Curtis is the pride of Boise, Idaho. Born in LA, CA but growing up in Boise, Stigers studied music in school and spent a year away at college on a jazz scholarship but found he was better suited to an education gained by playing in bars and clubs, with bands running the stylistic gamut from punk-rock (as a drummer) to blues and soul (as a saxophonist) to jazz, most notably at the Tuesday night jam-sessions run by the unlikely Idaho-transplant Gene Harris, a legendary and influential pianist best known for his many recordings on Blue Note Records. In 1987, 21-year-old Curtis Stigers relocated from Boise to New York City in search of new challenges and a shot at the big-time, whatever that meant. “I just knew I needed to get out of town to continue to learn and grow as a musician,” he says. Stigers broke into the NYC live music scene playing the blues clubs in Greenwich Village, first as a saxophonist and eventually as a singer and burgeoning songwriter. After a few years on the scene, Stigers was spotted by several A&R execs while playing a Sunday night jazz gig at an Upper West Side restaurant, where he and his trio experimented with playing jazz versions of songs by modern songwriters like Elvis Costello, Tom Waits and Donald Fagen, in addition to jazz standards and Curtis’ own pop-soul originals. He eventually signed a deal with Clive Davis and Arista Records and set out to write the rest of the songs for his first album with several collaborators, including Glen Ballard and Barry Mann.
Lousy marketing for his follow-up album. The music landscape was changing, and he defied one single category so some radio stations wouldn't play him. I worked in music retail for 30 years. I'm a saxophonist and musicologist. If you're still a fan, he still has plenty music you can purchase and listen to.
Wow! I forgot about Curtis Stigers and this song. Brings back memories of early 90's. Thanks for reacting to it. Curtis was a very underrated artist. He has a voice and can blow that sax!
Two gems from Curtis are "Never Saw a Miracle" and the theme to Sons of Anarchy. I love the theme so looked up some years ago, who sang it. When I researched his music, "Never Saw a Miracle" and "I Wonder Why" took me back to when the songs were hits. Always nice to get re-acquainted with a great voice.
Wow, you actually found a song that I haven't heard in decades! I just looked it up. He was a one-hit wonder in the USA. This song peaked at #9 in 1991.
When I saw the song and singer name, I wasn't familiar with it. But as soon as the video started, I surely remember this song. These blasts from the past are fun.
I continue to campaign to get Natalie Merchant on your channel. Her entire Tigerlily album was a tour de force, but you should start with "Wonder". Her voice is as sultry as Stevie Nicks. She writes music and lyrics and performs. I would listen to her read bus departure schedules.
I put in a suggestion for Natalie Merchant yesterday. I still find it hard to believe she hasn't been featured on Female Friday! Her song Wonder always brings tears of joy, what a positive message for all people born with disabilities.
I revisited Natalie Merchant on VH1 Storytellers, her introduction to What's The Matter Here is incredible. It's a tough subject matter, but we can't keep our eyes blinded to it.
I was thumbing through all your reactions yesterday . One band I didn't see was "Big Country". They were kind of a one hit wonder here in the States. Big Country-the band Big Country- is also the name of the song to check out. Since you guys like songs that repeat the names of performers. Check it out , you can't help but get swept away once the pipes start
Big Country is one of my favorite bands. One thing - the name of the song is "In A Big Country". They have so many great songs, but this is the one to start with for sure.
I agree. I'm a saxophonist and was an instant fan when this album was released. It was I heavy rotation in my music store. He has released numerous albums following his debut, but the sound and market of radio changed as did the music business. New artists didn't get label support and radio station formats and programming changed, too. Unfortunately he fell victim to it. However, he has persevered and has released several great albums you may have never known about. So, if you love his sound go to his website.
@curtisstigers I was reminded how great of a musician you are. I didn't realize the guitar was a part of your arsenal! I play saxophone but could never play guitar. Thanks to watching reactions of young people listening to great music of our time. It's refreshing to see. I knew you were still out there, but I needed a reminder. It was a treat to hear you performing my favorite composer, Gershwin. "Summertime" no less! Thank you, stay well! 🙏🙏
Damn, I had almost forgotten this one. Great song, incredible vocals. Awesome song. And speaking of Billy Joel I think It's time to revisit him. Try New York State Of Mind please.
I'm so happy that finally someone has reacted to the multi talented Curtis Stigers ❤❤❤ as soon as I heard his first hit, I went searching four his album and wow !!! I fell in love with his voice ❤ my favourite tracks from the album are '' never saw a miracle '' and '' the man your gonna fall in love with '' I played this album non stop for about 6 months lol !! He sings songs from sons of anarchy and other shows ❤❤❤ from a very happy UK subscriber ❤
I didn’t recognize this song for a minute. I have to add it to my library. Curtis and the Forest Rangers “John the Revelator” is a song I have played on repeatedly on repeat. I can’t listen just once.
Stigers was also featured on that stratospheric soundtrack for _The Bodyguard_ , singing Elvis Costello's _(What's So Funny) 'Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding_ (another song you should check out). Yeah, this song was huge; I wish he'd been allowed more commercial success after his explosive debut. This reaction was totally spot-on.
Amber and Jay, are you familiar with Michael Franks? He had a song called “Secret’s Safe With Me”, mid-1980s, very jazzy track. If I could describe it, I would say imagine Steely Dan and John Mayer combined. Very smooth pop song, but very good. I think you both would like it.
I love this song - takes me back to my teens in the 90s. Curtis is a huge name in the UK and European Jazz scene these days - check out "I only Wanna Be with You" absolutely beautiful.
Another new artist you should consider adding is Walk Off The Earth! A great place to start, one Female Friday, is "Hello" featuring Myles and Isaac! You will love this most creative and talented band, I am sure!!
Oh my!! I haven't heard this since my teenage years! Oh my goodness! Still sounds good! The sax in the beginning reminds me of Kenny G. Y'all remember him Rob Squad Family? If someone is in to instrumental, Kenny G was the man. "Songbird", " Sentimental", "By The Time This Night Is Over" with Kenny G on sax and Peabo Britain's vocals, and "Even If My Heart Would Break" with Kenny G on sax and Aaron Neville on vocals. All good stuff!
Off the same record with the song "Never Saw A Miracle" and is why I bought the cassette way back in 1991. Over the years his choice of styles had gone from one thing to the next and I don't believe he ever had the same commercial success. It's strange that I'm seeing this video now. Last week I heard "Never Saw A Miracle" being played outside from where I work. I couldn't remember the name, or who sang it, but I was certain I had once owned the tape. I could remember the lyrics as I listened to it but, for the life of me, I just could not recall the artist or the title of the song. I went online when I got home and did an internet search and immediately recognized once having owned the tape. Then I started digging through my old cassettes in my closet and right at the bottom of the stack I found this very one. Been playing it over and over all week since. Just love the raspy and soulful voice combined with the saxophone.
I saw him at Madison Square Garden opening up for James Brown. I also saw him earlier on the day of this concert, getting his hair done a a salon in Manhattan. I went in the salon and spoke to him. I told him that I was going to the concert later that day. He was very nice and approachable
THANK YOU! I had forgotten all about this artist! I had such a huge crush on him via this video! Man - I really miss the good old days of VH1 and MTV. When everyone put out amazing videos and it was all about the music. ❤
This song is on one of the best albums ever. Curtis is a fantastic musician accompanied by some of the best musicians in the game. Some Toto members as well.
Jay and Amber - Just found your channel and I’m hooked! You are such an impressive example of young adults willing to wish others well and are so sincere. I’m an old retired guy and I LOVE seeing the reactions of the younger generations to the music that has meant so much to me personally as well as so many others! I have not seen any videos featuring one of the best performers I have ever seen live. Lets get some Jonny Lang!!!
While Nick Lowe has had a successful music career, Curtis Stigers is the reason Nick is so wealthy today. Nick wrote the classic song "(What's So Funny' Bout) Peace Love & Understanding". Curtis covered the song, and that cover was included on the soundtrack to the Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner film "The Bodyguard". That soundtrack sold millions, on the strength of Whitney's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You". The royalties Nick received from that song allowed him to live comfortably and record the music he wanted to make instead of what the record companies were expecting from him.

