  • COME FLY WITH ME as I finish up my hour+ flight with Central Washington University geology professor and star of "Nick on the Rocks" (and "Nick at Home") Nick Zentner on a helicopter tour of the Columbia River Valley downriver from Wenatchee, WA. This is the seventh part of our second flight together and we start just downriver from Wanapum Dam and head upriver, making our way back to Wenatchee. Along the way, we make a detour up Rock Island Creek and over Badger Mountain before landing at the airport. The nosecam footage is stunning and Nick points out many geological features along the way. This is the last (and longest) part of a multi-part series.
Note: In parts of this video, you'll hear Nick and I talking about unreliable video cameras. That's because of the camera failure I had on my first flight with Nick, which you can see for yourself in Part 2.
    Places mentioned in this video:
    - Wanapum Dam and Lake
    - Sunrise Highway
    - Frenchman's Coulee
    - Gorge Amphitheater
    - Mouth of Lower Moses Coulee
    - Rock Island Dam
    - Rock Island Creek
    - Badger Mountain
    - Pangborn Bar

    About Me and the Helicopter
    - I have been flying for about 20 years. My 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
    - The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.c... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
    - My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightrada... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
    About Nick Zentner
    - Nick has an MS in Geology and has been teaching at Central Washington University since 1992.
    - In 2015, Nick received the prestigious James Shea Award, a national award recognizing exceptional delivery of Earth Science to the general public.
    - You can learn more about Nick on his website: www.nickzentner...
    - You can watch Nick on the Rocks episodes here: • Nick on the Rocks
    About the Video
    - The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro Hero 7 cameras (amzn.to/2Lxyzwl), one of which was connected to the helicopter's intercom system with an NFlightCam audio cable (amzn.to/31syLTm). Both cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound to about 25% of normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying.
    - The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: www.telestream...
    - The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus....
I try to drop cockpit POV videos every Sunday morning and "extras" with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members and patrons get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. Subscribe so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. The more subscribers, channel members, and Patreon patrons I have, the more motivated I am to keep producing videos like this one.
Any Amazon links on my channel are affiliate links (amzn.to/32PLHTD). If you click one of them and buy something, Amazon sends me a few pennies. Enough pennies make a dollar. Enough dollars buy new equipment. It doesn't cost you anything so I hope you'll shop with one of those links. Thanks.

Nick is a national treasure, and a great embassador for Washington state. I live in Ontario Canada and plan on coming out to see some of this great geology I have learned from Nicks youtube channel. Thanks for bringing us along on this flight.

I so enjoy your flights with Nick. You’re two of my favorite folks to watch. I’m a geologist (BSc WSU ‘78, MSc UIUC ‘85) who teaches high school math and science these days so had been following Nick’s lectures for some time. Then I found your videos. You two together are a real treat. Keep doing them. Coincidently, my wife is from Waterville and her family farm was on the northwest flank of Badger Mountain, about 5 miles south of Waterville. Terri’s Mom lives in town now and we were there just last week. When I got home I found this video! It was such a treat to see the top of Badger Mountain-also the Rock Island grade, which we have driven a couple times since our wedding in 1980.

Just so Maria knows, it was extremely easy to watch all seven videos in this series in one sitting! There's no such thing as a flight that lasts too long. And there's no such thing as too much information about geology of the PNW. Both of you were informative and enjoyable to watch and listen to. Your flights were a dream come true. I grew up in Cashmere and worked for Cascade Helicopters. But I never got the chance to fly with geology in mind or just to see the area in general. You've flown over so many of those places that I've always wanted to see and you've answered so many of the questions I've had for years and years about how these odd formations have come to be. Many heart felt thanks for the hours and dollars you've spent making my evening so wonderful.

    These are Fantastic! Thank You!
Please coordinate with Nick to do more, maybe ask him what might be fascinating to see from these vantage points and being able to articulate around to see things from different angles.
He is a Sucker for perfect lighting, and I bet the gravel bars out by your place would be one of the big ones on his list to show it at just the right moment to reveal the patterning and contours at just the right positions to show its immense scale and likeness to ripples in sand.

I'd love to do more with Nick, but I'm not budgeted for it. The helicopter costs hundreds of dollars per hour to fly. At this point, I'm only making videos on revenue flights. Sorry!

Ugh -- if only it weren't so damned expensive to operate, I'd push for you and Nick to go to LOTS of places near and _in_ the Cascades that only the most seasoned climber could reach, just to tell more stories from a different vantage point of how and when this landscape came to be. You both are doing a great service and I hope _your_ fans get a bunch out of these geology excursions, and maybe Nick can run these vids in his Geo 101 classes and add it to his pedagogical resumé.
