Once again another great video. Thank you so much for your thoughts about Dr. Neal Barnard, he's one of my heroes also. Also, good call on giving up the coconut cream.
Mic, you helped me so much with all your videos. I started going Plant-based about a week ago and I'm absorbing all this information. I bought Dr. Joel Fuhrmans book Eat to Live and read it in 4 hours. I've been to many vegan channels and I have to say yours is one of the most informative with best up-to-date info that you have access to plus your personality is awesome. I bet people in your life get along easily with you. Thanks for all you do and helping people like me make a turn around for better nutrition and better our planet in the process.
Regarding the suggestion to "smash in those carbs," it could be a psychological thing to help borderline eating disorder folks with carb phobia to get over their fear and get enough calories in. These carb enthusiasts even say initial weight gain is fine. It could be a mindset to set someone up for success in the long term. I don't agree with them but I'm guessing this is where these high carb people are coming from. Other examples outside of nutrition are: 5x5 in the gym is arguably better for beginners but 3x5 means less time in the gym and therefore better adherence. Paying off high interest debt first makes more sense but paying off the smallest debts first boosts morale and sets up a habit. Making the bed makes no sense but it could train your mind to be productive regardless of how you feel. So these things are not optimal but I can see how they have the potential to set people up for better adherence and success in the long run.
I think high carb and low carb can sometimes be a little subjective. Some people believe low carb to be 50 grams of carbs max or even anywhere under 200 grams. High carb could be perceived as anywhere over 50 grams or +200-300 grams of carbs. Personally I thrive around 200 grams carbs MINIMUM 😂 but I still consume more than 50 grams of fat, so a balanced approach works for me personally!
I switched to the "Starch Solution" way of eating last year- it is the first time I've felt good about food - and they put a lot of emphasis on eating lots of vegetables, I have watched my cholesterol lower, and other health issues resolving. I'm a new high carb, whole food dietier, trying to lose over a hundred pounds pounds, so yeah, I'm studiously avoiding any kind of processed food, limiting my nuts and seeds and avocados, and using the least amount of oil I can currently cook with. I will add avocado and nuts and seeds back, in a few months. If I'm short something, that maybe a problem for future me. I'm eating a lot of rice and veggies right now tho. It's working too!
I agree totally. unnatural vegan is committed and often apologizes when she messes up; at one point there was a face-off between these two people, both guys I respect, and I really liked the way Mic glossed over an un-thought out assessment of Neil Barnard: very classy. Cheers!
Over the past several months, I have been slowly transitioning from a lacto-ovo pescetarian diet to a vegan diet. _So far, so good!_ Right now, the only non-vegan dietary product that I still have in my possession is about half a bottle of commercial, store-bought ranch dressing. Since switching, I have started to pay much more attention to my omega 3 and omega 6 intakes, significantly boosting my intake of the former. I did this through the introduction of ground flaxseed into my diet. I sprinkle it onto my oatmeal every morning. And whenever I have a peanut butter sandwich, I also sprinkle it onto that as well. And I also try to include it in whatever I fry in oil. Since doing so, I noticed less inflammation ( i.e., my swollen hemorrhoids disappearing _without the use of drugs or other medicinal remedies!_ ).
Karl Scheel lol yeah, good luck absorbing omega 3 from a sprinkling of flax seeds. Only 1% of ALA is even converted from plant sources in the first place. Flax seeds aren’t even assimilated in our guts.
@@veronicachic Really? According to _whom?_ Dr.Greger of nutritionfacts.org consumes *ground* flaxseed on a daily basis for his _own_ health; he happens to be one of the _most rigorous_ health professionals in the area of nutrition. His claims are always backed by credible scientific evidence. What evidence have you got to support _your_ claim?
Karl Scheel dr Greger? You mean the pale, emaciated, rotted tooth bald man who uses magnifying glasses just to see? Look, even if you took a cup of your disgusting flax seeds, you’d only get the same amount of omega 3 as you would from a bite of fish lmao. So..where do I get essentially fatty acids and amino acids from? I’m just trying out a vegan diet but struggling as to know what I can eat that isn’t going to kill me (saturated fats) nuts sound iffy, is avocado ok? I’ve always thought avocado was good fat! Please enlighten
All nuts that i eat, except for coconut, have minimal saturated fats. So it's kinda weird to say to not eat nuts when having heart problems. Walnuts, peanuts ( i know they are technically legumes, but they still have nut propreties ), hazelnuts are all rich in healthy unsaturated fats and minimal saturated. Am i mistaking something?
Great video. I use olive oil sparingly, but still love it and I’m OK with that. I’ve lowered my risk enough by avoiding 75% of all the foods I used to eat i.e. butter daily. :D
I have been a high carb low fat vegan for almost 2 years and i feel awful. I'm bloated, gassy and nauseous everytime i eat. I am super low in energy and feel weak all the time. Not sure what to do.
The nut confusion might also stem from the peanut issues. Could you talk about peanut vs true nuts. I love nuts and grow my own almonds. I don't think I would cope without the oils or cooked food. Many spices (perhaps besides onions and garlic) are extremely beneficial on a regular basis.
That was brilliant! Thanks mike for explaining the 70g saturated fat in that coconut cream!! I somehow missed that one and love my Thai curries! 😱😬😁 love your channel! Keep it coming!
Is there any concern of the omega 6:3 ratio of some of the nuts and seeds. I've seen that study where the optimal is 4:1 and we likely evolved eating 1:1. Almonds for example are 2010:1. You'd probably just need to make sure you ate flax seeds too
Question... I am a very picky eater, so i have smoothies every morning filled with a variety of fruits, oats, flaxseeds, and garden of life raw meal. Then I'll usually have a huge pasta dinner. My cronometer numbers are perfect but I'm just not sure if I'm breaking up to much fiber in my smoothies. My blood work reflected total cholesterol 74, Triglicerydies 49, and glucose at 90. Just curious on anyone's thoughts if this is good long term(did the bloodwork 5 years after starting this lifestyle)
You can achieve the same result, i.e. loose weight or reverse diabetes, by removing carbohydrates from your diet, but without the negative consequence of muscle loss and malnutrition, since carbohydrates are not essential.

