Motown is a record label. They specialized in R&B/Soul/Funk area of music. Other record labels also did that, Atlantic was known for those genres. Earth, Wind and Fire were actually not a Motown group. They recorded for Columbia. There was a lot of good Soul and Funk music in the 70s. Listen to Sly and the Family Stone: Dance to the Music, Everyday People, Hot Fun in the Summertime.
This is the commenter to listen to! And this is a subject that you want to do your own research on! You can’t always depend on us to remember what happened this long ago! Motown is not a genre! And who sang lead always depended on what the song demanded, picking one special lead led to problems of jealousy in many cases. It was one of the first important black centric labels, owned and operated by Berry Gordy, but he wasn’t the only one! Chess and Atlantic were also great labels! The Spinners is still my favorite group! They tried Motown but Gordy was very strict about image and ruled with an iron fist! They had their own ideas and he didn’t like deviation from his ideas about creating stars. They went to Atlantic and finally achieved the stardom they deserved. Speaking of one lead singer question, there are a lot of movies that show the problems that led too. Dream Girls, Chess Records! When one person would start to become more famous than the others many groups broke up. The Supremes turned into Diana Ross and the Supremes and lost Barbara Martin, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson at different points in time because they were great singers but Berry Gordy thought Ross had more presence! That is just one example, the Temptations had many problems also, and there are many more. Motown had a huge catalogue, if you wanted to do it Gordy’s way!
This may be the greatest song ever written. It’s upbeat, so puts you in a good mood right away. It’s just about a performer, not a relationship, so if you’re in a bad place relationship-wise you won’t be put off. Got a great head-bopping groove if you’re driving down the road. And the music in the chorus … gives me chills (in a good way. Like ASMR for some folks.) I say this as a person who has always identified as a punk and metal fan.
great music is timeless. I grew up in the 70's and this was everywhere. I'm glad the younger generation has rediscovered it. and not just motown, but all the music from back then. let's face it...I doubt many of today's bands will remain as timeless
I'm not sure, but I think the Spinners represented the Philly soul sound, that was popular around that time. i.e. O'Jays , The Intruders , Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, etc.
Motown Monday, sounds like heaven. Spinners were such great voices. Backstabber, is worth a lisren. Motown has such a library they won't disappoint. Love the matching suits and dance moves. Smile..
@@TheDivayenta I'm hoping there won't be a Motown Monday until people who suggest songs determine if they were actually Motown artists. Required watching during my college years - Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Then on Sunday we'd listen to "The Firesign Theater Radio Hour Hour" on the radio. I still remember when they cut back to 30 minutes but didn't tell the stations in advance, so it went to dead air for a bit. The next week they started the show with an announcement that some stations were censoring the show and refusing to air the second half hour where they did their more mature and cutting edge material. At 30 minutes they mentioned what was coming up in the second half and went to the normal commercial break. No second half, and the radio station came on telling us that it wasn't them censoring the show.
Being from Detroit, and hearing so many of these songs as they came out, this is so good to have you doing Motown!! My Family is long since scattered to the four corners of this country, but we all have our Motown to connect us. Many, many years ago a bunch of us went to Las Vegas. At the time there was a Motown Cafe in the New York New York. Unfortunately the small chain is gone. We HAD to go eat there. We were singing along to all the songs, and didn't care who was watching us make fools of ourselves ! We are so blessed to have been born and raised in Detroit, and to have the Motown sound flowing through our souls !!
Back in the day, there were two late night weekend music shows... The Midnight Special and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. ANYTHING from The Midnight Special is going to be 1000% FIRE!!! Peace and Love!
These guys had a lot of hits. I had the pleasure of seeing them live back in the day, and they put on a fantastic show. They are one of those groups that can get up on stage and reel off song after song and you keep thinking, "Oh yeah, they did that one, too!" I would recommend "Then Came You", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "I'll Be Around", and "Games People Play". Those were all huge hits for The Spinners.
I was able to take my kids to see the Spinners at Epcot in Disney a couple of years ago. I knew their whole set. Their music takes me back to my childhood.
