Michael Jackson was just a few months younger than me, so I was in awe at the talent of the Jackson 5, and Stevie, the master, and so many more like Marvin, Supremes. It was a great time for music!
Have you guys listened to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, "If you don't know me by now," featuring the late great Teddy Pendergrass on lead vocal before he went solo? It is a classic.
Not all R&B groups were associated with Motown. I am from Detroit and this drives me crazy. The Spinners did have one Motown hit, "It's a Shame". "Working my Way Back to You" was put out by Atlantic. Manhattans "Kiss and Say Goodbye" was Columbia.
Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, the story of The Funk Brothers, is well worth the watch. They played on more hit records than The Beatles, Stones and Creedence combined.
An amazing part of the Motown Records story is that the majority of Motown hits were produced in a converted two-car garage on the back of a house in Detroit. The control room was originally the kitchen. They used the attic as the reverb chamber. They used a three-track machine. They had the greatest songwriters, session musicians, vocalists, and producers.
Motown ruled the airways in the early and mid sixties, along with The Beachboys, before the British Invasion took over. The Four Tops were one of the biggies and this was one of the BIGGEST HITS in the genre. More Motown please.
@@vinnygi okay…..having lived through it, I guess I remember listening to the albums circa 1963/64 and yeah…continuing for several years….with the British groups eventually taking over. Memories can be incorrect of course. I’m sure you’ve probably checked the actual release dates.
@@helenespaulding7562 I should have mentioned that Motown does pre-date the British Invasion by a few years, but I brought it up because it makes Motown’s success even more impressive. They went head to head with the British Invasion and held their own.
Except that is has kind of a sad ending for a lot of them. I remember the one part where the one of the guys is telling a story about how he was in a bar and My Girl came on and he told someone he was the one who played the hook, and they didn't believe him. One of the most memorable hooks of all time, and because The Funk Brothers were overshadowed by the singers they can't get the credit they deserve.
Great call!!! I was going to go there!! That documentary is very informative and the music is incredible!! To think that most people had no idea at all!!!!
@@taninhawk Robert White (RIP) was the person who played tbe pentatonic hook which opens the song. He was part of the "oreo cookie" guitar section: Robert White, Joe Messina & Eddie Willis. Funky licks Eddie is passed too. As far as I know, Joe is still alive in his 90s.
Y'all are gonna go down the Four Tops rabbit hole - this is one of my all-time favorite songs! Can't beat the Temps (Temptations) and the Tops (Four Tops) 😉
I have a memory connected to my youth and "Baby I Need Your Loving" .... It was at Madison Square Gardem. We were sitting in the first row and, being a fan of the group, I was singing along with them. When they started to sing "Baby I Need Your Loving" after a little while the lead singer made his way down from the stage and came to the audience. I was shocked when he came straight to me and stuck the microphone in front of my mouth! 🎵🎤🎶 What could I do ... I just kept on singing! Afterwards he went back to the stage, and I was mystified, trying to figure out what had just happened.
The Temptations, The 4 Tops, The Spinners, Diana Ross and the Supremes. My god the list goes on and on. Like I said you should do Motown Mondays. There is soooo much amazing music out of Motown. ✌❤
I grew up listening to a lot of Motown. That happens when the only decent radio station within listening range is in Detroit (AM station CKLW to be exact - transmitter was actually across the river in Windsor, Ontario). Motown was named after the city of Detroit, known also as the ‘Motor City’, due to the large concentration of car manufacturers there. The original headquarters was a modest little house in Detroit which has since been turned into a tourist attraction. I’ve mentioned this before, but there was an excellent documentary on Motown that came out a couple of years ago. Highly recommended. And please react to “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by The Temptations. Kind of a more mellow vibe, but one of the most unique and intriguing tracks ever released on the label. Always gave me chills whenever it played on the radio.
