My most important ADHD tip: Stock your home generously with healthy food that has a long shelf life. You will feel rich and cared for with such an abundance of nutrition available to you. Your shopping list: - canned veggies especially loads of tomatocubes - canned beans, different types - nuts, different types, 100 percent peanut butter - cacao and cacao nibs - lentils - wholegrain cereal, wholegrain crackers, breadsticks, etc - wholegrain pasta - wholegrain vacuum sealed part-baked bread - frozen veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, peas, green beans, mixed veggies, etc.) - frozen fuit (mango, cherries, blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, etc) - spices (all the spices you might need) - stock cubes and a few staple sauces like soy sauce, apple vinegar, balsamico vinegar and spicy shit - hard cheese, eggs, potatoes and apples have a month of shelf life too. You can keep cheese in the freezer. It might seem expensive to buy all this, but going to the supermarket often and do impulse buying every time is more expensive. 2 extremely low executive function recipes: - can of chopped tomatoes, can of beans, 3 eggs. This makes an excellent shakshuka. Even more delicious: add parmesan and garlic. - lentils, concentrated tomato paste and stock cube turns into a nutritious soup Last tip: don't own more than four plates, four bowls and three pans, so you won't be able to let them take over your kitchen counter
As someone with both ADD and autism diagnoses: HELL YES to preparing seperate meal elements and putting them in the fridge or freezer for later. Yesterday I transferred two servings of spelt berries and black lentils to the fridge for use in lunches and dinners, and in the freezer is still three big broth jars full of lentil curry soup for days where I just can't. Or when it's just cold. I've also developed an unholy love of tempeh, got a whole block's worth that I cooked with a versatile spice blend in the freezer, and I always cook multiple servings of legume (chickpeas, beans) to freeze for future use. It's a really good habit that can save your dinner and your sanity.
Could you please do a video about diabetes? I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and even though I grew in a family with many diabetics so I was more aware, I feel like it would be really helpful for the public to know. Love this video and all of your video, you're doing an amazing work with your channel.
I try and buy food produce I know either keep for a minimum of a week without rotting OR that I know from regular experience that I finish quickly. I thoroughly check freshness when I pick things out and try and buy stuff with far out expiry dates and that are more unripe. This helps me to have flexibility on days where I have a new food aversion, am low on spoons, or simply forget the I owned that food. Because once it begins to go bad I get triggered by the smell and it can put me off that food for weeks. My faves are cucumbers, carrots, cherry tomatoes, snap/snow peas, unripe avocados and bananas, firm apples, pepperoni sticks/sausage, and frozen produce for things like berries. I try and mix it up a decent amount, but having those go-to’s I know I can turn to reduce my food anxiety and drive me to eat more produce and create less food waste.
A lot of this makes total sense. Anecdotal... My youngest brother has ADHD. He is also severely asthmatic, with myriad allergies. Food dyes are hell on him. Detergents, foods and additives, soaps, fragrance... Ugh. He's over 40, and still takes medicine to maintain control of his own brain. I also have a milder form of ADHD. Hyper focus is a major struggle. I also have health issues that have necessitated moving closer to a keto diet. Man, this stuff is hard. Thank you for bringing attention to all of these things. ❤️
Me neither, TTFL, growing up in such a bread and cheese culture would have been hell. While I favor whole, unprocessed grains over flour-based foods, and limit dairy for environmental reasons (plenty of plant-based calcium, though), a bit of goat cheese on a dense slice of sourdough is a pleasure I would hate to develop some kind of intolerance to. Also, Abbey, 3:40 THANK YOU for leading with this.
