- I have no idea what show this is from but I just found it on an old VHS tape i found stored away in a box. Update 19/5/09 - This is a clip from the series "Swap Shop"
It is a song about a waiter who pursues a meatball over quite a distance. A diner sneezes, sending the meatball off his dish and on a journey. I just realised the tune is the same as 'On top of old smokey'.
If anyone remembers what show this is from please let me know in the comments. Thanks!
Enjoy!
I have been searching for this for 10 years....
Terishkova Bear and me 13 years
I heard this nearly 9 years ago, and I am so glad I finally remembered it
I was beginning to think hearing this as a nursery rhyme as a kid was all a dream
havnt seen this in almost 20 years
OMG I can die in peace now
This is one true Italian man. He chases his meatballs instead of finishing his shift at work.
I would like your comment but it’s at 69-
He could be Swedish, you know.

Was this video filmed in Italy?
when i was a child this was my mom mom and i’s favorite song. we’d sing it in the car , at the dinner table , before bed when i spent the night, anywhere. in november 2020 she passed away and this songs been stuck in my head except i couldn’t remember the words or the tune , just the meatball rolling away. after months and months of searching i finally found it and like a rush i was taken back to the back seat of her car , the dinner table , and my bedroom at her house. thank you internet.
If you are Australian it's Mum not Mom

This is mine and my dad's favorite song lol. We can have any kind of pasta and one of us will break out with "ON TOP OF SPAGHETTIIIIIII, ALL COVERED WITH CHEEEEEEEEEEESE" and then mom facepalms, and the other siblings either join in or facepalm with mom. Good days.
Dang sounds like a meatball would be your family coat of arms, they way you put it here...
This is the most important love story on the internet.
true true! ☺
:D
Yuh for meatballs it is
Damn. Imagine Italian waiters wages back then. RIP
I concur.
This may be the most emotional video I've ever seen on youtube...I'm gonna cry...that poor man, no one should ever have to go through that.
When I was little I used to cry when I heard this song

Man, the emotion he puts into that final line is incredible. The sound of pure heartbreak.
Wait so he loses one meatball so he decides to walk home instead of finishing his shift?Wow man that guy takes his meatballs seriously.

I remember hearing this when I was in Grade School, back in the 60's, and so I did a Search on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -- Here is what I found!
"On Top of Spaghetti" is a well-known ballad and children's song written and originally performed by folk singer Tom Glazer in 1963. The song is sung to the tune of "On Top Of Old Smoky". A group of children (billed on a 45 rpm record as "Sharon and the Lollipops") sing the chorus in the original recording.

Many have covered it (or tried to) but none match the rawness of this version. Essential.
It’s sad that sneezing in public now is forbidden
Protect the meatballs
This song scared the shit out of me, when I was a child. Lol!! I think I had a nightmare about it once. I just remember it was dark in the dream. The meatball rolled outside and was in some dirt. I was so scared to go outside to retrieve the damn meatball. Lol.
This show also gave me a nightmare that I’ve remembered my whole life! This was from the show with that guy “mr.world” right? My nightmare was about him and he tickled me to death
This along with those Peter Combe songs were fillers between show during morning and afternoon kids TV. Remember this one but didn't know it was Joe Dolce who had that song Shaddap You Face
The singer / ac tors name is Franco Valentino. Its a pity he has not been correctly credited. He was a very generious man!
I had to memorize this song for school when I learned about inertia.
You mean Italy?
obsesstivereader21 No, I mean inertia. My science teacher told my classmates and I to memorize this song when we were learning about inertia. Inertia is any change to an object's state of motion.
That absolutly correct, Michael Aderson!! Void of inertia, the school of tuna drop their mortal shackles and soar above the celestosphere to face the trials of Sally and The Manders.
My nana would sing this with us when we were small while making meatballs. I miss her so much. Patricia Rose Deltufo Mcdonough❤
My girlfriend randomly started singing this to me and I sadly never got to hear it as a child, but as a 32 year old man in the year 2023, THIS SHIT SLAPS.
This is such a tragedy, he was so happy at the start :(
This was from "ABC for Kids Video Hits Vol. 1"

