    Love ya Nick , I've been driving trucks across country and watching you in my sleeper for 5 years. You were my go to for off time entertainment. Seen everything you've put on here. Thanks for your dedication to educating people. I feel like a geologist myself, I'm always stopping and checking out road cuts. Thanks again!!!

    This stuff seems more like you Nick. I really like it. The older Nick on the rocks seemed a little constrained. Like you mention you like to wing it. Having watched both your 101 and 351 classes and multiple of your A-Z series I have a sense of how you like to form a narrative. You’re a storyteller, but you use your passion of geology to guide your stories. To add to this, already comfortable style of explaining stories that you have gained from your years of teaching, you have a wonderful collaborator who knows how visually help you tell your stories. On location. I love it. It’s great. You were bang on requesting a young buck to keep the crew small, and able to go to the locations you previously couldn’t get to.

    • @briane173
      @briane173 14 дней назад +3

      The videography is top-notch. Brady is compiling a resume of his own that's gonna take him places. Trying to tell some of these complex geologic stories in a six-minute segment is no easy task; but this latest iteration of _Nick on the Rocks_ has the right balance of _just_ enough visuals and _just_ enough narration to help condense these geologic stories into bite-sized chunks the general public can absorb, and might pique the interest of some in the audience enough to study these places and these processes themselves.

    • @PlayNowWorkLater
      @PlayNowWorkLater 14 дней назад +3

      @@briane173 can’t agree more, it is top notch. And Nick’s goal has always been to get more people interested in the geology of Washington, but because what happened in Washington over millions of years is so compelling and interesting to such a wide audience, he is achieving his goal to get more students enrolling in Geology, and getting people talking. It’s amazing when someone can bridge what’s happening in current science to the public. We need more people like Nick, and less people like Graham Hancock and Randall Carlson who research enough about a subject to tell a story that is interesting to the public, but is ultimately wrong. The more we educate the masses in an accessible format, the more we can educate the public, and steer them towards critical thinking, and THAT will ultimately lead to more people asking questions that can’t be answered without a deep dive. And in my opinion that leads more people to a university, or studying with people who know what they are talking about. Nick is a true gift to society, and helping steer the masses into the light of knowledge and understanding.

    I wish our PBS stations would produce something like your Nick on the Rocks. It would be cool to learn more about the coastal plain in nice 6-minute, easily understood segments! Thanks to you, Nick, I know a lot about WA geology. I look forward to learning more from you. I hope WA and PBS realize what a treasure they have in you. Thank you.

      The Berg is gorgeous. I've hiked a few beautiful trails there in my youth. Injasuthi area, and Sani Pass. Cathedral Peak and Royal Natal National Park. There was a roadside cutting near Underberg in the foothills where I remember finding a bunch of fossil fern leaves in crumbly clay like layers when I was about 12. The Geology of the Berg is interesting in itself I think being one of a massive "Deccan Traps" like volcanic event. I've been in Arizona now since 2000 and am enjoying the secenry and geology of the "Grand Canyon State".

I know those cuttings you refer to and have found similar leaf fossils as high up as Garden Castle. We now live up in the Kamberg, surrounded by Giants and Highmoor, I shall whisper your fond memories to our wonderful landscapes. Enjoy your wonderful canyons.

Nick was great with the information and the combination of Nick's presenter talents and Brady's visuals and editing make these 6 minutes little treasures.

    Because I watched some videos about volcanic activity on Iceland YT proposed a lecture about Siletzia. It was so interesting I posted it on Reddit, which got immediately the comment of Nick is one of the best, which made me watch more. I know now more about the geologic history of the North West than about Norway's history. But this is not the point. The most important fun is the display of an ongoing scientific discussion of a whole region. It's not just the lecture of a singular phenomenon,. Everything gets putted into the context of history. Thank you for this great work, which I put into the tradition with enlightenment and people like Alexander von Humboldt. Being a teacher is an art.

I have climbed and backpacked in the Sierras for over 30 years in those same boots. I have two pairs of dress shoes and a pair of cowboy boots they made for me. We just had a Wednesday edition of our "Jeepy Friday" adventures (day adjusted to accommodate our naturalist friend Ed). We drove up Moses Coolley, ventured in the Jeep up a four-wheel road and through a side canyon (Wagon Rd to Slack Creek) and explored the waterfall-filled little slot canyon, then emerged on the agricultural plateau and reconnected with the county road grid. We drove on up the upper coulee to Jameson Lake (coots and cormorants) and took another dirt road up onto the Waterville Plateau (fields of mustard and basalt haystacks), past the iconic mega-haystack, down into the town of Mansfield and on south to the sudden transition from haystacks everywhere to none (driving right off the moraine). Other than Slack Creek, almost all of this could have been done in a street vehicle in a moderate day from Seattle or Spokane. Nick's videos (including those with Randy Lewis) were resonating with and informing every mile of our adventure. And of course we stopped at Vinman's on our way!

    Tears! ♥. So happy for my hero Nick Zentner! But hey, I'm not gonna lie. I've been very enamored lately with what Myron Cook is doing. He is all about Erosion. Most of what Myron seems to be noting is not water moving over the land but water as an Ocean ~ for instance East of the Rocky Mountains, and then the "Deposition" (3 miles deep!) ~ with the water just sitting there. Erosion occurring under water, before (or during) all of this glacier stuff. The surface of the earth moving up and down. (over Time) Better than the "warp drive" on Star Trek. Myron and Nick should get together. ~ Not gonna lie. ~~~ Mr. Not Worthy from New Hampshire. ~~~. (~ an old guy with his coffee in the morning ~ that time issue again ~ oh well.)

    Does anyone know if a digital global model of tectonics/geological layers exists? Im looking for a global working model of geological history. They're building a new subdivision and the sewer lines cut thru the sandstone. There's distinctive layers or ash and rich carbon which I'm trying to figure out if its from a volcanic event or if it's from the "hog back" that formed the rockies. I'm at the Navajo volcanic field so I want to assume it's from a volcanic event but the obvious twisting and tearing of the landscape also suggests tectonic event or both. But I'm also sitting in a basin that was once a fairly large body of water.
