahead and drop stuff everywhere around the map as a backup it'd be much more reliable.
Zak starting a new challenge... Also Zak within 1 min in the game: casually finding the one failure in the game hinterland doesn't even know existed: nah, that's not ash canyon 😳🫣😋
Great new game mode! It took me three goes until I managed to find a sustainable run. Currently on Day 3 in Coastal Highway with 10% health but with full meters. I wish I had your luck with matches, it would have made the run a lot easier!
19:40 I think it's implied that if you slept without insulation from the ground you would die of hypothermia, like how your survivor comments 'I'd eat snow if the hypothermia wouldn't kill me' (even if you can't actually eat snow in-game).
I guess you could have the survivor sleep anywhere, but sleeping on bare ground would give you a major penalty to warmth, like -10° or so. If you are wrapped in 2 bear coats and 2 sweaters, you should be able to crash on the floor of a cave.
@@enderofbarts yeah or on warm places, just to have a nap on the floor. I remember that I was thinking about that some weeks ago because stupid me forgot my bedroll 🙄
Tried this yesterday and it is going surprisingly good. It seems the key is you have to REALLY splurge on matches early on to keep your teas warm and be able to explore at all. I also got a lucky coastal highway spawn + thermos and am now in ML. Found two hacksaws on the way and just found a hammer in Trapper's. As I picked it up Astrid said "thank you". First time I get that line but I agree.
I eventually got to this point on stalker recently. Game spawned me in Blackrock. Somehow I managed to literally run past the Timberwolves and leave the map, but the cold and lower hp eventually got to me on the long path to the next zone. That and the lack of a can is brutal.
that's why i tend to leave minimal supplies like a can, firewood, matches in many places (like Cook's & prison) and have a good regional base at substation. helps out in a pinch like this.
This might sound kind of odd but depending on where you spawned in blackrock I'd say it's better to make a break for TWM over keepers pass. The transition zone is a cave and the exit in TWM is near enough to the exit to pleasant valley that you can crash at the abandoned bunker at the bottom of the rope. It's a bit of a hit or miss with wildlife spawns (especially considering the landing gear is now potential cougar territory) but it's far easier than keepers pass. Combined north and south are just so long and have so little shelter it's brutal.
I love how everyone is commenting the same thing I will, which is: Hinterland: "Here's a way to cheat death up to 3 times, we've removed permadeath" TLD fans: 'Aw damn, permadeath is gone?' TLD hardcore fans: 'Aw damn, only 3 waves of debuffs?'
That soda can very close to the peaches looked quite tasty :) there could be a snow shelter close to the entrance of the zone, but yeah getting there is likely not going to happen from where you started, and not always there but they do let you sleep, then likely not shelter enough to not freeze to death. It seems to me that the game now tends to spawn crazy amounts of one random item while not spawning some random item, took me like 30 days to even find the frying pan, in less than 7 days i had found 2 revolvers for instance, and i had been in fairly loot dense regions.
Hey Zak, there is normally a cooking pot by the abandoned campsite. It can be in 3 different locations in HRV though, so it may not have been helpful in this situation
I remember when i first saw TLD when my cousin played it and i then started to watch videos on the game, back then i used to not like your videos but now i do enjoy them A LOT, younger me was kinda dumb ngl.
@@nannakurzhaar YES! Also possible to fall off a train trestle. That's a long way down. Also, it is somehow possible to fall off of a rope and bleed to death. Go figure! LOL I think they call it, "I died from over confidence." 🤣

There could be a pot in HRV, you can go up from the river canyon using a fallen tree and nearby there should be a snow shelter and a fire with a possible pot on it.

Hinterland: So we introduced this new feature to make the game less punishing.
Interloper players: Extra debuffs from day 1, you say?
Hinterland: Lets add cheat death to save long runs where players died due to bugs

Agree
birch bark should be default tinder.
@@winnsanity1243 Why? It has another purpose, unlike regular tinder
This and the default of grabbing a new torch or bow from your inventory instead of the ones with lowest condition.
Pain so much pain. Why on earth are tinder plugs not the default tinder? They literally have zero other uses unlike birch bark.
The happy intro music with the "Death Is Always Waiting" got me 😂😂
I like that all the runs have different music but I missed the main song a bit (what is stupid because it is on my playlist) it is just very nice!
