To defend the “Cho always cries” argument you should’ve simply quoted the passage in which Hermione literally explains to Harry and Ron why Cho always cries. Hermione explained all her feelings and Ron answered with “No one person can feel all that at once”. Then Hermione got angry and told him not everyone has the emotional range of a teaspoon. It was a very good explanation though

Hogwarts definitely needed some grief counsellors. Cho's boyfriend had just tragically died, so you can't blame the poor girl for constantly being upset and weepy. They'd been together for over a year, and her depression isn't a sign of weakness, but of realism.

The Problem wasn't that she was weepy. The Problem was that She was always weepy. I mean Harry just witnessed a mfkg full-blown Murder, that too just a few feet from him and yet you don't see him bawling every second. Cho in comparison only witnessed Cedric's Corpse, yet she was bawling the every minute she got. In addition to the trauma he faced, Harry in his 5th year was practically hounded, ostracized and labeled a loony liar. Cho again in Comparison was relatively Popular and had her friends with her. Hence she doesn't get any sympathy from me (atleast the Book Cho).

I think Cho and Harry could have worked out if they started dating at a different time. When they dated both of them were messed up over Cedric but in very different ways. Cho was sad and wanted to talk about it, and Harry was traumatized and ignoring it. Therefore, Cho came off as weepy to Harry and Harry came off as callous to Cho. It wasn't necessarily that their personalities were incompatible, it was that their ways of dealing with tragedy were incompatible.

I think it’s awful when people compare response to trauma’s. Everyone experiences things differently and yes this is fiction, but it’s really telling when someone judges someone for crying as a traumatic response fictional or not. Crying is a healthy coping mechanism, it’s a release of tension and anger and sadness and is much better than repressing your emotions or releasing them through unhealthy ways.
I lost my partner a few years ago and I remember being numb at some points and then other times crying till exhaustion. Sometimes now that sadness lingers within me.
Everyone goes through pain and trauma differently and I feel like people do not realise that. It’s very easy to judge someone for something when you’ve not experienced it yourself…
And lmao ppl love Draco and Snape and obsess over them and try and defend them at every turn but then immediately hate Cho who isn’t half as bad, morally as they are 💀😂

    • @clover2739
      @clover2739 Год назад +4

@Sad yeah people really hone in on Ron’s mistakes in goblet of fire and the deathly hallows and call him a bad friend and obviously it’s not great but it’s just being a normal teen, Ron always struggles with insecurity and usually has it more inwards and tries not to show it and would always be the first one to jump in to defend his friends, those 2 moments is just when it becomes too much and he has a moment of weakness but he still cares for harry and always worries and come straight back. I think the Weasleys in general get hated a lot for their negative traits but they’re realistic and the point of them in my opinion is that they try their hardest and they still have flaws but always come back and learn when they’re proven wrong.
No matter what people say Ron is a good friend, Harry loves Hermione a lot as well of course but there’s a reason why Harry is way more upset when Ron and him aren’t talking.

I do think the Harry-Hermione friendship was pretty unusual for Hogwarts in being both very close and completely platonic. I’m sure there were other casual male-female friendships, but none of them seemed to spend as much time as Harry and Hermione. There had to be tons of rumors that Harry and Hermione were romantically involved, and it’s not surprising that Cho felt that way. While they’re nowhere near “good” they do have a fascinating kind of glamour. Cho on the other hand is just a needy girl who (understandably) cries a lot. Also, we see things through Harry’s perspective, and he doesn’t have the highest opinion of her. Characters like snape at least have complexity while Cho was just a (again, understandably) weepy teen.

    • @syedarizvi7290

I also agree. I see many female characters getting hated for being who they are. For example, if a girl does not know how to fight but has other skills like being a sleuth or emotional support she will immediately be called "useless". If a girl has somewhat of a sassy personality she will immediately be called several expletives even though male characters might be downright nasty but that's somehow ok. (For some people that is, of course. I know a lot of others judge fairly.) I understand it could get annoying to read if a female character was SUPPOSED to be a fighter but she is incompetent and *always* losing (sometimes you need them to win) but hating a character for being who they were supposed to be is like hating a pen for being a pen instead of a sword.

It would have been nice if they had talked with each other after the rumors around Cedric and Voldemort had worn down and leave on better terms with each other. Also Cho and Harry's relationship failing felt like it was mainly due to bad timing with Cedric dying and both of them going through trauma at the time rather than say they were too similar or didn't have much in common. I would like to note that the actress that played Cho Chang one time said that she found a website that was dedicating to hating her and Cho Chang, which made her upset. The controversy of the character got even worse when people start debating if Cho Change is a racist character or not. Literally, her ethnicity is being debated because of her name. Along with the debate, people are wondering if JK Roweling is racist or not.

