“Yet in his eyes, all the sadness of the world, Those pleading eyes that both threaten and adore.” What beautiful lyrics. I feel like it encapsulates the character of the Phantom/Erik so wonderfully. And it also shows that Christine recognizes the sorrows and pain that the Phantom has endured. It’s heartbreaking.
To people who are upset with Raoul: WHEN RAOUL REJECTS THE IDEA OF THE PHANTOM, HE IS REJECTING THAT THE PHANTOM IS A PHANTOM. To elaborate, he is asserting that the Phantom is a _man_ because Christine is freaking the fuck out. He is reminding Christine that ghosts do not exist due to the fact Christine is describing the Phantom like he's some sort of all-powerful God to be feared when he is, in fact, not. In this scene, Raoul is the one that's right. The Phantom is human with vulnerabilities like you and me and should not be treated like a supernatural force.
Thank you! I don't really hate Raoul, but he's terribly flawed to the point where he's not too likeable. But some people don't really understand the things he does for Christine. And yeah, I believe Raoul is rejecting the idea of a phantom or a ghost that exists. Raoul is not perfect, nor a prince on a white horse, but he is courageous, sweet, and genuine, and he genuinely adores and loves Christine so much to the point he is literally willing to risk his life for her. The Phantom is so fatally obsessed with Christine to the point the burning down of Paris Opera Theatre happened near the end. Christine was under the Phantom's tutelage FOR A DECADE ( SINCE SHE WAS 8, HELLO ) and had always been afraid and in awe of him. But the moment she realized that the Phantom is not her Angel of Music, she descends into a sea of paranoia, devastation, and confusion. She met Raoul, a childhood friend of hers, as an adult, and they evolved from friends to true love. Raoul deserves Christine in every way and Christine has every single right to love him back. The Phantom is an evil madman, psychotic killer, and hebephile. Raoul is a flawed yet genuine hero who is trying to do the right thing. Raoul and Christine belong together.
I agree with you that he's a man, but I get irritated because in my mind he's rejecting that there wasn't anybody there at all. Man or not. She didn't dream him up, but he was just a man.

Looking at Christine's lyrics, in a way the phantom could be a metaphor for severe depressive thoughts - as much as she would like to escape from the Phantom/ depression, her mind will never be quite released and free. No matter how imprisoned and fatalistic such thoughts make her feel, there is a certain allure and familiarity in them that keeps her going back to that place. The place where she learnt to find solace in the thing that really makes her soar (music) and get though the solitude that life threw at her. This type of toxic relationship with depression is the essence of the song Lithium by Evanescence, where Amy Lee states that she is in love with her sorrow, and as much as she wants to let go, she also does not want to forget how it feels without medication. The fact that Raoul dismisses the presence of the Phantom is similar to how sometimes even our most loved ones fail to see our internal tortures and suffering.
@@Himaryous I wrote this during a very bad time in my life when I was going through a bout of severe depression; hence my interpretation. It also went from up to down when she was being taken to the Phantom's lair at the beginning. I think Schumacher said it was intentionally done to be symbolic.

As much as I love Sierra Boggess, I am more of a fan of Emmy Rossum. Even though Sierra is my favorite Christine I also watch Emmy in shameless and her Fiona tops everyone's Christines. Or her Bec in You're Not You. Emmy is a better actress than Sierra. By a lot.
This is like comparing apples to oranges. Sierra is a stage actress. Emmy is a screen actress. Stage and screen acting are two very different ballparks and not everyone can do both. Besides, Emmy can sing, there's no doubt about that, but Sierra is objectively the more skilled of the two and has a more operatic voice- suitable for a show about an opera.
The part where he is hiding behind the statue gets to me. I feel terrible, he really loves Christine but his life, personality, and way of living made it impossible. To love someone you can't have is really painful. But yet he is hiding there wondering and waiting if somehow even a 0.1% he can win
He overhears her on two occasion saying she is afraid and that doesn't cause him to stop stalking her. At this point in his psychological development, he only cares about himself. That's not love, that's obsession.
The phantom has such a sad story, being mistreated like that as a child, murder is never okay but I don't feel sorry for that man who tortured him as an innocent kid. Then he lived all his life in the shadows, no one to really raise him but kinda being feared by people, being a mystery, feeding his ego, having a stage in the shadows. I don't excuse the murders but I can see why he became the way he did. Creepy that he stalked Christine as a kid, he did show he could be gentle with Christine in the beginning, it's his emotions that get the better of him. He realised that and let her go, his story is truly tragic. I wonder what he did with the rest of his life, he does know how to hide in shadows, I imagine he did that. Even tough I find Raoul somewhat annoying sometimes, he is a really good and healthier guy for her. She alone can't heal all Eriks pain, he would need years of therapy.
I like this song. I like those stairs they go up to the roof. Where ever I go, I see those stairs and I always say " I like those stairs" and people always ask why? And my mum always says " Because they are from Phantom of the opera 2004"
It's interesting how so many people are saying Raoul is saying the phantom is not real, and that is how I understood it as a child, but now it makes sense. He is saying it is a man and not some ghost (which is true).
