Great 2 week summary Pete! Real step up from GB so thanks for testing it out for us. Still not ready to take the leap. Subscription model is a drag but not the reason I won’t get it yet. Testing out BandLab first and seeing some similarities. A different way to create but looking forward to something new. 🤘👍
Totally. It won’t be right for everyone. Or even right for some folks right now. Use what works for you and helps you make your best music.
This first version is really amazing. I would like to see all my third party plugins listed as instruments not effects in one place labeled “Third Party AU plugins “ but this is an amazing example of well thought out first version. 👽✌️
Truth. There’s some definite improvements that can be made.
Great overview, Pete! Yes, the file import needs improvement, but the biggie for me that currently doesn't exist is importing EXS instruments. I have sample libraries that are set up as multiple EXS instruments. I tried using AudioLayer, but it's been really hit-and-miss. So was really looking forward to finally importing EXS instrument directly into Logic, and I hold out hope that it's only a matter of time.
Yeah right? I’m sure we will find a bunch of things like this that aren’t supported. We can hope the updates will address these sort of things over time. I guess the more we talk about and share feedback, the better it can get? That’s the hope anyway.
Another great video Pete. Regarding the Drummer, what I love is the ability to convert to midi, and from there be able to edit on a note by note basis if you need to. Not something I’d necessarily do all the time, but it means you can get your drum track sounding exactly as you need it to fit the song.
Totally. We had to use a workaround for this in GarageBand so great to have this level of flexibility.

I think it's a great start for what they've brought to the ipad version. As someone who's been using desktop logic for quite some time, I think it's definitely awesome that it's available on iPad now. I do have some complaints about it though, like transferring projects from desktop to the ipad version has been a little tedious for me. Part of that is also that not all of the instruments from the desktop version are available on iPad, especially the legacy plugins. I use a lot of the legacy instruments and vocal effects on desktop, so trying to import my projects over isn't really the best and I really hope they bring more of those instruments to the ipad version.
Yup. I haven’t used Logic Pro Mac a heap but heard from many folks that the “round trip” is not quite that easy. Hopefully they will refine and improve this over time.
Cant you covert your third party to audio, then transfer to a LP for mac?
Coming from Garage Band, I just got this last night and am so excited to dive in head first. Thanks for this video and I'll definitely be checking out your other stuff. I think Apple realized this is made primarily for guys like me and the lower subscription price makes it easier to get in the door.

Hightlight an audio region and open the Inspector. You'll find the Quantize options there, including swing and strength. If you set the scope to Track instead of Region, you'll find Flex Time which should allow you to make sure that every peak in the audio region is in time with the Tempo. So you have two options with audio files.

Nice video, very informative. In case it serves to someone. I did a test of taking an alchemy preset from the desktop version of logic to the ipad, and it did work.
The ipad version of alchemy does not come with the 3600 desktop Logic presets, so you can open them in logic ipad and save them to your own presets.

For people coming from Garage Band, it’s worth mentioning that the Markers feature will allow you to label sections the way Sections does in GB. And you can quickly set the loop area to a Marker. The more I think about file import, the more I think they made the right choice. Implementing drag-and-drop means you can use apps other than Files to manage/sort/search/preview the files. You can directly import from any cloud service with an app that supports drag-and-drop. And putting off creating a file import UI gave them more time to focus on other things for this first release. Yeah, it isn’t as straight-forward, but it’s a lot of power for minimal work on their part, which is fully appropriate for a pro app.

@@PeteJohnsMusic Just to add to Robert's comment about markers are the other global tracks. Not only can you change time sigs, etc. as you showed, but you can insert these throughout the project, so that different song sections can have different time sigs, tempo, and key sigs.
WRT to markers, you can use these to set cycle lengths (double tap a marker, then choose set cycle length).
Maybe the next best thing to GarageBand song sections is the Markers that is available in Logic Pro for iPad in global tracks.
Yeah. I’m playing with markers and they’re okay. A little clunky to use in my experience so far.

Hi Pete, thanks for this enlightening video. After watching I have come to the conclusion that my favourite DAW is still Cubasis 3. Logic Pro just seems like a souped up version of GarageBand, but with a monthly subscription. Keep these great videos coming 👍

One thing I know I'm likely to miss as I get more into LP for iPad is Flex Pitch. I found Flex Time in the Inspector on an audio track, and IMO this is better than stretch mode as you can ensure that every part of the audio track is in time with the tempo. Also, one thing I miss is the ability to change the instrument on a track from within the mixer.
One tip that you probably already know, but maybe some of your viewers don't is that you can close all of the open panels by double-tapping on the bottom control bar. And double-tapping again will open them up in the same configuration as before. I hope this helps someone. Oh, and here's another one I just found: double-tapping anywhere on the ruler starts playback from that point.