Michael S. I damn near wore that tape out when i was 5 years old, couldn't beat down on the corner by creedence

Okay, so i know I'm not making this up but you seem to have a good 90s knowledge because you know what this was from. Do you the song that went "just give us five more minutes. Five more minutes. Five more minutes, oh wont you give us five"
@@Tori-vz5er Omg! I remember that was on Saturday Disney once! It was like a dad with his kids singing? I often get it stuck in my head all these years later and can't find it anywhere! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who remembers this song! 😂
Thanks for Sharing this... My grandmother was in this video clip and was great to see it again after so many year... She recently passed away but seeing her on here brought a small to my face.
this might be one of the oldest comments i have ever seen. hope you are still doing good!
@@saucy_taco Agreed!
Just out of curiosity, which lady was your grandmother? There are 2 ladies, one in a light blue dress and one in dark blue dress.
I woke up today w/this dumb song stuck in my head, LOL I was a preteen when it was published.
I have been whistling this tune for well over a year now and at this very moment I started singing "and then poor meatball, rolled out of the door" ... I'm so happy I found the song.
OMG! I've been looking for this clip for ages!
Yep, Nick is right, it used to be on ABC kids between shows! I loved watching it!! I can't wait to show my little boy!
My grandpa sang this to me when I was a baby. My dad said grandpa was holding me and started singing it. The man wasn’t even Italian haha. Apparently I loved it and started laughing. Miss him though didn’t see him very often he died when I was 12.
i love when he's looking for it around the trees.
I happened to find this song after 17 year from 2024 after i remember it from my grade 4 class where my teacher showed us this exact video.
"On Top of Spaghetti" is one of those timeless tunes that manages to weave a whimsical narrative with a catchy melody. What makes it the best song to some is not just its musical charm but also its ability to evoke a range of emotions, often unexpectedly. Let's break down why it holds such emotional resonance.
Firstly, there's the nostalgia factor. For many, this song is a childhood memory, often associated with carefree days and simpler times. The mere mention of meatballs rolling off a plate can transport listeners back to family dinners, school sing-alongs, or summer campfires. Nostalgia has a powerful way of tugging at heartstrings, and "On Top of Spaghetti" is like a time capsule of fond memories.
Then, there's the humor. The absurdity of the song's premise-spaghetti turning into a series of calamities-is inherently funny. From the meatball's great fall to the sneezing effect, each verse paints a comical picture that's hard not to chuckle at. Laughter is a universal language, and "On Top of Spaghetti" speaks it fluently, often eliciting smiles even from the grumpiest of listeners.
But beneath the humor lies a deeper emotional core. The song's narrative of loss and redemption resonates with the human experience. We've all experienced moments of disappointment or failure, where things seem to spiral out of control like runaway meatballs. Yet, just as the song's protagonist finds hope in a brand new meatball, we too find solace in the idea of second chances and new beginnings.
Moreover, there's something inherently cathartic about singing along to "On Top of Spaghetti." Whether it's belting out the chorus with friends or performing goofy gestures to mimic the spaghetti's journey, there's a sense of release in embracing the song's silliness. In a world filled with stress and uncertainty, allowing oneself to be swept away by such lightheartedness can be incredibly therapeutic.
When it comes to the emotional impact of the song's clip, visuals can enhance the experience even further. Imagine animated spaghetti noodles dancing across the screen, accompanied by a chorus of joyful voices. The clip could juxtapose moments of chaos with scenes of camaraderie and laughter, reinforcing the song's themes of resilience and togetherness. By the end of the clip, viewers would not only find themselves tapping their feet to the beat but also feeling uplifted by the sheer exuberance of it all.
In essence, "On Top of Spaghetti" isn't just a song-it's a journey through laughter, nostalgia, and the resilience of the human spirit. Its emotional depth, coupled with its infectious melody, makes it a timeless classic that continues to delight audiences of all ages. So, whether you're feeling blue or simply in need of a pick-me-up, just remember to cue up this whimsical tune and let the spaghetti do the rest.
Oh god, it wasn't a hallucination. I heard this once, maybe 30 years ago, before I was in school, and I still knew every word. I thought I'd made it up.
🎶But the mush was so taaaasty,
As tasty could be,
And early next suuuumer,
It grew to a tree.🎶
Happier ending. I didn't even know this was a real song until today, but as a kid that's how we always finished it.
I suddenly remembered this today. Lol I used to watch it when I was 10. Now I'm 24. Like my comment so that I can go back and remember my childhood. So nostalgic.
As a meatball myself I find this offensive
I hate being covered in cheese too
My favourite song from my childhood, I sang it every Saturday lunch to my sister as she was eating her spaghetti and meat balls and she hated it, my mum & dad who laughed a lot at my antics said stop teasing your sister and let her eat her lunch.
This is definitely part of the Saturday AM line-up going back to when it was common for shorts like this to play between other shows. This goes back to the late 70's. The song has more lyrics and was originally released on a record in the early 60's. It's a great song.
i have this same tape and i was looking for this song to show people to see if they had it as kids too!
F**king banger!
Definetely the best one of all!!! We been singing this one for years over our spaghetti dinners with the family and our friends. Thanks for posting it and I sent it to a couple of friends.

