  • COME FLY WITH ME as I take Central Washington University geology professor and star of "Nick on the Rocks" Nick Zentner on a helicopter tour of the eastern Malaga, Rock Island, and Lower Moses Coulee with a focus on geology. It was a beautiful day for this second flight together and we start off by laughing about the camera problems I had on our first flight. The nosecam footage is amazing and Nick points out many geological features along the way. This is part 3 of a multi-part series and the longest so far; I'm trying to keep them short and sweet.
    Places mentioned in this video:
    - Rock Island Dam: www.chelanpud.org/hydropower/...
    - Moses Couleee: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moses_C...
    - Grand Coulee: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_C...

    About Me and the Helicopter
    - I have been flying since 1998. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time (as of 2019) is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
    - My helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.com/r44-specific... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
    - My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightradar24.com/data/ai... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
    About Nick Zentner
    - Nick has an MS in Geology and has been teaching at Central Washington University since 1992.
    - In 2015, Nick received the prestigious James Shea Award, a national award recognizing exceptional delivery of Earth Science to the general public.
    - You can learn more about Nick on his website: www.nickzentner.com/
    - You can watch Nick on the Rocks episodes here: • Nick on the Rocks
    About the Video
    - The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro Hero 7 cameras (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl), one of which was connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm). Both cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound to about 25% of normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying.
    - The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: www.telestream.net/screenflow...
    - The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus.com/
    I try to drop cockpit POV videos every Sunday morning and "extras" with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members and patrons get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. Subscribe so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. The more subscribers I have, the more motivated I am to keep producing videos like this one.
    Any Amazon links on my channel are affiliate links (amzn.to/32PLHTD). If you click one of them and buy something, Amazon sends me a few pennies. Enough pennies make a dollar. Enough dollars buy new equipment. It doesn't cost you anything so I hope you'll shop with one of those links. Thanks.

    Anything with Ned Zinger is gold. Watching Mr Zinger nerd out while viewing the things he's studied from the air, is even better than watching him nerd out on the ground. This, is doing the video capture and geology thing the best way.

      @@FlyingMAir I was just making an inside joke, as the people who have recently been watching his new set of livestreams nicknamed him Ned Zinger in the chat and comments. Which he with good humor embraced.
      As you note in the comments from this specific video series, he made 75 livestream lectures from his house before the summer. Plus a bunch more since August, so I can see why that particular inside joke did not register. But...that is also why I think it is funny, as inside jokes are supposed to be esoteric. Though, you're in-on-it now, so it is no longer outside joke to you, which means we can all continue laughing about it.

    I never get bored with you drying cherry trees, it's where you are most aware and maneuver to avoid everything because any contact is not good!...with a 53' trailer my truck is about 73' long and it's my job to make it look easy turning tight corners surrounded by impatient traffic, touching anything (fire hydrants, pedestrians, signposts and such) is not good...I don't mind being watched while working, and you don't mind either apparently..I especially like your comments explaining the tight places and your comfort boundaries you don't want to give up...

    Another element of history, Moses Coulee had a branch of the Great Northern Railroad that continued up Douglas Creek and on to Mansfield. At 13:57 in the lower center of the frame was a tunnel. The railroad was built in 1909 and abandoned in 1985 and removed in 1987. In addition to the tunnel there were more than 40 bridges.

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  4 года назад

      Thanks for this! I was flying down lower Moses Coulee with a passenger just the other day and he mentioned the tunnels. The railroad track bed is clearly visible from the air. One of these days, I should do a low-level flight up Douglas Canyon.

    • @paulmack4090
      @paulmack4090 4 года назад

      @@FlyingMAir I agree. I wish you could fly through time as well and we could see the railroad in operation. Part of the reason it was abandoned was the railroads where switching from boxcars to covered hoppers for hauling wheat and the line needed extensive upgrades to handle the heavier cars. At the same time the move to trucks was continuing.

    Just a note on the Navy plane that crashed in the Columbia River, it was a EA6 Prowler. It did not strike the cliff, it actually crashed into the river while making a hard left turn. The wing man to the plane that was lost was in front, they made hard left bank and lost altitude. I was at the crash scene assisting with the recovery, one of the 2 crewmembers was still strapped in the ejection seat. We recovered his body along the North shoreline. The other pilot/navigator was found by divers days later. This was I believe in 1991 or 92, I know it was before 93 because of the car I was still driving. Interesting note , there was another incident with an EA6 that flew through the 3 main power lines at the bottom of the Palisades, cutting all three wires yet it still was able to fly back to Whidbey NAS with a large portion of the wing missing. The power lines fell striking a chevy pu and literally sliced the camper off like a knife going through soft butter.

      Thanks SO MUCH for this informative comment. I was only relating what I'd heard and I can't tell you how many people who've flown with me claimed the plane hit the cliff face. I thought it must be true. What I SHOULD have done was looked it up online.
      Those power lines at the end of the canyon are rather insidious, but in all honestly, those planes really shouldn't be flying that low in populated areas. Lucky pilot, though!

      @@FlyingMAir We actually had people that made the 911 call claim that the jet crashed into the rock face of the cliff. We thought this until we were on the water in a boat and found the debris and oil sheen. There was not impact with anything other than water. A lady who was in the orchard at the time was adamant. The Navy did an extensive investigation. Debris floating downstream was collected for some time after.

      You're right, it IS the wind noise and that'll be a factor anytime I take audio from the "nosecam." I often have both cameras inside the helicopter, sheltered from the wind, so the wind isn't an issue.
      I have an old Hero 3 that can be the third camera. The trick is to sync them all so the sound matches what's going on in the video. I'm working on it...

    • @vnigallahoir3523
      @vnigallahoir3523 4 года назад

      @@FlyingMAir It's really hard from my experience shooting on vehicles, because the external audio is totally separate, and in this case absolutely no way to sync even with claps and such.
      In cockpit audio could be synced pretty easy from the two cameras with the three claps trick. Line the three claps up in post, presto. I think if you did it close enough to the mic you could get it all synced easier.
      (I have no idea what you are doing for it now. But this is what I use for multi camera editing.)
