Thanks for all your feedback on my last Cecilie Bahnsen dress video - I've learned so much trying to recreate that masterpiece of a dress!! Hope you're all having a great week - let me know what you're working on in the comments!!! (as per usual
I really love this type of content, personally. It's very much what I'm drawn to. Revisiting designs, troubleshooting, honest feedback about how one really feels about the final make, including those little details like the cuff fit...that stuff is my jam! For what it's worth, you pull off the final aesthetic beautifully, and the dress looks amazing on you!
I’m going to be honest, at first I did not see the vision with these fabrics, but I love the finished piece on you! The end result is more grungy than girly and I think the fit looks great on you.
Can really see such a marked improvement in this dress. It’s interesting how the different fabric gives it a completely different vibe. This one reminds me a bit of the Westwood punk aesthetic 😊
I frequently start projects with excitement and happiness...and midway through the project i question my sanity, i hate it, all the decisions suck and my skills suck even more...and then i finish it...and leave it in the project timeout corner...and then after a while i pull it out and think--oooh, it isn't so bad😂🎉
I really appreciate all the honesty of the struggle that goes into making a dress like this. I feel the pain so strongly 😭 the dress looks so lovely, especially the patchwork element. it elevates the design so much in my opinion as for what I'm working on, I'm working currently on a dress that looks like grapes lol pray for me as I cut out all the individual grape elements
the struggle is real haha!!! Thank you so much! GRAPE DRESS!!!!!! THAT SOUNDS AWESOME this is exactly why people need to learn how to sew!!!!! SO MUCH FUN
I haven't seen you make the first dress....yet. I will look for that video after this. But, i Love, Love, Love the patchwork!! And i also feel you wear that dress well! Your hair nd make up, paired with the boots really sold the grungy edge of it. I was especially attentive when you were explaining your new thoughts on this remake. It really shows your personal growth. And i think you shouldn't be too hard on yourself. Living nd learning, as one does, is what life is all about. You completed the dress nd you executed it well, in my opinion. Good work!
i've commented this before but i'm part of your viewer group that watches every video so don't worry about that haha. but i think it's important to show experimentation and growth!! i've watched so many of my fav youtubers learn how to knit and sew over months and years and shared their journey. i personally like this color scheme more but what you said about fabric makes total sense!! i'm curious about a silky rich red for a gift wrapping ribbon aesthetic. p/s: i'm crocheting a little moth man amigurumi. it's hurting my hands since he's a 3.5mm hook boy but i think he's turning out dandy
ahhh thank you so much for watching my vids :') ok yay i'm so glad, I appreciate the feedback! the red would be such a good addition.. .love the vision. also so cute!!!! 3.5mm is so tiny but I hope he comes out great!!!!
I mean clothing design is hard! I’ve pinned so many beautiful garments and then realized “would I actually look good in this?” And then fabric can make or break a whole look. I feel like it’s all a life-long process in learning. I really like the way the patchwork turned out. Will be interested to hear if it’s something you end up wearing!
Well the dress looks fantastic! Thanks for aharing your process and thoughts about the project! I am currently working on making a poly/cotton Space Invaders bedsheet into a dress from a 1960s pattern, modified to be extra short and have a ruffle at the hem and some very chaotic grain direction to get enough fabric!
I AM TEACHING MYSELF HOW TO CROCHET!!!! I’ve decided that I’m going to crochet myself a sweater vest. I just learned how to do single crochet and use that to make ribbing.
Advice on homemade bias: for seams that are straight and especially cases where you’re using bias to make a strap out of it it is better to not cut bias on bias (lol) but to cut it along the length of the fabric, this way it will give you a neater look as well as a way more reliable and durable strap. And if you have a combination seam (part straight part curve) in case where straight part is significant length it could sometimes make sense to Frankenstein those two types together
I have to be honest i absolutely love this dress, the colors/pattern mixing was so inspired and the bows/lacing at the back really work for me. Even if the dress didnt end up being what you wnated, please know it is inspiring and fun (lone the styling with the red hair ribbons as well)!
I honestly loooove the back and the colors of all the ties together! I think if it was my project, I'd cut out the long 'tail' of the bodice and fill it in with the part of skirt you ended up cutting out the back to give it a waist again. Maybe put in more of the fabric that only ended up in the ties? I might be biased because that one was my favorite of all five!
