Why are people equating Abbey's intuitive eating advice with "eat whatever you want and be fat"? I see multiple comments ( real ones. Not from this week's "guests") where people are saying things like "well my family is obese and eat all day. And they say they just eat whatever they want because they're hungry." Don't you guys understand that those people are NOT PRACTICING intuitive eating either? Eating past satiety, misinterpering real hunger cues when in actuality they're eating for emotional comfort, out of boredom, habit, etc is not a part of intuitive eating. Abbey said nothing like that. Intuitive eating also asks us to be fully present when eating and get rid of distractions. Most people who are eating 3 full meals plus pizza and donut snacks all day every day probably aren't mindfully chewing and sitting at a table and paying attention to their meal or their hunger cues. A lot of people eat on the go, in front of screens, etc. Please give me the time stamps where Abbey said that people should eat whatever they want whenever they want and "be fat" (not my words, commenters' words). Or at least where she made a statement that you interpreted that way. There's nuance and contexr to everything you guys.
Exactly - it's willful misinterpretation! She is a dietician, of course she encourages a largely plant based diet, and isn't encouraging people to eat junk food 24/7! She's alerting her audience to the dangers of obsessive weightloss thought and behaviours that diet culture can indoctrinate us into, because eating disorders can be equally unhealthy, if not lethal.
@@francess9656 Frances, your critical thinking skills have buoyed my spirits this morning! Thank you! However, I will say that some people may be willfully misinterpreting just to get a reaction, but others do seem to have genuinely misinterpreted Abbey's position and that is why I chimed in. Context helps and you are spot on about it! The videos she makes largely speak to those coming from a diet culture and who may have struggled with ED's. The "if you want a donut, eat a donut" type of advice, when taken within this context means--don't obsess about it, don't beat yourself up. It's ok to eat for pleasure, as well as fuel. Of course it's also ok to do a mental check to see if you're just hungry because it's past dinner and you haven't eaten your balanced meal, or maybe you're bored, sad, etc.If so, try to take care of those real needs first and if you still just want a donut? eat the dang donut! Depriving yourself of it, just makes the craving bigger.
exactly!! everyone has functioning hunger and satiety cues and it’s just a matter of calming your mind enough to notice them and listen to them! people miss the most important point, which is that your body isn’t going to mislead you if you trust it. and it’s this idea that people who overeat or gain a lot of weight somehow don’t deserve compassion. miss me with that bullshit
This is such an amazing video. I’m 27 and have been trying since age 20 to lose 50 pounds only to continuously end up back at the same weight. I realized a few things: 1) just because I’m not 120 pounds that doesn’t mean I need to lose any weight. 2) Id rather just eat intuitively and choose some form of exercise that I really love - in my case it’s riding my bike. I could never stick with a gym routine longer than 4 months before getting tired of it. Meanwhile I’m loving riding my bike and am riding around 60 miles a week because I actually enjoy it. 3) weighing myself every day is a waste of time and it makes me anxious. I’m not interested in weighing myself at all anymore. There are times when I look in the mirror and think I look great and then I’ll go weigh myself and be upset with the number and suddenly I think I look gross. A lot of it is psychological.
Why is this video receiving so many dislikes and hate comments? As a bio major and someone interested in nutrition, the information provided in this video is practical, sensible, and backed by reasonable studies. Disclaimers were also upfront and clear. There's nothing really problematic here
It is overlap from the video that Coach Greg did on her video trying to bash his lifestyle and advice. I'm here from his video as well because its crazy how stupid she was in that video lol. She claims to have watched 8 hours of content, but is clear that she just wanted to bash him for clout as he literally disproves everything she says about him.
UGH I LOVE that you said feel free to take the information you find valuable and leave what you don’t. Not everyone is the same. Also congrats on your new baby boy💜 wishing him nothing but health and happiness
I’m 4 months into recovering from bulimia and your videos are extremely interesting, they have helped me to change my mindset on how I view food and diet culture.
I’m 13 and I’ve been struggling with my body since I was 12, thank you for helping me! I’m 5”8.5 and 13 so I need to nourish myself! Now I eat healthy because I enjoy it and not because I “have” to, though I just eat whatever! I’ve been struggling with my body lately but I’m gorgeous and I should just try my best! 😊
You’re so much more interesting than your weight too! It’s helpful I find on Instagram to follow people who look like me. It’ll make you feel better about your beautiful self.
I’m a dietitian in a hospital who had a patient in tears today over all of the pressure they felt around their body and the doctors who didn’t listen and all the unsolicited advice when all I did was offer a wee bit of compassion (no seriously not my best work). Making people feel like 💩 doesn’t help anyone and all the people who told them to stop drinking pop and eating chocolate didn’t help them.
If you actually bothered to watch the guys videos, he is actually a decent person and he answers messages, yes he can be blunt but he gives good advice and helps people lose weight. Someone is a bit pathetic if being told eating properly upsets them and sometimes people need the truth. What did I learn from Greg? Enough to drop 8 stone and get my cholesterol from 6.6 to 3.... i find Abby interesting but what did i lean ? Nothing. I didn't learn about low calories filling healthy food and free recipes from her site
I love this series! I started eating intuitively again last month and it changed my life over night. My weight has been completely stable, my lifts in the gym have gone up, and I feel much happier... and I wasn't even dieting before, I was "bulking".
It's hard to just appreciate your body for the amazing machine that it is. I love the idea of body respect! I find it incredibly hard at the moment to know how to eat. I started off by wanting to eat healthier, but that just led me to a rabbit hole of being thrown around between WW, keto (Dr. Berg etc), balance but no to soy like Gillian Michaels, starchy vegan (Dr. McDougall)... I just don't know what is right anymore. I've read one intuitive eating book in the past, and unfortunately it left me so uneasy and confused that I immediately tried to loose weight using Slim Fast - which left me hungry and light headed all day. Calorie counting is the only method with which I have successfully managed to loose weight in the past, but it's not a maintainable life style. So much thought has gone into eating and what or how to eat that I feel utterly exhausted from it all. Unfortunately, you gotta eat, so it's not like I could just take a break from it while I try to somehow figure it out. I hate that everyone in the healthy eating community has a Dr. title. There's so much confusion.