"C-K-L-W -- The Motor City" If you grew up with that station, you just heard the jingle in your head, as you read that. "The Big 8" 800 on your AM dial, and the station was in Windsor, not just the transmitter. They did play to the Detroit market, though, and at night, when the transmitter pattern changed, the signal would power its way, hundreds of miles into the US. The history of the station is chronicled in the documentary, "The Rise and Fall of The Big 8", worth watching.
@@ErnieB I have seen the CKLW doc. Amazing history lesson. I didn’t realize it when listening as a kid just how influential that station was to all the other radio stations in North America. I was listening to greatness and didn’t even know it!
Please review Bernadette!!! You will love it. I am a 68 yr. Old white girl that loves motown!!! Brings back memories of my teenage yrs, how did I get so old????
Absolutely unmissable, I agree, though IIRC, not Motown (?)... Under the Boardwalk, Up on the Roof, On Broadway, This Magic Moment, Saturday Night at the Movies, Save the last Dance for Me and so many others. :-) I have to confess, I do slightly prefer the Rolling Stones cover of Under the Boardwalk, but maybe that's just because I heard it first as a teenager and it kind of stuck in my heart... Maybe our reactors could do a comparison?
I’m a teacher, too. MASSIVE props to Jay for doing this every day during coaching. I know you bring so much positive energy to those boys you coach, then you come home and bring thousands of us so much joy. Love y’all so much!!!
What a bass line. Motown was a sound that moved American music. That soul/gospel really affected English music too. All the best rockers listened to this music. Detroit, yes.....then LA.
I am English and 62 years old and grew up with Motown. Berry Gordy ran the company tight..... It was as sound that transcends the ages from the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Jacksons, Smokey Robinson and many many more. All superstars with songs by Holland/Dozier/Holland. The music lives on the memories never fade. Legendary music. Apreciate and love it guys.
Motown is forever! Four Tops Temptations, Jackson 5, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. Sounds as fresh today as nearly 60 years ago.
Berry Gordy at Hitsville had a conveyor belt of great groups, singers, songwriters, and of course the backing band, The Soul Funk Brothers in the Snakepit . Tamla Motown was the music we all danced too in The UK for a couple of decades at least. Very happy days.
Motown!!! Yes! Detroit! Woo-Hoo! Four Tops, over the top! Playing our 45's, dancing, singing along....takes me waaayy back, stupid smile on my face, More Motown Music, hells Yah!
I agree Motown has some of the great music all times but y'all need to investigate the Philadelphia experience The Stylistics The O'Jays The Delfonics great music
I have a memory connected to this song.it was summer 1967 outside my girlfriend's house-sitting on the front step. Her front door was open with her dad's hifi playing top 40 radio. This came on.The memory is very distinct. That is the highest form of compliment. This is a high point of that decade's music.
✌Levi Stubbs! What a voice! I read were early in Motown Levi complained to owner Barry Gordy that they were making him sing in a key that was difficult. Barry told him "But yeah Levi. The ladies dig that cry in your voice!". Decisions like that are what made Motown so great. This was always one of my favs to sing in my band back in the day. Its a workout! As someone mentioned. Levi never left the Four Tops. If not mistaken two were his cousins and one was a close friend. You can tell just by looking at him how down to earth he was. Kindness radiates from him. RIP Levi. One of the greats!
Grew up in Detriot in the 60's. The talent was unreal. You should really explore more Motown, every person in every group was crazy good. Aretha, Smokey, 4 tops, Diana, Otis, Jackson 5, Miracles on and on.........
While Aretha Franklin was from Detroit, she never recorded for Motown and her sound was not the Motown sound. She first recorded on Columbia Records label, a NYC company then recorded for Atlantic Records, also a NYC company. Many of her biggest hits were recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. When she left Atlantic, she moved to Arista Records, another NYC company. Now if the Otis you were referring to is Otis Redding, he also had nothing to do with Detroit nor Motown Records. Otis recorded for Stax Records, a Memphis, TN. company.
