One of the biggest giveaways is the aggressive hdr and the over saturation , specially the shots where we can see the sky
Hdr should look more natural since out eyes have 20 stops of dynamic range while the c70 has 16 stops, and usually, more natural means closer to the human eye. I think we are just not used to hdr as films aren’t shot with 20 stops of dynamic range. The saturation though is definitely over the top and looks more saturated than real life.
@@KOKOBC While iPhone has better HDR, it has a sharp roll off that makes it look unnatural.
@@KOKOBC There are many ways to blend together multiple exposures and some of them will look shittier than others. Arguably, the C70 is also doing something of an HDR stack between two exposures too, with it's "DGO" tech, but it looks way more natural in its color grade.
@@bryan7300 fr this aint 2008
Yeah you can really notice the sky
biggest giveaway were the shutter speed, oversharpening and HDR, surprisingly night shots were much harder to distinguish, probably because the phone had to lower the shutter speed. cinematic mode looks borderline unusable.
If there is some light it's still fairly easy, but the 5:24 shot I only realized it's the phone when it switched to A7SIII and I had a frame of reference. The oversharpening gets reduced because of the high ISO, the oversaturation isn't as obvious as there aren't that many saturated colors and no sun to properly bring them out, and like you said the shutter speed difference is smaller.
Nobody shot at night with a mirrorless at f/4.0 it wasn't fair, the moment he use f/2.0 lense it became so obvious. Sensor size matters.
also it's the over sharpened video
You’ve got to stop down with cinematic mode Gene. At those sort of distances it needs to be kept at around F5.6 to F8 then it looks great. F1.4 only works on wide shots. 🙂
Maybe a video about it is coming soon on your channel ? 😁
Yeah I was going to say same thing. I find stopping down to F5.6 - F10 works great for most stuff. 👍
Explain? Please?
But... Toneh?! 😳
@@marilyto You can set the cinematic mode to different settings which make its affect more or less visible. To get the best results you don’t want to go all the way to the max. Instead it’s more optimal to use it in a limited way to make it look more natural and realistic and take away the blurry contours around the subject.
For me, the colour of the sky and sun was the giveaway for iPhone. Ultra-bright sun, Ultra blue sky. With the C70 the sun is less contrasted and the sky less saturated. Got about 90% right. That first shot tho got me good I was sure you started with the C70.
The thing that I love about your channel is that in all honesty, I have no desire to know the differences between the c70 and the iphone 13 because i don't have either one, but i watched the entire video because i enjoy watching you and the content you make even if it has nothing to do with me. keep up the great work Gene!
Great video, one of a kind! Never thought there were soo many things to look out in a video
I'm glad you always do comparisons using other lenses as well. Something a lot of people who truly think phones are a replacement for cameras don't realize is that you can get any lens you want for the kind of images you want to produce, you're not relying on a phone manufacturer to include what you need. That's part of the reason these phones are getting so expensive, having 3 different rear cameras with a ToF sensor and one camera also having a macro lens, etc. Just so that they can try to satisfy everyone's wants and needs.
You are so coool Mr. Potato! You convinced me to buy this iPhone with your review, it’s amazing, before I had a huawei P30 lite and the differences are night and day!
You make my life happy
Yes, will definitely look forward to a video about lenses!! Thanks Gene!
Love your videos! Your channel is the best one about camera stuff. Much love from Latvia (europe)!
I found this channel while watching smartphone to cinema camera comparison. And it's back let's goo..and iam watching all ur main channel video ever since.
I still don’t get why they add a bigger sensor, ProRes, better lenses, focus rack (yes it’s not really a professional feature) but still have that automatic WB and exposure and in general over sharpened and over saturated look. You can kind of fix this issue with third-party apps but if they try to offer a „professional“ video mode this should all be possible in the iPhone camera app.
(I’m an Android user btw)
True, RAW DNG video is best & we have developed if for android recently.
RUclips it "First RAW Video shot on a phone"/Autumn in London for the true quality
Bruh just buy a camera
@@craigman7262 Bruh I own a camera which doesn’t mean that we cannot discuss the strengths and weaknesses of iPhone videography capabilities
Because it’s a “phone”.
Because apple is cheap. Same reason why they call a 256gb ssd pro.