I would love to see you give him a shoutout in one of your video, so more people can discover him. BTW I'm going to post this comment under all of your video to be sure you see it ,so like or respond to this comment to show me you see it :D
Can't wait to check out Plant Positive. I find so many good tips from comments on all these vegan videos here. I am 4 mos into this and know no one who is vegan. All the videos and comments help motivate me. Mic, you're one of my favorites. It is so hard to eat out with friends without consuming cheese and oils. How do you all handle it?
Hi Mic - epidemiology student here. Looking at the screenshot provided in the video, what you said about the results of the meta analysis on nuts is incorrect. Nut consumption does appear to be protective for heart disease and all-cause mortality (lowering their risk by 20%-37% and 16-25% respectively). However, the effect on risk of neurodegenerative diseases is insignificant (that is, 1 is contained within the 95% confidence interval), meaning that nut consumption was NOT associated with a lower risk of these diseases. --a big fan :)
A long and fairly comprehensive video that calls one of my vegan stalwarts (Dr. Greger) to task for his imprecise analysis of a few nut studies mentioned in "How Not To Die". Jeff (of Veg Source) enlists the aid of T. Colin Campbell in explaining the mystery and the facts around why nuts may or may not be good for you. And while the video may not come to any hard and fast conclusions you will definitely be very well informed on the subject of nutology. Thanks Karen.
I became aware of the video as I was filming this one and haven’t seen it but wanted to make some extra points on the benefits of nuts and also extra stuff on the walnut Industry
Hmm. I think this confused me a bit more on how I should balance my macros on most days. You kinda said if you found out you had high cholesterol you would do something that could be detrimental to your health in another way. Am I overcomplicating this? I have a lot of healtg issues to reverse/help relieve symptoms of so I have been thinking really hard on this.
Hey, Mic, when you do your sugar video, could you include other sweeteners? Like xylitol and other sugar alcohols? Thanks! Although all the sweeteners out there probably deserve a video of their own. I use xylitol instead of sugar, in really small amounts, but as with everything on the Internet, reports vary.