Thank you Abbey for cutting through the lies of diet culture , body image, and social media! You have helped me learn so many tools to living a healthy life. Keep up the great work ❤
I have been practicing intuitive eating for about 14 months now and I have made tremendous progress thus far. I have completely repaired my relationship with food but am still working on my relationship with my body. I am overly critical of my body even though there are many things I love about it. I am a black woman who is shaped exactly like my mother. I am considered straight-sized but I am also very curvy - overall I like my shape, I do find that I am constantly body checking. This is especially true when I am at the gym or any area where people are working out. I am very active. I love running, hiking, and powerlifting. When I go for a workout on campus, however, I find myself constantly comparing my body to other women at the track. The women tend to be white, slim, and athletic. All very beautiful, strong, and capable. Whenever those intrusive thoughts like "I have the largest body here" creep into my mind I try to stop myself and say "My body is capable of doing almost everything their bodies are capable of doing". It has really helped me be less self-conscious. (having cute workout clothes helps too) Although I am proud that I have begun to interrupt my intrusive thoughts, I can't wait to get to a point where I judge my body less than I do now. I'm excited to see where I will be in 1 year using these tips more often. Thank you for this video Abbey!
Wow! This comment section is filled with super smart and happy people who are living such fulfilling lives that they would neeeever have time to join a "YT Fan Army"! Not with all the real world causes they could literally lend their voices and energy to right now! Nice! I mean could you imagine? Grown people..joining a fan army... to harass someone they've never met...on behalf of someone else they've never met... for free??
I mean... Aren't you also here spending time partaking in the drama with this comment while you could also be lending you're voice to real world causes? Seems kinda hypocritical
I watched a vid and left a comment saying i loved it. Nothing dramatic about that. I scrolled the comments, as people do, and made another. I didn't go to someone else's YT page that I don't follow and leave multiple disparaging replies, downvotes, and hurtful commentary to avenge this woman who I subscribe to and enjoy but I don't know her. Huge difference, but you know that.
I have OCD with counting calories, I don't use an app, I memorized the counts and what a portion size looks like. I have tried to avoid measuring and weighing my food so I can't be as exact with my counts, but I still find myself obsessed. I am having a huge issue moving past the rule if eating "x" allotted calories per day and find my hunger signals are all over the place, so I have issues trusting them. Any advice?
Could you try to eat different foods that you don't have memorized? For example food from another countries? You could also eat more one day and allow yourself to compensate the next day. It's not ideal, but it will help you come to terms with the fact that you don't need to eat the same amount every day. And perhaps the next day you feel strong enough not to compensate! But don't put pressure on yourself. I understand how wrong it feels to go against OCD thoughts. I suggest looking for help
id be asking why you feel OCDabout calorie counting. it should just be a tool to assistwith learning portion sizes and eating in moderation, so that you learn yourbody and yourbody’s cues- you might need to get an assist with the OCD part to figure out the why you feel you must be perfect on your calories...just my 2cents...
Exposure therapy theory (which is not a therapy, don't get me wrong I'm all for therapy and maybe it's also a option to go in therapy for this?) What I wanted to say is that exposure therapy helped for me with finding evidence for myself that I won't gain weight if I don't know my calories. Are you afraid of gaining or loosing weight too? Exposure therapy means try foods which you don't know the macro and micro nutrients of, try to eat them so now and then. It's a journey, take small steps, in the process you' will start to see that is gets a little easier to listen to your body and not counting all day. How does this information land with you?
I've cried through all the video realizing that I've always perceived my body as an enemy. And it's so true, you cannot take care of something that you hate.I guess body acceptance is a long journey but I'm so grateful for this tips and I wish I could find them earlier..Much love and a huge Thank You :)
I have BED and have struggled a lot with cycles of binging and restricting for over 10 years now. I'm going to be 30 soon and I have realized I wasted all of my 20s not doing the things I really wanted to do because I thought only thinner people deserve to do those things. I also had a parent that restricted my food intake and put me on impossible to maintain diets as early as 12 years old (in response to hypothyroidism that I had at the time). So I had to basically rewire my brain to think differently about food and my body in general. I started practicing intuitive eating at the beginning of the year and my mental health has skyrocketed. I've even managed to lose some weight and keep it off and have continued to see the results I wanted without trying as hard as I used to. And don't get me wrong, that isn't the goal of intuitive eating, but I'm regulating a lot more and don't go through the cycles of restricting then binging then restricting again. It is still a journey and I've relapsed sometimes, but it's worth it.
Your channel has motivated me to eat healthy, satiating meals again. I have been severely restricting for a few months and wanted to keep going lower and lower, but I realized the damage I was causing my body might be too great, especially considering I'll be 30 soon. Not that you should do this at any age, but it seems to be worse for me now that I am older. I worry about metabolic damage the most. Thank you so much for all your videos they are so informative and helpful.
It really speaks to the toxic potential of online culture when you see these sorts of troll onslaughts. Sad that despite Abbey very clearly encouraging a compassionate and sensitive culture in the comments section, and providing empathetic and informed content speaking to the psychology of wellness, that her sincere efforts are met with wanton mean-spiritedness and willful misinterpretation when a community's Stan is given modest critique. Come on folks - no personality is infallible. It's healthy to receive critique every once in a while, and healthy to have a critical outlook on everything and everyone. I'm very happy that Greg provides the motivation that some people need to meet their fitness goals, he is most certainly not for me and many other people online - and that's okay! There's no need to tear other people down because they see things differently.
Unfortunately for her she grossly misrepresented another youtuber trying to do the same thing she’s doing. Apologize on a video already so you can finally have you likes and dislikes shown and won’t have to keep blocking and deleting comments on all your new vids smh
It's really interesting to read the pro-ana and toxic diet culture comments on these videos. Some are so invested in the body currency exchange they react defensively when coming up against HAES. Makes me sad. I hope those people can love, honour and respect their body/mind one day.
Love this. I really feel like this is crux of intuitive eating. I love the phrase "you can't take care of something that you hate" which is so wildly true.
Yes! One thing I struggle with is feeling "fat" when I wear poorly fitting pants that squish my fat. We all have to remember that if you put tight enough pants on a size 2 or a size 0, their skin and fat will also spill out of their clothes. So just wear clothes that flatter your figure.
