During her time on the TEDxSpokane stage, Tracy wants to normalize the cult experience. She hopes to “shed the shame that comes from it (cults)”. Tracy shares her unique experience growing up in a cult and will make you rethink your definition of a cult. Not all cults are on compounds, they might just be starting on the couch next door.
Tracy is a Journalism Lecturer and Religion Reporter. She favors "Ted Radio Hour:NPR” because listening to other's views opens her mind to new ideas. When she is not nurturing her houseplants, she is riding her road bike.
In her time on the TEDxSpokane stage, Tracy wants to
normalize the cult experience. She hopes to “shed the shame that
comes from it (cults).” Tracy shares her experience growing up in a cult, how her and her mother found themselves on that living room
couch, and the shape of their relationship now.
Fun Fact: Tracey’s favorite food is chips and spicy salsa. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
This was so sad, but has such hope. The way cults prey on the basic psychological needs of others is so manipulative, dangerous, and heartbreaking. I hope her mom sees this and her heart is softened.
Could you imagine is they offered cult awareness in high school. Imagine the fit people would have!
Ah! This is interesting! How do you define a cult when the line between cult and religion (or any ideology) is so blurred?
One of the differences is time
In my opinion, your superpower is being a real, inspirational person. Brava.
I’ve known Tracy for a decade now. It’s been an honor to watch her grow. You’re an amazing woman, Tracy. I hope someday your mom can have the sight to actually see you. She’d be amazed at who you are.
Awww 💔❤ iPray your mom comes around. Can't imagine the hurt...bless you. 💕
This happened to me I’m sorry 😢 . 53 just recognizing what “happened”. Bless you we are worthy of a lot more than what was put upon us.
This happened to me a mega church n then a house church finally out of all n I still wonder why?
Ex- Jehovah's Witness here after nearly 40 years in the cult.
Parents shunned me when I resigned for 3 years until mum got cancer, now they contact me but it's awkward.
Great talk! Thanks for being so self-revealing! Bless you my friend!
Tracy is one of the coolest people I know. Glad to have had her as an instructor, employer and friend. Great talk.
Do you know how to contact her???
@@petyaanguelova7048 I do!
"She gained recognition, but lost her vision" and her daughter! So sad really. Glad Tracy is standing for rights and understanding.
This is amazing and so sad
This was great!
that's crazy! my mom just did the same thing to me.... she doesnt see me beacuse I dont do what "god" says I should do
I can relate as being raised Jehovah's Witness
Wow, so sorry, I hope your mom Will see the Truth
Man this is sad….. when Jesus came to the earth and He healed the sick and ate with sinners. Only follow someone if you can look at the Word of God and see that they are following Christ.
Do you know how to contact Tracy or anybody who's left a cult successfully?
I actually know someone who may be interested in talking to you. If you leave your email here, maybe we can chat further.

Me n my friend left Not one but two cults
What is the name of the cult?
I googled online I can't find it.
Many single mothers choose their new partners over their own children, no brainwashing necessary. In her case, her mother chose the cult and the new husband over her. Abandon all hope, just move on.
Jim Jones was an atheist and preached social justice. Try his church.
I don't think that is a Buddhist saying. What are your sources for that?
She lost me at “impactful”.
Is it even a legitimate word? Sounds like corporate speak.