Harry, before coming to Hogwarts, had no friends due to the influence of Duddly and his gang, his shabby, hand-me-down clothes which were way too big for him, and probable lack of proper socializing due to the Dursley's constant bullying of him.
Ron was Harry's first real friend, who could relate to being poor, having used possessions, and being overlooked. Cho was his first crush, and he had no idea how to talk to girls. He was awkward in interacting with any girl he wasn't already friends with (basically, any non Gryffindor). He also couldn't communicate with Cho well, and their personalities clashed. Due to his communication issues, he was insensitive to Cho's feelings, which didn't help their relationship much.

In the books Ginny and Hermione were always going to get the boys, but Rowling needed to contrast these girls with Lavender Brown and Cho Chang. Part of the problem is that there was quite a bit of heat and chemistry in the movie kiss between Radcliff and Leung, (unlike with Bonnie Wright) but In the books Harry describes the kiss as "wet". Unlike in the books, director David Yates built up Cho's character and romance with Harry and then made her the traitor to the DA. After this build up and tear down, Cho (and her East Asian fans) really deserved a scene showing how she resisted Umbridge's interogation and then a moment with Harry where they could process their grief over Cedric's death and end their romance. Instead we got a Cho Chang that was a bad mix of Hollywood and Rowling's book, with no resolution, that left the fans despising her.

Certainly, there are some good things about Cho Chang's character that Harry Potter fans appreciate:
    1. She is a loyal friend: Cho was a loyal friend to Marietta, even though Marietta ultimately betrayed Dumbledore's Army. She also supported her fellow Ravenclaw Quidditch teammates and was friendly with her classmates.
    2. She is a skilled Quidditch player: Cho was the Seeker for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team and was shown to be a skilled player. She also helped Harry when he was practicing for the Triwizard Tournament, showing her dedication to the sport.
    3. She is brave: Cho was one of the first to stand up to Umbridge when she became Headmistress of Hogwarts, and she was willing to fight against the Death Eaters in the Battle of Hogwarts.
    4. She is a complex character: While Cho may have made some mistakes and had some flaws, she was also a complex character who had experienced loss and heartbreak. Her emotions and reactions were realistic and relatable, making her a more realistic portrayal of a teenage girl.
It's important to remember that every character in the Harry Potter series had both good and bad traits, and Cho Chang is no exception.

Yes but what if loyalty to Harry was not what took her back? What if there were loved ones that she had that were involved in the battle? What if she had very deep personal reasons for being a part of the battle and for going back that actually had nothing to do with Harry? This is what pisses me off about J.K. Rowling's writing. Everything is reduced to a binary. Defend Hogwarts and if you don't you are "bad" or "on the wrong side". Always defend Dumbledore no matter what sort of an arsehole he was, no matter how many children he abused and put in harms way, and no matter how much he groomed and exploited Harry. And if you don't defend Dumbledore, you are a bad person and on the "wrong side". Added to this binary, this lack of nuance about what perhaps may motivate people to do the things they do beyond basic hero worship, that really has, as an adult, annoyed me about Rollings writing. I mean, there are some minor characters in the story that could have had such a massively nuanced role and could have really brought some depth and new want to the story if they had been in the hands of a more skilled author. I believe that in the end, Cho Chang could have been one of them. And for the record, so could have her head of house.