From the book; she is paranoid of Eric's ability to spy on her, her only safe place to talk to Raoul is to bring him to the roof top. There she tells her tale of how she met the Opera Ghost and the suffering of his terror.
Realy this is my second fav movie so beautyfull!!! This is the best movie off al the Phantom of the opra's plus i kinda feel sad for the Phantom mistreatid s a kid and now everyone hates him
Awwww that’s great you played Raoul!! Which production did you play him in?! The Phantom of the Opera is my all time favorite musical and Christine is one of my biggest Broadway/Musical Theatre dream roles!! 💙🥰
It's only at the start of this song (in the film at least) that he is like this. He says there is no phantom because he only knows it as a fable. To him what had happened was someone being funny (in an unfunny way), but it was no phantom, just a person. After she explains that she has met him, he doesn't belittle her. Instead he says that he will protect her from whatever the thing is that she is afraid of. He doesn't hate the phantom (yet) he just doesn't like how he has hurt his girlfriend
The phantom knows her power and capability and wants her to meet her potential. Raoul wants to protect her and lead her and guide her and keep her as his own. Phantom believes she can be the best, Raoul wants her as a housewife
Everyone knew she could sing she was just younger and seniority rules. Phantom pushed her but he also manipulated her from childhood and wanted to molest her but he couldn’t caused his penis don’t work right😂and killed people... don’t be ridiculous
bawoman you obviously know anything about phantom of the opera if you have to ask that. It’s not a speculation or theory it’s quite literally what was happening. Or at least what he wanted to happen. Please use google and educate yourself.
The Phantom wanted to use Christine to boost his own ego. He never actually loved Christine for her. He was in love with the idea of her and the idea of love. Raoul actually knows Christine. He's not saying that the Phantom doesn't exist at all. Whilst Christine sees the Phantom as some sort of deity, Raoul sees him for what he really is: a man who who is a manipulative murderer, perving on the barely adult Christine. Raoul supports Christine's career. He just wants to protect her from being consumed with darkness and to save her from the Phantom's manipulation. It's so hilarious how people hate on Raoul so much, but worship a murderer just because he's attractive (even though he's not supposed to be).
@@imjustlucy_29 In the book Raul is more relatable, we can understand him more because we have his point of view. In the movie sadly, they left it, that's why he is hated.
Me and my friend actually fight on who is better Phantom or Raoul I say Phantom is better dispite all his.......mistakes and she says Raoul is If your on team phantom reply Music of the Night If team Raout reply All I ask of You Edit: After 2 years I realized that i meant that I like Phantom better as a charater but would much rather have Christine and Rauol together
I don’t have an answer, just an elaboration. In a true story, Raoul would be a healthy person to be with. Everything he does that affects her is done to protect her, not for himself. Also in a true story, the Phantom would be disgusting. He’s a stalker and a murderer. That said, because it’s fiction, it’s much easier to justify those things, and the Phantom is much more interesting. There would be practically no story without him, and likewise without her relationship with him. Edit: spelling

It also went from up to down when she was being taken to the Phantom's lair at the beginning. I think Schumacher said it was intentionally done to be symbolic.
I love this scene - it's so intense and emotional and the harmony is perfect. And of course, RAOUL. #teamraoul
Raoul is surely the worst thing of this song. I've seen a cover with Christine and Erik, it was so emotional, beautiful and romatic, they fixed it! #teamERIK❤️❤️
1:40 my favorite part of this whole movie track
She just fall in love with his voice and memory of that night.
Omg this movie is my favourite!!!!!!!!
Raoul: There is no Phantom Of The Opera.
A few moments later...
Raoul: The Phantom Of The Opera is there inside your mind.
Man you said he wasn't there!
Meaning he thinks she’s making the phantom up in her head. A figment of her imagination.
@@Marlaina i mean i know that. although i 11 my mum made me watch it and it was a sudden addiction. me and my mum cry a lot at the end and my dad just runs cause he asks why its not sad
who would dislike this.....?
1 person, by accident.
+My Idea Garden Lol
Raoul and Madame Giry. Madame Giry clearly ships Erik and Christine more.
Phantom, perhaps? He heard them singing to his music... ;)
Everything about her is just so perfect and beautiful😍😍
phantom of the opera is the best movie in the world
As much as I love Sierra Boggess, I am more of a fan of Emmy Rossum. Even though Sierra is my favorite Christine I also watch Emmy in shameless and her Fiona tops everyone's Christines. Or her Bec in You're Not You. Emmy is a better actress than Sierra. By a lot.
2:05 - Da girl got pipes. Seriously, its hard to remember she was barely 18 when she did this. Pretty impressive.
corbfisher well
she mentioned she had singing classes and had already sung POTO before so
Sierra is a stage actress, and Emmy is a film actress, so we really can't compare their acting lest they be acting in the same field.
Best musical ever!!
She is soo talented!!!
0:50 - 2:56 is my favorite part, it just sounds amazing aaaa
Please someone tell me why this wasn't included on the soundtrack...
Emi Figoras Oh, I have amazon prime and it's on the soundtrack on there (deluxe edition)
I have the deluxe edition and this is on it.