“Some people, especially those that don’t have a great relationship with their body, might do a quick scan of everyone else’s body and appearances and compare them to their own body.” ... Oh, I thought that was normal. Well, that’s something I need to work on.
Of course it's normal. It's NOT normal if you compare and you think someone look better and you're like "Oh, my life is screwed, I'm pathetic". But compare? All people do that, nothing wrong with that.
Scrolling through the comments, I just see a lot of angry people. Do you all need a hug? Maybe go outside for some fresh air or take a shower. It's a beautiful day. Great video as always, Abbey!
Thank you so much for this video. I wish everyone could watch this!💕😊 Also, I admire that you always take into consideration your viewers who might be suffering or recovering from an eating disorder or disordered eating. Your channel has been very helpful. 💕
Thank you for being a proponent of intuitive eating in a sea of weight loss nutritionists. Intuitive eating changed my life and helped me recover from an eating disordered perpetuated by weight loss influencers like you know who. :)
Hello Abbey. Thank you for making these videos. I have a question about body shaming. This topic comes up in your videos quite regularly and I really appreciate your acceptance when it comes to different body types. After watching one of your recent videos and listening to the response videos of that person, I have a question because I am somewhat confused about it. You have made a video about a body builder called Greg Doucette. Sorry for all the trouble and stress this has brought upon you. When you talked about his goals of becoming "super shredded" you commented with a derogatory "yikes" accompanied by a disgusted look on your face. Isn't that body shaming? Greg Doucette has stated that he is happy with his goals and his body, but you spoke as if he should be ashamed of his behavior. That doesn't feel very inclusive to me. How is this okay? Am I missing something? Shouldn't we always have an accepting attitude towards everybody and every body? I have always felt welcome on this channel, but now I fear that you would scoff at my own goals and my own body if you would actually see me, just like you did with Greg Doucette. I hope you don't write off my comment as an attempt at trolling, but see it as the thing it is truly meant to be, which is genuine concern and criticism towards your actions in this particular situation. Have a great day.
Thanks Abbey! 'Not comparing yourself to other's' really hits home for me. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self that its such a waste of time x x x
So for me, growing up I had a VERY good metabolism and even struggled to gain weight. Now that I'm well into adulthood my metabolism is not so great anymore. Gaining weight is no longer a struggle. My problem is I keep comparing my current body to my old body. At 21 I was pretty underweight and I was struggling to get to a healthier weight. At 35 I was the heaviest I've ever been. I was eating like crap. I decided to just change up my deit to eat healthier Cut out junk food and started eating more whole foods. Lost 30lbs without trying. Weight loss wasn't even my goal. But that lost of 30lbs made me feel so much better some of my chronic pain was gone. I moved in April and after making a million trips up and down stairs moving everything out of my 2nd floor apartment to the moving truck I was sooo sore. I decided again to make a change. I now workout regularly and I feel much stronger. I'm starting to like my body more with these changes. I'm not aiming for weight loss. I just got sick of being so out of shape and feeling so lazy. As I get stronger from the workouts I feel better about myself.
Literally went thrifting today and was prepared to have to return everything after trying on at home. But everything fit! I was able to get a lot of black jeans and pretty witchy/gothic tops that I love. This has boosted my mood so much. It’s been hard dealing with my weight gain over the last year but these new clothes that fit what I love aesthetically and physically fit helps so much. I’m going to be getting rid of my scale soon since it bums me out and will be trying to incorporate joyful movement. I feel like I’m finally making progress in my relationship with my body. Your Vid series and the book Nourish have helped me so so much. I’m trying to stop the body comparisons and mind my own body instead
I really appreciate you Abby, as someone who struggles with disordered eating and some mood disorders, I appreciate the content you make! RUclips is full of misinformation and toxic diet culture, and your channel is truly a beacon of light ♥️
Thanks again for this course, Abbey! Been working through it very very slowly, but it's so that I can truly get into the habit of each principal before moving onto the next one. I'm feeling so much better even though I'm still gaining weight (tho slower than before). I really do need to bring down my weight, but I'm trusting the process and feeling physically and mentally better than ever. Thank you, Abbey
Thank you for this video!!!! I’ve been struggling with body imagine since I was 6 years old!!!! I’ve been wishing to have a smaller body naturally, thinking “why do I workout and eat healthier than most of my friends and relative and STILL HAVE A LARGER BODY THAN THEM!?” I know my body is not designed to be small, my back is wide, my rib cage is big, my arms are naturally fuller too! It’s hard to come to terms with it when the media portrays women’s image as delicate and small. Thank you for helping me understand that there are things I can’t change but I can learn to be ok with, and I will work on loving the things I can do and my strong body allows me to do!♥️
Laura Dermatis because just eating healthy won’t make you lose weight if you really want to slim down and become a sexy beast check out Greg doucettes youtube channel he’s got some of the best weight loss advice on RUclips and he doesn’t give out bs
BIG FAT FISH I dont think you understood my comment. I never said I wanted to “slim down and become a sexy beast”. I had an eating disorder when I was on my teen years and the last thing I want to do is to diet again, which I did for 19 years of my life!!! Before giving any unsolicited advice please read well and understand that not everybody wants to be “slim and sexy”. Some of us want to be happy and content with our body and we accomplished that, in part, with the help of intuitive eating. Dieting NEVER made me content, IE did. Please don’t recommend anyone here that type of content. If we watch Abbey’s channel we mostly avoid channels like Gregg’s, so no thank you.
Laura Dermatis well you were wondering why you were larger than them so? And Greg’s channel is about body positivity you obviously would know if you watched him he’s about making you feel the best you can be no matter your body type
BIG FAT FISH I know why I’m larger than some other people, we are all different & I’ve come to terms with that. I watched his video about Stephanie Buttermore and I dont think it was very positive so no thanks, I pass!