Everyone reacts and copes from hardship differently so you can’t fault her for crying. However, I DO fault her for dating Harry when she clearly wasn’t ready. She needed time to grieve, process and mourn. I’m sure if she just told Harry she needed time he would understand, because if he truly like her, he would have waited for her. It’s a shame they couldn’t bond over Cedric’s death. I don’t blame her for wanting to ask questions as to exactly how Cedric died, but I do blame her for thinking of another guy during their DATE. No wonder Harry was angry. Again, she wasn’t ready for a new relationship, she just rushed into a new one. You might argue that she herself wasn’t aware she needed time or aware that Harry is receiving the rebound impression, but she must have known that taking Harry to a romantic cafe when really she just wanted info on Cedric was wrong. Thats the definition of leading someone on. That’s like looking forward to a date and then when you get there it’s actually an interview.
She should have told him straight out “ hey I need to talk about Cedric with you.” Get that out of the way, AND THEN go on a date. (And not the same place Cedric took her). Which was another mistake Cho made. Why would you go on a date to a place full of memories with Your ex when you’re trying to start fresh?? I’m sure there are many places they could have gone.
Also, I think her comment about turning down another guy was strange, as if she needed to provide proof to Harry how loyal she is to him or something. I could already see potential for trust issues. This shows us, the readers, how shaky their relationship is from the start. The fact that she said that just to get back at Harry for telling her he’s meeting Hermione shows how immature she is.
For anyone that dates Harry, they have to understand that he’s basically a celebrity. So of course there’s always going to be ugly comments and peer pressure. The question is Can she handle it??. Heck even the adults are in on the gossip, Just wait until you make The prophet front page! If your relationship is truly solid and you truly love each other, you will stick around no matter WHAT the world says. Like are your feelings for this person so shallow that you’re going to let comments from students get to you?
    Back to the rebound idea:
I think Cho had a genuine crush on Harry and didn’t mean to use him as a rebound in the beginning, but at some point HE WAS the rebound, the plan B, the extra. That point in time being Cedric’s death. If she had dumped Cedric and gone out with Harry while he was still alive, then Harry is not a rebound. That’s different. However she only came to him after Cedric died so yes she was seeing him as a Cedric 2.0. It’s a question of at what point in time are you looking.
My other problem with Cho is that she’s too controlling. Harry says he’s meeting Hermione, he even INVITES her to tag along, and she still gets all bent out of shape. It’s not like he was keeping it secret. It’s not like he gave Hermione a compliment, he literally was just meeting her. Is Harry not allowed to have friends now that he’s got a girlfriend?? Is he forever forbidden from having friends from the female species? Another red flag for trust issues. This proves to me that she doesn’t trust Harry at all despite him being completely open about the meeting.
I don’t like the idea of Harry and Cho together because now he can’t even be himself. The whole bit about Hermione giving Harry advice is ridiculous. He shouldn’t have to put on a pretense that he thinks Hermione is ugly or say anything bad about her. I won’t support bad mouthing your best friends just to falsely win someone’s heart. A relationship built on lies never lasts, so what’s the point in starting? Cho needs to accept Harry for all that he is including his real feelings towards others. Even if he did take Hermione’s advice, it’s not like she can babysit their relationship forever.
It is not Cho’s fault for the DA falling apart, but she is guilty of defending Marietta. When she’s arguing about this with Harry, she says “Well….we all got away didn’t we?” 🤦‍♀️ My girl that’s not the point! Your friend needs to face the consequences of her actions. My problem with Cho is that she excuses bad behavior because “She’s a lovely person really”. As if having a tragic enough situation is enough to excuse any behavior.
What annoys me most is Marietta sold all of them out including Cho, and she’s perfectly ok with this?? She’s going to overlook someone who stabbed her in the back like that?. Pssshh.
Cho is not a bad person but I definitely dislike her.

She was just having a hard time dealing with her grief, and Harry wasn't the right person for her, and she wasn't the right person for Harry during this time. Reading the books, I rather liked her, so I never understood why people always hated her so much.

I completely agree. I felt neutral about her when I first read the books at 11 but now I’m more positive. If you just look at her outside, she’s not that complicated but if you dive into her story, she’s really interesting which is something I love

I’ve never hated her character, I’m reading OOTP right now and I only thought that she acted like your average teenage girl (in regards to how the first date went) but that’s just immaturity and she can grow out of it. Aside from that, there’s plenty reason to have compassion for her story because as you mention, she probably felt really alone and had no one to talk to while Harry had two friends to unload on, which they even tell him “Please stop taking your anger out on us”. The movie kinda did her dirty because when I first watched it as a kid, I didn’t understand that she was under a potion when she ratted them out.

How could anyone be sure there is absolutely nothing between Harry and Hermione? When Hermione later dates Ron - the other best male friend, and even JKR said she wanted to change Hermione’s love interest to Harry. So there are always something between these male-female friendship and JKR admitted it. Ron and Krum were also got jealous or suspicious about Harry and Hermione, but Cho got the worst hatred. 🙄

My problem was never with Cho. It was with the relationship between her and Harry. I never thought they would work out, especially after their date. While they were both physically attracted to each other, they weren't compatible emotionally. They both needed different things that the other couldn't provide. The best thing to come out the relationship though was to it taught readers a lesson about crushes. Oftentimes when we have a crush, we develop an idealized perception of them that stems from us being physically attracted to them. We fail to see reality, so when we actually get to know the person oftentimes we're left disappointed because they don't meet the expectations we set up in our heads. Basically the moral of the story is to be careful when developing crushes. I think its a fitting lesson for the story of Harry Potter as he is experiencing his first relationship and crush alongside readers of the same age.