I was born in 1961 and raised just north of Detroit. We lived for Motown music. There was nothing better. My friends and I would sit under a tree during recess with a transistor radio listening for all the latest Motown releases. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Four Tops, Temptations, Martha Reeves, Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Jackson 5, Commodores and yes even Parliament Funkadelic and so many more. AMAZING catalog of greatness.
I’m sorry but I’ve gotta say. I feel so sorry for people of your generation. Who don’t know about Mo-Town. So much beautiful and powerful music. That came out of that glorious building. I guess better late than never. Guys even if you don’t react to it. Do yourselves a favor and jump that rabbit hole of peace, love and understanding 😎🙏❤️
Motown will be in the hearts for life from generations to generations for they lay that foundation. Because of them and all the artists. Is why you are able to see and hear and tell the younger generations. Keep living and keep the faith believeth hope and hold your head up and stay strong for everything is going to be alright.
Motown had songwriters, arrangers, costume designers, choreographers, back-up bands and even "charm school". Anyone who was blessed enough to be signed by Motown, was on their way to solid-gold stardom.
Motown Records is still very much a going concern, although now as a part of the Universal Music Group. Founder Berry Gordy was CEO until he retired a couple of years ago at age 90. Motown is a nickname for Detroit where the label was founded. The US auto industry was based in Detroit, and the nickname Motown is short for Motor-Town.
Though I'm Mexican and grew up listening to Mexican music, when I was like 8 years old living in Mexico City I started to love the Beatles and the Stones, meanwhile I was listening to all kinds of music and I came across this song, this encapsulates my childhood perfectly, now at 64 years old I cry every time with this song,...alone in my private place, great.
This song came out in 1966 love the four tops. I listen to them growing up and till this day. This song was played in the movie Cooley high which came out in 1975. You should watch it it’s a great movie and when this song plays in the movie your gonna cry. Great movie must see! 😊
So, so thankful for all the amazing music that I have experienced growing up and throughout my life. Motown was part of that and it is still in my soul now. Heaven here on earth. ❤
"Bernadette" my favorite Four Tops song. You still haven't done anything by your fellow Tulsanians The Gap Band. Born and raised in Tulsa The Wilson Brothers they named their band, Gap in remembrance of the Tulsa race massacre. Named after the streets Greenwood, Archer and Pine. They were a R&B/Disco/Funk etc band from 67 to 2010. "Party Train" "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" "Early In The Morning" and the list goes on. Can't figure out why you won't give them a listen.
@@wandalevy470 Wanda! You still love Bernadette! Baby we're old, but we're not supposed to forget what we love! LoL, no seriously, the vodka does wonders! Love you Miss Wanda!
You haven't even scratched the surface of Motown. The Four Tops had some of the greatest songs in that era. People still sing their songs today...especially someone like me who loved these guys. Check Out The Temptations also...another great group..."Treat Her Like A Lady", "Ball Of Confusion", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "Hey Girl" and many more!