My husband is undiagnosed but we're 99% certain he is autistic (his nephew was diagnosed recently and they are pretty much identical in their behaviours and triggers). Some hacks that have helped us. He had seriously sensory issues around food as a child, but it also doesn't help that his mother comes from the generation and region where everything had to be massively overcooked to avoid food-borne illnesses. He thought he hated all vegetables because every veg he tried was always cooked until it became a greyish mush. Gently encouraging him to try these foods prepped in different ways has been transformative - steaming or roasting veg instead of boiling into submission made a huge difference. I would often make something for myself and ask if he wanted to try a bit, rather than making it for him with the expectation he would eat it, so he didn't feel pressured. He also struggles with planning meals because he gets overwhelmed. If i ask him to decide what we're having tonight, he'll universally fall back on his safe foods - pizza and fries- which is fine occasionally but not great for variety. When I plan our meals for the week now I suggest a base ingredient and he helps construct something around that - so I'll say I fancy something with noodles, and he'll help pick a protein source and some veg, or I'll say we're having pasta and he'll pick a sauce from our recipe book. It limits the range of options available and makes it easier for him to decide without getting stressed out
Just want to jump in and thank you. I have dealt with weight issues my entire life, even though I was in sports and a dancer in my youth, and had gastric bypass many years ago. Your hunger crunching combos and information have been so helpful to me the last couple of years.
Last month I ate “savory cereal” (crumpled up quest protein chips mixed in a bowl of cottage cheese) for dinner for about 2 weeks straight 😬 Had to force myself to break that expensive streak.
Vitamin D especially if you live anywhere in the world north of San Francisco! Outside of summer time, the UV you get from the sun is too low to provide any amounts of vitamin d absorption even if you’re outside for hours on end. Spring, fall, winter (and summer if you’re a homebody) vitamin D is a must
I have autism and I just can't eat ultra processed or super sugary foods in moderation. It triggers binges and it takes a long time for me to stop the cravings. Avoiding it is easier than eating it in moderation for me, it took years for me to figure this out. I also have ibs symptoms. I'm lucky to be able to afford high quality meats, fresh fruits and vegetables but I do find it difficult to eat a variety of foods, especially minimally processed foods. I recently started taking antidepressants (after not wanting to try meds for a long time) and it has helped me not obsess over food. I haven't binged since I started them :) Meal prepping has also been great. I will say I do agree with another comment on here, the title is super distasteful! There is so much misinformation spread about autism and these clickbait titles certainly don't help.
I wish you brought up arfid and such earlier in this. Especially ND kids are going to struggle so hard to cut out these foods much as it might be best to do so.
Thank you, Abbey, for sharing this information with us. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and it has been such a challenge to know what may trigger certain behaviors and what might actually help keep me focused. It’s really a friken journey in a world that demands so much from us to just survive.
I definitely agree with the need for easy snacks!! If I don't have easy/ simple snacks available and I need to cook something, I will often get overwhelmed and end up just not eating
When has RFK ever said that autism can be cured with diet? He has talked about how the US has all sorts of additives we don't have here in Europe, but I never heard him talk about diets curing autism.
It is so hard negotiating food and nutrition as a neurodivergent person, especially when you have additional health concerns as well. I'm autistic and ADHD, and also have endometriosis which affects my digestion, and I have a history of EDs and severe mental illness. The constant battle of knowing what foods I *should* be eating, but also battling chronic pain and lacking the energy to prepare nutritious food. It's a constant battle 😞
I started making sure my son had good amounts of protein in his breakfast (adding greek yogurt, hemp hearts etc) and I SWEAR there's so much improvement compared to days where we have a fun breakfast that doesn't have as much protein in it. I feel like ADHD medication has changed my son's life. Stimulants he had way too many negative side effects, but we found a nonstimulant and his quality of life is massively improved! That's basically the same one a dietician recommended for my kids and they HAAATE the taste!