Shane Creamer wow that's amazing, thanks for your reply! So I'm guessing you stuck to the lower carb vegan diet then? If you don't mind me asking, how old are you and what percentage of carbs would you say you have in your diet? I'm 20 and I'm terrified of having a heart attack one day...
Thanks for this video! Like you, I tend to eat whole foods mostly without counting macros (I'm just way too lazy for that). So covering which foods have the highest saturated fat content that we should consider limiting is helpful. And I loved all the other hodgepodge!
I use cartoned coconut milk. It's a lot lower. 1g saturated fat for 100ml. So not as big a deal. Get the taste without the fat.
Other examples outside of nutrition are:
5x5 in the gym is arguably better for beginners but 3x5 means less time in the gym and therefore better adherence.
Isn't "balance" subjective as well? Everyone calls their approach balanced.
Yassssssss!! Can’t get enough of this!!
Nothing wrong with consuming nuts........in moderation 😂 nuts are fine to eat, stop being scared!
Cr8zystar I agree. Nuts, seeds, avocados, etc. are healthy foods no matter how you slice it.

I switched to the "Starch Solution" way of eating last year- it is the first time I've felt good about food - and they put a lot of emphasis on eating lots of vegetables, I have watched my cholesterol lower, and other health issues resolving. Hi Mic, thanks for the video. Possible video idea - discuss what you think the best whole food plant based books to read are,. For example, how not to die, eat to live etc.. and then there are more specific books for certain health conditions.

Great video Mic! Very informative as always. I have sent some friends (that I was discussing with online)over to your channel because of how you always reference scientific articles to make your points. Thanks for all the information!! It’s much appreciated.

Excellent video Mic! You're truly a fun and educational person to watch and I appreciate what you're doing. Keep it up brotha man!
I reversed the syptoms of PCOS with a high carb vegan diet.It has to be done just right though..I can't just eat white bread and call that a carb.Ive had to eat things like potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat bread and take oil out of my diet.It takes a lot of discipline,so it might not be for everyone, but I think its a very good way to eat if its done right and if you have a health problem you are trying to reverse!
Me too! Had my GP baffled and asking what the hell I'd been doing. Even losing weight is a breeze now, it seemed impossible before. So worth it.
This is good to know. I need to reverse my pcos! Any tips would be great please!

Great video Mic. Spot on 👍
I'm a new high carb, whole food dietier, trying to lose over a hundred pounds pounds, so yeah, I'm studiously avoiding any kind of processed food, limiting my nuts and seeds and avocados, and using the least amount of oil I can currently cook with. I will add avocado and nuts and seeds back, in a few months. If I'm short something, that maybe a problem for future me. I'm eating a lot of rice and veggies right now tho. It's working too!
Thank you 🙏 for all the work you put into these videos!! I want a shirt!!

I dunno yours was pretty thorough
because your cholesterol deficient brain can't go in-depth, why don't you go ahead and google how much cholesterol is in the brain my man.
I agree totally. unnatural vegan is committed and often apologizes when she messes up; at one point there was a face-off between these two people, both guys I respect, and I really liked the way Mic glossed over an un-thought out assessment of Neil Barnard: very classy. Cheers!
Why are you so obsessed with her? Jeez, dude. You're thirstier than me watching Black Panther.