I’ll Be Around or Could It Be I’m Falling In Love for more great Spinners! Or the Ojays, Backstabbers, For The Love Of Money, Love Train, Time To Get Down.
This song is about a guy who makes incredible sounds with a rubber band stretched between his toes. The rubber band sound is simulated in the bassline.
I bought this 45 RPM single when I was in junior high school and I literally played it till the vinyl was turning to dust. That's how much I loved this song. Of course back then we didn't have the video to go with it but just the sound alone was enough to just make me play it over and over.
I think there’s a little (big) house in Detroit where the label “MOTOWN” began. There’s some good documentaries on it, worth watching. Muscle Shoul’s is another fascinating production story and a must watch!
Philippe "Soul" Wynne had one of the finest and most distinct voices in soul music. Unfortunately left us too early at age 43. Saw these guys live at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto back in 70's. Fantastic show.
So many hits from the spinners! One of my favorites, "Mighty Love." Motown Mondays and Female Fridays will carry you through the entire year of 2022 🤣👍 great choice and another great reaction 💕
The dancing and swag definitely made Motown. The performance was just as important as the music. I love watching Jordan bust his little Motown dance moves. We've all done it when talking about Motown 😆
I loved the Spinners! All my records with them are on Atlantic records, which was hugely committed to R&B. Two of my favorite Spinners tunes are from 1974: Then Came You (with Dionne Warwick) and Mighty Love.
Suggestions: Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing,’ Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You,’ Kool and The Gang - ‘Celebration,’ Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father,’ and last but not least ... Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.’
Philipe Wynne dude with glasses. Very outstanding vocalist and it’s good to see younger listeners hear his amazing talent.Check out “ Mighty Love” too.
If you want to watch a fabulous documentary about the musicians that Motown used to back all the bands, it's called Standing in the Shadows of Motown. I watched it two nights ago, right here on RUclips for free. The musicians were called The Funk Brothers.
The biggest Motown hit from the Spinners is “It’s A Shame”, which was written and produced by Stevie Wonder. That’s another great song you need to check out! 👌🏽🎶

The best part is you both appreciate every bit of it and are open minded to experience it all and soak it all in! I absolutely love you two and your reactions! Thanks for being you and thanks so much for sharing!!!
I heard the song when it was new in 1976 but because of Marvel's Avengers Infinity War ( the recorded version is played at the beginning of the movie ) my son is now in love with this song
Motown records was started in 1959 by Berry Gordy after having success writing for Jackie Wilson. In 1973 he moved it to Los Angeles and it lost it's impetus. The Spinners recorded a classic on Motown called It's a shame in 1970. The guitar riff has been much sampled. The Spinners incidentally were called The Detroit Spinners in the UK as there was a middle of the road folk group from Liverpool called The Spinners.
Listen to “Temptation’s Ball of Confusion”, every one in the group sings and the song fits today’s world situation as much as it did when it was recorded in the 70’s. Motown was started by Barry Gordy. You should also check out Stax records from Memphis and Atlantic records from NYC. These thee companies put out all that soul, R&B and funk during the 60s,70’s. Otis Redding was on Stax and many more. Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, and others on Atlantic…
In the 60's, as a teen, for me there was The Beatles, The Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones and.............ANYTHING MOTOWN. Everything Barry Gordy touched was gold!! Also, consider doing a Midnight Special series. That was one of the very few ways we got to see the acts live and it was a great show with Wolfman Jack, who btw was the piano player on Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime".
The 1970s, with the Beegees, Motown, Pointer Sisters, Rolling Stones, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, etc., was full of music that was so diverse. Great years.
Love anything Motown. Best documentaries are: “Hitsville: The Making of Motown” and the documentary about Motown house band, the fabulous Funk Brothers, “Standing in the Shadows of Motown”. If you like that genre these two docs are a must see.
Definitely do some Motown on female Fridays. Gladys Knight and the Pips. Dianna Ross and the Supremes and so many more. Great thing about growing up in the 60’s and 70’s they played every style of music on the same radio stations so we were exposed to it all.
