      Honestly neither look that great, they both look like a cell phone, and I couldn't see any real difference between the two! That being said, for being a cell phone, it is nice to see how far we've come and you could get away with a lot of vlogging etc with it! I'm still on the Samsung S20 Ultra and the 8k 24 is amazing so I may be a little biased.

    First of all FANTASTIC video as usual Matti. As someone who has now made a lot of videos on ProRes during the beta process I see sooooo many people not understanding what it actually is. So many comments about how the dynamic range is the same, colors the same etc. ProRes is not some new color science or a new version of HDR. It simply is a codec that films in much higher bitrates so that thinks look sharper, cleaner and as you pointed out more natural especially in high moving shots (like ur low angle example of feet walking) ProRes helps not have such ugly compression artifacts. ProRes also is known for handling noise much better which in my testing is sometimes yes and no. So for anyone reading this rant, ProRes is NOT intended to change color tones, dynamic range or look completely different than non ProRes footage. It simply saves much more detail that the amazing iPhone can capture instead of compressing it down as much. Hope that helps someone. Huge fan Matti, always a joy to watch your videos.

      Yeah, I hate the file sizes ProRes creates, but it's a breeze to edit in vs Compressed HEVC Video. That being said, I only have a 128gb 13 Pro, so ProRes is a no go

      Since you know so much about ProRes. Is there a noticeable difference between 1080 and 4K when you’re filming in ProRes? I’m not a content creator or anything, so I don’t really need highest quality, but I just wondered if there’s a noticeable difference. Thank you

    ProRes quality is not really apparent UNTIL you start pushing the colour around with heavy grading.
    H264 and H265 will start to show stepping when you really stretch the grade.
    High Texture shots of rushing water and a field of wheat or trees show how the compression of H254/5 fall apart as well.
    That why ProRes is the acquisition codec for professionals. A simple out-of-the-can comparison is an incomplete analysis.
    Also where ProRes shines is in the edit as its significantly faster to edit with across all systems.
    This was a rushed examination of ProRes and did not give a meaningful review of what it's capable of giving a professional.
    The ability to scout a shoot with this phone and possibly staying with the initial shot from the phone because the conditions were ideal.
    Makes it usable because we now have the headroom to grade so it looks close to the cinema camera enough that you can't tell it's B-Roll from an iPhone.
    Shoot one hour of ProRes 422 HQ and see how long it takes to move over to your Mac.
    You need two, one to shoot with while the other is moving files over on set. So your not standing around twiddling your thumbs waiting to shoot more.

    • @vistasuprema
      @vistasuprema 2 года назад +7

      I agree with everything you said about this video.
      I disagree with this being “close enough” to a cinema camera look. The iPhone sensor is tiny, and it looks completely different than a larger sensor on a cinema camera.

    • @ChristopherAshworthpage
      @ChristopherAshworthpage 2 года назад +1

      @@vistasuprema I disagree a short cut could be hidden easily in the mix. As I said close to a cinema camera not as good as though. 10bit colour can be matched better between different gear. 10bit 422 has 1.075 Billions colours vs only 16 million colours in (8bit’s) tiny little gamut.

    Yeah this is something that the average user, or even those with a trained eye will not be able to tell the difference. Until they zoom in, or start messing with color correction, and then the difference becomes apparent. It really is specifically a PRO feature, it does not and should not matter to people who are just shooting home videos or something. Video editors will appreciate it though.

    What people forget is more FPS =/= better on cameras as it does on games, for example. In the case where you chose a lower camera FPS, it actually let's more light in due to the shutter being open longer, go figure, but the thing most people forget is that a lot of movies and content they consumer, is actually sub 30fps and has a certain influence on the feel and tone of a movie. Things can be perceived as unnaturally smooth with higher fps and is obviously good for slow mo, but, conversley, some may perceive lower fps as a tad choppy when compared. It's both subjective and entirely dependent on what you are going for based on what you need it for. A 30 fps disparoty really isn't that big of a deal- and 60 certainly isn't enough to pull off decent post process slow mo.

    • @insertnamehere8723
      @insertnamehere8723 2 года назад

      @Nathaniel Walker the whole point was that a high frame rate isn't the same as gaming, but people believe a higher frame rate is better because of gaming sensibilities which obviously are different. Yes, there are scenarios mentioned where you might want a higher fps for obvious reasons, but it isn't necessary in every application besides those aformentioned. I'd understand for sport/ motion related content where you want a clearer picture, or slow mo possibilities in post production, but the majorty of movies are sub 30fps and nowhere near 60 since that would look way too smooth to some causing a soap opera effect and artificial, not to mention the less fps the longer light has to hit the sensor, meaning more light is subsequently captured and the byproduct being a more cinematic looking scene.

    Let’s be real though. At the end of the day, if your main (or only) camera is your iPhone, it really isn’t worth the upgrade. My entire channel uses the 12 Pro Max as a main camera and it cost me $1200 USD. To switch over to the 13 Pro Max for the sole purpose of ProRes, that would cost me $1600USD since I would be forced to get the 1TB version because of file size. I would get a $800 credit for the upgrade so ultimately … this ProRes upgrade would cost $2,000! That’s slightly cheaper than a Canon R5 body that would be a complete game changer.

    ProRes just matters if you have the correct equipment to view it. Specially if the color subsampling is yuv422 and 10-bit color. Most screens just support until 8-bit and it also matters what kind of panel do you have. Also, you won't see any difference here on RUclips because all of the videos here are encoded as VP9 codec (some H264 especially lower quality) and the important informations of the video are now gone. Even if you upload a 10GB video here, RUclips will just compress it to just 500MB so what's the sense? You can never compare the two until you try it yourself with the correct equipment.

      I don't think any sane person wants to use prores as a delivery codec, it's similar to editing on RAW, you're not going to send anyone raw photos. This is giving you an immense amount of information to color, and mask.

    _I don’t think you guys understand prores; it’s for editing purposes, in ProRes All of the colors, contrast, shadows details, etc. are all unlocked or uncompressed, when editing any color in a video recorded under ProRes you are actually editing the tone of that color, instead of adjusting its volume, such as what most people do when editing a finalized video [H.265]._
    _ProRes is like recording a video in log with color/contrast correction LUT. All that’s needed when editing is to soften the video and add a color grated LUT. Also, Perez is easier to work with when editing large files on an 4gig Ram and low performance multitasking, CPU_

      On RUclips. With the actual files on your computer you can see the difference. If all you do is upload to RUclips/social then it’s pointless (I used it for an event video and in the end it didn’t matter)

    This is as useful as those videos comparing a phone to a cinema camera right out of the box, you're barely going to see the difference out of the camera similar to taking a jpeg photo to a raw.

    For general use it really doesn't seem like it makes a difference. In reality the only person who is really going to notice is the creator -- if the content is good the audience won't know or care if it was shot in prores or not