Research yourself, I’m not here to link you easily searchable facts.
Very good points here! Thanks...
Always happy to c my notification from u 😇
Hope to see some holiday stuff soon!
We could listen to you all day Mike!!
Great video. I use olive oil sparingly, but still love it and I’m OK with that. I’ve lowered my risk enough by avoiding 75% of all the foods I used to eat i.e. butter daily. :D
Kynario no you haven’t lmao.
Ghost Yes I have lmao.
The T-shirt is adorable I love it!!
Thanks Mic! This was very helpful
I have been a high carb low fat vegan for almost 2 years and i feel awful. I'm bloated, gassy and nauseous everytime i eat. I am super low in energy and feel weak all the time. Not sure what to do.
What’s the difference between coconut
cream, & full fat coconut milk in a can?
The nut confusion might also stem from the peanut issues. Could you talk about peanut vs true nuts. I love nuts and grow my own almonds. I don't think I would cope without the oils or cooked food. Many spices (perhaps besides onions and garlic) are extremely beneficial on a regular basis.
That shirt is adorable! I love it.
Mike you've cracked this one wide open.
Thank you so much for this video! I seriously love watching you and I have learned so much! ♥️♥️🍕
I like your honest reviews...
That was brilliant! Thanks mike for explaining the 70g saturated fat in that coconut cream!! I somehow missed that one and love my Thai curries! 😱😬😁 love your channel! Keep it coming!
I’m glad you commented on this. Rewatch the video. I’m pretty sure the 70 was 70 percent of the RDA not 70 grams of saturated fat.
I love high carb diet there amazing I lost 80 pounds on a high carb diet
How much of it was fat?
You can achieve the same result, i.e. loose weight or reverse diabetes, by removing carbohydrates from your diet, but without the negative consequence of muscle loss and malnutrition, since carbohydrates are not essential.

Good stuff; I especially appreciate hearing your final thoughts on the vegan "apostate" trend. TFP!
Can you explain why I lost weight on a vegan diet. I went back to eating meat and gained about 15 lbs yet I am eating way less calories than I ate on the vegan diet. So now I’m roughly 10-15 lbs over what my ideal Weight should be according to BMI. I ate a ton of carbs on vegan diet but kept dropping weight. My cholesterol went down eating vegan but my triglycerides were high and my fasting glucose was 110 on the vegan diet.
wow. a simple road for hearth disease :)
Thank you so much Mic!! This is an excellent video, I very much needed to hear that information. I personally consume a high carb raw diet but I also eat a lot of nuts & healthy fats, they are so necessary in my opinion.
Mic do you know the channel plant positive ,he did some impressive work in the past ,for example in his videos ''Ketosis is natural, natural is Good part 1&2'' he demonstrate with evidence that the easy capacity of human to enter into ketosis state compare to other mammals is actually a proof that we are high carb vegan by nature.
I would love to see you give him a shoutout in one of your video, so more people can discover him.
BTW I'm going to post this comment under all of your video to be sure you see it ,so like or respond to this comment to show me you see it :D
Yes I will definitely try and tie him into a shoutout in the future.

I am. Been McDougalling since 2016. Going great, lean, strong.
Thanks for your videos Mic. Have you checked out Vegsource's recent video Nuts Won't Save Your Life?
A long and fairly comprehensive video that calls one of my vegan stalwarts (Dr. Greger) to task for his imprecise analysis of a few nut studies mentioned in "How Not To Die". Jeff (of Veg Source) enlists the aid of T. Colin Campbell in explaining the mystery and the facts around why nuts may or may not be good for you. And while the video may not come to any hard and fast conclusions you will definitely be very well informed on the subject of nutology. Thanks Karen.
@@eristicate You are welcome.

There a Vegan Doctor Erik Estrada in Mexico, very well known and he recommends eating avocados and some nuts
But some Vegans recommend to be carful , because excess fat will damage you arteries
even if its vegan
The Doctor recommends fat intake, because the brain needs it
what is your opinion on it

Rewatching a bunch of your older videos. Happy to say, was a whole foods vegan when I first watched (went vegan Feb '18). Still whole foods vegan. :D Stay happy, stay vegan!
Don't know of any studies on "bad nuts", but I do know Nick Cave put out an album in the 80's called "The Bad Seed". Maybe that's relevant?
Hi Mic! What do you think about the video "Nuts Won't Save Your Life" from VegSource?
When I eat greens such as kale, broccoli and spinach I always gag when I eat them... pretty much every mouthful even when prepared nicely. I get bad stomach cramps and then its pain on the toilet. Can I not eat them????? Every time I eat them it is just ... painful.
You might have sensitivity to toxins in these vegetables (oxilates, sulforaphane), also you may have no microbes to digest them.
KarasekUS it could be the toxins as I eat a variety of foods especially fermented foods for my sensitive stomach. I can only eat small amounts of fruit as well. I like cherry tomatoes so I try to eat them as a side dish instead.
