  • COME FLY WITH ME as I take Central Washington University geology professor and star of "Nick on the Rocks" Nick Zentner on a helicopter tour of the Columbia River Valley downriver from Wenatchee, WA. This is the third part of our second flight together and we start not far from the mouth of Potholes Coulee and Quincy Lakes and head south almost as far as Vantage. The nosecam footage is amazing and Nick points out many geological features along the way. This is part 5 of a multi-part series.
    Note: In Parts, 3, 4, 5 and beyond of this video, you'll hear Nick and I talking about unreliable video cameras. That's because of the camera failure I had on my first flight with Nick, which you can see for yourself in Part 2.
    Places mentioned in this video:
    - Babcock Bench washington.hom...
    - Potholes Coulee
    - The Gorge Amphitheater
    - Cave B Inn and Winery
    - Frenchman's Coulee
    - Petrified Forest
    About Me and the Helicopter
    - I have been flying since 1998. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time (as of 2019) is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
    - My helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.c... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
    - My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightrada... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
    About Nick Zentner
    - Nick has an MS in Geology and has been teaching at Central Washington University since 1992.
    - In 2015, Nick received the prestigious James Shea Award, a national award recognizing exceptional delivery of Earth Science to the general public.
    - You can learn more about Nick on his website: www.nickzentner...
    - You can watch Nick on the Rocks episodes here: • Nick on the Rocks
    About the Video
    - The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro Hero 7 cameras (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl), one of which was connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm). Both cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound to about 25% of normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying.
    - The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: www.telestream...
    - The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus....
    I try to drop cockpit POV videos every Sunday morning and "extras" with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members and patrons get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. Subscribe so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. The enthusiasm that Prof. Nick has for Washington geology is on display and infectious (not that kind). I was born and raised in Sunnyslope, so if it is in the cards for 2020, please head back up the Columbia and Wenatchee River Valleys. (Our orchards were at the mouth of Warm Springs Canyon.) Nobody can get the many wonders of Eastern Washington geology across like Nick in a Copter with your expert piloting.

    The diagonal look, to me, would be/could be caused as the result of the columns not really being connected, so as they are exposed to time, and weather, they come apart where-ever they are the weakest/receive the most exposure to the elements ! This would be the only way they could 'fall', as that's where their divisions are. In contrast, those areas where material is just piled, as it was laid down, falls downward in a mass, such as in a mudslide, etc.

    If I had to make a guess on pinch and swell in those rocks it would be gravitational. I don't know how fast a lava flows are but I guess it's the molten tide effect from the Moon as the lava flow travels I could be completely wrong...

    It's possible that the unusual variations in the columns are a result of being modulated by long sustained seismic vibrations during the cooling process.

    Great video, Maria! Makes me miss living in East Wenatchee and exploring by ground. I'm a geocacher and I've hiked the majority of the areas you've over-flown. In reference to your southwesterly flyby of Potholes Coulie into Ancient Lakes: there are 2 natural bridges at N47 09.017 W119 58.889. Two of them in one spot. Huge arches about 20 to 30 feet high. I'm sure you can see them from the air. Tons of geocaches down there.

    When I see the crinkle cuts, I keep thinking that maybe heat expands the column upward and cooling drops the cut down, and each time the "down" event happens, the column shrinks a bit and creates the lines.

    At 9:37, your 'columns', are they the same as those in the 'Giant's Causeway' ( in another part of the world ) as that's what they appear to be, to me !

    • @BlGGESTBROTHER
      @BlGGESTBROTHER 4 года назад

      The basalt columns at Giants Causeway are of the hexagonal variety that have already been scientifically explained. The columns visible at the timestamp you linked are different in that they have the wavy "crinkle cut fry" look to them that is very unique and currently *unexplained* by science.

    Rosa Flow, is that the weird one, I think the flow was cooling then the ground hopped or slapped from below maybe during tremors or in a single caldera burp that left a giant hammer effect like wave of energy in curves and way it breaks apart.

    Great view of those basalt columns, the Giant's Causeway in N. Ireland is not unique! Hard to see those wires - you look for the towers, I suppose?

    • @FlyingMAir
      @FlyingMAir  4 года назад

      I'm always looking for wires when I fly below 500 feet. Towers are the best indicator but not always easy to spot. (We're trained to fly over towers because wires can't be above towers.) I happen to know this area very well so I've got all the wires mentally catalogued.

    • @oscarmedina1303

      Actually, I'd be banking at 90° if the horizon was top to bottom, cutting the image into two squares (rectangles). I could be about 45° at 9:18. It's a shame my instruments aren't in that shot; I have an instrument that would tell us exactly what the bank angle is.
