Matt, you've come a long way in doing reviews. I really love the way you talk about everything, and I also love how everything you talk about blends together with one another to send a cohesive message, while still showing the distinctness of each subject. I wish you good luck and thank you for your vids! :)
This thing is so baller. Love the design and the interior review with you and Beth Oml that interior is incredible. If I wasn’t such a Mercedes fanboy this would be too on my luxury list. Love the reviews!!!! Cheers m8
Genesis definitely going in the right direction & not giving in like other manufacturers (Cadillac, Chevrolet,Ford) who doesn't think sedans are dead!! The styling & impressive interior design really puts this vehicle in direct competition with the Germans (Cadillac pay attention)! I need to take a test drive to really analyze it's potential! Way to go Hyundai for giving the ppl more options without sacrificing style & luxuriousness!!
Really like your filming and editing on this one, great review. I've owned Hyundai cars for the past 5 years or so and they have came a long way from the Hyundai I would see on the road as a kid.
Thanks for calling out their lane keeping system! For some reason Straight Pipes really likes it. I have a really long commute and test drove a last-gen G80 with very high expectations of the lane keeping system. I thought it was crap. It had significant issues with ping-ponging and riding onto the shoulder. In comparison to Tesla, Cadillac, BMW, and Audi systems that I drove, it was by far the worst.
Your experience with the highway assist is exactly opposite what every other reviewers experienced. They said it’s the best out there along with Tesla.
Super Cruise is entirely hands free on most highways for as long as you're on the highway. I talk about it more in my CT6 review and will be talking about it in my 2021 Escalade review next week too. ruclips.net/video/MsEoUHKQdO0/видео.html
I know I have said this before, but the front large smiling shape grille is a turn off for me; I realize that is subjective. Fender is nice, creative. Wheels are fancy also, like them. I always like that Matt includes 3:00 a review of the key fob, and of course, "engine start button, and it starts right up" I wonder if Matt will ever do a review in which Matt says, "engine start button, but car won't start." Korean cars usually are a bargain though the difference in price is not as wide as it used to be.
This thing is pure luxury man. I would love to own one! Also I think the radar beeping triggers when you're stopped and you stop looking forward. I have a sonata and it does the same thing. It drives me crazy but it's my fault for looking elsewhere I guess lol
It does notify you when the car in front pulls away if you don't move up too, but this was different. It actually pulled up the radar on the display to show me how close I was to the imaginary objects lol.
Hey Matt, is it possible the radar was picking up speed controls in the area...I think I heard in some reviews that it has that capability...Great review! 👍🏽
my 2010 twin-turbo ecoboost MKS is averaging right now 21.7 mpg here in texas. 360 and 375 lb/per originally, then a few years back I had a tune build giving 415 hp and 440 lb/per. today has 103.442 miles on her. and so...i think they should be doing better with a 4 cylinder...but this is to much weight, not allowing it to be a 4 and asking it to be an 8.
A vast majority of people are going to have NO IDEA what kind of car this is and just guess its some kind of 100k car they have never heard of or seen.
Great review. I really appreciate Matt not holding the lack of athleticism against this new G80. Even enthusiasts can appreciate a well-done comfy cruiser luxury sedan. I’d personally have this over any of the German options in this segment just by virtue of its uniqueness. Totally agree that the German options in this segment are getting bland and boring now. I’d probably pony up for the 3.5TT, though.
He still hasn’t learned how to turn on the active lane keep assist. Every other reviewer on RUclips says Hyundai/Kia/Genesis have the best LKA. My Kia hold in the center even around curves perfectly.
If the G70 Sport Brake actually makes it to the US and isn't 60k...I'm going to really need to organize my finances to get one. However, I'd bet if it makes it to the US, they'll price it inline or above the GV80, and we'll continue to get the "america hates wagons" trope. The G80, though (on-topic); very nice.
There is no way any shooting brake from Genesis will come stateside as sales will be dismal. That's very sad, of course, but market reality. Even the Mercedes E Class wagon is a special order vehicle since they sell in such low numbers.
@@LearnAboutFlow C'Mon, they gave us a manual G70 (for a bit) and the Stinger is STILL available (for now)...there's still hope it comes here...but I'm not holding out hope for pricing at all.
Nice review, Matt. I think that this vehicle competes more with the tier-two marques - Acura, Lincoln and even Lexus who straddles tier one and tier two. When it comes to the Germans, Genesis doesn't quite match their powertrains nor does the material quality match that of the top-level trims. Another problem is that Genesis, while cheaper than the Germans and Lexus, just isn't cheap enough. If one thinks back to the beginnings of Lexus, there was much more value offered than Genesis is currently offering. Not that they aren't offering value, but I just don't think that they are offering enough. I do hope they survive, though, and grow to offer also heritage of some sort -- the more competition the better!
I like the direction of the model but don't think the design language will age very well, especially the front. I guess though it makes sense that the immediate statement and differentiation is more important now than when the car's on the used market in 5 years.
@@IReahpZz yes. See what you did there. You’re right. Higher dollar amount new Lexus. Just sad see greater percentage loss on better value car. More lost relative Hyundai.
@@zzhughesd yeah but if you retain more value it shouldnt be much of an issue. 40k genesis sedans from 2015 still go for over 20grand with 50-70k miles on them. Right in line with the lexus gs/es and those cost more new. I'd say it holds value well
genesis has a leg up on depreciation since it's way cheaper to begin with compared to other luxury rivals. If depreciation is your worry, you should not buy luxury cars ESPECIALLY not German! Check how much a 5 year old AMG car is it's laughable.
@floyd watt There's quite a few camouflaged electric G80s and GV70s spotted testing, on top of the smaller CUV on a bespoke electric platform shared with the upcoming Ioniq 5. Check out the Korean Car Blog, there's new spy shots every week at least. Since many markets banned combustion engines in 2035 and some, in 2030, we're waaay past the point where hybrids make sense to be developed and sold. It's old news. Besides, the folks at Genesis are smart and they said that they won't sell any hybrids or Phevs at all and go full EV and ICE, no in between. As for the G80, the electric variant is so important for them that they delayed the launch of the G80 Sport to concentrate on making the G80e ready for production faster
and smarter. Merc will breakdown in 2 years and out of warranty, and it's worth almost nothing when you sell it. I guess if you're rich it doesn't matter lol
Stop asking for everything to be sporty. You spend way too much time talking about what you wish the car was and not what it is or what it's trying to be. In all your reviews you do it a lot. Everyone isn't a driving enthusiast so when you talk about that so much it makes the review sounds way more negative than you intend it to be.
I talk about things from an enthusiast perspective because most of my subscribers are enthusiasts. If you listened to what I said in the handling segment, I said that it's okay that it's not sporty because most people buying a luxury car just want luxury. Genesis used to offer a sport trim and now they don't. I thought that void was important to mention for my subscribers.
I agree, if it's just straight up luxury, then that's a huge plus. I don't ask for, nor do I want, sporty. Is there, or isn't there a market for the Mercedes Benz S class?

Great looking car, those wheels are really cool
those wheels are amazing, I'm sick of the generic looking diamond cut wheels on every car out there.

the turn signals in the fender?!? that is some cool innovation! great video Matt!

The louder engine noise is artificially pumped in- you can turn it off in the infotainment.
Stinger with a suit on? Sign me up! This thing looks fricken sweeeeet
Normally I am not a fan of big grills but since the G80's looks like the Genesis badge it just pleases me.

it's already out in Korea. Looks kind of goofy in my eyes. They slanted the head and taillights. It looks a bit dumb.