Loving the footage of Calgary! (my city - happy to see that you visited! Hope you enjoyed it!)
Thank you for the comparison. Love seeing what you can push out creative wise but also the capabilities and what your eye catches. Would love to see more comparison of you trying out the cinematic mode but adjusting the f-stop to get less of that "blur/glow" from the default setting. Also would love to see a lenses video, I am a sucker for technical and output of creative vision.
Another great video! Thanks. Being a former (and likely future) Canon EF guy and now a Sony Gmaster guy, I am enamored by how good the iPhone can look. I have a 12 and am very tempted to go to a 13. My main issue is the motion (choppy/fast shudder as you mentioned) and the compression artifacts. It is a game-changer though when you want to grab a couple quick b-roll shots between interviews. It really adds to the arsenal.
Great video Gene! Would totally love to see you do a video on lenses. I enjoy whatever you post though to be honest!
I was just binging your content! No way!
P.S. with cinematic mode it might work better if you used a lower setting instead of the f1.4. Like maybe f2/2.8 which should make the negative effects less visible. Or at least it works much better like that in portrait mode. Good luck!
Hope you enjoyed shooting this latest segment in beautiful Calgary, Alberta. Looks like you picked a warm week to do it. Too bad we missed you, would have loved to show you around town.
Great video… This was really helpful.
The thing with Cinematic mode is you need to really reduce the intensity for it to look decent.
I got the 12 pro max months before they announced the “better camera” on the 13. I was pretty mad but this video comforts me. I can see the improvements but honestly the footage is comparable to my 12 pro max. When you’re close enough to a subject I can also achieve shallow depth of field. Cinematic mode reminds me of the artificial background blur on my zoom calls. Horrendous
Yeah…it’s good to do research on the specific phone that you want to get, compare, and contrast with another. While the iPhone 13 Pro max does have features, hardware, etc that by themselves are in fact better than the previous iPhone 12 Pro Max’s. If you don’t need a certain feature, then paying extra money is not necessary. Take for instance the new iPhone SE 3, it clearly harbors an amazing processor and is 5G capable. And have you seen the price?.
Yes, please! I’d love to see a ‘which lenses for which situation’ video! ☺️🤞🏻
I just watched your tripod video from 2 years ago, and then rewatched a bunch of older videos. I must say I do miss your old outro with the iconic Potato Jet theme song.
Great show! Thank you!
Dude! You totally nailed it with this video. Excellent job!
Sweet vid!! Hope you enjoyed Calgary, it's dope seeing all those familiar spots
Nice one gene. Keep it up. I see your in the zone to be the gene i see few years ago.
Dude I just wanted to say I love your videos, and I've learned so much from them, thank you! And love from México 🇲🇽❤️
Seeing Calgary in this vid was a cool surprise! Hope you had a good time here!
I positively love your energy!!!
Do you want potato jet to talk in depth about lenses or do you want him to do more dumb stuff?
Yes.
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!!
That fact that you have the Tamron 35-150 just amazes me. Because I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for it to ship.
Love your videos Potato Jet!
You've helped us SO MUCH when it comes to choosing camera gear!!! We knew virtually nothing before watching your videos a year or two ago.
Did you know that you can shoot in log and change a host of other features, like the shutter speed, using the paid version of Protake? We think the iPhone 13 Pro Max really begins to compete with our current camera (the Canon EOS M50 Mark II) because of the iPhone's quality paired with all of the options available through that app. We're still getting our feet wet when it comes to filming, so we don't have anything to visually back up our ideology, but hope to put out some cool projects soon.
Keep up the good work bro, and thank you for all of the content!
P.S. You really do look like the kid from UP! We know you love to hear it... (haha).
Salute and God bless you!
I'd love to see a lens video where you describe what lenses (or focal lengths, really) are good for what type of shots.. maybe what some of your favorite shots / lens combos are! (every time any one does this I always learn something)
Wow even though i could tell the difference in the previous shots when you switched the lens, what a massive difference
🤣 LMAO
That bridge looks amazing, it’s like a Bullet train!
yes, please lenses a must do video. thanks Jet keep up the good work
Yees go for lens choices!! Im struggling what lens should I buy next!
I love this guy's videos. Have learnt so much from him
@TEXT THE TELEGRAM @potato_jet 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣i never knew there was another potato jet with 2 Subscribers. please guys beware of people like this.