TOPS and TEMPS! There used to be an oldies show on Monday nights on a local radio station here called "Tops and Temps" where they mostly played Four Tops songs and Temptations songs with other Motown hits sprinkled throughout
This reaction was enjoyed and liked! First off, you are correct about Bruno Mars, he brought old school into new school. He is a great artist! "Reach Out" is one of my top 3 Motown songs. It was written by songwriting team H-D-H, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. Unfortunately, Levi Stubbs, the lead singer, passed more than a decade ago. Abdul "Duke" Fakir is the last surviving member of the Four Tops. Have you listened carefully to the musical arrangement? The Funk Brothers (see movie: "Standing in the Shadows of Motown") were the band for Motown. They made millions of dollars worth of music but were only paid scale for their work. They were jazz musicians, not rock'n'rollers, which is why the musicianship is so high and the arrangements are so tight. The chorus without lyrics begins the song and then the verse comes in. This song is in a major key but starts out on a minor chord. It's the major sixth substitution chord pivoting into the verse and a diminished chord pulling into the chorus that gives this song its freshness. Listen to the bassline played by James Jamerson (RIP). Only one finger played all those notes on the Fender Precision Bass, which he called "The Funk Machine." He was a genius! There were usually two drummers, probably Uriel Jones & Richard "Pistol" Allen, both passed. Benny "Papa Zita" Benjamin (drummer who originated the Motown "sound") was most likely already passed by this time and the wood "block footsteps" at the beginning was Jack Ashford on percussion. He is still very much alive well into his eighties. So my other two top Motown songs are: "You Keep Me Hanging On," also written by H-D-H, sung by The Supremes, and the final one is "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted?" sung by Jimmy Ruffin (brother of Temptations' David Ruffin), lyrics by William Weatherspoon & James Dean, music by Paul Riser (a Funk Brother musical arranger and trombonist, originally hired to write Motown artists' compositions into musical notation for those that could not do it themselves). Regards, Chuck
bartonone2005, Reading this comment made my night! I loved and have been binging SITSOM for the past month and a half! My favorites are Bernadette, Ain't Too Proud to Beg, and What Becomes of the Brokenhearted. I love the instrumental of You Keep Me Hanging On. I love reading comments about The Funk Brothers, I wish they all could have received their propers sooner, but I'm glad they got them!
I was going through top songs of 70s, month to month. While I lived in that era, I was struck by how soul/Motown music really dominated early 70s and it was all so good!
Can’t believe you guys have never heard this… the Motown formula was to get you hooked within the first 10 seconds and this song is no different. True classic! My mom loved her some Motown and turned me onto all of it.
Motown was created in Detroit the motor town of America. Hence Moto(r)town. Motown has such unique sound. My understanding they entertained on sidewalks downtown Detroit, created that sound harmony & dancing. I am pushing 70, even though into classic country all my life, this is good music.
I saw on one of your unboxing shows that you received a DVD called "In the Shadow of Motown". Please play for us, I have seen it and found it so informative - especially for us that were great Motown fans!

We are hoping to get to watch more and read more of all the awesome books and dvds we got when Jay gets out of basketball season and really expand our knowledge. I’m currently looking over the Motown book now and this genre is full of so much soul
And we gotta give a big shout out to those guys that give that unmistakable "Motown Sound" even from Motown's beginning until after they moved out to L.A. Let's hear it for the FUNK BROTHERS!!!!!!!!
Love how you recognise the passion and feeling in Levi Stubbs voice, he does it on every song he sings, I'd say he doesn't sing the song he IS the song! Great reaction video too, maybe look at Levi and the Tops sing Ask the Lonely?
That's before the Spinners became a '70s Philly soul band, signed to Atlantic and working at Sigma Sound Studios in Philly with the great Thom Bell and having hit after hit in the '70s. Before they went Philadelphia, they were Detroit. "It's a Shame" was their only hit for Motown, and it wasn't even on Motown Records per se; it was on Berry Gordy's V.I.P. label, which, contrary to the name, was sort of Motown's farm team. The Spinners were low priority in the Motown universe, which is why they left for greener pastures with Atlantic Records and became one of the biggest soul groups of the '70s.
This song has So many groovy cool hooks built into the sound structure. From the flute to the driving horse themed drums, voice harmonies...etc. etc. etc.
You MUST listen to The Supremes, best girl group of all, queens of Motown. My favorite of their many, many songs is My World Is Empty Without You. The Temptations (Just My Imagination Running Away With Me is my fave) and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (Would I Love You is my favorite, but Shop Around is a better starting place) are other Motown heavyweights you have to hear!!
The Tops ! All these years later I still tear up with fondness. Thanks Guys. All Motown was the same band. The amazing & only, FUNK BROTHERS .Always steady as a Detroit engine ! They literally plead there way thru the song !!!!!!
