I played bass for this song in a cover band, it's the hardest Beatles song to play, also the weirdest and trippiest. It really does twist your brain around. All the parts, drums guitar bass vocals harmonies, come together to create this unique effect.
Ringo's drumming on this is even more impressive when you hear the speed at which it was originally recorded. They slowed it down for the actual release. Well done for visiting this track guys. Best wishes to you both. Adam, Somerset, UK.
Revolver box set is the Beatles BEST re-release on vinyl, they have a 7" EP w/ both Rain & Paperback Writer, but the demo tracks & outtakes are just surreal. Peace & love ✌️
This is one of the two songs where the Beatles' engineer Geoff Emerick rigged up two bass amplifiers facing each other with one having the transducer wiring reversed so that it functioned like a giant microphone and took in the sound waves from Paul's amp and turned them to electrical signals going to the board, I guess. Paul and Geoff had talked about how they could get a really BIG bass sound like on Motown records in those days. The other song they used this on was "Paperback Writer." Paul also used a Rickenbacker bass on this cut, although he's shown in the video playing his trusty Hofner. I've had each of the Beatles as my favorite at different times. When I was a drummer in elementary and junior high it was Ringo. In bands I've favored singing George songs because his range is lower. John was such a great shouter...nobody could holler like him. Paul is the great melody writer of our time.

I'd say Paul does most of the hollering songs, from Long Tall Sally through to Oh! Darling, via I'm down and Helter Skelter. John has a couple of notable ones too, of course, famously Twist and Shout, plus there's Bad Boy and Don't Let Me Down. Both pretty good at the belting, I'd say.
@@benjaminbarrera214 it was John who asked Geoff Emerick about how songs in the U.S. have a more bass presence than Beatles records in the UK. Geoff told John that it had to do with cutting the record so that the record needle wouldn't jump when playing song with a heavier bass content. EMI's technical division came up with a way to control the bass so that there's more bass without causing the record needle to jump. It's called Automatic Transient Overload Control, or ATOC. Paul! Funny, sweet, honest to reporters, love the fans, family man-always playing with John’s son, where John learned how to handle kids- he was clueless. And his songs! Never stopped writing and could play so many instruments-compared some bands to the orchestration of the past times. He was always about the moods and changes in timing in his songs. And soooooo cute! Fell at first sight!❤
As a child in 1964, I liked Paul best, but from about '67 to the present day it's all about Lennon for me! That's not to say Paul isn't a freakin' genius, too. They all were great in their way, but Lennon was an incredibly unique talent. We still miss you, John!
I couldn't pick a favorite Beatle because they're all great. Like a litter of pups that are all different in their own way, yet all similar, you have a love for all of them.
You have to realize this band STOPPED touring at the height of their popularity and with no social media at the time, just radio remained and still is one of the best selling bands of all time and they broke up almost 60 years ago..by far THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME
are they? i think the Bee Gees and The Beach Boys are right up there, But The Doors are nearly equals, and if Jim Morrison had not died, who knows how much they would have accomplished.
The bass and drums on this one are so good. I also really love the backwards vocals near the end, with John singing "rain" but it's played backwards. One of my favorite Beatles gems.
I've always been a Paul guy but of course acknowledge the immense talent of John, George and Ringo. John was so creative especially in their early to mid-years and also had a great voice. Paul is the most talented musician of the group, the professional when needed to get things started and done, and also a nice guy, like Ringo, so I believe he was the most important member. George played some great lead and rhythm guitar along with his superb backing vocals/harmonies. Ringo kept things loose and kept the beat ... all ... the ... time.
The guitar John is playing here was his 1965 Epiphone Casino. George also had one but not using in this video. Paul had previously bought a '62 that he used in the studio for some big hits. John eventually sanded the finish off to bare wood for better resonance. That version is best known from their rooftop concert. BTW, George is my favorite.
The first Pop Song with backward masking on it. That gibberish singing at the end is actually the first line reversed. And if you really want to get "trippy" with the Beatles check out 'Love you to, 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds', 'Only a Northern Song', 'It's All too Much', 'Blue Jay Way'. 'Inner light; 'I'm only Sleeping", 'Baby You're a Rich man' and "Because".