Obviously another great Video!! Most important thing was this was in Calgary & surrounding! So awesome to see it in one of your videos! So impressive you braving a few days of Canadian winter!!
& definitely, DEFINITELY, ABSOLUTELY do the video where you go into detail on lens!!! Don’t worry ADHD is a superpower
Loved this format of how to tell the difference between systems with a test to see if a layman can tell. It really makes you understand the good and bad.
Yes do a lens comparison. I'm near the point where I'm going to buy a another len for me A7c. I'm mostly using a F 1.8 35mm prime.
Gene I would love to see a video with an updated camera set up for beginners. I recently became an uncle and would love to start taking our family pictures on something more high quality than just my iPhone 13! Thanks
Verdammt 🙂! Hey great video again! Thanks :) And yes, please make the video about lenses ... what lens do you recommend for the 4/3's GH5/s/MK II GH6?
I know you asked if we had questions about lenses... what I would LOVE to see is a video for the best ultra-wide THUNDERBOLT monitor for MacBook Pro's. Lots of videos out there that equate USB-C to thunderbolt but nothing that's truly informative. Thanks for everything you do Gene! 🙏🏽🙏🏽
An in-depth lens video would be interesting! Great video love your channel
I agree with Potato Jet, I used the color and details of the sky to distinguish most of them (the C70 ones).
Signature prime vs photo primes would be interesting! Softer lens like K35 would be easy to distinguish but sharper cine lens vs still lens would be a little tricky especially if you don’t do a focus pull.
That video about lenses sounds nice!
These videos always make my day!
Love this, guys! Hey, I just ordered the DJI mic system, so what happened with the audio in your sponsor shoot…?
also low-pressure sodium lights ( like the ones used in street lights ) are the Achilles’ heel of Sony cameras . they have this problem since day one and its still there
you can see the difference in the white snow and her skin tones , on the sony everything shifts to green
I don't know what it is but I can almost always pick out iphone images, especially when it's of sky.
It's processing is quite jarring.
I got pretty much 100% of them right although I was surprised how close the low light images looked.
Everyone is saying you need to put the F-Stop between f5.6 - f8 on cinematic mode but the key is movement and motion, while increasing the F-Stop does help for static shots where the subject isn't moving because you have time to analyze the image and see whats wrong with it but movement and motion blur hides it
Yes please, a video of camera lenses would be really interesting! 👏
Now do the same thing with iPhone accessories for example from moment or similar(nd filter, additional lenses) to see how far the phone can really be pushed. I’d love to see that
Great video. I would love to see a video of you reviewing lenses, specifically the Tamron 11 - 20mm f2.8. Please and thank you.
The "Verdammt" from Dylan at 02:02 is pronounced 100% as in German and without any accent. Love it!
Please more of this.
Yeah make videos on lenses for the some of the older iPhone 11 to newer versions for those balling on a budget 🙌🏾🔥
Please do the lens video! I'm highly interessted in your opinions and what to look for
Great comparison!! You mention filmic can’t shoot log in prores. True. But it does offer HLG/bt2100 gamma with bt2020 colorspace (aka “prores 2020”) which should give you more flexibility in post. Resolve color space transform works on it, but the default tone mapping/color management setting doesn’t so it takes some manual effort.
Love your videos man!
A guide of newly Sony lenses for mirror less would be nice, since personally I’m more now into the “use the less amount of gear/weight” mode
Fantastic video as always Gene! We would love to see you do the video on the lenses and what to look for in them as they are incredibly expensive but critically important investments. the more knowledge available and your opinion around them would be great. Your dumb stuff is always welcomed entertainment as well, and bound to make someones day with it!
I’m liking the new setup
Yea that’s the thing about these tests. Yo the trained eye you can tell pretty easily by the lack of motion blur, weird software stabilization vs actually handheld look and overall sharpness/ exposure of the final image. iPhone footage is always pushed in terms of contrast, saturation and sharpness. Also when your editing two clips to look similar and blend together that goes a long way in masking which tool is actually used
Yes!!! I want to learn more about lenses!
Great video, yeah I’d like to see one about lenses
Great video as always, may i ask what set up you are using to film the review shot? I'm guessing a A7siii? but with what kind of lens?