I'm the ultimate Spinners fan. They had three lead singers: Philippe Wynne, Henry Fambrough and Bobby Smith. GC Cameron sang lead some in the very beginning. The group had 19 number one hits yet never won a Grammy. You should check out their episode of Unsung to find out more about the group. I have all their music and some song suggestions would be: Love Me or Leave Me Sadie Living Just A Little Laughing Just A Little As Long As We Have Love Its A Shame A Mighty Love How Did I Let You Get Away I'll Be Around I'll Keep Working My Way Back To You One Of A Kind(Love Affair) Then Came You
Every performer for Motown during the early days had to go through like "charm school" to learn how to walk, talk, dress, everything, so the Motown acts were always presented with a very polished, stage and television-ready look that really did a lot to get their music to a wider audience. Men were always in suits, women in stylish dresses or gowns, gloves. They had their own in-house song writers that were always competing to write the next hit, and the talent, so much amazing talent that couldn't get record deals anywhere else because of the color of their skin. Lots of amazing talent making great music presented in a nice clean-cut polished way was the perfect recipe for success. They broke down so many barriers throughout the entertainment industry and this country. It kept getting harder and harder to justify racist practices with "their music doesn't have wide appeal," when the music charts are littered with black Motown acts who are constantly getting requested for radio play, kids mimicking the dance moves, etc.
There's a documentary from 2019 called Hitsville: The Making of Motown. It goes into the history of the early days of Motown, and features interviews with Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson and others who started and were featured on the record label
The Rubberbands are iconic of the Spinners. It is their most popular song, and it is usually the last song of every concert. Out come the rubber bands, they do their act, then throw the rubber bands to fans in the audience. I have seen them 3 times in concert, and except for The Beatles, the Spinners are my favorite musical act.
I went to see them about 20 years ago and they stretched this song out to about 10 minutes . . . was great. IT IS A CRIME THAT THEY ARE NOT IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME.
This song always reminds me of the movie "Stripes" with Bill Murray when all the reject soldiers went to the topless bar to watch the women's mud wrestlers! They were playing this song! 😂❤️🎼✌️ And Motown was started by Barry Gordy in Detroit so black singers and bands could be heard! No other record label would sign them up!

If you watch their latest unpacking video, someone sent them a big coffee table book on Motown, really cool gift.
An all-time great song. And the Spinners were fantastic for like 5 decades.
So got to listen to Sly and the Family Stone. Sylvester Stewart was a genius.
Dance to the Music! Yes!
Hot Fun is my fav Family Stone vibe. Very progressive group for their time. Thanks Sly.
And of course, Stand!!
Like ASMR for some folks.)
I say this as a person who has always identified as a punk and metal fan.
Agreed. Easily one of the greatest songs ever.
I'll Be Around is a must for The Spinners.
great music is timeless. I grew up in the 70's and this was everywhere. I'm glad the younger generation has rediscovered it. and not just motown, but all the music from back then. let's face it...I doubt many of today's bands will remain as timeless
Side note: Earth Wind and Fire were never Motown. Motown were acts more like Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross.. etc.
I'm not sure, but I think the Spinners represented the Philly soul sound, that was popular around that time. i.e. O'Jays , The Intruders , Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, etc.
THE BLACKBYRDS "WALKING IN RHYTHM"..A TRUE SMOOTH SOUL GROOVE.
Motown Monday, sounds like heaven. Spinners were such great voices. Backstabber, is worth a lisren. Motown has such a library they won't disappoint. Love the matching suits and dance moves. Smile..
Listen to singing of this song at Daryl's House where Spinners are guest. Daryl Hall of Hall&Oats
The O’Jays did Backstabbers and they are at Daryl’s as well!
@@TheDivayenta The O'Jays are the Philly Sound
@@SaneBBinSF yes I know and I’m responding to the person who said the Spinners sang Backstabbers. They did not. It was the O’jays.
@@TheDivayenta I'm hoping there won't be a Motown Monday until people who suggest songs determine if they were actually Motown artists. If I had to suggest Motown artists, definitely Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Mary Wells, Smokey Robinson, and Brenda Holloway. Just a few of my many Motown favorites.