Motown is ICONIC, LEGENDARY ! Music would be so different without Motown. You definitely need to react to these two tunes that are equally iconic : I Heard it Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
Wow! My fav Motown male group followed by the Temptations! Never get tired listening to this iconic song. Every time I hear it , I'm hugely mesmerized. Like crazily also The Jackson's cover with Michael''s solo rendition. Their version is a little bit slower but also a treat
I think The Temptations “My Girl” would be a great choice after this song. It has such a winning sound - you can’t help but feel happy listening to it.

My favorite motown song is the spinner's "working my way back to you" and the Manhattan's "kiss and say goodbye". They are excellent.
Spinners were with Motown briefly but most of their hits were on Atlantic Records. The Manhattans were on Columbia Records
Sorry, I just enjoyed the music, didn't dig in to who made it as far as record labels
@@scm021374 I Understand.
Lol I just had the melody to working my way stuck in my head but couldn't remember the words or the title. Thanks!
Do not underestimate the influence of Motown!! They owned major airwaves in the 60s, 70s and beyond!
Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, the story of The Funk Brothers, is well worth the watch. They played on more hit records than The Beatles, Stones and Creedence combined.
I Love this channel seeing the reactions of my Generation's Music....
Actually, Motown’s greatest success came during the British Invasion.
@@vinnygi Yep. And not only did they hold their own with the British Invasion, but both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones covered Motown songs.
The musician's on this are THE FUNK BROTHERS.If u want too learn about Motown u have to watch the documentary Standing in the shadows of Motown.
Amen. To understand the Motown sound, one must learn about the Funk Brothers.
Can't beat the Temps (Temptations) and the Tops (Four Tops) 😉
ruclips.net/video/3_pJItOS0Uc/видео.html on the same stage. That was Motown magic!
The Four Tops were HUGE. Every song they made was a hit. The Best 60's music came out of Motown.
“Baby, I Need Your Loving” is another great one of theirs. There are so many great Motown songs that you could do a regular Motown Monday feature.
Motown Mondays! YES!!!
And please if you choose any Temptations songs. Choose those from the 60s. These are the guys that helped put Motown on the map.
Yes! Motown Mondays! You'll never run out of great music!!
Have to review The Dramatics What You See, Is What You Get or Be My Girl
@@casey4602 I love the Dramatics "In the Rain." Lots of memories!!!!
@Maya Nightwolf you’re welcome. I grew up in southwestern Ontario, so I was lucky enough to be able to pick it up 24/7.
Loved CKLW!! Grew up in East Detroit and then moved to the west side. CKLW out of Windsor, Ontario.
Levi Stubbs had the best voice that ever came out of Motown!
David Ruffin imo or Marvin but Levi had the power
@@jibsmokestack1definitely David
Soul-music at is best from Four Tops and Motown A smash hit for all time! Thanks for all the music!
"Bernadette" is their most passionate song (imho). Hope you'll check it out. These guys bring back lots of good memories.
James Jamerson's bass part on this recording is a masterpiece. I seem to remember there is an "isolated track" of it on RUclips.
YES! Bernadette!!!
I love their version of "If I Were A Carpenter". I know it's been covered a lot, but I love their version!
Please review Bernadette!!! You will love it. I am a 68 yr. Old white girl that loves motown!!! Brings back memories of my teenage yrs, how did I get so old????
Top tune 😊
Don’t miss The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk and more.
Yes!!!!!
Absolutely unmissable, I agree, though IIRC, not Motown (?)... Under the Boardwalk, Up on the Roof, On Broadway, This Magic Moment, Saturday Night at the Movies, Save the last Dance for Me and so many others. :-)
I have to confess, I do slightly prefer the Rolling Stones cover of Under the Boardwalk, but maybe that's just because I heard it first as a teenager and it kind of stuck in my heart... Maybe our reactors could do a comparison?