Emi Figoras it was
Watch the movie people
From the book; she is paranoid of Eric's ability to spy on her, her only safe place to talk to Raoul is to bring him to the roof top. There she tells her tale of how she met the Opera Ghost and the suffering of his terror.
Realy this is my second fav movie so beautyfull!!! This is the best movie off al the Phantom of the opra's plus i kinda feel sad for the Phantom mistreatid s a kid and now everyone hates him
When she said “Yet in his eyes.. all the sadness of the world” that is so sad
i love emmy rossum
When phantom cry’s I cry
phantom/Erik: **yandere**
Christine: **senpai**
Wooowww he overheard her talking about how horrible she thinks his face is oof that must hurt
why have you brought me here
me: cause i felt like it
Imagine how the whole movie would sound if they said all the words in each song but didn't sing. Lmao
I ❤️'d performing this scene when I played Raoul. Although, the overlapping bits between Christine/Raoul are tricky to get EXACTLY right.
Awwww that’s great you played Raoul!! Which production did you play him in?! The Phantom of the Opera is my all time favorite musical and Christine is one of my biggest Broadway/Musical Theatre dream roles!! 💙🥰
This section is so underrated
I hate it how Raoul despises the Phantom as nothing more than a fantasy and won’t believe what Christine says UUGHH
Yeah Raoul can be kind of condescending. He's even worse in the book. He''s not as bad as the Phantom though.
@@monmothma3358 He's not as good as him either
I can hit all of Christine's high notes
Yesssss
"But his voice filled my spirit with a strange, sweet sound" . I cannot explain the feeling hearing that part
2:04 Wow
The phantom knows her power and capability and wants her to meet her potential. Raoul wants to protect her and lead her and guide her and keep her as his own. Phantom believes she can be the best, Raoul wants her as a housewife
Everyone knew she could sing she was just younger and seniority rules. Phantom pushed her but he also manipulated her from childhood and wanted to molest her but he couldn’t caused his penis don’t work right😂and killed people... don’t be ridiculous
Raoul didn't threat her, didn't manipulate her, didn't kill anyone for her. Don't be ridiculous.
@@TheNamezZ Hwhere in hell did you get his penis didnt work lol. Or that he wanted to molest her? lol...thats a bit of a reach
bawoman you obviously know anything about phantom of the opera if you have to ask that.
Kind of ironic how she’s frantically pulling him to the roof so the phantom can’t find them...
Aubrey Lol yeah
❤❤❤
Christin has good voice
요거 보다 더 오래된 오페라의 유령을 봤을때 안 울었는데...왜....2004년꺼인 오페라의 유령은....눈물을 흘리정도록 슬픈거지...
2:04 😱
She loved the phantom until he killed a guy, then her love turned to fear.
Lindo 👏👏👏👏👏
Christine: a face so distorted, diformd, it was hardly a face.
Phantom: doesn't have an eyebrow
That's literally it
1:46 to 2:09 is great my favorite
And Raoul is nice
2:26
Is it just me or were there an unrealistic amount of stairs?
Isabel Henning not just you
Emmy sounds like a Disney princess!
You can see Raoul so jealous. Lol
2:00
She was sixteen during the making of this film! Sixteen! She deserves much more credit!
Best movie ever she had 2 boyfriends at the same time
That is how she told raoul that she did have a another boyfriend
What melody/song is 2:26 from?
same melody from end part of "stranger than you dreamt it"
2:40 of this version ruclips.net/video/hgEVVCBu6EU/видео.html
Caitlyn Winchester thank you!!
에릭(팬텀)의 얼굴만 봐도 맘 아프다.....
Raoul is literally the best, I love him and the Phantom can screw off 🤷🏻♀️
You read the book, didn't you?
I strongly disagree
@@mirkohoble tell me please i'm curious
@@imjustlucy_29 In the book Raul is more relatable, we can understand him more because we have his point of view.
In the movie sadly, they left it, that's why he is hated.
@@mirkohoble Can I have more detail on how Raoul is in the book😁
Raul, I've seen him,😳I think she feels him too in that cave
what melody is 0:56 from??
Me and my friend actually fight on who is better Phantom or Raoul
I say Phantom is better dispite all his.......mistakes
and she says Raoul is
If your on team phantom reply Music of the Night If team Raout reply All I ask of You
Edit: After 2 years I realized that i meant that I like Phantom better as a charater but would much rather have Christine and Rauol together
Music of the Night
Raoul
I don’t have an answer, just an elaboration. In a true story, Raoul would be a healthy person to be with. Everything he does that affects her is done to protect her, not for himself. Also in a true story, the Phantom would be disgusting. He’s a stalker and a murderer. That said, because it’s fiction, it’s much easier to justify those things, and the Phantom is much more interesting. There would be practically no story without him, and likewise without her relationship with him.
Edit: spelling
Music of the night.
To all those replying Team Phantom,
I hope you come to realize how toxic of a person he is, that’s All I Ask Of You.
이건 진짜.. 스토리 자체가 슬프다....
Why are Christine and Raoul running up to the roof?
i mean if ur stalker lives in the sewers why not go up