Wonderful music. Classy dressing. Clean pure vocals.
You have to listen to " Could it be I'm falling in love " Great song !!
They finally made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023; Henry Fambrough the founder member and last surviving original member died on Feb 7th 2024
Never missed an episode of the Midnight Special or
Don Kirshner's
Rock Concert
another great live music show from the 70s.
Rob squad the 70s Dominated the MIDNIGHT SPEACIAL It Aired from 1973 Till 1981
Loved all of those shows!
In Concert was another one from the same time period. Loved all three. I still have some cassette tapes I recorded off our tv back then.
Always watched midnight special....Wolfman Jack, awesome dj!
Their song "I'll Be Around" is one of my all time favorite songs. It moves me every time I hear it.
My mom was from Detroit. I raised in Southwest Louisiana on the Motown Sound.
I grew up just outside Pontiac, and, I remember WKNR and CKLW spinning the hits!
@@nebbindog6126 I don't remember WKNR, but I do remember CKLW. All of us kids, in the neighborhood, were too lazy and just called it CK. lol
Hey Detroit! Windsor here. We were spoiled rotten with good music!
Hey, hi from another Windsor fan of this channel!
Back in the day, there were two late night weekend music shows... The Midnight Special and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert. ANYTHING from The Midnight Special is going to be 1000% FIRE!!! Peace and Love!
Gotta listen to The Spinners “I’ll be Around”!
I saw them live in the 70's!!! Fantastic concerts!!! Enjoy this rabbit hole!!🎵🎼🎶🥁🎧🎸 Another vote for Motown Mondays!!!❤❤
"Then Came You" with Dionne Warwick!
Must include the Stylistics to the Motown reactions! Incredible vocals that will surely blow you guys away!
Stylistics were not Motown. They were the Philadelphia sound. But they were great.
I’ve told you before to check out Sam Cooke…you’ll both fall in love! “Another Saturday Night”. “You Send Me” …most perfect sweet voice!
Wonderful suggestion I am crazy for Sam
Yes!!!!
I've suggested him once. My favs are Wonderful World and Bring It On Home To Me.
Great Sam Cooke suggestions. But, if they're going to do him, they've GOT to do "Cupid" and "A Change Is Gonna Come".
I LOVED this song as a kid! It was my favorite song for a while. I used to sing this song to myself while delivering newspapers. 🤣
Welcome to the BEST music! My husband and I actually won a Motown trivia contest on a cruise once! 70s Motown can't be beat!
Great song! My favorite is Games People Play.
Yes, that was the sound of Philadelphia.
@@robertokokayi , exactly and not to be overlooked. Technically not Motown, but definitely worthy!
This song is about a guy who makes incredible sounds with a rubber band stretched between his toes. The rubber band sound is simulated in the bassline.
So, you love motown?
You should check out Smokey Robinson, either with the Miracles, or his solo stuff.
Tears of a Clown is a good one.
Yes SMOKEY
Crusein is my fav
Ooo Baby Baby, Bad Girl, tracks of my tears….Smokey and the Miracles fire!!!!
He’s gold
There is no bad Smokey song! Not one! Silky smooth!
Yes, it's the Motown Museum aka Hitsville. Still there. I'm from Detroit.
Motown Mondays!
Yes, there is an excellent documentary about Muscle Shoals studios. Its on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/5rW_KbniNqs/видео.html
Yep, sure is! I work a few blocks away from it.
@@pattiebraymanskelly954 Cool!
Philippe "Soul" Wynne had one of the finest and most distinct voices in soul music. Unfortunately left us too early at age 43. Saw these guys live at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto back in 70's. Fantastic show.
There cover of the four seasons "working my way back to you " is there best song imo ;)
Suggestions:
Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing,’
Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You,’
Kool and The Gang - ‘Celebration,’
Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father,’
and last but not least ...
Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.’