before I watch I want to see if I can guess what her advice will be: - eat foods that don't take too much executive function to prepare - eat foods that are fun to you - eat foods that you like the texture of - eat hunger crushing combo's Now I'll press play
Hi Abby!!!! This speaks to my whole neuro-spicy soul!!! I followed your advice and made a tomato, cottage cheese, and black bean soup - because I needed to find a way to add protein and fiber to the tomato soup that I cannot stop eating (going on three months now)
Am I the only one who struggel to eat the same thing twice?😅 Its like if i have eaten the meal once recently, my brain think we ticked the box and i have to push myself to eat it again. Meal prepping doesn't work for me, I need the food to feel new and exciting otherwise i undereat and then stuff my face in candy 🙈
A.d.h.d.s could also feel bored while eating and even if not full, just decide to not eat 'cause of boredom Or being too lazy to eat Or chasing a high from certain products, just for it to last several days and then you again get bored These behaviours also overlap with depression About tips that helped me, the thing with routine has a very soothing effect on me so when I can stick to a routine, I use Saturday for grocery shopping and Sunday for one pot large meal for several days in the week. It's also how things are usually done in my country (E. Europe/ Balkan) so one pot meals that you eat for several days. So it can be 2 types of one pot meals and you vary between them
I’m so glad I’m not one of the ones that react to gluten or dairy, that would so severely limit my already limited diet that I’d be way way malnourished (and not just a little like I am now) 😅
allowing myself to eat bread without feeling guilty helped me. For years bread was a No and considered unhealthy and fattening... Im buying a good sauerdough and just eat it sweet or savery if I am too starved to cook a meal.
My husband has ADHD. I have AuDHD. We have a bunch of nuerospicy kids. Over half of us have milk/CMPA. One is extremely intolerant of wheat/gluten. At least half of us are intolerant of tomato. Some of us are sensitive to eggs and mildly to soy. And I'm starting suspect corn intolerance in myself. I'm leaning towards incorperating mostly whole30/Paleo. While also still incoperating things I know are safe, like beans and nuts. Or allergy safe alternatives, despite them being processed.
My biggest thing was ensure meal shakes. My least favorite symptom of my ADHD is my executive dysfunction disorder that comes along with it. They definitely are not the tastiest drink on the planet, and sometimes sit like a rock in my stomach. I also don't try to do it regularly, but what I love about the insure drinks is that if you have them in the fridge, you can drink them straight out of the bottle And there's no prep, waste, and they're only like 12 oz so you really can get them down in four big bulbs. Again, this is something I'd most likely expect to be needed in moderation, but it has everything that I need in that moment
Thanks for the content Abbey, really helpful but the title is quite inflammatory and upsetting, as a fellow Neurodivergent person. It would be great if you could change it to something more neuro-affirming.
I also was diagnosed with impulsive hyperactive ADHD as well at age 37. It has been quite the journey. I had a bad injury and now I suffer from a chronic pain disorder and chronic migraines. My old job I could be all over the place and I thrived (I think that’s how I went so long not knowing). Now I have this brain that is constantly going and my body cannot keep up. 😞 The struggle is real.
Thanks for the feedback! Have updated! I was trying to debunk this common offensive myth, did not mean to further offend (I’m obv on the same annoyed team).
Abbey could you please do a "20 grams of protein" video? As in what the portion sizes of a 20g protein serve would roughly look like so that I don't have to weigh or calculate what I eat? For example back in the day they used to say a palm sized amount of certain things. It would be handy to have a cheat sheet for this
Gym rat of 7 years with education on nutrition here. 20g of protein changes not just between meats, and cuts of meats, but between animals themselves. Buying beef with new world and beef from countdown will have different protein levels of up to 5 grams. Every animal is different, every crop harvest is different, but there’s rough average calculators online, just give or take a few grams. Also be very careful with how much protein you eat, your body physically cannot process 20g of protein in one meal, and isn’t good for you in the long term so aim for 15g per meal give or take! I know I’m not abbey but I hope it helps
As someone who is allergic to fish oil, It is very difficult getting enough omega when you have fish & nut allergies so frustrating. And vegetable based omega is so expensive.
@@ronnie-lynn I bet. I don’t eat fish either (vegetarian). My neurologist recommended some good quality products that are on the pricier side but I can’t … they both taste so bad and it doesn’t go away. I eat nuts and such but was told that wasn’t enough (by people I’m pretty sure don’t just want to sell me supplements).