Wow you really hit a nerve. Before having kids I loved wearing beautiful colourful dresses and loved to stand out. Since having my 3 bubs I wear anything that makes me blend in and hides my body. I don't feel myself and I'm definitely not respecting my body, I'm ignoring it. I'm nowhere near close to respecting my body, but I'm trying. I appreciate your videos Abbey, thank you for putting this information out there. It has given me a new perspective and hope for my future. ❤️
@weinerdrizzle157 I'm not giving her money lmao. And unlike Greg, she is an actual health professional that did a masters and bachelors in nutrition and dietetics. Some of y'all are too brainwashed by Greg's bad advice. Or maybe y'all are just moody from y'all's restrictive diets and calorie restriction. Thank you, byeeeee. -xoxo ;)
@weinerdrizzle157 Yes, it does. She's more informed on nutrition than Greg. Also, how is her information "harmful" if it's just promoting a healthy relationship with food both emotionally and physically?
@weinerdrizzle157 she literally does't even take people's money lmao. And yes, she informed, sorry it doesn't align with Greg's toxic wellness culture.
weinerdrizzle157 how on earth is learning to love your body make her a hack? Also coach Greg is a bully and supports an unsustainable lifestyle. I mean if you can eat like him until your 80 go ahead and call me and tell me I’m wrong that’s fine
I was on Weight Watchers for almost two years. I hit a "plateau" and just could not get my weight lower, no matter how diligently I followed the program. I had stopped going out to eat with friends or having a glass of wine with dinner. I was counting and counting and counting. I was miserable. I had a sudden realization that I was at war with my body and it was fighting back. I hated the way I was eating, and I hated what it was doing to my social life and mental health, and I just decided that I was going to stop fighting with my body. I wasn't going to abstain from so many things that made me happy so that my body could look different. We forget that our brain is also part of our body, and .y mental health was so much better going out to eat with friends and enjoying life and enjoying my body for what it was. Turns out that was my natural set point and as long as I honour my hunger that's where my body wants to be.
@20:15 - I think it's kinda dangerous to cherry pick your doctors to fit your own political agenda because then you might just be missing/ignoring the reason why you're sick. A doctor should be allowed to speak the harsh truth and not just what makes you feel good. i wouldn't want a doctor that just puts a bandaid on the problem and ignores the cause. If I was overweight and went to a doctor with a so called earache and they believe it's because of high blood pressure/heart disease which they think losing weight could help relieving the symptoms, then that's what i want to be told that i need to do and get help from a RD with my changing my diet in a sustainable way. I'm all for intuitive eating and that you should eat to feel good, but i don't believe that you can be healthy at every size. There is a limit of how weight you can put on your frame until your health and quality of life starts to decline and people shouldn't be denying that.
@@AshutoshKumar-tc5sl "Diets aren't sustainable" has got to be one of the broadest things I've ever heard. If you are referring to starving yourself, then yes, that is not sustainable. A diet is simply the type of food you eat on a daily basis. Eating food on a daily basis is sustainable actually, in fact its crucial for your survival. If you are talking about losing weight, then it is sustainable for a period of time while that person goes down to a "healthy" body weight. Your body is not programmed to be obese. In fact, being obese is not sustainable because it gets riddled with all these negative side effects such as high blood pressure, CHD, etc. which is exactly what a doctor will tell you. If an obese person comes into a clinic, a doctor is going to be more worried about their physical health, rather than their mental health. I'm trying to understand, are you implying that losing weight is bad for someone's mental health? In what way is it bad?
I really needed this video today. I was feeling bloated and a little down, even though I have been exercising every day and eating foods that make my body feel great. I was letting my appearance shift my happiness with the food I have been eating lately. Also love "It's impossible to take care of something that you hate and don't respect", that really hit home with me. Thanks Abbey!
I didn't knew that it was possible to hide the like/dislike ratio. Thanks for teaching me something that I would have never learned watching Greg's videos.
I’m seriously taking notes and going to start to implement some of these strategies. Thank you so much Abbey! There needs to be more helpful and positive content like this on RUclips
This is so helpful! I was wondering if you could do a RUclipsr review on possibly an athlete such as a runner or other endurance runner to show how their diet might be different than that of a fitness guru or average person. Thanks so much! Love your channel
@Amanda Muniz no offense to Abbey but do a review on an athlete running 100 or more miles a week is an entire different ball game. Gwen knows what se is doing and knows what works for her.
Oh my gosh I cant even begin to explain to you how much I needed this video today, thank you so much for posting it and being so great! I have been watching your channel for about a year now and all the content is super positive and I have gained so much from it. I have been in a total negative spiral with negative thoughts about myself/my body and although I am not active in eating disorder behaviours the thoughts have definitely ramped UP during this time of stress in my life. It seems that when I am in the negative mind space it is SO HARD to get yourself out and so easy to just keep going deeper and deeper into self hate. With this video I am reminded of what skills I can use to combat these negative thoughts (reframing/finding positive attributes about my body/focusing on what my body can do rather than what it looks like) and I am going to really try to do this! I love the saying "If you cannot love your body at the moment, work on respecting it". I think I can do that. THANK YOU ABBEY!
This came at the perfect time for me. Yesterday I was so down about my body. I stepped on the scale and let it affect my whole day and into today. Thank you for reminding me that my body is GOOD. My body created and fed a big baby. My body can do chores and take my baby on walks. My body is smart and brave and fun. My body is good.
Gambura Frälsaren I do have a healthy lifestyle. Thanks. Sometimes it’s hard to accept your body regardless of how “healthy” your lifestyle is. My body changed a lot after having a baby. It would be weird if it didn’t. I’m just making the point that it’s taken me time to learn to accept this new body.
Gambura Frälsaren sorry do you think you are doing be some sort of a favor by telling me what exactly a “healthy body is?” Are you a doctor? Have you seen my body? Pretty sure you haven’t. I was trying to share something kinda vulnerable and here you come being a smart ass. Mind your own business
I'm trying to respect my body by eating only when I'm hungry and only an amount that satiates me, not make me super full. It's hard. I love food for comfort. I love overeating. T_T Who else can relate?
Yesssss! I can totally relate and it got me to 240 lbs :( I've now restarted keto, after gaining back 10 more lbs than I had lost. I hope to stick with it and get down to 130 lbs. I know I will have loose skin, which I'm not thrilled about, but I really do want to get healthy again so I can enjoy hiking again.
Thanks for another great video! It really resonated with me when you mentioned about finding clothes that fit. I think the reason why I often opt for old and baggy clothes is that I am dissatisfied with my body. I think it's time to change my mindset.