Philipe Wynne dude with glasses. Very outstanding vocalist and it’s good to see younger listeners hear his amazing talent.Check out “ Mighty Love” too.
Y’all should do “I’ll Be Around” by The Spinners, another great song by them
Hard to find a good live version. The studio version is the best I have heard!
If you want to watch a fabulous documentary about the musicians that Motown used to back all the bands, it's called Standing in the Shadows of Motown. I watched it two nights ago, right here on RUclips for free. The musicians were called The Funk Brothers.
Great documentary. The spinners were in Philadelphia and had no connection to Motown.
Don't neglect the Philly sound, every bit as good as Motown.
The Spinners originally were on Motown, but the bulk of the Spinners’ hit records part of the Philly Soul genre.
The biggest Motown hit from the Spinners is “It’s A Shame”, which was written and produced by Stevie Wonder. That’s another great song you need to check out! 👌🏽🎶
Y’all are so awesome!!! Do you realize you are traveling through history?? Really you are traveling through the music history of the great old U.S.A.! The best part is you both appreciate every bit of it and are open minded to experience it all and soak it all in! I absolutely love you two and your reactions! Thanks for being you and thanks so much for sharing!!!
I love Motown! How about a weekly reaction? I vote for Motown Monday!
We went to a Spinners concert a couple years ago and everyone went crazy when they did “Rubberband Man”. It was a lot of fun!
The Spinners were absolutely amazing!!! SO many great anthems!!
Love anything Motown. Best documentaries are: “Hitsville: The Making of Motown” and the documentary about Motown house band, the fabulous Funk Brothers, “Standing in the Shadows of Motown”. If you like that genre these two docs are a must see.
You can't help but smile when that chorus starts.
Definitely do some Motown on female Fridays. Gladys Knight and the Pips. Dianna Ross and the Supremes and so many more. Great thing about growing up in the 60’s and 70’s they played every style of music on the same radio stations so we were exposed to it all.
Motown was pure fun and dancing routines and this is one of my favorite tunes! Can’t stop dancing to this one!
I live the spinners.but just found out that ABBA is releasing a new album.the first one in 40 years.absolutly excited 😍
Both new songs are amazing! Goosebumps!
I heard they'll be using avatars of their younger selves for concerts, rather than actual live performance.
The OJ's have a hit with. LOVE TRAIN. Home free does a cover, Incredible job.
I have all their music and some song suggestions would be:
Love Me or Leave Me
Sadie
Living Just A Little Laughing Just A Little
As Long As We Have Love
Its A Shame
A Mighty Love
How Did I Let You Get Away
I'll Be Around
I'll Keep Working My Way Back To You
One Of A Kind(Love Affair)
Then Came You
As a resident of "Motown:" you have a huge selection of artists to check out.My favorite was Smokey and the Four Tops.Love it
Request: Chicago - Hard to say I'm sorry/Getaway. The combo is key.
Loved dancing to the Spinners back then.
My recommendation for Motown is You Make Me Feel Brand New by The Stylistics. Beautiful song with beautiful voices.
Not Motown tho.
TSOP....The Sound Of Philadelphia. Similar to Motown, but not connected in any way.
The Stylistics were not Motown. That was the sound of Philadelphia.
Motown Mondays!!!!!!! Al Green Lets stay together. Smokey Robinson Cruising. ✌❤
Smokey " You Really Got a Hold on Me"
I totally agree…both kick ass songs
Huey Lewis does a fantastic version of cruising as a duet
I went to see them about 20 years ago and they stretched this song out to about 10 minutes . . . was great. IT IS A CRIME THAT THEY ARE NOT IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME.
This song always reminds me of the movie "Stripes" with Bill Murray when all the reject soldiers went to the topless bar to watch the women's mud wrestlers! They were playing this song! 😂❤️🎼✌️ And Motown was started by Barry Gordy in Detroit so black singers and bands could be heard! No other record label would sign them up!
He should have been given the medal of peace or freedom decorated by the president for his contribution.
Y’all took me back to being like 5 years old. Thanks guys! It’s so much fun hanging out with with you listening to some great music.✌️😊