Barleans Omega-3 smoothie is pretty darn awesome. It tastes like creamsicle or key lime pie, not fish. It's not cheap, about $25 a month, but worth it if you can't cope with regular Omega-3 supplements.
I’ve been diagnosed with autism - I eat great, for the last seven months I’ve eaten cauliflower cheese, granola bars, white chocolate and ice cream exclusively. I’ve been trying to add yogurt but it’s gross, even if I put just a bit of it on ice cream.
I think "rage bait" titles on good, educational content can sometimes be a good thing because the people who click on it are often exactly the people who need to see it
This is not good. People will see the title, not dedicate 30 minutes of their lives to it, and post online “SEE? SEE? I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG!! BACK IN MY DAY NOBODY WAS DISABLED THIS PROVES IT” And then we’re back to square fucking one. I am a disability advocate and this is absolutely harmful and ridiculous to do to disabled people who already face enough ableism about the validity of their disabilities without clickbait titles on videos that the tArGeT aUdIeNcE will not fuckin watch. Disgraceful.
Unfortunately yes this is kinda what creators are taught is best practice even if it pisses ppl off but I did change it to support for fellow neurospicies
Hey Abbey! I’ve been reading about how vitamin C can inhibit stimulant medication absorption, so I was wondering if you could make a video about breakfast ideas that have enough protein for our adhd medication to work properly, but not so much vitamin c that I’m messing with our meds? Or am I thinking about this too much and it’s not that important? 😅 Have a great day!
It isn't going to effect the absorption that much. If you're *that* concerned, wait 15 - 30 mins between taking meds N eating/drinking anything else. Take meds a a full glass of water right when you wake up then by the time you prep your food they should be absorbed plenty. Getting enough vit c is more important than avoiding it! (I had scurvy so vit c is very important to me now lol)
Thanks for the repeated perspective of how the scientific method works (comparing multiple studies for replication). I would only have guessed the issues with sensory stuff and texture, but I suppose that's just due to how many people I know
Do you have a video on how to talk to your doctor about your initial diagnosis? Whenever I go to the doctor, which is rare, I'm like "I'm good, everything is fine" 😅🔥.... I dont even know where I'd begin 😂 I've been living this way my whole life, but the older you get, it's harder to mask....you drain very easily.
Can you either make a video or link one that talks about afhd and dopamine abnormalities? Personally I have adhd and I can eat a whole cake and only feel like it was over the top, but then to find more sweets. I am mostly stuck in between avoiding sweets, as in not having it in the house. Or eating it all.
Hi I've been subscribed you for a while this one is a reason why I'm unsubscribing it's the way that you chose to word the title of the video as someone who is undiagnosed and trying to find someone to do testing which is extremely hard and I've been having to deal with that my entire life and a lot of my family is actually undiagnosed and only some people are diagnosed with it and have it severely the fact that you chose this as a blanket statement when you wanted to clickbait people is extremely insulting, demeaning, and belittling to an actual serious issue that goes undiagnosed in so many people for almost an entire lifetime if not their entire life and the fact that you chose to do that. As someone in your position with your platform and what you talk about which is kind of a serious topic you feel like you would know to not word things that way, and no you don't get it because you eat processed food that's the equivalent to saying vaccines cause autism which it's been proven that they don't it's extremely insulting and it's like saying if you look at the color green on Wednesdays you're going to get fat which is not true you get it based on genetics and environment also known as nature and nurture internal and external factors they all play a roll in your early development and how you turn out as an individual and with as many things we have going on in the world right now the fact that you still choose to clickbait over something that you could have easily looked up and know that it was not okay to joke about and yet didn't and the fact that all of your sources for your research are listed in the very bottom of your description box underneath all of your links to your own personal things and affiliate links and sponsors and other social media platforms says a lot to how you really wanted to approach this. "So thank you for approaching this in a decent and well-meaning way" and I will no longer be watching any of your videos I will be blocking your channel thank you have a good day❤
Adding some spaces, like making this comment into paragraphs would make it a lot easier to read. I lost my way about halfway through and couldn’t find my way back to finish.