My Oklahomies...this was a B-side of a 45...with the great Paperback Writer on side A. I was in grade school, and my neighbor, Mike, had the 45. In the summer, when his folks were at work, we would crank up both songs, and play air instruments, only using fireplace shovels for guitars and butter knives for drumsticks. He wound up being class president, so it is obviously good for you. I'll share this with him. Thanks y'all. Merry Christmas!
This song is historic because the guitar and voice was effected with a fuss tone device which was the precursor to distortion ..no other song was ever recorded with this effect that soon took over all facets of rock music...much love .
Oh, you really need to show amber "Blackbird" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"! She will love them! Also, you listened to the live version of Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You" when you started the channel, but neither of you have listened to the studio recording of that song, which is so superior to the live version, and is one of the greatest achievements in audio recording history. I highly recommend listening to that studio recording as well. it will touch your soul. Peace
Actually, Amber did listen to “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with Jay. She may have forgotten - it was one of their earliest reactions. Neither of them realized or acknowledged that it was a song written/sung by George - my favorite Beatle!
So when this song was recorded during the “ Revolver “ sessions . The Beatle purists were wondering what’s going on with the Beatles. This was when they started using LSD - you can definitely hear it on Tomorrow Never Knows - way trippy
The last phrase he sings you cannot understand, because it is "When the rain comes" recorded backwards. (semoc niar eht nehw ). You could only hear it if you put the record on and spun the turntable backwards. I used to do that on my record player. Neat little trick. When this first came out, it was instantly one of my favorites by them. Great song. Thanks for reacting to it.

Ringo Starr said himself, this is his favourite drum beat
Psychedelic captures the time and the harmonies of the Beatles are incredible all their tunes and my favorite Paul McCartney !
The more you listen to this the more you appreciate it's brilliance.
Yes it is.
Love this song- a true classic.
I couldn't pick a favorite Beatle because they're all great. Like a litter of pups that are all different in their own way, yet all similar, you have a love for all of them.
I had totally forgotten this one! Thanks for playing it!
Always loved Paul & after the Beatles his music with Wings is what I grew up on. Love it to this day 😊
The drumming in this is so good
The bass is also unhinged
B side us awesome also, Paperback Writer
Ringo's drumming is letter perfect on this. Nothing embellished or over the top but precisely what the song needed.
We gotta get some more Beatles reactions from you guys. They're the absolute best.
The last part of this song is the first time anyone anywhere had ever used a backwards vocal track. 💂♂💂♂💂♂💂♂
Thank you for playing my favorite Beatles song
My Oklahomies...this was a B-side of a 45...with the great Paperback Writer on side A. I was in grade school, and my neighbor, Mike, had the 45. In the summer, when his folks were at work, we would crank up both songs, and play air instruments, only using fireplace shovels for guitars and butter knives for drumsticks. He wound up being class president, so it is obviously good for you. I'll share this with him. Thanks y'all. Merry Christmas!
Must hear.....Got to get you into my life........great song
This song is historic because the guitar and voice was effected with a fuss tone device which was the precursor to distortion ..no other song was ever recorded with this effect that soon took over all facets of rock music...much love .
44 years ago tomorrow December 8th. One of the saddest day of my life. the whole world reeled......
I agree. Still hard to believe. So senseless
Ringo has said his best drumming was on this song. My fav Beatle is Ringo, I started playing drums back in 1965 because of him.
You guys really do spread love and light 💕
Dear prudence is a great song by the Beatles which shows how far they came, a real collection of instruments and sounds and songwriting. ❤
So when this song was recorded during the “ Revolver “ sessions . The Beatle purists were wondering what’s going on with the Beatles. This was when they started using LSD - you can definitely hear it on Tomorrow Never Knows - way trippy
6:11 Melody is the most alluring part of a song for me (not much of a rap person), so my ranking would be Paul > John > George > Ringo.
Love Lennon's voice. ❤️ Great song. Thanks guys. 🤩
Great show, you guys are adorable and your reaction to Rain was great. I saw your reaction to REVOLUTION today too!!!! That was FANTASTIC. I have a lot of catching up to do!
Tomorrow Never Knows. One of the first Psychedelic songs
I think Rain was one of the first psychedelic songs.
The flip side of Rain is Paul's Paperback Writer. The songs were released as Double A-sides. The Beatles did the Double A-side release again with Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane.
You know that it's one of the earliest psychedelic songs if it's in in black and white
Physcadelic guitar, backwards tape loop, Ringo’s unassuming yet perfect drums and Paul’s amazing bass line. Thanks for the memories.
