Coolest project? I’m making a fine art piece that will be a quilt with the words “REST IS RESISTANCE” and using yarn, beads, some fabric paint, patchworking, etc….its gonna be YELLOW and PURPLE and I am psyched.
Twin needle on domestic sewing machine only looks like coverstitch. It is stretchy, it kinda looks like coverstitch, but it is much more problematic. So I think gwtting a coverstitch for that cheap was a good decision
I make t shirts (out of second hand/ salvaged fabrics) for my shop and stretch sewing is super quick and fun once you get across the machines and needles and whatnot! Some domestic machines just hate certain fabrics and you have to find the perfect combo of thread, needle and tension. Next time you should try faux flatlocking on the overlocker!
I think you're in Brisbane? I work at The Sewing Lair at Moorooka and we have some books on overlocking that are kind of vintage but sooooo helpful with the core techniques. You can do heaps of things with overlockers!
Mum and I are doing a patchwork workshop on my birthday! I've never patch worked and I'm excited. Also it's a free workshop run by our local library so that's super cool too.
have just completed some patchwork comfy pants for working at home - hubby calls them happy pants - and i hav to agree as every strip of fabric in them brings me joy
I was just thinking about doing that! I need pants for around the house and I thought if I was going to make them for when I’m doing housework I want them to be fun!
the projects I am working on right now are all of my works in progress that I've put off for far too long! My goal is to get as many of them completed by the end of the year as possible, and it's really helped me focus on sewing more often in my free time
If you have a domestic machine that has the lightning bolt stitch you can use that to sew seams with. Decrease the width of the stitch somewhere around 1.5-2. It looks fairly straight but it stretches. Also check which way your fabric stretches the most, this becomes the width way. Because that’s where the stretch is needed on a body. Love your content. 😊
you are so much braver than me! stretch scares me so much, but watching this was actually super encouraging and very educational! your bravery is honestly super inspiring!!! I'm currently working on a fall-themed chemise-like dress to wear to American Thanksgiving this year!
Ooh teeeny tip about sewing neck bands, when dividing your bodice into quarters, make sure you match the front and back centre fronts to find where the middle points are on the remainder by the shoulder seam. It’s not always at the shoulder seams and that could be the reason why you’re top is a bit wonky. From, an avid knit project maker 😊 Ps, I highly recommend Ellie and Mac Patterns and Petite Stitchery & Co Patterns. I have several more recommendations but these ones are in my opinion great patterns and have a wide variety of styles and patterns
Absolutely love your positive crazy energy even when you make, what you think are, mistakes. It's all learning in the end! But yes, it's probably time so start tackling the wedding dress.... looking forward to be following your journey! 😊
Bikinis were my first dive into sewing! It’s said to be the black belt of sewing 😅. Edgewater Ave patterns are the best and she has RUclips tutorials to help you along. I love your spirit, enthusiasm and talent! 🫶🏻💗
When I sew neckbands I always pin in more places, I’ll quarter it and then pin again halfway between every quarter (so 8 places) Depending on the size I’ll even pin halfway between every pin again (so 16 places) I find that the more pins the more spread out any excess fabric is so it’s let’s noticeable
maybe this discovery on thread quality and stretch will fix the issue you had with that cool double red dress you made! the seam popping might have been because of the fabric not liking the needle/thread combo
I'm on a sewing project hiatus for exam season but I'm slowly making it thru me and my friends' mends and alterations list in the meantime! I'm also still kind of riding the high of making my first halloween costume!
I’m planning on making a something with more patchwork, I really enjoy patchworking! Your work has inspired me to sew more, and be confident to sew things out of my comfort zone! I absolutely adore the way you explain and show things in such detail, thank you for all your videos!
That's WONDERFUL!! Patchworking is such a delight. I'm so glad you're taking yourself on different sewing adventures! Aw I'm so glad - thank you for watching!!
Re: sewing stretch on a domestic: you can also use wooly nylon thread in the bobbin, and/or adjust the bobbin tension. I have some thin neoprene that I absolutely CANNOT get my domestic to hold a stitch in.
I'm happy you own one of these so i can live vicariously through you, but ooh im getting a sewing machine this holiday season and that twin needle looks so cool!
I decided to keep all my cheap tread for handsewing and basting (usually use old, old tread for basting but when I need the basting to last a bit longer or when it’s with more tension, I’ll use “fresh” not-yet-disintegrating tread). I will need more trips to buy Gütermann (that’s kinda the only quality one I find locally) but when buying 1 or maybe 2 or 3 at a time when I’ve planned more than 1 fabric/color, it should be doable. I love your enthousiasme. Thought this was my first video of yours I watched but just realized I recognized you or your name (you know how “naggingly vague” it can be sometimes, almost not worth calling it a form of recognition lol). Anyway, recognize something from I didn’t know where or what so checked and it was the magic pants from Ann Tilley that I saw. Still need to make that one but didn’t know which fabric yet. Have you made those pants again? Also, upon checking, I saw congrats are in order so congratulations on the engagement! Looking forward to seeing the wedding dress unfold. Now, back to the remaining of this video but WOW I LOVE that cotton fabric of your romper ❤❤❤ you’re right to love all the items though!
I mean, if I saw an industrial coverstitch machine for that price I would also be very tempted. Lack of space and lack of interest in stretch projects be damned (I’m not completely uninterested, there is just nothing I’d make for myself with it)😂
thank you so much for your videos Carly! You've inspired me to just start sewing and learn by making mistakes instead of trying to learn everything before I start. I appreciate your content so much and cannot WAIT to see what you do for your wedding dress!
Ironically the first real fabric I’ve bought and worked on was stretch velvet and I loved it idk why maybe because like I was just chilling kinda hoping it would work out and it did!
WIP: so many... But just sorted a bunch of scraps to nake my VERY FIRST quilt for my bestest fruend who just announced to me she's got a little bub on the way!!
I’ve not been able to get a twin needle to work right, even on different machines. I bought a coverstitch and sort of regret it. I paid $600 for a machine that does one thing (sewing hems, mostly on knits), but it does it very well. I wish I had found a $100 older machine. My machine is plastic and I hate the sound it makes (I only use vintage machines for regular sewing). At least yours will last a while. Usually I reduce the length of the neckband to 75 - 80% of the neck opening.
Speaking of mistakes - last night I was altering the neckline of some turtleneck undershirts to make them crew neck. hile unpicking the neckline, I completely stopped paying attention and fully unpicked one of the shoulder seams 🙃 oh well I sewed it back together best I could but I just felt so silly
It’s so funny that people think sewing with stretch is scary… I started with stretch (not knowing anything different) lol I was more scared to work with wovens than stretch.
Watching you always encourages me to improve my sewing but not take things over seriously.. ❤ I have encountered a problem hope you can help or someone reading this comment can help. I made a bodice with a back shoulder dart and it when I wore it it has excess fabric at the end of the dart point, like a little mount fuji.. 😅😅 can you please advise what to do...
Carly. I love your videos so much. Your video on why I need to learn to start sewing gave me the inspiration to start. I made 2 giant scrunchies and I purchased and successfully created the soften tote and it is my prized possession. I’m going to do a pair of pants next. Very excited about that. I am forcing my husband to watch this video with me and he keeps expressing his concern for your wristlet pin cushion and he is concerned that if you were to fall on your wrist, or bump it, all the pins would go through and puncture you (intrusive thoughts for the win😅) does it have a plate on the bottom to prevent said injury? 17:38 anyways, his concern caused me to be concerned so now I’m making this comment in hopes that if you haven’t thought about that before and it is indeed a dangerous possibility maybe it could prevent an injury? 😭 I don’t know if I commented on your video where you said you were engaged but I was so giddy about that video and I CAN NOT WAIT to watch you go through the process of creating your stunning dress. 😭 Congratulations, Carly! I’m sorry if I freaked you out about the pins! Just lookin’ out! ❤
Thanks for the tips. I hate sewing with stretch fabric because it never works for me. But I reckon it’s the thread!!! Hey would you do a video about the legal side of running a business? I want to start but am not sure about tax and website versus Etsy etc. I would love my own website but then do you need an ABN and do you have to declare your very small (in my case) earnings to the tax man? It’s so confusing! I am in Australia so would love to know. Cheers
@fromcarlyb hiii!!!!!!! I love your style so much and I hope to make my own wedding dress someday like you🎉 lots of people I know arent really into your type of dress and style but it brings me such confidence to see girls like you❤❤

