    Good morning from Germany, use a stretchy zigzag stitch for the red dress. This way the seams can stretch with the fabric.

      I was going to suggest a thin strip of interfacing (medium weight) to iron on the back of both sides of the fabric where you sew the seams. I've had issues like this and it fixed it.

      If she was using a straight stitch and that was the issue that would break my heart because she’s got a multi-thousand dollar sewing machine with a bunch of built-in stretch stitches and an overlocker at hand lol 😂

    If the fabric of your patchwork dress is at all stretchy, you need to use a stretch stitch for your seams so that they give with the fabric as it stretches. Some of the seams could be done with your overlocker. Other seams may not be accessible to your overlocker now to dress is sewn up so, as an alternative to stretch stitch, you could use Maraflex thread for your top and bottom stitches. This is a stretch thread which has enough give to stretch with the fabric so you can use a normal straight stitch.

    I love the blue jacket so much!! (just a lil note: the pockets in formal clothes are stitched closed so that they don't get baggy when people put their hands inside while trying them on 😅)

  • @indigobaby3
    @indigobaby3 6 месяцев назад +3

    The stitching on the pockets is to keep them tidy during shipping and while people are trying them on, it's so that the pockets look really neat

  • @jessdunstan
    @jessdunstan 10 месяцев назад +8

    Hi! For stretch clothing definitely try using your overlocker to sew the seams or a zigzag stitch on your machine. Also make sure you use a sewing machine needle specifically for stretch fabric 😊

    Pants were also my nemesis. Then i bought “Fit and Sew Custom Jeans: Classic and Creative Sewing Techniques for Modern Patterns” by Helen Bartley and my pant woes were solved. She uses paper mock ups (woo hoo, no need to sew an entire first garment) to work out the pattern adjustments and get the right fit for YOUR body. It took me a few tries, but I’ve now made several pairs of paints that i wear in my daily rotation. It’s definitely worth a try if pants are on your 2024 bingo card.

    I think it’s your fabric choice for the jacket that’s putting you off. It’s cute as is, kinda reminds me of an art teacher’s smock. But I think your style would prefer something softer so it was a little more boho than boxy and structured. Maybe a patterned or plain linen, double gauze or your favourite patterned thrifted sheet?

    If you’re not hammering beads you just need to lock them back in place with a hand stitch to fix it in place and stop them all unthreading. Also you should try a small rolled hem on a fine fabric like that. It’s tricky but so nice when done correctly.

    My goals this year are: low buy/no buy, make things with all of the stuff I already have (I have sooooooo many supplies and a huge fabric stash) and more reading, less scrolling. I'm doing okay so far, but it's barely into January. Also I have this weird urge to undo alllll of the squares I crocheted, tie it back together and just make a big cardigan, but I feel like I just need to take a break from it and come back at a later time. Lol.

    For the red dress, in the video you made it in, you used a knit fabric, but didn't say if you used a ballpoint needle on your machine or not. A regular sewing machine needle will tear knit fabric every time it stabs the fabric. Try using a ballpoint needle with knits if you haven't already

    Ball point/jersey needle, and triple stitch (the one that looks like 3 lines side by side), will give you a strong, stretchy, straight seam on knits that shouldn’t pop.

  • @iwishfortherain

    14:25 I am so fascinated by this dress and what is happening with the seams. Are the threads snapped? Or can you hear them snapping when it’s stretched? Are your seams sitting flat? Maybe it’s a tension issue? Are you using a stretch or ball point needle if it’s a stretch thick fabric? I am very invested

  • @MsSznur

    They keep pockets sewn together for clothes to keep shape (in storage/on hangers) and look better during fitting. It may sound bad but if someone have for example big belly pockets "open" when jackets are buttoned. This is normal but looks bad. Many people keep pockets shut because they prioritize visuals over functionality.

  • @marcusr4711
    @marcusr4711 7 дней назад

    idk if this is helpful for the thing about the pants not fitting right, but if you buy them from a shop it could be that washing distorts them. most clothing stores today don’t prewash their fabrics, so after you buy them and wash them they can get a bit weird. not necessarily too small, but they’ll just slightly warp in uneven places (because fabric doesn’t like rules lol) and the fit will be *off*
    not rlly something you can fix by just washing them on cold or delicate, because usually you’ll be washing them “correctly,” but they’ll still change a bit simply because they weren’t pre-washed.

    I have never understood the use of the term “unpick” to remove stitching because you are not UNpicking. You may be picking out the stitches, which may be where the term originated, but that would be more picking than unpicking. To unpick, you would first have to pick.
    Anywho, just curious if anyone else is confused by the term I hear used by so many sewists.
