- The Thunderbirds were officially activated on this day in history 67 years ago, June 1, 1953, as the 3600th Air Demonstration Team at Luke AFB, Arizona. The McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II flew for the Thunderbirds from 1969 to 1973. During this time, the Blue Angels flew the F-4J Navy version making the Phantom II the only aircraft to display the thrill of aviation for both teams.

Was a crew chief on a phantom in the mid 70’s, love this jet
I was a crew chief on the F-4E in the mid 80s at Seymour Johnson.
When F4-E's first came out the radar wasn't finished. The 33 TFW at Eglin got them so they could do the phase 4 testing. These aircraft had no radar in the nose, Just ballast. Those aircraft became Tunderbirds. The one at Pima Air Museum is an F-4E I worked on as a Weapons Mechanic in the 40th TFS at Eglin AFB.
The F4 looks awesome in Thunderbird colors.
Never seen a Phantom so clean, ours were always straked with caked hydraulic fluid leaking fuel and old grease.
And stunk of burned jet fuel and hot metal.
The first USAF demonstration team was the Acrojets in 1949. There were also the Skyblazers before the thunderbirds
I so thoroughly enjoyed watching this mini-documentary that I forgot I clicked in the first place hoping to see a Mach 2 sneak pass !
Got to see the F-4 Thunderbirds performance while stationed at Homestead AFB Florida in late 69
I visited Pima air museum in 2019 from South Carolina. Great museum.
My daughter went to the University of Arizona and I went to the Pima Air and Space museum every year when I went to visit and enjoyed it every time.
I've got a model of a Thunderbirds F4. It's hanging in formation with models of the T-birds F100 and F16 from the ceiling in my "man-cave". They all came as a set in one box.
Post a video of your man cave. Would love to see it.
The F4 was by far the best demostration aircraft. When you had 4 F4's taking off in afterburner at the same time it rattled the devil in hell.
Saw the Thunderbirds some time back in the mid 90sat the Hillsboro airport.
When I was a kid in the 70's there was a McDonald's in Cutler Ridge Fl (not far from Homestead AFB). They did the decor of that MD's in USAF Thunderbird theme. It was really cool. A huge F-4 was on the ceiling hung inverted. Others models and posters spread around the place. I loved going there. Anyone from that area old enough to remember the place?
Beautiful markings - I didn’t know they ever flew Phantoms
Oh yeah, first ones in the classic red white and blue livery!! I missed the Phantoms, saw the T-38s once at my first airshow and then...THE F-16!!!!! Seen these half a dozen times!

When both the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds flew the F-4 Phantoms 👻...it was tremendous..after they switched..it never was ths same
I saw the F4 thunderbirds at Mather AFB perform in the early 70’s
Interesting the T-birds started in 1953, and then the flags on the sides represent all the countries (and territories) they performed in. Look Closely you will see Hawaii and Alaska with American flags with them, because those two states were NOT states but territories in 1953.
Very interesting👍🏻
The F4 has,, & will always be,, my all time fav. Jet fighter / bomber.
The AF thunderbirds were built specifically for the Thunderbirds. They did not have the Weapons Control System, Radar, bombing system, missile system. When the Thunderbirds quit flying them they were used exclusively for pilot training. A few Thunderbirds were standard E's that replaced damaged Thunderbird aircraft
I was at George AFB when we received one of the ex-thunderbird aircraft. We had to reinstall the radar and other systems. We later learned the airframe was bent from over Gs.
Rochester NY eh. I've watched the THUNDERBIRDS over many years performing at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Base. We could also have our own personal show as they fly low, in formation right over backyards at Tuscarora Nation. Late 70's early to mid 80's. Never forgot a F16 THUNDERBIRD two ship flying across a big field in back of our home! One Bird was inverted! They would tilt a wing as flew past, slow and LOW. we could see the pilots so clearly as they turned their heads towards us. sadly and unfortunately we witnessed two Blue Angel's in a midair while we were at the base in mid 80's. My mom was a Rosie The Riveter at Bell aircraft during WW2. We had VIP seating right near runway at Carborundum area. So the midair happened right above us. So sad one pilot lost his life. Zero injuries on the ground. Two mushroom clouds at each end of runway. ne desit virtus ducti amore patriae.
