In 2023, as a new mom, I learned I can fit sewing into much smaller chunks of time than I’d previously thought. I was worried I wouldn’t have time for all of my hobbies, when really I just have to be more intentional with my time! Another great 2023 discovery was your channel :)
This is great!! As a mom of 2, I've learned that I often don't get to finish things in the amount of time I'm used to having all by myself. Hope you have a great day!!
@emmychum2121 @@MichelleMonsteraPreach! I just had my third and I'm learning more and more about time management and to just be okay with things taking a little longer and not being able to devote large chunks of time all at once. Still dealing with Mom guilt when I try. 😅 But I just watched another one of Carly's videos earlier where she mentioned she worked for an hour every day on a patchwork. Such a simple concept but what an earth shattering idea. 😆 Why didn't I think of that??
Hi to all my favourite people !!!! I hope you enjoy the video & as always, let me know how your projects are coming along! I’m working on a bobble stitch cardigan for my Patreon pattern breakdown post for this month!! I haven’t made on for ages so it’s been so nice 💖 Take care & see you in the comments!
I finally taught myself how to do Tunisian crochet in 2023. And I learned that careful unpicking can save you heaps of headaches further down the line. I think your shirred top is adorable. It suits you so well and the arm band detail is perfect.
You are so right, I am very nitpicky when I sew my clothes 🙈 I loved seeing the pattern pieces, especially since I self draft most of my clothes, it's so helpful to see shapes and how they work when sewn up. 2023 was a year of sewing my wardrobe, only buying a small handful of rtw clothes, and making colourful clothes that make me happy, even if they look "kooky" or "unflattering". Also learning how to sharpen my scissors with a kitchen steel was a game changer 🙌😄
Omg. Someone else said it! Everytime I sew something I think how it's not perfect but then take a step back and ask myself, "Do you have something in your closet you purchased that fits perfectly around the bust? That molds to my body?" Hell no. We are such harsh credits towards ourselves! I just found you on RUclips. I love love love your vibes and work, my curly haired sister. Hope we can be friends. :,) Cheers! -RAZ
I learned that when making darts, start stitching at the wide end but when you get to the point, don't back stitch. Just sew straight off the fabric and cut the threads a few inches long, then tie them in a double knot. Much less bulk at that point! (and easier to unpick if you have to XD)
I think I learned going the extra mile makes the results go from 5/10 to 40/10 crisp ironing and measuring twice elevates your garment! I started loving the things I made even more !
I love that you did the pattern breakdown!! I too love learning how things are constructed. Sometimes I see a piece and I don't necessarily make it for myself, but the construction looks interesting, and I'll just want to see the pattern to learn how it's constructed 😝💓
I feel your commitment to positivity when you make mistakes! Totally agree that they are all learning opportunities. I screwed up some pretty pricey fabric making something for my partner's granny, but have managed to re-cut the pieces to make little pleated peplum puff sleeve top for myself. Fit isn't perfect, but it's my first project using an overlocker - definitely my game changer for 2023!! Just have the zipper to put in. I'm not scared at all ...
I got into crochet last year and I love it. I dabble in a ton of hobbies but what made a huge difference and helped crochet to stick around as a hobby: i learned to enjoy crocheting while I was learning it.. I was frustrated by learning patterns, so I crocheted different stitches without a pattern and just enjoyed the rhythm of crocheting. It took a lot of pressure off of me to not make anything
i learned smocking as a skill, but i realized how excited i am to make plushies! the pattern making to making the stuffing with sewing scraps, i have fallen in love with that process
Your blouse is stunning! I think you people in the UK are much better at sewing than we here in the US. I'm learning how to make my own patterns. I want to make some shorts with like seashells or anchors and I might use a thicker fabric.
I learned hand embroidery in 2023 and taught my 21 year old son, I get my threads in bundles from eBay second hand so it’s much cheaper and I can have lots of colour variations xx
I use simple art pencils in various colors. They wash out. What I've found that works for me over the decades. Plus they are cheaper too. I only made one thing in 2023. It's been a very rough three years of illness and severe pain. I can sit up at the table for up to two hours before needing to rest. Last fall I could only do 15 minutes at a time.
What a beautiful result! Thank you for sharing! This week I am working on a toile/mock up of N6594 with hopes of making it a birthday dress for myself in a few weeks time.
I just finished a new project right after Christmas and the one thing I learned was about finishing my seams. I've always either gone for a full French seam (which can be exhausting) or simply pressing the raw edges down. For my last project, I overlocked all of the seams and sewed them flat and it looks and feels so nice! I always worried it wouldn't look very professional but it looks just like something you get from the store.
I also learned from this project that making stuff in my style is exactly what I've been missing. I've been so bored with my wardrobe and the excitement from putting something on that feels so ME is the best feeling ever. (It's a quilted jacket made from a quilt with cats in bowties lol)
I love how simple and versatile the top is while still having interesting little details! The little buttons down the back and the pleats/darts on the waist! So cute! This week, I'm working on a corset-style top (self-drafted) in light denim with a little mushroom embroidery! It's for a friend who has been patiently waiting for me to get through the holidays to make this for her. Since she's been so patient I'm also making a simple little matching mini skirt 😅
Just finished making a gardening apron and a gardening bag for a friend who was retiring. I used a mixture of sunflower fabric, denim, and Upholstery cotton duck- It turned out really cute. Love your style and your videos!💖💗
I saw a hack for gathering where you set your stitch length super long and then set your tension super super high and it gathers the fabric for you and it's made me love gathering! I used to dread it so much but this has worked really well for me and I haven't had any issues with thread breaking.
2023 was a really strong learning year for me! I learnt 1) I looove to make coats 2) I looove reusing scrap fabric for detail work, mocking up a pattern or even interfacing and 3) I'm getting better and better at fitting clothes to my rather abnormal body type! I also sewed with a lot of fabrics I hadn't tried out before. 🎉 EDIT: I just finished a new maxi skirt and am now gathering materials for a plush toy for my best friend's future newborn!
That blouse is gorgeous! It’s so nice you can bring a vintage pattern back to life from your grandma’s collection. Sewing goal for this week is to finish a dress I started out of a coral-pink bamboo jersey material.
love your channel! I learned a lot of sewing lessons in 2023 including that making mockups *actually* matters! I also dabbled in hand embroidering 3D flowers - which I'd put off for a while but was amazed that it was actually pretty straightforward (and very fun!) xx
"Something you can watch while you eat your breakfast," ... half eaten egg sandwich in my hand 😅 I'm really loving your videos lately, your process and chatting has helped demystify sewing and reminded me its ok to just start over and try again ❤
When you try it on, it looks like the slope of the shoulder is too much. You might need to modify it on the pattern so that it is a little less sloped. It's a very cute top.
You are never boring! 💕 What a beautiful blouse! Well done! I really admire your persistence. 👍🏻 I’m making a denim phone bag for my daughter, with room for makeup too. 💄 Hugs from Deb xx 🤗
I suspect the slight wrinkles or bunching around the collar might be from the bias binding being q little tight? I am sewing some doll clothing orders taken at the end of last year among a much of other things 😅
me acculy not buy a top either if darts not sit decent enoth as I would nitpick myself. usally nevey buy anything with darts just becouse shop clots realy allow bigger ladies in the cloths so streach from store rest me sew if not a more flowy top that not have darts or more oversized fits but if dart sit to high or low it don´t look good so not buy it