I’m a teacher, too. MASSIVE props to Jay for doing this every day during coaching. I know you bring so much positive energy to those boys you coach, then you come home and bring thousands of us so much joy. Love y’all so much!!!
Kudos to you for being a teacher as well. Hope this school year is treating you right
Temptations, Smoky Robinson and the Miracles, Supremes, any song…
Motown is definitely still a thing. It is one genre of music that I believe will never die. There is just so much to dig into......
These guy's were fantasitic, I remember the days.
What a bass line. Motown was a sound that moved American music. That soul/gospel really affected English music too. All the best rockers listened to this music. Detroit, yes.....then LA.
The Funk Brothers were the Motown sound
k41gator - The "t" in Motown is lower case. That's the late James Jamerson on bass guitar.
Great group. x
I agree Motown has some of the great music all times but y'all need to investigate the Philadelphia experience The Stylistics The O'Jays The Delfonics great music
The Dramatics are so underrated. My favorite is What You See, Is What You Get and Be My Girl.
YES !!! - The Delfonics !!!
I have a memory connected to this song.it was summer 1967 outside my girlfriend's house-sitting on the front step. Her front door was open with her dad's hifi playing top 40 radio. This came on.The memory is very distinct. That is the highest form of compliment. This is a high point of that decade's music.
Great song and group. So many great genres during this time.
"that cry in your voice", is a great way to describe it. Levi, one of a kind!
@@CourtneyEvans He sure was! Not to mention the brilliance of Gordy to force him to sing that way. Just on the edge of his range.
Friend of the Muse - His name is Berry, not Barry...Mr. Berry Gordy Jr.
My bad! Thanks for the correction. I know better. I'm old and stoned.@@Nomad-vv1gk
Ahhh... Music. Harmony. Talent...
God bless Motown Sound, Soul, R&B 🙏🏻.
This is a timeless classic! I've always loved this song

❤ No words. Four Tops. That’s it.
You need to listen to Bernadette. It’s incredible.
The words of Bernadette
are the most profound of all
the Motown songs.
Motown will be in the hearts for life from generations to generations for they lay that foundation. Because of them and all the artists. Is why you are able to see and hear and tell the younger generations. Keep living and keep the faith believeth hope and hold your head up and stay strong for everything is going to be alright.
Motown is everything, forevermore. Crosse's
All generations, all colors of peeps...I will
Forever love that music....
Levi Stubbs , one of the best soul voices of all time, loved " when she was my girl, worth a listen
I feel you and can relate :)
One of the greatest songs ever! Go down the Motown rabbit hole because you will NOT regret it.
The Four Tops are the greatest vocal group we've ever had!!
Four part harmony is an excellent form of music, with each voice making a wonderful whole.
Can't forget the Andantes who do the female backgrounds!
Love you guys appreciating some classics of my life !!! - now 72 years old - keep them coming !!!
The four tops are special, they’re sing with passion they are ... really GREAT.

Four Tops and all Motown needs to be heard by all age groups, it was such a great era
You should do a Motown Monday to go along with your Female Fridays.
Totally!!!! Totally.
I agree wholeheartedly..... and Stax Saturday.
Correction: Benny Benjamin was still alive during this time as he didn’t pass until 1969. This was recorded in late 1965.
I was going through top songs of 70s, month to month. While I lived in that era, I was struck by how soul/Motown music really dominated early 70s and it was all so good!
One of the most beautiful recordings of my youth' experience ~ absolutely haunting flute melody.
Can’t believe you guys have never heard this… the Motown formula was to get you hooked within the first 10 seconds and this song is no different. True classic! My mom loved her some Motown and turned me onto all of it.
This song ALWAYS gives me the chills... such an amazing group!! Sadly Mowtown is no longer around.
This is from a time when "entertainers" dominated! Still gives me goosebumps some 50 + years later.
Yes! That would be a fun one to watch with you guys.

For some mind blowing vocals, check out “It’s a Shame” by the Spinners.