Thanks so much Abbey for this video. I love all your Intuitive eating videos. I ditched dieting in March at the start of lockdown really to protect my mental health. I am happy to say I am still following my IE path and have made good progress. However, I decided to put the whole issue of gaining weight and worrying about size to one side and just focus on listening to my body’s hunger/satiety cues but now I realise I may have to just scrap the whole ‘10 pounds lighter’ fantasy. It’s hard but my mental health is more important. Thanks once again x
I'm not disagreeing with what you said, but there are people out there thinking that body positivity & HAES is glorifying obesity. I'm torn between these two worlds of dieting and body acceptance. I struggled all my life with weight. I was told to lose weight all my life in order to be healthy. Being ridiculed for my size leading me to dieting and fasting. And restrictions lead to the downfall of my mental health.
Can you link to the studies that affirm "set point theory"? I think it's pretty misleading to compare someone's hair color to the "natural shape and size" of their body. It's simply scientifically not comparable and I think you know that. Also is it true that you have never actually seen patients/clients as an RD, that you've always just made youtube videos? That concerns me because then you wouldn't have really seen clients in the context of their own health challenges and might be prone to projecting a lot of your own biases from your own past restrictive food issues (which can be a very different psychology than chronic overeating or bingeing). I agree that diet culture is not healthy but neither is being so fat that diabetes is basically an inevitability. I am clinically obese, saw (edit: it was a phone consultation) a HAES dietitian and she told me that my endo saying I have pre-diabetes is a "scare tactic." I am not kidding. This kind of mentality feels like a swing too far in the other direction. I kind of feel like somewhere in between hardcore calorie counting and intuitive (maybe you'll lose weight; maybe you won't! being 5'5 and 220 lbs is a-ok!) eating is most people's happy place. I actually do like a lot of your videos but sometimes it feels like you go a little too far and it doesn't actually seem scientifically-sound.
I'm just curious did this dietitian (you mentioned) see your glucose tolerance test, triglycerides, LDL, HDL analysis and blood pressure measurenments, or she/he just said this?
@@dmytrandr It was actually a phone consultation! I know I said "I saw" in my post but I was being general/sloppy. I have the lowest possible pre-diabetic measure... I think it's 5.6 or 5.7 or something? It's the lowest possible measurement according to my endo, that can be considered pre-diabetic. The dietitian said "Oh they changed the criteria recently. It's just a scare tactic." Also she herself was heavy so I had this weird feeling that her own issues influenced her perspective. Plamen Stoev You’re wasting more energy in your life by commenting nonsense where you could be doing something more valuable with your time. Looks like you can’t think for yourself and listen to a ‘role model’, that encourages trolling behaviour and name-calling. Yet Abbey’s the unprofessional one? Hypocrite.
Plamen Stoev she’s a registered dietician. If he’s into bodybuilding good for him but her videos are meant for the general public. It’s so sad to see he’s sent his subscribers here to spew vitriol. You guys are like rabid kpop fans tbh
Love this!! I bought 2 copies of your newest cookbook. I gave one to my daughter and kept one for myself. I am loving the recipes and how full and satisfied they are while making me feel positive about my body/health. Thank you Abbey
As to the clothing thing, yeah, totally agree, check out the thrift shops, comfortable is Way more important than the size on the label! I recently scored a pair of great quality jeans for $2.00, just because the size label was wrong, the sales person said they wouldn't fit "someone my size", they totally fit!
Abby, youre a very special person! This is the sort of message that may have changed the trajectory of unhealthy decisions I made in my younger years. Kudos to you and your message!
Plamen Stoev ‘Go to Greg doucette who also encourages trolling behaviour, stigmatism and name calling’. Seems like you Greg minions can’t think for yourselves, and do as he says. 😂🤦🏻♂️
Plamen Stoev What’re your exactly achieving in life by trolling the comment section? Surely there is something more valuable you could be doing with your time... Let me just point this out, Greg has on more than one occasion given harsh and unnecessary criticism, referenced someone as a ‘pig’, and contradicts himself and has little ownership of his own mistakes. Yet his followers all applauded him on this, though when he’s on the receiving end on criticisms, he can’t handle it and throws a tantrum and resorts in attacking and shouting the loudest, and his following throws a ‘fit’ over it. 😂 double standards and poor example that’s being set to his younger audiences...
@@ryanluttman1519 idk who this Greg person is but I'm definitely judging him based on his fans who are making all these hate comments 😂 I have never understood people like that
For all of Abbey's fans calling Greg's fans "trolls" you do realize she attacked Greg first right? She was the one with wrong information, and he simply corrected where she was wrong. Just saying.
G Mochrie she is giving out miss information , and her advices are garbage .... like she says calories in and calories out ain’t the biggest part of weight loss.. that like the most idiotic quote I have ever heard .. nobody can change the laws of thermodynamics .. and she can’t even handle the critique she gets.. she has even removed her like / dislike ratio lol that’s what you get for not doing any reasearch and just shouting out a bunch on nonsense.. no wonder so many are fat when they listen to a “dietitian” like this 😂
Abbey, you have mentioned probiotics and supplements in past videos, are these things that an average person should be taking? If so, how do you find the right one for yourself? I have looked for probiotics in the past, but there are so many!
Me, trying to pay attention to Abbey giving me intuitive eating advice, but completely unable to because I'm watching the reflection of the person in the tiles behind her
Thank you so much for your work! I can’t tell you enough times how helpful your videos are! I have never viewed things quite from the perspective of appreciating your body for what it does rather than for what it appears on the outside! You are truly an inspiration!
Hey abbey! i hope you see this when i was younger i used to have good bowel movement. as i got older 25 now, i became sensitive to some foods and lactose intolerant + colon to the point where i started hating food because of the impact it does to my stomach. even onions now bloat me (i sometimes wake up mid-night cuz of the bloating pain). i also have a diarrhea (sorry to write it out loud) that won't go. 3 times a week i get it, some days solid. i started eating fibers with digesting aid (pills form) it made it better kinda but i still get bloated. idk what to do, i thought of doing a test on what's not good for me or what im sensitive from. i also found out i have oral syndrome allergy (most fruits i like and veggies) swell my lips and itch my throat. i really want to know whats good for people with sensitive stomachs and things that could help improve and make the digestive system naturally stronger. also what do u think caused my stomach and digestive system to be weaker (ps;when i was younger i ate lots of fast foods and spicy stuff) if it helps. thanks!
