    I got into Oblivion at a time where I was stuck at home all summer with no real way to contact people. I know it's pathetic to admit, but Oblivion actually substituted for my human interaction for that summer. The characters were so well-realized that I felt like I was engaging with real people, and for that, I will always cherish it

    • @Bauglir100

      It's not pathetic, it's totally understandable. The world in Oblivion feels so alive. Especially compared to the earlier TES games, where all the NPCs that aren't trying to kill you are either pacing around aimlessly or standing perfectly still in one spot for all eternity. Oblivion's AI isn't as complex as it could've been, but it's still very impressive even by today's standards.
      And since I like to keep in touch with some of the game's voice actors like Wes Johnson and Craig Sechler, it feels extra special to interact with the characters that are voiced by them.

    • @Xeno_Solarus
      @Xeno_Solarus 5 лет назад +9

      Hmmmm, well I don't think that's a valid reason for why Oblivion is better than Skyrim. I mean, compare it to other games like Dark Souls. A much darker and stressful air to it, yet I probably rate that game higher than almost any other game I've played. (Not counting Chrono Trigger because that game will be forever #1) But your example is a great way to voice your opinion!

    • @Bauglir100
      @Bauglir100 5 лет назад +78

      Skyrim is a great game, but it takes itself too seriously. I know that there's a lot of crap going on in the game that calls for a serious tone, but it's just too cold and grim, like it's trying to be the next Game of Thrones. I like how in Oblivion, there's still a lot of urgency in the game, but also plenty of room to relax and goof around.

    • @Xeno_Solarus
      @Xeno_Solarus 5 лет назад +11

      @@Bauglir100 I don't know why being serious is considered a demerit in terms of the game's quality and standing, I mean sure, it could impact personal opinion, but objectively it doesn't make it worse.
      Oh, and just to clarify, I'm not a Skyrim fanboy or anything. I actually vastly prefer Oblivion, as it is my first and favorite ES game. The only thing I dislike is the levelling system. Ugh. As soon as I get a computer, mods are gonna fix that right up.

    • @Bauglir100
      @Bauglir100 5 лет назад +30

      @@Xeno_Solarus It isn't necessarily a demerit. As I said, there's a lot of stuff in Skyrim like the main quest and the civil war that warrant a more serious tone. But even most of the side quests end up being so stale and repetitive because they're mostly the same fomula, not helped by the fact that almost all of them have an intrusive sense of urgency.
      Even the Sheogorath quest doesn't have the same absurdity and humor that his quests in earlier games had, and it was more or less a rehash of Oblivion's "Through A Nightmare, Darkly" quest. The Sanguine quest was just you dealing with the aftermath of some crazy stuff you apparently did, but we never actually got to see the crazy stuff while it was still in progress, much less take part in it.

    • @Xeno_Solarus
      @Xeno_Solarus 5 лет назад +12

      @@Bauglir100 You make a great point there. I know I've had a lot more fun playing the side quests in Oblivion than I ever did in Skyrim. Even the dlc are pretty far apart. I liked the dlc in Skyrim, my personal favorite being the vampire one because of that vampire woman (forgot her name, think it was Seria or something), but when you compare those to what Oblivion offered with the Sheogorath dlc, it's a no brainer which is better. My main point was just that a lot of people consider Skyrim worse because of it's seriousness, and I do agree to an extent, the NPCs in Skyrim don't make me laugh and bring as much fun as Oblivion's.

I loved the ability to knock enemies flying with that, provided that they were humanoid or smaller. Other than that, the only thing Oblivion had on Skyrim was the fame/infamy system. I liked how you could encounter bandits in caves and ruins who wouldn’t be hostile if your infamy status was high enough. It was almost like another faction.

In oblivion npcs would talk about everything, the news would react to your actions and people would acknowledge that you were the leader (not all but a notable amount) so you felt involved in the world.
      Where as skyrim thinks just happen, a dragon can land and you slay it and drain its soul in front of everyone, and they just walk off and ask if you pass the mead.

    • @jtjumperify
      @jtjumperify 5 лет назад +3

      Oh really? Because in skyrim, if I join the dark brotherhood or the companions the guards acknowledge it and when I join the Thieves guild, I can pay off guards. In oblivion after I saved Count Indarys's son from an oblivion gate and the count gave me a rare family relic, he didn't trust me to buy a house. In the oblivion thieves guild quest, me being arch-mage meant nothing in quest where I had to get the Icestaff. Aryarie still treats me like I'm a nobody in the fighters guild quest, even if I'm arch-mage. In Skyrim, if I kill one or both of Braith's parents, her dialog changes, based on that. In oblivion, how many questlines and quests offer you choices that effect the outcome? None that I can recall, but in Skyrim, you have quests like In My time of Need, where you can side with Saadia or the Redguards and you have the Namira quest and the Dagon quest, which both give you choices. In Oblivion, it's go do the thing, ok you did it or you failed. I think the only quest that ever gave me a choice in oblivion was clavicus vile's quest.

    Out of all the TES games I've played, Oblivion is my favourite. I have indeed played the game as a kid, but back then I just roleplayed in there and barely did any quests, lol.