You can change instruments in the Mixer by tapping the + button (don't forget to disable this once you're done). You can also do this by long-pressing on the Instrument tile name.
@@dave6960 Ah! I tried long pressing and nothing happens. Then I noticed the small diamond-shaped icon to the right of the name, so I tapped it and up came a menu that included a Replace... option. Thanks.
Excellent clear information expertly presented, thank you. How can I fix this: I’m using old Thunderbolt Display with my iPad but Logic Pro won’t play on it full screen (due to aspect ratio?). I have black strip on each side…Google, RUclips etc display perfectly however?

Tried it cancelled it not doing subscription and it is a long way from Mac logic , its just a toy and apple can see a way of selling high end iPads! Tried to move over a project from Mac but won't do it as obviously has to have the plug ins. Having used logic forever and being a Logic Pro expert the iPad version leaves me cold so far , early days but lets see where it goes
I’m not sure it’s aimed at experienced Logic Mac users, especially those who have complex workflows or use lots of third party plugins and gear. I think it’s more for folks like me, moving up from GarageBand iOS.
On it's first iteration it hasn't got the exact same features of the desktop version, therefore 'it's just a toy...' Top piece of rational, constructive criticism going on there.

I surely will move on to Logic X and update my 6 th generation ipad to a 9th or 10 th generation. Usb c or usb to lighning...is there really a difference in the sound quality coming from an audio interface ?

USB-C is just easier to use as it’s more comps to clean with more adapters. Sound quality doesn’t really vary. It can also do things like HDMI out which isn’t really supported by Lightning. So if your budget can stretch, I’d go for USB-C.
It is the future and I plan to use it for my main production but we need developers to start working on AUV3 plugin audio effects like Waves
Will be interesting to see if the “big devs” actually take iOS seriously now? 🤔

Hi Pete, is there any way to use the GarageBand iOS sampler and trim the sample in the sampler on logic pro?
Logic Pro has the Quick Sampler which allows you to trim the sample you are using. logicipad.com/
On the subscription thing, yes, I’d like to have bought it outright too so it’s a shame the option isn’t there. However, my bigger concern is will they move Logic Pro for Mac to a subscription model eventually - that’s what happened with photoshop!
Yeah, it’s a possibility. But I don’t think Apple would do it without some sort of significant upgrade.

Monitor on-off is in the fader section. Assignable MIDI? I don’t believe so.
My iPad Pro should be here tomorrow. Probably need to upgrade my interface (been using Focusrite iPad Dock, but not sure if it will work, even with adapter cable, as is set up with Lightning.)
Yeah I haven’t specifically heard of the dock will work. Lightning to USB-C isn’t really possible in my experience.

I'm curious if you think the 11" ipad is sufficient for Logic Pro? I'm leaning toward that one for portability and I do fine on the 10" with GarageBand. I know I have something like 15-30 days to return if it does not work out, but curious if you have opinion. I just need to be able to navigate and do things... I know that for something like Reason a tablet of any sort is really crowded (like a SurfacePro).
Hey there. I’ve used it on both 11” and 12.9”. 11” is totally usable. Some of the buttons are a little small so an Apple Pencil comes in handy but not essential. Now that I’ve used both, I definitely lean towards the larger screen however.

I'm also hoping Logic here will deal with some of my annoyances with GB. Worst case I have a new ipad (mine cant support Logic, so have to buy) and end up using GB anyway :)
Complexity is a normal part of any DAW , if you want to move logic files around from Mac with third party plugins to iPad you will need to simply bounce to stems. My main negative is the minimal export file options no mp3 even that’s terrible as some of the sites I share music too only take mp3.
Yeah. Apple have never supported any compressed audio apart from M4A unfortunately. You can use something like this - ruclips.net/video/QJTu4Fcj_xg/видео.html - but it is another step.

It's funny. I used Logic on Mac until the first iPad Pro dropped. I upgraded to that from an older iPad and literally only used that for everything for some 2 years. For what I am doing, GarageBand and the iDock (Apogee I think) was almost perfect! The only problems I had were minor and I used workarounds when I had to. But something that I think was bothering me was that GB does not allow for odd time signatures. Maybe it's been added now. But like many, I was waiting and waiting for Logic to come to iPad. Eventually I gave up, sold the iPad and got a M1 MBA and it's the best decision ever. I can't understand how I limited myself to the iPad now. Having that said, I *love* the iPad format and using the screen with a pen, that is for me the best experience!
But I agree with you, Pete, that they should offer both a one time purchase and a subscription plan for those that want that. Some were discussing the upcoming Logic X Pro version, will it be subscription or not.... 👀
Yeah, hopefully we will see more options over time. And I think Logic Pro will improve and have even more to offer by about version 1.1.