Love love love this version of the dress! I especially think the back is magnificent. Maybe the front bodice feels a little sparse compared to the back, but that’s nothing a fun necklace or embellishment can’t fix! Great work
I actually adore this dress on you ❤️ I love watching sewing videos on RUclips, and since discovering your channel it immediately became my favorite! I love your style, but also you genuinely seem so sweet. You’re beautiful inside and out 🥰 I wanna be you when I grow up!!!! (Just ignore the fact that I’m fairly certain I’m several years older than you already 🤣)
Love this dress on you both the first and the second version! If you decide to do a third version try to sew your bias tape strips diagonally (at 90 degrees) that makes the seam stretchy too and the seam is way less bulky when you fold it :))
with gatherings. .I do divide and conquer method, .. which basically means just pinning section by section to the dress. Pin the two sides. MEasure out the middle of the gathering fabric and the fabric you are going to put it on. Pin the middle together. Do the same with the two sides. Middle. .to middle. And slowly you get smaller and smaller sections that are perfectly balanced
Thank you again Carly - your vid today has made me feel so much better as i am a self taught sewist and i keep tweaking a sundress and yes one day it will be perfection but isn’t it fun learning along the way.
From the front the dress is nice, but the ties at the back bug me because they are chaotic. I'm working on my third Roberts-Wood piece - a long red and black version of the bow skirt. If you get to the Gold Coast do some op shopping. Lots of very lovely clothes at Lifeline or the Salvos. I scored a dress for $15 from the Melbourne brand Sa Dot Na.
Love this so much, the colour palette and patchworking is ✨✨✨ great job! I do really resonate though with you making something (twice!) and then realising that while it's cool it's not for you. Definitely had those moments myself, and that's okay!! We still enjoy the process 😊
ah thank you so much mate!!! hahah it's so ANNOYING !! but all apart of the process hey. enjoy the process trust the process!!!! ^^^ mantras I must keep telling myself
I went looking for the Ulani dress after this. That it costs so much for cheese cloth and a fit that hinges on a waist pulled tight is outrageous. The dress had some serious floofing to make it look that good. I think you made it ahrder on youraelf with the bias patchwork on the bodice. The result is fantastic though
Watching this as I work on my first attempt of the roberts wood bow dress with the longer skirt extension😮 love your videos Carly!!! And I love that you tackled the project a second time. 🎉
I think the patch working in this dress is great! I think perhaps the front bodice green panel needs to be broken up a little bit. Maybe add some beading or embroidery on your left chest side? To help balance it out. I haven’t seen the original up close so you might be right with the binding. As for the gaping at the back I would be taking some of that volume/gathering out to help fix it but your solution was very clever! The original may also have a lining inside which is fitted to the body so it can not drop down at the back? Which seems like an odd choice for a dress of this design but I would loooove to get my hands on one to inspect it with you hahaha I am currently procrastinating my Taylor swift eras tour outfit because I haven’t properly sewn anything of my own since I graduated school. But I’m running out of time so I think it’s time to start again. Loved the video as always x
Thank you so much mate!! Aw man if you're loving sewing then I can't lie - an overlocker is incredible. You can definitley get by with a zig zag stitch on the domestic machine, and I know sewists who have done that for years before getting an overlocker.... But if you've got a few extra $$ and you're loving the hobby... you'll love an overlocker I think. I got mine for $200 on fb marketplace (it's a mylock 644D) and it's awesome. Speeds up the process, gives a professional finish & the seams look so good!!!
Perhaps the dress just doesn’t match the picture you had of it in your head? Cos as someone coming in with no expectations the end result looks fantastic
Thanks for all your feedback on my last Cecilie Bahnsen dress video - I've learned so much trying to recreate that masterpiece of a dress!! Hope you're all having a great week - let me know what you're working on in the comments!!! (as per usual
For the record, I absolutely love the patchworked version of this dress--the fabrics look so good together and I think it looks so good on you!!!
yea I was thinking the same!! it looks so good I love it!!
aw thank you so much!!! i appreciate it!!!
Agreed!
It's honestly so cool! OMG I just squealed, the back is SiiiiiCK

