I worked for the first HD video production company in the US back in 91/92. At the time, a single 3-tube camera and 1” open reel recorder cost well over $500k (in 91 dollars). What is most astonishing to me is that I am now able to acquire a higher quality image in such a tiny form factor for a fraction of the cost, without requiring an engineer (or three).
I think Apple is really missing an opportunity to create the BEST set up. Imagine your phone on a MagSafe tripod with a thunderbolt cable connected to your MacBook Pro... it's like a mini studio in a back pack. Set up 3 phones for different angles and you can do interviews, etc.

Meanwhile here i’m with my iphone 13 pro max (256gb) and it really is embarrasing this lightning port, this was my first iphone ever also (i moved from long time android usage), but this fcking slow lightning port is absolutely one of the worst of iphones negative sides, and this came with usb-c to lightning port cable, like wtf, it doesn’t even make sense, only made things harder, that I can’t charge this phone on anywhere else than on my single macbook 61wat charger (which has usb-c port) atm, I have to still go and buy like usb-A to lightning port to be able to charge on my car etc ffs…

Yeah, it is a really good workflow they’ve setup… until you’re ready to transfer from iPhone to Mac, haha. Everything feels lightning fast… but the lightning port itself. Question: Does a M1 handle ProRes 422 HQ well? Or do you have to use a M1X to be able to work with it?
@babyhammurabi on my 512gb I can record about 85min of 4K ProRes422 HQ in filmic pro. Dropping down to 422 and 422LT that number goes up to about 120mins and 150mins respectively. That’s a decent amount of storage space for one or two shoots, depending on the kind of work you’re doing.
What’s good is ProRes if it would take you 1 hour to transfer a 5 minute clip over that USB 2 lighting cable?How Apple could release a ‘Pro’ phone with a 10 year old connectivity?

Personally, I am big fan of the beige colors of the phones and watches and would absolutely love to see this color available for all of their products, not as a replacement to silver or space gray, but as a new addition to the lineup. Love ProRes on my iPhone 13 Pro 512GB with Filmic Pro and Zhiyun Smooth 4 gimbal. But I loathe, loathe getting the content off the iPhone and onto my 14” MacBook Pro M1 Max. Decided to add Atomos Ninja V to my Panasonic LUMIX GH5 for ProRes and iPhone as a b-roll camera.
I was lured by the z flip3 but the poor battery made me order a 13 pro and thamkfully the 512gb model. Now apple needs to ditch the lightenIng connector
Transferring files into and out of iphone and iPad is the most frustrating thing. So slow, complicated, and buggy. The only way I see fit is wirelessly between cloud services & online transfers but it's horrible and unreliable. If anyome has tips over the best ways to transfer large photo and video files please let me know. For his tip on using Prores Hq for 10 bit does the same apply on other cameras between all-i and long-op?
They need to update the Lightning connector to support USB 3. If I’m not mistaken, the 2017 iPad Pro supports USB 3 through its lightning connector. Why can’t an iPhone support it 5 years later?
Rene, is that pro res video you showed side by side starting around the 5:04 mark of the video more choppy than the HEVC video? Why does that happen? I understand the footage is much larger and more difficult to save to storage, but I didn't think it might affect the stability of the video. Or maybe it's just a placebo and they're both the same?
Fitting Thunderbolt into a phone might be a tad much (needs controllers, PCIe lanes, etc). But not putting way faster speeds into Lightning or USB-C is frustrating now that we have ProRes

Looks like an ElectroVoice RE20, a very standard broadcasting mic used in radio stations for decades. Sounds like he’s also feeding it through a touch of EQ and some compression.
As you said in the video, this is really pointless if everyone continues to use RUclips as their primary output. Does it help in post? Yes, but only if you have a lot of post to do.
Seems like it’s more likely that Apple will remove wired connections entirely on their phones than put in a Thunderbolt connection. Also, the iPhone 13 has Wi-Fi 6 which should be around twice as fast as the USB-2 based lightning. I don’t have any hard numbers, but maybe 700 Mbps to maybe 400 Mbps seems about right.

It's all well and good but where does a consumer-level user store all this stuff? I'm already at 4TB or family pics and vids. Apple don't offer anywhere near enough in their iCloud packages and who's interested in spending thousands on NAD back ups?
You are all so silly. ProRes isn't pro resolution, ProRes is a compressed format. Uncompressed video is unaltered, full-resolution video. Each frame of video is fully represented in its purest form. Compression tries to interpret the same video but in a smaller file size.
Just got my new iPhone 13pro on Monday and honestly, might start trying out ProRes and happy cause the video and photos it takes feel far better than an on my old iPhone 11 And plus more memory!
It's a huge amount of overhead. Older devices don't have the storage systems to handle it (can't write the data fast enough to disk for 422 HQ) but it looks like future devices will keep getting better!
@@ReneRitchie the power being unleashed in these new devices (iPhone, iPad, MacBook) is just incredible - such rapid changes with the new silicon. Hard to fathom where ProRes will be in 3yrs on further optimized devices. 🤯
@@wellszhou8286 airdrop is fast, but very unreliable. It just simply doesn’t work about 30% of the time, requiring rebooting of the phone or toggling airplane mode. Cabled connections are significantly more useful.
I’m gonna take this with a pinch of salt as you can have a small specialist camera with ProRes instead of using an iphone. This could be Apple paying for advertising for the iPhones as the cameras are very much from Sony.

You know, some video professionals come on this channel as guests and their video and audio quality is horrendous. This guest, on the other hand, really did an excellent job of having great video/audio from his side and so we could concentrate more on the message than horrendous quality that occurs with some other guests (not Gruber; his video/audio, which I understand was from the new MBP, was excellent as well). And this guest really sounds like he knows what he's talking about lol.
Transferring a prores video to my computer killed my interest! Am done. Apple crippled the iPhone by not giving a usb type c or thunderbolt in iPhone. Prores is useless this year.

Creating huge files on an iPhone needs a faster port to get the files off the phone.
They need to update the Lightning connector to support USB 3. If I’m not mistaken, the 2017 iPad Pro supports USB 3 through its lightning connector. Why can’t an iPhone support it 5 years later?
This makes ProRes available for students and makes it more convenient. Hope there's a 13 way back when i was still a student. 🙏

If you record 1 hour of pro res on your phone. It will take 2.5 hours to transfer it to your editing machine. Absolute madness

@@sonarun Airdop is not “fast” it’s about as slow as USB 2.0, maybe slightly faster depending on file type. The iPhone needs USB-C period.

You know, some video professionals come on this channel as guests and their video and audio quality is horrendous. This guest, on the other hand, really did an excellent job of having great video/audio from his side and so we could concentrate more on the message than horrendous quality that occurs with some other guests (not Gruber; his video/audio, which I understand was from the new MBP, was excellent as well). And this guest really sounds like he knows what he's talking about lol.

Transferring a prores video to my computer killed my interest! Am done. Apple crippled the iPhone by not giving a usb type c or thunderbolt in iPhone. Prores is useless this year.

@@ReneRitchie Yes but once it‘s here it will spread like wildfire since the is no license BS going on with it. I think NASA used it even for the recent Mars footage although I‘m not 100% sure on that.