I’m trying Logic on iPad but I couldn’t find a feature that is impossible doesn’t exist here. Move audio transient, like auria pro does and all daws have… they exist here? Or exist only the audio quantize feature ?

logic pro for iPad seems like pretty rounded daw especially in conjunction with Final cut for iPad video\podcasting postproduction .
good as a soundboard for live streaming too.
I was less impressed by the roundtrip latency on the iPad when using keyboards and other controllers with any app.

Thank you. I needed this video. I downloaded Logic Pro on my IPad and I am not sure for my amateur level if it worth the subscription.
This makes me gravitate to buying a Macbook which I considered. They did the same with their Final Cut Pro video editing.
For now I will learn and try and decide when I come to a final conclusion. I can tell you that I am not going into Final Cut because I already have Lumafusion which has the advantage of better subtitles and titles that I need. I was waiting for the Logic Pro for IPad and I am disappointed from their subscription model so it will have to pass with flying colors before I decide to get into it permanently. I am not a pro but I love high end products. So we shall see.

Are the instrument sounds any different or better on Logic Pro?
Short answer? Yes. For some. And there are more. logicipad.com/
It's a great DAW and I'm sure lots will love it but I haven't found anything that my other DAWs don't do. Between Cubasis and MultiTrackStudio I have tempo, time sig and audio/midi stretch. So I don't think it's for me in it's current state but I'll keep an eye on it. The obvious subs issue is also a major turn off but if you can make money from it, then it's great value.
Some Positives: There's a lot of power and features in there. The UI makes sense once you get used to it and it's great when you do. The drums are great and there are a lot of sounds. The packs are optional.
Some Negatives: UI needs some work as it can blend together but customisation helps with that. Midi import is terrible, especially if you have certain packs installed as you can't choose not to use them on import (it caused an out of memory error). No midi export - which is disgraceful for a paid pro DAW.
Regarding the audio folders instead of using drap and drop, just add a way to point Logic to your custom folders. Job done.
Sounds like you’ve considered it carefully and assessed it as not right for you right now. That’s what I’m encouraging everyone to do. It just won’t be the right thing for everyone right now.
@@PeteJohnsMusic It's the way everything should be done, as I'm sure you'll agree. I'm still going to keep using it over the trial and things may change by then. Whatever my take or anyone else's, Logic being on iPad is a good thing IMO.
@@Elwaves2925 It seems like Logic being on iPad is a good thing. I just hope it doesn't hurt other DAW developers on iPad. But, for them, I hope they lean into it and point out their DAWs benefits, such as no subscription :)
@@drinkinslim I agree, it should be good if they all handle it correctly. It could bring other pro apps to the platform and push existing devs to up their game and add in missing features (that includes Logic too). On the other hand, it could push pricing up and more pro apps could mean more subs. Or it could be just another DAW and nothing really changes. There's no way of knowing right now but it's going to be interesting times. 🙂
Thanks for an excellent video Pete. I’ll think I’ll stay with GB. I’m not sure I’ll use any of the features. I’m an old 4-track tape guy so GB is technical enough for me. It seems too complicated for even a 12.9”
I really don’t like the Sub payments either. Like you if I upgraded I’d buy it outright. I don’t like the thought of going through a flat spot and see 8 $AUD going out of my account every month.

Nice review! I absolutely hate that Apple is trying to force us into a subscription model. Waves recently tried it and it didn’t go that well.
I think is great so they can hire mode developers and focus to improve the app. But I think they should add more sound presets. I mean it’s just $5 monthly.
@@diegofouche My experience with subscription based software is quite the opposite. The reason I switched away from Premiere Pro and Pro Tools is that Adobe and Avid became lazy and focused more on revenue than on fixing their bugs and developing their software.
It won’t be for everyone. That’s why personal choice and freedom is important and cool.
@@diegofouche $5 a month over a 2-3 years of use and you'll be paying more than the dekstop version... and then STILL paying. That's how they get ya. 😂
Arrangements markers ie verse chorus bridge , is a real big miss for me , others I’m enjoying it ! But still need a Mac for that arrangement and final mix down .
Yeah. I’ve found the markers track but it’s pretty clunky to use.