"even onions now bloat me" my sister has IBS and is extremely sensitive to onions and garlic specifically. You might consider talking to your doctor about IBS and trying a low FODMAP diet to identify which foods are causing problems for you. Definitely do this under the supervision of a doctor/dietician though because it's a very complex and temporarily restrictive diet. It works kind of like introducing foods to babies. You've got to go pretty much one new food a week to really know what ones are hurting you. Once you know which types of foods cause you discomfort though, it's much more manageable. I cannot stress enough though how tricky it is and how necessary it is to talk to your doctor/dietician to make sure this is even the right path for you. If it's not IBS, it will absolutely not help you (and kind of messes with your head because of the whole "good food/bad food" situation) so definitely do not jump into it blind!!!
@@holly8445 thanks so much! this is a really interesting way. because i really don't know what's causing all of this and i want to be able to eat without digestive problems ;( hopefully it works!
Ok, question about the event thing: I’m having trouble fully embracing intuitive eating because I gained 20lbs after going from a job where am I walked a TON to quarantine on the couch, turning 30, and suddenly loving milkshakes. But the event I want to look good for is my own wedding in June. I found the perfect wedding dress that flatters my figure, buuuuuuut it’s sleeveless and my arms are kinda blobish. Also I’m carrying weight in my face and I don’t want to hate my wedding pictures for the rest of my life. I’ve never been much of a dieter and have leaned more towards overeating, but I’m really scared that intuitive eating will make me gain even more weight and I’ll look terrible on my wedding day. Any encouragement/advice?
YES! While he definitely knows his way around the kitchen, some of his info about labels is good but he has a rather "orthorexic" view of food--all sorts of talk about "poison", Troubling.
Are you able to do a video on teaching intuitive eating to children. My daughter is still so small, but I know that there are going to be a lot of external factors at play. How do I encourage her to have a good relationship with food and her body while she is being bombarded by all of the messaging that had such a negative impact on me?
@Plamen Stoev hey, why do you have to hate so much! When you don't like her then don't watch her. And this is her channel and her opinion. It's perfectly fine that not everyone has the same mindset. So don't hate her for her opinion!
So I work at a small food startup and I've been educating my peers about intuitive eating!!! we have messaging on our packaging that says "guilt free" and I found that problematic!! Your videos have been a resource for them to learn more about intuitive eating!
hey abbey, would you be able to discuss distinguishing between negative self talk and desire for athleticism? i’ve found that my body image has improved after shifting focus from the way it looks to how it performs & the cool things it can do, but sometimes go though crappy periods when performance plateaus. (i rock climb, so i might catch myself thinking “oh maybe if i was lighter i’d be able to hold on longer/moves would be easier”) this gets confusing sometimes as i don’t know how the two can coexist, would be great if you could help! love your videos :-)
They can’t according to Abbey. She shames fit people for trying to attain a certain physique - Abbey says she can’t understand the value in pursuing aesthetic or performance goals
@Karen Karen I hope you are having a nice day, my day has been pretty gloomy myself. I have never seen them, but I know your eyes are beautiful too. Take care.
I understand the concept, but I still don’t agree with your message that intuitive eating is right for everyone. The overweight people that I know aren’t just trying to decide whether or not they should have a donut once a week without feeling guilty about it. Of course, you should eat when you’re hungry and treat yourself occasionally. That’s not the real issue and I think you’re missing the point when people disagree with intuitive eating. My sisters and mom are overweight (one of them by 100+ pounds) and recently stayed with me. Not only did they eat 3 meals a day and snack in between, but they also proceeded to make a pizza at 10:30pm and follow it up with cinnamon buns. They were asking me how I maintain my weight and I told them that I eat healthier foods and I try not to eat when I’m not hungry. Their response was basically that they know they need to be healthier, but they simply don’t want to change anything. They don’t want to stop snacking all day & night. They don’t want to trade a bag of potato chips for carrots and hummus. I offered them almond milk for their coffee. Even though they said they liked it, they went to the store and bought sweetened condensed milk to use instead, because that’s just what they’re used to. We went for a 12 minute walk and it was a struggle for them. Hearing someone tell them that they should eat whatever they want, whenever they want, just gives them an excuse to keep going that way. They need to make better decisions, even if it’s not what they’re craving in the moment.
She puts a disclaimer about this at the beginning of literally every intuitive eating video and has a video dedicated to this exact topic: ruclips.net/video/oNHLgIJBOqY/видео.html
I really liked this video, you have good advice and suggestions. Practical and informative, spot on I would say. I'm looking forward to your next video in this series as well. I pushed myself to hard while working out and injured my shoulder and now I'm off working out for a week or two based on my doctors advice. So now I am looking for more gentle exercise to be kind and gentle with myself. Its what I needed to hear about respecting my body and the fitness level its at. thank you :)
What a great vid! I know the answers for my homework assignment: gorgeous legs, great b👀bs! I've been respecting my body by enjoying exercise for the sake of movement and not for an "end goal". I walk, jog, dance, do weights, or yoga TODAY because it feels good today. 😄 and sometimes what feels good is a stretch and a nap instead. LOL
@Karen Karen do you have a head injury? My comment was for Abbey Sharpe. You see I watched her video and chose to participate in her content. I added positivity and value to a community I subscribed to. You, however? Well you just keep on making your mom, or your kids or whoever has the pleasure of knowing you personally proud. 👍🏼 why don't you go show them your comments? Show them how cool you are, Karen.
@Karen Karen you don't follow logic very well. See what happens when you stop doing homework after the first grade? I'm sure those same ICU people wouldn't use their blessed energy to come to a YT channel they don't enjoy just to make nasty comments to people who weren't even talking to them. Remember this began with you engaging me so what part of your" I'm so glad to be alive and breathing and not in ICU" gratitude mantra did you recite before deciding to be nasty ? Know what? At this point, you've already implied that you have a first grade education at best, so my engaging with you is unfair and akin to "punching down. "
Hey Abbey! I know you talk about eating until you're satisfied, but I wanted to know if there are any physical signs that tell you you're overeating/undereating if you're not yet good at regulating the amount of food that makes you feel good while intuitive eating. There are youtube videos such as "7 signs you're eating too much" that I have found problematic and triggering while trying to find some tips about this issue, so some.info from.someone who talks about intuitive eating would be helpful. Thanks!