I went and dug it out of a box when you said that about the cassette. LOVE IT still. Always makes my chest hurt. I started buying CD's in 1990 and this song came out in 91. Not all new release came out on CD though, so I bought the cassette tape. It probably wont last another 30 years as the tape material stretches and warps and changes eventually ruining the tape.
So nice of you to react to this song. It was a big hit. Even after not hearing this song for a long time, I could sing along. Another new artist you might like is The Teskey Brothers. An Australian soul and blues rock band. They were founded in 2008. Their latest song "Oceans Of Emotions" is so good!
Please check out Johnny Lang, his early years first. Also Robert Randolph and the Family Band. A couple Canadian bands, Chalk Circle, Platinum Blonde and Barstool Prophets. As well as revisit the Tragically Hip, maybe New Orleans Is Sinking.
90's alternative is what I love, and this had not changed, the harder alt, the better. When this came out, it changed my opinion of other genres, Stigers is pretty awesome. This whole CD is a must-listen. "You're All That Matters To Me," "Never Saw A Miracle" and "I Guess It Wasn't Mine" are three others that stand out for me, along with "This Time" from his sophomore release. I hope you get around to reacting to some of these.
One thing I love about this channel is rediscovering songs I loved but had forgotten about.
I know exactly what you mean
I’ve never heard this song. And I think it’s a dud
His whole CD was a fave. Never found it in the digital age.
Planning a road trip soon. This will be going on my playlist.
I think it's a dud ( even though no one asked what I think )
I have NEVER heard of this guy or this song. What a great song! This man has a beautiful voice. Man! That was so good!
Welcome to Curtis Stigers… every song from this album is an absolute banger, don’t be afraid to check out more of him
I was just going to say that! I love this album!
@@joethomas1775 it’s always been underrated

Yeah, spot on brother!!

Really cool info. I Went to High School near Boise and the guy is about my age and I don't think I had ever heard of him before.
I always "wonder why" Curtis Stigers wasn't more successful with that voice AND a great sax player!

Omg the passion in his voice!! I feel every bit of emotion. Wow. I have not heard this in so many years!

First time for me as well. Why was this guy not everywhere
