- The BMW E30 FINA BASTOS M3 might be one of the most iconic racing cars in the world. In 1992, three drivers, Jean-Michel Martin, Christian Danner, and Steve Soper, drove the motorsport icon at the Spa 24 h race.
The three drivers pushed the E30 M3 through some of the most intense racing of the year amidst a mixture of scorching heat, challenging rain storms and even a collision in the race. Against all odds, the Bastos liveried BMW crossed the line in 1st place just 0.48 seconds ahead of the 2nd place car. The driver: Steve Soper.
32 years later, in 2024, the E30 Bastos M3 is back as a re-born tribute. John Marcar joined its owners, Toby Partridge of Partridge BMW and the man himself, Mr Steve Soper, at Silverstone to join them for a day of testing.
Written, produced and presented by John Marcar in partnership with Partridge BMW
Filmed by Richard Fullbrook and Henry Faulkner-Smith
Final Edit by Luke Wilson
Great to see Steve again. He was fantastic when he came out here to Australia running in the Bathurst races and then also onto New Zealand. In actual fact when the Aussie commentators spoke of Steve during the 1987 Bathurst, they reckon he looked only 19!!
Met Steve quiet. a few times when I used to take my M3 into Sopers Lincoln years ago.
Me working in F1 at the time we used to have a few chats about what was going on in the sport, really nice chap.
Pretty damn cool! And Mr Soper, what a guy! 👏👌🙌
Such a great video. Curious how he navigated that highly charged home situation to leave for the race. A champion of negotiation as well, no doubt
Also kudos for knowing Chris Boardman the iconic bike racer/builder