Nice planes 👍
Looks like F16s toward the end of the video. Pretty cool tho. Thx!
Saw the Thunderbirds flying F-4's at Norton AFB, San Bernardino CA. '73 or '74 ? not sure.
This would be a F 4E, GE J79-17 engines. Runs best on JP 8. Sorce: USAF Areo repair, Crash Rcovery, 20 years I served. Picked up and repaired many jets.
Got to see the t-birds at Whiteman in the early 70's.
Great video but Blue Angels flew the Hellcat and first demo 1946 and thats 3 years before the Air Force stepped up finally stepped up 😉
If you made the Mach meter peg at 2, you received a Mach 2 pin. FL500 and full mil power. Mach 2 would be reached. - If you can find the others accounts, they took the Phantom just a little over FL680.. oops...
0:43 * the friggen FAA man.......... geeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz!!!!*
One of my biggest disappointments...I went to see the Thunderbirds at Hancock Field in Syracuse NY in 1976...and they flew T-38's Bummer.
BEAUTIFUL !
Such a strange feeling though and lame how the F-4 Phantom being Both the Angels And Thunders so Brief And Being The Most Powerful Craft in the Teams respective history !
It's just a shame To me that there hasn't been Any more Powerful Jets for Representing the Teams Exactly like them And that they've kept the most recent jets for Far too Long ie F-16s & F-18s🤷♂️
I would Love to see the F-15 as Thunderbirds as they would Be Just as powerful and Iconic as the F-4s or F-35 🤷♂️
Now with BlueAngels upgrade to Basically a better version of the same Craft they use Which is Cool, I just hope they Don't use them For Too Long !
Need some variety to Airshows !!
I've got a nice poster of an F15 that's red, white and blue. It's not a Thunderbirds plane but it still looks real nice.
Not sure the white paint had anything to do with Mach 2 flight. Or maybe the Navy Blue Angels aren’t as fast. 😂
อเมริกา-มหาอำนาจ...แน่นอนอยู่แล้ว.....หาใครทาบได้ยาก ๆ
What a bunch of party poppers the FAA are banning super sonic flights at air shows
"Using a white base that could hold up to the heat and friction of Mock 2"?? Why isn't the SR-71 white? I goes twice as fast??
It wasn't white because of Mach 2 friction - they never went that fast. Instead it was to hide the hodge-podge of different metallic shades of aluminum and titanium alloys that made up the skin. Previous aircraft had skins was made of one type of aluminum and could left as natural metal.
@@johnh2410 That's not what the retired Blackbird pilot that golfs at the course I work at tells me??
@1:10 you said 1962. You meant to say 1972.
@Galileo7of9 My 72 reference was to the Demo team. In your details you forgot to include SEAD on the mission roles.
@Galileo7of9 I understand that, I had a bit of divided attention at the time. I'm very well aware of the F4 development history and evolvement. 69 to 74 on the Thunderbirds yes I did see them twice as a yootz. Grew up to actually work on them for a little bit as well. The video did show Thunderbirds at the time mentioned. Anyway I'm not arguing about anything else on this video. Many times a lot of these presentations are either missing information or are out of sequence. So yes the G model was made later.
@Galileo7of9 I think I already acknowledged that., And here you are patrolling 6 months later.
@Galileo7of9 BS, I already commented and you can't leave it alone. Never mind that you okay you are 6 months late on your comment. Yeah like a white night on the issue. You want a debate and argue it sounds like one to me. It's fly shit in the pepper to everyone else in the world but you apparently
@Galileo7of9 as I said it's already been mentioned, you're very late pointing it out and now your gas lighting. The time to say something has long passed, I barely remember it, ever heard major on the minor? Give it a rest. I guess now you can go check out all my other comments in the archives and see what you can come up with. There's always straw man as well.
Not the first airforce display team, the French were first.
"Thunderbird", a cultural appropriation if there ever was one. Few native Americans, if any, have flown in a Thunderbird demonstration team.
MAGA!!
A female Tbird pilot???? Why?
Because she has the skills buddy!
Js and Ss marines 77 to 81 just before 18s