I felt the "changing your overlocking thread successfully" comment in my core. It's such a satisfying feat!
hahahahah every single time it's such a huge win!!!!!
I’m going to be honest, at first I did not see the vision with these fabrics, but I love the finished piece on you! The end result is more grungy than girly and I think the fit looks great on you.
hehe i understand.... i wasn't sure about it either!! thank you for watching!
Can really see such a marked improvement in this dress. It’s interesting how the different fabric gives it a completely different vibe. This one reminds me a bit of the Westwood punk aesthetic 😊
YAY!!! thank you so much for watching! The vibe IS so different hey!!!
Totally adopting your mismatched overlocking thread idea!!
IT'S THE BEST!!
I frequently start projects with excitement and happiness...and midway through the project i question my sanity, i hate it, all the decisions suck and my skills suck even more...and then i finish it...and leave it in the project timeout corner...and then after a while i pull it out and think--oooh, it isn't so bad😂🎉
BAHAHAHAHA i'm so glad i'm not the only one. the time out corner is REAL!!!
For what it’s worth, I LOVE your dress! I think the front patchwork with that curve in the abdomen area is so elegant and complimentary! ❤
I really appreciate all the honesty of the struggle that goes into making a dress like this. I feel the pain so strongly 😭

GRAPE DRESS!!!!!! THAT SOUNDS AWESOME
this is exactly why people need to learn how to sew!!!!!
SO MUCH FUN
as someone who also hasn't been able to think about anything besides this dress, i fully endorse this video
i understand the fixation with this dress.... and thank you for the endorsement (ahaha)
Using old thread in the overlocker! Genius! Mind blown 🤯
SO GOOD!!!!!!!!
I love love love this dress and I also think it's kinda grungy and it really suits you x!
aw thank you so much!!
I really love how this dress looks, love the sleeves too
Love the double clips in your hair and the horse shirt is awesome
Thanks my BOYFRIEND made them !!!!

I think this dress is absolutely gorgeous.... 10/10 for me.... You look stunning in it😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Aw thank you so much!!!!

Truly!! Aw man it's gotta be one of my least favourite feelings when sewing though.... but lifelong learning is the BEST!!!
Well the dress looks fantastic! Thanks for aharing your process and thoughts about the project!

I bet those sheets in your 1960s dress pattern are gonna look awesome!! That is such a great idea! Good luck!!
@@kascension thank you, I think it's turning out pretty cute!

I think the color combo is great and super edgy
I really love the patchwork design you did on this dress, it looks really grungy, yet cute!
The dress is looking cool in the reveal!
Thank you so much!!

I love the dress! ❤ I could see wearing it to a music festival or other creative venue.
love that!!

Ah a great tactic!! appreciate the advice!!
Wow those red hair ties look soooo good with this dress!
Maybe you could rebind some hems with this color.
Thank you again Carly - your vid today has made me feel so much better as i am a self taught sewist and i keep tweaking a sundress and yes one day it will be perfection but isn’t it fun learning along the way.
YAYYYYY i'm so gladd we're in it together.... it can be hard to stay positive !! But you got this - I hope your sundress is joyous to wear!
From the front the dress is nice, but the ties at the back bug me because they are chaotic. I'm working on my third Roberts-Wood piece - a long red and black version of the bow skirt. RW pieces are seriously gorgeous! I hope it goes well!!

trust the process!!!!
^^^ mantras I must keep telling myself
Wow, good that you fixed the sleeves! I would be disappointed and then leave it on the side for months!

Such a fun journey with the designing and sewing 🎉 Love to watch the process. I am working on patchwork sheets for my bed. Having fun with it!
I did not know that about the bias tape! thank you for that tip 😊 and love the reworking the project video
BIAS TAPE IS AWESOME!!!
Hi, I’m working on building/renovating a shed into a sewing space . And I’m also working on making myself a quilt out of thrifted denim and plaid 😁
Love your dress 😍
Watching this as I work on my first attempt of the roberts wood bow dress with the longer skirt extension😮 love your videos Carly!!! And I love that you tackled the project a second time. 🎉

Loved the video as always x
Hi Carly! Love this dress so much. I am a newer sewer (about a year in), would you recommend an overlocker?
Thank you so much mate!! Aw man if you're loving sewing then I can't lie - an overlocker is incredible. You can definitley get by with a zig zag stitch on the domestic machine, and I know sewists who have done that for years before getting an overlocker....
But if you've got a few extra $$ and you're loving the hobby... you'll love an overlocker I think. I got mine for $200 on fb marketplace (it's a mylock 644D) and it's awesome.
Speeds up the process, gives a professional finish & the seams look so good!!!
You just need to put it away and not look at it for a couple days, you've just got process PTSD. The final result looks absolutely unreal on you!
you're so right!!!! Thank you mate
The dress is so lovely, but maybe you don’t like the colors? It appears to fit you like a glove. Lots of good lessons learned!
She is "sailor moon" 😂
I love the patchwork tho. When u making stuff urself u could be a bit too critical abt it
Perhaps the dress just doesn’t match the picture you had of it in your head? Cos as someone coming in with no expectations the end result looks fantastic