I think a lot of people look at Cho through the lens of adulthood but she’s a teenager. Emotions can be complicated enough even as an adult. I think she definitely needed a counselor or therapist but other than that, she’s fine.

I actually really like the Veritaserum change! Some things are misunderstandings. The fact that Harry didn't extend the same benefit of the doubt to Cho that she did to him was a really interesting way for the relationship to fizzle out, and it was a way to streamline their relationship's problems in the book, while giving Harry more ownership of his relationship's failures. I just wish the movie reflected on this aspect, or showed how Harry grew with his next relationship with Ginny.

for those who didn't read hp books: cho's FRIEND betrayed DA, but it's true that cho defended her with excuse that she was afraid of her mom losing her job, although ron's dad was in quite more danger of losing job. about hating harry's friends: she was just jelaous to hermione and offended by ron who thought she was fan of some quiddich team because they were the most succesful of all teams. beeing jelaous to hermione also explains bad date. and she cries because she is so much stressed and sad and remember: she isn't gryffindor to withstand all of this pressure.

@SonicCollectionsPs2Noises Yeah, that’s so petty and plus Cedric was more worried about what’s going on, not having a girl talk with Harry, Peter Petigrew and Voldemort. Plus he was more worried about getting themselves out of there or at least Harry and having his body returned to his parents. Romance was the last thing on his mind.

One thing I wonder about is why in the Deathly Hallows she was so eager to assist Harry to go to the Ravenclaw common room, she didn't even look at him the year before, and now all of a sudden she jumps at the chance to be alone with him, and is disappointed when she was denied that chance by his current girlfriend? I always thought she might've been trying to get back together with him

I have always felt neutral on her but she has moments that just felt. So BIG without actually being super impactful, and not in a great way. I very much understand her trauma being very recent and intense, but I just wish either the school, or herself would try to find healthy ways to cope. She was in a happy relationship, lost that person in a violent, sudden way. And longs for that joy she had again, and likely why she is so quick to get into relationships. But going to my phycology classes this can be SUCH a dangerous way to try and cope.
You are so susceptible to manipulating others without knowing it, and being manipulated to try and please the other person. As well as projecting what a relationship HAS to be. Each relationship is unique and there is not cut and dry way for love to be expressed and felt. And though she is using this as a way to cope which enables unhealthy behavior, she is at the same time keeping the wounds of the trauma open without addressing it. The first date shows this with her mentioning Cedric as much as the date itself. She needs to confide in someone but is not letting the other person consent to it, and is unable to unpack it due to the other person being put on the spot, and envious/angry that they have been able to find solace of some form. And it just loops and forms toxic relationships, both romantic and platonic, and digs a deeper and darker hole where the trauma bleeds into more parts of life than what already triggered PTSD and emotional responses.
Its a very real, and painful response to losing an important relationship from death. And it was never properly addressed in Cho's case, ending up severing some very important relations that she might've needed to get through her pain, that might've stayed if she coped/got help in a healthy way. The DA in some form was a case of positive and active coping, and even if it was small and not the most clean unpacking, seeing Cedric's photo brought resolve for improvement rather than depression and emptiness, and let Cho talk to Harry about Cedric WITH him. Instead of talking about Cedric TO him. It's a big difference

I hate to say it, but I think that writing about what you were talking about is well above J.K. Rowling's capabilities as an author myself. I mean, it would have been neat to see Joe actually go to an adult and cope healthily with her trauma. I have often address this in my fanfiction. I mean, she literally has the best head of house in the school, why didn't she go there? Well maybe she did, and maybe he helped her, and I would say that would be the case, but However, I think that writing about this is way above J.K. Rowling's level of skill when it comes to authorship. Oh don't get me wrong, she is a brilliant wordsmith. But good wordsmithing can often mask bad authorship.

I feel like sometimes fans, especially adult fans forget the students are teenagers.
Like Lavender gets a lot of hate because of being an overly clingy girlfriend to Ron but c'mon she's 16, people generally don't have life and relationships figured out at 16.
I can't hate her or Cho for who they are, their characters and decisions make sense to me

Until I saw the thumbnail, I honestly wasn't even aware of the hate that Cho received. Now I haven't read the entirety of the books so i couldn't say much about every book, but having watched the movies growing up, it took a bit for me to understand what happened when it was revealed Cho ratted out the DA. Of course that wasn't okay, but then as I got older, I finally understood the scene when Snape revealed that Cho was forced to rat them out via truth serum. I gotta read all those books eventually so i have a better understanding of the world and its lore as a whole. But yeah, never had a reason to hate Cho personally.