@@capricespieces oh my goodness now I'm going to make it a goal to spend xx amount of time on my hobbies every day!!🤓
I love the shirred top you are wearing at the beginning xx
Yes, loving this top in the video. Did you make it? Pattern???

Pro tip: use the friction erasable pens. They are removed with heat.
They can be a good option, but unfortunately the ink will reappear if it gets cold.
I love the Frixion pens and markers. I’ve never had a problem with them.

I love that you described the pattern after you laid it down on the fabric. That was so helpful!
Loving how your green Damsel top from Roberts-Wood turned out.
I crochet and watch you. I have been enjoying watching you and you have me wanting to do some sewing projects I've been putting off.

oh yay! so do I! oh for sure - it's just so fascinating to see how things are made!!
I knit a pair of socks for hubby. Now I’m using leftover yarn plus another yarn to make striped socks for me.
I love your videos.

Am working on the Roberts-Wood bow patchwork trouser pattern - making shorts length in cotton.
What a beautiful result! Thank you for sharing! This week I am working on a toile/mock up of N6594 with hopes of making it a birthday dress for myself in a few weeks time.
Working on some jeans this week finishing the pattern !
Almost completed a robe/housecoat from 2 thrifted quilts! Favorite thing ever :)

Showing the pattern definitely wasn't boring! I am a draft my own patterns so that was incredibly helpful!!
This year I learned how to draft my block patterns and manipulate them for what I want. I learned everything I know from The Closet Historian

I'll have to try it. Thanks!😊
i LOOOOOOVe that you shared the details of the pattern pieces!!! thanks💚💚
PS: your enthusiasm for notches might have just convinced me to strart using them!!!😂😂

I use the bobbin case from a singer sewing machine on an IKEA sewing machine.

Have you thought about making bloomers in all different lengths & designs. ?
love it! I could see Harry Styles loving this :) you are such an amazing teacher too

Learn to do “tailor’s tacks” for darts! Your blouse is just gorgeous!🖤
You should put patches or do some embroidery over the stains
GOOD IDEA!!
Have you tried the pilot frixion pens? They're really good and easy to erase with iron
your top is gorgeous!! did you make it ? 🥰
So cute. Now make the red dress on the pattern. Please 😊
Premium breakfast entertainment 👌
It's beautiful ❤️
glad im not the only one that jams to 1975 while sewing
I'm making a blue bag out of corduroy with fake pearl beads on it in hope to sell it in my small business little shop :)
I moved recently so I'm currently still working on setting up my sewing area. But I'm itching to sew so bad.
Very pretty. I would wear it with boots.
Cute shirt!
I suspect the slight wrinkles or bunching around the collar might be from the bias binding being q little tight? I am sewing some doll clothing orders taken at the end of last year among a much of other things 😅
Your iron reminds me of something from Star Wars - the breathing aparatus the Tie fighter pilots use.😂
Is that pattern available anywhere?
in 2023 i went from no garments to 5 garments sewn , working on my first dress currently
❤
What was the pattern number?
Is it just me or does anyone else hate sewing button holes on the heavy duty singer?? I don't have any trouble on any other machine lmao
me acculy not buy a top either if darts not sit decent enoth as I would nitpick myself. usally nevey buy anything with darts just becouse shop clots realy allow bigger ladies in the cloths so streach from store rest me sew if not a more flowy top that not have darts or more oversized fits but if dart sit to high or low it don´t look good so not buy it