    I totally agree with the novelty of NPC dialogue in Oblivion: their simple greeting would be enough to solicit a further investigation into their character (especially the odd "Back off or I'll turn your bones to ASH!" or the like), vs. in Skyrim where they would outright say EVERYTHING they have to offer while your character walks by, as if that's how natural conversation even unfolds (that really took away from the immersion in Skyrim).
    Quests were by far the best part of Oblivion, nearly 20 years and 10's of playthroughs after its release and I STILL haven't seen them all, nor explored the expansiveness of the World, vs. Skyrim where essentially every character will eventually do and see everything in the world.
    The one up that Skyrim has is definitely combat just for its feel, though the lack of blocking and diversity of spell strategies took away from the full experience.
    I know I'm like 2 years late on Commenting, but this video just showed up in my Feed, and I love all the analysis The Cantina has given on one of my favorite (and quite possibly one of the best) games of all time.

    • @fernandacappucci8412
      @fernandacappucci8412 2 года назад +2

      I just finished playing Skyrim again and I couldn't agree more. I did everything, went everywhere, met everyone, it's a great game and all but it's just so easy and plain. People complain about combat taking forever in Oblivion but that's what actually makes it exciting to travel and explore, I have to make sure I have enough items before heading out any city when I'm just starting the game, and up to level 10 or so, in Skyrim you regenerate everything so fast that even if you have the game on hard mode, most of the combat is usually a breeze, even if the feel is better, which it is, immensely better, it's just so...boring.
      This is subjective but I also kinda hate the way Skyrim looks, some textures are better, but the whole game has this HDR filter that makes everything, specially objects, look dark and dirty, Oblivion is way softer and even if it's outdated it just works better artistically. Oblivion's characters are funky, but even then I prefer them to the lack of variety in facial features that Skyrim has, Oblivion characters had a million different noses, brows, eyes...etc, not to mention it also has way much more height variety, the bosmer are tiny while the high elves are enormous. The fact that you can make crazy and ridiculous looking characters in the character creation proves this point further.
      All in all, Oblivion is to Morrowind fans, what Skyrim is to Oblivion ones. It was trying to sell fantasy role playing to the general public, but instead of focusing on having epic battles against powerful beings like Skyrim did, it cranked up the worldbuilding to 11, and in return, it makes the player a million times more engaged and invested in the game. It has countless charming characters and will have you laughing out loud very often, as well as make you feel tense and intrigued, there are very few times where the game isn't exciting, and it's usually only after you put a good amount of hours into it.
      I guess, in the end, it comes to preference, and time has shown that Skyrim and even Morrowind just sell a lot more than Oblivion does. But I'm really really thankful a game like this exists, and I wish more people appreciated ridiculous and fun games that don't take themselves awfully seriously. I also really like the fact that [spoilers], even though you're the one who does all the dirty work, Martin is the only one who can defeat Mehrunes Dagon in the end, everyone admires you for aiding him in his sacrifice, and that's so much more refreshing than just "oh wow it turns out I'm THE Dragonborn" right from the start. I just love Oblivion so much, I can't stop comparing it to Skyrim when I play the latter.

If all of you skills are lower than 50, well, you can't be the leader, doesn't matter wich guild, religion or house

      Je Vader And the Cantina did bring a lot of these criticisms up up in the past. Does Oblivion look crappy? Yes it does even back in 2006. Hell the graphics of Skyrim are a lot better but they’re still lacking by today’s standards as well. I do prefer Skyrim over Oblivion but I do acknowledge the things Oblivion did do better.

      Rock Marcus agreed. Yes Oblivion did a few things better than Skyrim, but those few things don’t make it “better” than Skyrim. Not better overall, anyway. Something else I remember from Oblivion, now that I think about it, I don’t think Oblivion had any quest glitches that ruined your save file, and thus any/future save files from then on, forcing you to either keep playing with the game glitched and ruined, load from a previous save, losing hours, days, weeks, or even months of progress, or start a new game/character from scratch. I’d say that was Skyrim’s biggest flaw, now that I think about it. If I started a new game in Oblivion, it was usually bcuz I wanted to and I was bored with my current character at the time. The only reason I ever HAD to start a new game with Oblivion was with my first couple of characters due to the fact that I didn’t know how to level up properly to max out my stats.

      @@anonymoussmartass5347 And in Oblivion, you didn't have to go through the starting dungeon all over again every single time you wanted to start a new character. Skyrim really messed up in that department.

      Jonathan Szuhai yes you do. Unless I missed something, you still have to go through the starting dungeon followed by the sewer after starting a new character in Oblivion.

    God I absolutely love Oblivion, played like millions of hours back in the day, and I still consider it the best in the series and the open world rpg genre, the charm the game has its unparalleled, its just a magical game, and it has the honor of having the best expansion ever made for a game: Shivering Isles; damn I friggin love that place!

    Quests in Oblivion are indeed fantastic and combat you mentioned is somewhat bearable. All story arcs throughout all Elder Scrolls games create a unique universe, which is a joy to explore. Bethesda included so many stories in the games that you can feel you've been to Tamriel, when you come to know all about it so well.

    Skyrim taking itself so seriously is it's biggest flaw imo. It really stunted some of the creativity that could've been.

    To be honest I prefer Skyrim over Oblivion mainly because Skyrim was my first Elder Srolls game and I was hypnotized by its beauty so it has a very special place in my heart I played Oblivion as well and loved it too but it just doest have the charm that skyrim has(in my opinion) but it IS a good game I enjoyed it very much especially the Shivering Isles DLC

    I love Oblivion so much. It always held my attention more than Skyrim. I used to live in a house with a big concrete basement and we had a widescreen TV and I would spend hours upon hours playing it down there.

    Started playing oblivion today, it’s very nice so far. The combat is nicer than Skyrim’s, and it feels like I have choices