I weigh myself everyday because I think it’s interesting. I love my body and am in the best shape of my life. Tracking the scale (and my body) is fun and rewarding.
Frances S You’re not being very accepting of someone else’s life journey. It’s not my fault I used to be in a larger body at 210 and now I’m in a smaller body at 165. Oh wait, it kind of is 🤣💪💪💪💪
Loved this video! Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to make it for us 😊💓 I have a request: Can you make a video on intuitive eating (or just eating in general) for apple bodies?
My doctor turned me on to intuitive eating and I take heart in so much of what you said. I find my body and I do best with eating a ton of veggies with carbs and protein. But also it doesn’t make my perfectionist tendencies flare where if I ate “bad” at one meal I’d just say f it. Now I had a pop tart because it’s Covid and am still eating my beautiful healthy dinner instead of binging.
This video was very helpful and informative. I did not hear anything about intuitive eating on a meal plan though. That part is very important to me and several people I know. Can you do a video on that alone?
Maybe that would be a time when you work on all the other principles of intuitive eating for the time being? Reject diet culture, make peace with food, cope with your emotions with kindness, etc
Love the information insightful as always Just a suggestion, it would be great if you could do a video for providing an insight of a day in life working as a dietitian, for those wanting to work in the field (like me!) 😊

Sigh... *THANK YOU*
exactly!! everyone has functioning hunger and satiety cues and it’s just a matter of calming your mind enough to notice them and listen to them! people miss the most important point, which is that your body isn’t going to mislead you if you trust it. and it’s this idea that people who overeat or gain a lot of weight somehow don’t deserve compassion. miss me with that bullshit
This is such an amazing video. I’m 27 and have been trying since age 20 to lose 50 pounds only to continuously end up back at the same weight. I realized a few things:
1) just because I’m not 120 pounds that doesn’t mean I need to lose any weight.

To the reply guys - it's okay for people to be motivated in different ways. I'm glad Greg does it for you, he does not do it for many other people.

Excuse for over eating
I love this series! I started eating intuitively again last month and it changed my life over night. My weight has been completely stable, my lifts in the gym have gone up, and I feel much happier... and I wasn't even dieting before, I was "bulking".
Same :)
So glad!

Wow. Its so wonderful that youre doing this for yourself, that must be a huge struggle. I have such huge respect for it. What a fight!!
id be asking why you feel OCDabout calorie counting. it should just be a tool to assistwith learning portion sizes and eating in moderation, so that you learn yourbody and yourbody’s cues- you might need to get an assist with the OCD part to figure out the why you feel you must be perfect on your calories...just my 2cents...
Exposure therapy theory (which is not a therapy, don't get me wrong I'm all for therapy and maybe it's also a option to go in therapy for this?)
What I wanted to say is that exposure therapy helped for me with finding evidence for myself that I won't gain weight if I don't know my calories.

Thanks for sharing your experience
This is seriously the best video Ive seen you made. So informative, respectful, inclusive, supportive, kind. It honestly made my day 🙏🏼
So glad it was helpful

Thank you!!! So true about clothing. I am doing it slowly and it makes me feel better. I feel like hating myself when i wear too tight clothes.
This is a pretty normal human behaviour
@Gluttenousgainz Oh, and I thought Abbey was a narcissist and only told us what we want to hear. But now you agree with her. GTFO
Glad that was helpful
@Gluttenousgainz You sound like such a stable, mentally healthy person. 🙄
Scrolling through the comments, I just see a lot of angry people. Do you all need a hug? Maybe go outside for some fresh air or take a shower. It's a beautiful day.
Great video as always, Abbey!

Also, I admire that you always take into consideration your viewers who might be suffering or recovering from an eating disorder or disordered eating. Your channel has been very helpful. 💕
Thank you for being a proponent of intuitive eating in a sea of weight loss nutritionists. Intuitive eating changed my life and helped me recover from an eating disordered perpetuated by weight loss influencers like you know who. :)
Haha yesss

As someone who mostly supports Abby in the ongoing feud, I agree with you here
Thanks Abbey! 'Not comparing yourself to other's' really hits home for me. I wish I could go back and tell my younger self that its such a waste of time x x x
Me too! But at least we realise it now so we can better our relationship with ourselves xxx

Nice!
Thank you for sharing
That’s so awesome Revelin! Good luck and stay positive!
Thank you for sharing your experience
I really appreciate you Abby, as someone who struggles with disordered eating and some mood disorders, I appreciate the content you make! RUclips is full of misinformation and toxic diet culture, and your channel is truly a beacon of light ♥️
Thank you so much!
Becoming fitter and more radiant naturally comes with taking care of yourself and your health ❤
Thank you Abbey! Your content always makes my day! Thank you for your informative videos and kind delivery! You are amazing!
Thank you for helping me understand that there are things I can’t change but I can learn to be ok with, and I will work on loving the things I can do and my strong body allows me to do!♥️
I'm so glad it is helpful. Thanks for sharing!
@weinerdrizzle157 I think we would rather take information from Abbey Sharp. We stan her, she's a queen.
When I stopped weighting myself and making my own clothes gave me a better appreciation for my body just as it is.
Thanks for sharing your experience

Love your amazing advice abbey..! 😍👌👌
Such important messages for beating all the diet culture out there! 😓
These are my favourite videos. I am in a IE reading group and those videos are super reinforcing!
Love the new edition of the book as well :)
So glad it is helpful!
This video is exactly what so many people out there needed to hear! Thank you for covering this ❤️
So glad it is helpful ❤️
I didn't knew that it was possible to hide the like/dislike ratio. Thanks for teaching me something that I would have never learned watching Greg's videos.
Good point. He's not super tech savvy. I dont even think my Doctor would know how to do that if he wanted!
Do you have any particular suggestions?