@nothingnothing9470 no I just don't appreciate the way that she titled the video to make it clickbait seen as a lot of people who clicked on this seemed like they also watch her other videos too
@nothingnothing9470 there's a lot of other comments on here too that are saying pretty much the same thing just in a nicer roundabout kind of way like it didn't seem like she really needed to clickbait to get views seen as a lot of her videos already get views and a lot of comments and likes and shares anyway I know because I usually watch her videos and I scroll in the comments and there's some really good advice in there it's just the way that she titled this one and kind of went about making this video it just didn't seem appropriate sometimes the wording on her videos just isn't the best and that's really where I have a complaint with also not everyone who has a legitimate complaint about something is a Karen it just seems like you were upset that I commented something and voice my opinion so you felt like you had to voice yours which I don't mind I'm just a little concerned that you think anyone who mentions how they actually are feeling towards something is a Karen it's kind of a pretty negative and abysmal outlook to have on things in a broader sense and I kind of hope that you figure it out have a great day tho!❤️
@@elezzadavi-d9699 So far, I've found like 3 comments mentioning the clickbait. But the video also was published like 2 hours ago, so we'll see. I'm also not upset, I was just in the mood to make a snarky remark
You are most welcome, thank you for the support! And I've done a video on what to eat on your period that you can check out here: ruclips.net/video/xFJo3wZ7AW4/видео.html

Booked a doctor's appointment to see if I have ADHD. My son has it severe and I relate to his struggles too much LOL
Thank you so much for this one! So helpful. Putting in my request for a diet recommendation for fibromyalgia ! Pretty please 😍
Can you PRETTY PLEASE do a video on diabetes?🙏
Done! ✅ didn’t mean to offend - meant to be tackling this obviously misinformed myth with science
What was the initial title?
@@mariannescheesepulls is your diet causing adhd or autism
@@AbbeysKitchen thanks so much.
Neuro affirming? Y'all really make up words.
Speaking As Someone With Autism, My Diet Slightly Balanced, Compared To My Childhood, Diets Impacted By Brain Issues Is Bunk.
Keep at it love, you've got this!!
13:30 yes I find it makes it even harden when someone is asking me what I want to eat or where I want to go for dinner
Any recommendations for high quality omega 3 supplements? Or any to avoid?
Yikes. Change the title. The rage bait is extremely disappointing.
I agree. There is already too much misinformation out there, this is just adding to that
Thanks for the feedback! Have updated! I was trying to debunk this common offensive myth, did not mean to further offend (I’m obv on the same annoyed team).
Thank you! Stupid yt getting rid of dislikes is annoying
@@SaintShionwhat the title before?
What was the title before?
FINALLY THANK YOU SO MUCH 🫶🏻
You are most welcome!
Very happy you changed the title, abbey!
Love this idea
What Omega3 isn’t disgusting? 😢 Both fish oil and algae oil make me want to puke. And whenever I take it the taste lingers for hours 🤮
I freeze my omega 3 pills. Cant tolerate the fishy aftertaste otherwise, but when the pills are frozen, I don't get the aftertaste at all!
BACK IN MY DAY NOBODY WAS DISABLED THIS PROVES IT”
And then we’re back to square fucking one.
I dont even know where I'd begin 😂
I've been living this way my whole life, but the older you get, it's harder to mask....you drain very easily.
I’ve never clicked so fast!
I never realized dairy could impact my ADHD.
Feels like someone hasn't spoken to a manager in a while, Karen
This video was a delight! A huge win for me has been packing an extra protein snack for my day (turkey sausage and walnuts)!
That is awesome!
Thank you for the amazing content! Is there any way you could share nutrition tips for getting your period back? Have a good day🥰
You are most welcome, thank you for the support! And I've done a video on what to eat on your period that you can check out here: ruclips.net/video/xFJo3wZ7AW4/видео.html

Hi Abbey I am autistic and I find title/tn very unconfortable especially since I know you are not against neurodivergencies (how could anyone be btw)