Also, what color temperature is your softbox set to?
really cool shots, thumbs up.
Yes, please help with Lens selection and correct lens for different types of shots
I left Calgary and it's winters behind long ago. Zero regrets. 😃
Hi Gene, do you plan on doing any follow up video about your choice of base level Macbook? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts going from the fully spec'ed one 👍
So yes, you should definitely make the video (which lens when)
For me, its the sharpness in the darker areas that shows its an iPhone. It is incredible tho how far phone cameras have come. We're not saying to use them for a shoot, but it is incredible to think you have this phone camera with you all the time when quickly need it without all the gear.
Yes! More lens videos!
Yeeeeees! I want lenses video! And please include info from live streaming standpoint.
WOW ! Great video !!! :-) Yes please...do a lense comparison video !!! 👍👍🙏🙏
When the audio files for the sponsored segment were corrupt, was that from the DJI mic or something else? Was considering picking one up so that'd be nice to know haha
I would love to know too.
Yes would like to know how the DJI mic's are working out have pre-ordered some
Great video! Definitely would like a good lens comparison video for those who are looking into the canon eos r or Sony a74. Maybe four lenses should be compared on full frame cameras like the 16-35mm 2.8, 16-35mm 4.0, 24mm 1.4 (canon), and the 14mm 1.8 (Sony). I feel as if these lenses would be great choices for those who may want to invest in better mid tier cameras and want to venture into photography, videography, or both!
Awesome & Thanks :)
Thanks for the comparison. I been thinking about this; as I’m making all my vlogs/ videos on my iPhone 13 pro max, Works great; however will it look better if I buy a camera 📷, if using the first lens you showed 16-35 then The difference is small. But if it’s the 35-100 then it’s much better.
What camera and lens do you recommend to buy for great videos?? Thanks
**On lenses** - Would love an episode on top 3 lens recommendations for beginner RUclipsrs (for talking heads and B-roll) - Thanks, love your channel..!
Quick question about lenses, if you had 1 lens to choose from that had a big aperture and was a cinema prime lens that was 35mm and was the lens you would have to stick with for a while, which one would it be?
Thinking of shifting from Fujifilm X-T3 to Sony A7 and the f2.8 zooms for work stuff. Keeping a second Fuji body plus the primes I’ve gotten over the years for personal stuff. Mainly shooting photos, minimal video. Thoughts?
To an extent it’s about the lenses. You are stuck on wide angle for the iPhone because that’s the highest quality one. You can get super wide or telephoto with a cinema camera. And you can get natural shallow depth of field. Though I think that is the case with all photo or cinema lenses - except bottom basement ones.
Dude!!! Yes please!!! Lens videos would help so much, maybe geared more toward film making rather than vlogging. Some suggestions for lenses to use in different shots in order to learn some basic cinematography would be so much appreciated.
Video on lenses sounds great🙌
Definitely would love a lens video!
Biggest tell for me was motion blur. Light chaser pro filter setup and filmic pro to manually control shutter speed would do wonders!
The biggest giveaway honestly is that it looks like there is no ND filter of any kind used on the iPhone, there for the shutter speed defaults to cranking up, and you lose basically all motion blur. Even the close up shots that accentuate the bokeh were just a little too crispy whenever there was any kind of movement.
Would love to see a video on lenses,
even some tips er something for beginners like me!
Yes a lenses video will be great!
2:02 "Verdammt" hahah greetings from Germany/Austria 😂
if you take the fstop for the cinematic mode down to f4 or f8 it looks much better and less noticeable
Hi Nagata, I'm an admirer of your vlog and I would love to see a tutorial demonstrating a good setup for filming with iphone 13 pro. Lenses, ways to connect to the monitor, cables, battery life, file sizes, etc, etc.
thanks
Nice to see you made it to Calgary 😊
Please do more videos on which lenses to use for cinematic videos and shory films
Hi can you tell me if you can do this with a Samsung S 21Ultar? Would I need new software do do this or just go with what is in the cell phone, please let me know.
Do you think Canon will make M50 III with proper 4k video? Or rather apsc based on RF mount? Or nothing and apsc will be ditched?
I see Calgary! Hope your time here was great, hope you ate well and met some great folks. It's not always that cold, I promise. Come back!