Abbey Sharp I love watching Gwen Jorgensen! She used to be a triathlete, but now she runs for the Bowerman track club
Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for sharing!
I actually do like a lot of your videos but sometimes it feels like you go a little too far and it doesn't actually seem scientifically-sound.
i actually have a whole video coming with the science of set point theory/ settling point theory. there is a LOT to discuss so needs its own video.
She sees a lot of anorexic people apparently and seems very fixated on "anorexia is so horrible that overweight people should never think about dieting and should eat what they want to eat."

Hey abbey! i hope you see this
when i was younger i used to have good bowel movement. as i got older 25 now, i became sensitive to some foods and lactose intolerant + colon to the point where i started hating food because of the impact it does to my stomach. even onions now bloat me (i sometimes wake up mid-night cuz of the bloating pain). i also have a diarrhea (sorry to write it out loud) that won't go. 3 times a week i get it, some days solid. i started eating fibers with digesting aid (pills form) it made it better kinda but i still get bloated. idk what to do, i thought of doing a test on what's not good for me or what im sensitive from. i also found out i have oral syndrome allergy (most fruits i like and veggies) swell my lips and itch my throat. i really want to know whats good for people with sensitive stomachs and things that could help improve and make the digestive system naturally stronger. also what do u think caused my stomach and digestive system to be weaker (ps;when i was younger i ate lots of fast foods and spicy stuff) if it helps.
thanks!
I can put this topic on the list to discuss in a video

Ok, question about the event thing:
I’m having trouble fully embracing intuitive eating because I gained 20lbs after going from a job where am I walked a TON to quarantine on the couch, turning 30, and suddenly loving milkshakes.
Youre gonna look absolutely beautiful on your wedding ♥

(i rock climb, so i might catch myself thinking “oh maybe if i was lighter i’d be able to hold on longer/moves would be easier”) this gets confusing sometimes as i don’t know how the two can coexist, would be great if you could help! love your videos :-)
They can’t according to Abbey. She shames fit people for trying to attain a certain physique - Abbey says she can’t understand the value in pursuing aesthetic or performance goals
@@am1275 Greg supporters are so annoying. I like the guy but you are speaking in generalities. C'mon
Thanks for the suggestion!
I love my blue eyes, and the way my body can dance!
😊👍
@Karen Karen I hope you are having a nice day, my day has been pretty gloomy myself. I have never seen them, but I know your eyes are beautiful too. Take care.
@Nathan Partin Have a good day brother, I hope you're doing well!
Great video! Much needed for me and a ton of other people (I’m sure) to hear
This needs more likes. I'm was here to shit on Abbey but it looks like there are some like minded people here.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video thank you Abbey!
@weinerdrizzle157 haha troll.
😊👍
@weinerdrizzle157 if Greg's approach works for you that's great, I get more out of Abbey's content myself.
LOL
Agree, same here..! 😁
Sounds so good! 🤗😘👌
Thanks for sharing!
@Karen Karen yaaaaay!
This video came at the perfect time for me. Thank you so much for the reminder!
So glad!
@Nathan Partin What the hell is your problem, dude?
Thanks!
I can put this topic on the list to discuss in a video
@@AbbeysKitchen Thanks! ☺
Can you do a video for breastfeeding mothers? Thanks! I love this video, BTW
Thanks for the suggestion!
I weigh myself everyday because I think it’s interesting. I love my body and am in the best shape of my life. Tracking the scale (and my body) is fun and rewarding.
Glad that works for you
Ugh
Frances S You’re not being very accepting of someone else’s life journey. It’s not my fault I used to be in a larger body at 210 and now I’m in a smaller body at 165. Oh wait, it kind of is 🤣💪💪💪💪
Okay so let's do this. I like the overall look of my face. I like that I have distinctive features. I like my (funnily onesided) dimple.
Loved this video! Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to make it for us 😊💓
I have a request:
Can you make a video on intuitive eating (or just eating in general) for apple bodies?
Thanks for the suggestion
Another "real comment" hahaha
My doctor turned me on to intuitive eating and I take heart in so much of what you said. I find my body and I do best with eating a ton of veggies with carbs and protein. But also it doesn’t make my perfectionist tendencies flare where if I ate “bad” at one meal I’d just say f it. Now I had a pop tart because it’s Covid and am still eating my beautiful healthy dinner instead of binging.
👏 YES
Glad that is working for you!
Love the information insightful as always
Just a suggestion, it would be great if you could do a video for providing an insight of a day in life working as a dietitian, for those wanting to work in the field (like me!) 😊
I second this! I want to become a RD as well 💫
Thanks for the suggestion!
Loved this video, Abbey, you are great!
Thanks Abbey! You are really sharp!
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you.
So glad it is helpful
Research actually shows that size of body is mainly down to socioeconomic status.
Very interesting like to dislike after being posted only an hour long! 200 likes to 100ish down.
It’s just Greg trolls! Nothing more than that. People with way too much time on their hands
No Abbey it is not ‘just Greg trolls’ - shows how much of a narcissist you are if you don’t believe that people not affiliated with Greg might dislike your content. I don’t watch Greg but I’m sick of you telling people only what they want to be told.
Abbey Sharp nobody is trolling haha, your content is just very poorly made
@@AbbeysKitchen it's Greg trolls and keep doing you Abbey! For some reason these people are commenting on a video they apparently hate so much 🤦♀️No one is forcing you to watch this.
@@AbbeysKitchen Time that you did not take to do you homework and do a proper research, sad
My brain goes like this..
Positive self talk: I have a nice booty
Negative self talk: ya but your lower tummy is bloated
Positive self talk: I toned my abs so much these past few months!
Negative self talk: you’re starting to lose your booty though
Both your booty and your lower tummy are 🔥 and don’t you forget it.
Jillian Wickham thanks 😅 I’ll try telling myself that.. sometimes when I feel rly shitty about something regarding my appearance I just try to remind myself that the way I look is probably the least interesting thing about me. I heard a RUclipsr say that and it was a relief to think that way (not that I always think that way but I try)
i love this series! thanks abbey
❤️❤️
Thank you Abbey ❤️ I really appreciate you and everything you do x
❤️❤️
Abbey Sharp research harder than last time
