Tom Wilkes of Guard-Lee, Inc. talks about the X-15 replica project as you watch it get loaded up to the NB-52's pylon that actually carried the X-15 during the record setting program. These flights achieved Mach 6.72 (4,534 mph) and an altitude of 354,200 ft.
Consolidated B-24J Liberator
Просмотров 36014 дней назад
The most produced multi-engine aircraft of all time has very few survivors. A few of those that did pass the test of time have an interesting story having flown for the Allies in WWII and then the Indian Air Force until the late 1960s. The B-24 Liberator at Pima Air & Space Museum has two paint schemes for this reason. Here's that story. Audio courtesy of the @damcasterspod and special thanks t...

PBY-5A Catalina Amphibious Airplane
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
The most produced flying boat in the world with over 3000 built, the PBY Catalina was a major Allied asset in WWII. The PBY-5A version of the aircraft introduced an amphibious capability to the Catalina allowing it to takeoff from either land or water. Once they left military service, many Catalinas were bought for civilian use and could be found all around the world as everything from private ...

Director of Collections Andrew Boehly highlights the Douglas A-20G Havoc (43-9436) on display. This rare warbird spent 50 years in a swamp before becoming one of only a handful that remain from over 7,000 built. The prototype first flew on October 26, 1938. It became a successful attack aircraft for many Allied nations in WWII. Audio by Matt Bone at @damcasterspod with aerial footage from Lucas...

Beautiful work, Tom. I worked with the founder Ed Guard when he first started the business 40 years ago with Doris Lee. We built full scale Apollo, Gemini, and Mercury spacecraft for the Oklahoma Air and Space Museum. That got it all started. It is so good to see that you have kept the business going strong.

I visited the Pima Air & Space Museum in 2018 and wondered where the NB-52A was. I finally spotted it in the distance; off the museum grounds and in restoration. Having followed the program as a kid who built models of each aircraft, I was disappointed that I didn't get to see the real thing while I was there. But I will definitely return to see the restored NB-52A with the X-15 replica mounted. That will be a thrill!

The North American X-15A1 spurred my interests in aviation, rocketry, and space travel back in the early-mid 1960's. I have about two dozen models of the all three versions of the X-15. You made this 70 year old guy very happy. I can't wait to see it on my next trip to the museum.

My father flew on them as tunnel gunner and crew chief out of Gosfield. Some wild stories. He had great respect for his plane. His last one, Tallywhacker II, was retired after 100 missions, for metal fatigue!

I spent a lot of weekends in this bird with a gentleman named Warren Fink. We did a lot of cleaning inside this bird when it was Shoot Your Covered as it was in your picture of it backed up to the hanger. Man those were some good old days for sure. I moved to Ohio in 2000 and always wondered why there was a name change from the Shoot Your Covered scheme. Thanks for the background on this great ol Lady.

As a kid I got to see the Thunderbirds in their F-4E Phantoms in the early 70's as well as seeing the Blue Angels in their F-4J Phantoms at the Abbotsford airshow. Both were very cool and impressive, and especially for a little kid.😊

A few days before this video was posted I passed this rig parked off the side of AZ93 a couple miles from Hoover Dam while driving from Vegas to Phoenix. I thought I was half-crazy seeing a wingless F-117 parked on the side of the road, apparently unattended. Now I know.

Notice how the leading edge of the plane is missing. It's part of the "propulsion system", which is still classified top secret (Thomas Townsend Brown)

    • @darrengladstone3159