Mixing and mastering actually works really well on Logic Pro iPad , but use what works for you.
@@PeteJohnsMusic its just because I have a lot of third party plugins that I use that is not available on the iPad and yes mixing and mastering does work on the iPad but what I mean’t was if you use a lot of third party plugins I think you should make your ideas on the iPad and then if your wanting to finish it on the Mac that is the best way to go
My question is if ya get locked out of your apple account icloud or have a dispute with apple or your cloud carrier can you open your files. intellectual property. What if you become a banned person for differing political views etc.
Interesting question? I’m not aware of anyone who has been “banned from Apple” but maybe it exists? Like all software, I would recommend exporting as WAV files as a backup in case you don’t have access on the future.
No, people don't get banned from Apple, except if they upload pornography to iCloud, then it is probably a permanent ban, and it will serve them right. About 99% of people don't indulge in such vile behaviour. RUclips, and more especially Facebook, ban people for political views that are too extreme. RUclips ban on the spot any person who attempts to upload pornography, and furthermore, if the pornography is also illegal, they snitch to the authorities as well, unlike Facebook who take months to take action to remove pornography.

I definitely don’t like the subscription model and I have heard the Apple talking point about the lower barrier to entry but that’s BS as this supposedly pro software and if we need it we will buy it as we know it will pay for its self as speed is everything, however as you get to try it for a month I thought I would give it a fair shake of the sauce bottle. One thing I did like is the preview sounds function in the browser. A couple of things I didn’t like, firstly was the clunky way you add none logic Apple instruments, in Mac Logic you just select the track and click on the instrument and you can choose / swap your instrument really easily and quickly, maybe it’s me but this browser method seems overly complicated. Secondly a minor thing to some folk but Cubasis 3 supports inter app audio and is definitely more intuitive to use then this first version of Logic, Cubasis having a + to add a track and having the ability to easily change instruments quickly is definitely a big deal to me.

It's interesting. Apple was going to do away with interapp audio and, with Logic Pro for iPad, it looks like they've begun to do so. For me, I wish all the developers would convert their interapp plugins to auv3. There's still hope, LOL.

If I just buy one or two cheap apps less a month it will make up easily for the subscription.
I hate subscriptions too, but this is a bargain for what it offeres.

I haven’t explored this fully, but I don’t think there’s a lot of options related to MIDI learn.

Pretty much! Seems more stable and easy to use than CB though. And more features than GarageBand.

How can you load biasfx into this like garage band
AUv3 plugins can be added using the Audio FX. Inter app audio plugins are unfortunately not supported.
That’s dumb all my tones on biasfx - I just like the markers so I can loop parts like a normal daw - is biasfx going to be able to import soon hope so
I like they way with Logic Pro on Mac - where you can put in the plug-in say biasfx you can here it and it records clean and you can change fix later is this not possible on this?

Sorry. I would have thought it would downscale to 30 automatically? I started using 60fps for smoother iPad screen display, and haven’t had other feedback, but always willing to be flexible.

200 US$ for logic is nothing people spend that and a lot more on shoes every month I bought it back when I was working for fast food 9$ an hour it was the mac I saved up for that was the thing I feel like holding most ppl back but now macs are so cheap now starting with the Mac mini and now the iPad 9th gen can run logic too so with that being said this subscription better bring lots of features and a lot more consistent updates if they want ppl to sub.

I also think the browser in garage band is ten times more useful on iOS than in Logic which is a miserable experience truth be told . Third party plugins are really a pain to use as well.👽✌️

I’m finding it quite buggy, this is why I stopped using logic. I paid top dollar for a piece of software that was full of bugs. If it’s the same as the iPad I won’t continue my subscription

I also still prefer Cubasis over Logic right now. Logic isn't offering me anything I can't already do with that and MultiTrackStudio. Logic also (currently) lacks some very basic features that I'd need from it. It's a great start but it has a long way to go to match the 'game changing' praise it's getting - in my opinion. 😁

I found it atrocious. It’s clunky and super unintuitive. What a mess of an app. Creating on this would frustrate the hell out of me. I cancelled subscription and deleted after few hours of using it for trial.

You’re probably right. For me, it takes the flexibility of Auria, the visual layout of Cubasis and the simplicity of GarageBand. So, for my workflow - it’s well matched.

@@WyattLite-n-innwell when you are serious about making music for streaming services then I think paying just $5 is nothing. I pay it and I love it. I actually discovered that I am more creative by making music with iPad and then master in the MacBook. After used it I believe this Logic Pro for iPad is great
And there is not one person out there can hear a song a tell if it was created on Auria or cubasis or logic Pro
It’s a great DAW but it definitely has some flaws & needs some updates im not sure if I’m going to keep my subscription until they make some adjustments it should be a better way of using the files app for you’re own drum sounds & 3rd party samples and on the Mixer I can’t understand why I find it very cluttered on the iPad mini but I am getting use to it not a deal breaker for me.
I know I don’t have it completely down pack yet so maybe it’s user error lol I have been able fix some of my work flow complaints so I’ll be fair but great review I appreciate what you’ve been able to cover on IOS through out the years.😎😇🫡.