Yo. You rock for uploading this. Bonus points for the VHS look. Used to sing this with my cousins when I was a kid.
I remember hearing this growing up, gets stuck in my head to this day
Genuinely the saddest, most heart wrenching song of my childhood
This is hilarious! I don't know why this song was going through my mind this morning but I looked it up and found this video.😂😂😂 Too funny!
Still one of the hardest tracks to this day
Can we just acknowledge for a moment, the phenomenal skill of whoever’s playing that mandolin?
When i was in elementary school. We had a music teacher. When our music teacher would teach us guitar. Before we started playing. She started singing this song with her guitar i miss that teacher alot. Those memories. Just remembering giggling with everyone not knowing id be looking back at it nearly a decade later. Good times.
The singer / ac tors name is Franco Valentino. Its a pity he has not been correctly credited for this. He was a Sydney based actor, in the 80's & 90's & can be found in many adverts of the time.
Thank you! They’ve been saying it’s Joe Dolce ( of “Shaddup you Face” fame) I look at this singer and keep telling myself that it looks nothing like Joe! I just did it again, now! I tried to see if I could see Joe Dolce in in this person and I still couldn’t! Reading your comment gave me a bit of an “I knew it!!” moment! I was wondering who it actually was. Thanks again! 😃👍
That is also the plot from The Sopranos.
I remember watching this on Sesame Street back in the 80s
The singer there though, was the actor for Aloysius "Snuffy" Snuffleupagus.
This one is Joe Dolce.
The meatball was still intact until he squished with his hand

A music video from "Swap Shop"!! This must be very rare. Swap shop was an awesome show - one of my favourites whilst growing up.
I also remember they sometimes played this clip between shows (like Sesame Street) in the morning (on ABC TV) back in the late 80s - early 90s.
A true cinematic masterpiece. I can’t believe how well this has aged and how perfectly it was produced. You poured your heart and soul into this song and it really shows. Thank you. 😊
Why is this so good, it's like having non existent memory
THANK YOU
We used to watch this when we were tiny and still had a TV that could play tapes! ;-;

I watched this on ABC Children’s TV in early 80’s as a child. Brings back old memories.
I remember seeing this on the Afternoon Show on the ABC with James Valentine when I was a kid.
One of my great aunts use to sing this song at every family gathering when I was growing up. It was her theme song, LOL! It's one of my favorite childhood memories.
1:01 is the funniest part
0:39 is due to the physical impossibility of the scenario, and the sound of the sneeze itself!
Hittin that high note lol. Sketti w/meatball is one helluva meal (rick james voice)