Yeeeeee!!!! You did so amazingly well!!!

some incredible tips, thank you so much for sharing!!!!
😊Quarter marks are not usually the shoulder seams. Need to fold side to side. Love your energy.
All of your projects came out amazing! Good job!👏 Your persistence is admirable! Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂
I just finished up making 4 aprons that a friend bought from me! they were super quick and easy and so much fun!

Hi Carly! I want to suggest a little decorative lace around the neckline to hide the wonky. I just love watching your channel. :)

Beautiful beautiful beautiful! And can’t wait for wedding things 🤩
I am currently making my own wedding dress and I am SO EXCITED to watch you make yours too!!! All the best lovely Carly ❤
that's so exciting!!! all the best!!!
This is such a fun coincidence, I just decided to try sewing a swimsuit for the first time yesterday! These tipps will def come in handy
You did great! The t-shirts are sweet and that romper is awesomeness! I think you were smart to line it for a bit more modesty and comfort. 💕⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love how these came out. Thank you for the sewing thread tips- I get so frustrated with the zigzag on my machine. Excited to see gown content!

I just got my first sewing machine second hand and have jumped right in! So fun to watch & sew along with you.

So, for a minute there, before you turned garment 2 right way around, i wondered if you’d made a giant nappy 😜
bahahahaha so true
Awesome Carly you rock it!!!
“I feel crAAAzy 👍” 🤪
I heart your vids so much!
Loving your videos ❤ Have you done a tour of your memade wardrobe? I would love to see it 😍
Shoulder seams are usually not exactly in 1/4 of the tshirt. So ot is actually better to check where exactly the neckband should be pinned
i love the fabric choices you made in that juno dress!!
thank you so much for your videos Carly! You've inspired me to just start sewing and learn by making mistakes instead of trying to learn everything before I start. I appreciate your content so much and cannot WAIT to see what you do for your wedding dress!
I used old t-shirts to make a jumpsuit. Its on my tiktok 😊
Love watching your videos while I work! Currently upcycling some leftover wool and twill into quilted scarves for chilly season ❄
Ironically the first real fabric I’ve bought and worked on was stretch velvet and I loved it idk why maybe because like I was just chilling kinda hoping it would work out and it did!
Whatttt that's incredible!!!! Velvet can be a challenging textile too & you did STRETCH velvet!!! You're a natural!!!
@@fromcarlybthank you I’m hoping I can channel those skills when I make my Tiana ballgown prom dress

looove the bodysuit!😍

Same for me :D Although I must say looking back it was frustrating and probably would have been easier to start with non stretch

👚 🧵love how you recycled old T-shirts, wish more people did this as I imagine it would reduce so much waste
Everything turned out so cute, love everything- the romper is glorious but the construction looks so complicated! Not sure i could follow along

do you have a video on how to use elastic? ive seen a few videos on it but i cant really grasp how to use it. ime trying to make pants that use it
The Garden Dress pattern also has layers - otherwise the pintucks piece would be a nightmare to mark properly!
