Twisted ever way, what answer can I give, Am I to risk my life to win the chance to live? Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice? Do we become his prey? Do I have any choice? He kills without a thought, he murders all that's good, I know I can't refuse, and yet I wish I could, Oh God if I agree, what horrors wait for me, in this, The Phantom's Opera?
I think the core of the phantom's story is that he has gone his whole life without love. Even his own mother could not bear to look at him, his first article of clothing, a mask... Growing up in a freakshow, beaten and jeered at, regarded as a murderer for finally gaining his freedom, being taken to live out the rest of his days in the secret passages of the opera house... Then finally when he falls in love with Christine, having her reject him for Raul? Is it any wonder he finally snapped?
It's always bothered me that Raoul uses Christine as bait. I get that he wants to capture the Phantom, but it endangers her. Plus, she begs him not to do this to her, but he still makes her. In the end, it's his fault that he gets her. It's one reason why I'm not a big Raoul fan...
He's certainly sympathetic, but he's still the villain. He chooses to do all of the wicked things he does. It is almost definite that he had a terrible upbringing (and poetic justice recognizes this by letting him get away in the end), but be careful of the reasoning that bases a person's actions solely on his circumstances; with that reasoning, no act at all can be considered evil, for all that would be necessary are the right circumstances to make it excusable.
(continued response) Erick (the phantom) accomplished much and was an adult when he started living in the opera house. But more importantly, the story should be seen from not only from his point of view but also from Raoul's and Christine's as well as the novel in detail talks about Raoul's feelings and thoughts as well as Christine's. Erik is to be pitied but what he has done cannot be justified for no matter how you say it, it was wrong.
remember that the phantom is the same age as Madame Giry (Meg's Mother) so it is very creepy how the phantom has an obsession with someone much younger than him. Also, Raoul and Christine were childhood sweethearts and are actually in love.
Unrequited Love: Its the feeling of being completely, hopelessly, desperately in love with someone, all the while knowing that your feelings will never reach them. Hence, the Phantom's LOVE for Christine.
Ok but i still dont get what their plan was. Was it to lure the Phantom by having Christine perform in Don Juan and then arrest him on stage?? If that was the plan then why when he appeared on stage they let him finish the song. I just dont get it...
Not to disagree with you but you should read the novel when you get a chance if you haven't yet because Madam Giry isn't the one who brings him to the opera house. The movie musical is based on (as in not the same as) the musical The Phantom Of The Opera which is based on (as in also not the same as) the novel written by Gaston Leroux.
That is an amazingly good point! I've always maintained that Erik was a victim, not evil. But that point about his understanding of people coming from Opera- I mean, no wonder he acted the way he did. All he's seen of others is negativity and abuse, and then opera. Whilst opera is awesome, the storylines can be a little bizarre. :) I'm going to use that point next time someone tells me he's evil! :D Thanks! :)
My opinion, curious of your thoughts: The Phantom isn’t the villain, but a victim throughout. He was abused horribly as a child for the way he was born, and then forced to live the rest of his life in the sewers after being “rescued” by Giry. Not only that, but he had no contact with other people, so his only understanding of them came from opera. What a great example to go by! Is it his fault that his understanding of love is twisted?
It's not really like we ignore that fact, we can just understand why the Phantom did all that. If you think about from the Phantom's perspective, would you really want the person you love so much to be with someone else. To leave you to go with someone else just because you are deformed. If I were the Phantom, I'd probaly go mad with jealousy like he did. We can really sympathise with the Phantom, despite all that he has done.
The reason that there's very little emotion is that the producers clearly cared more about the song sounding perfect, and besides, the songs themselves convey a lot of emotion, so it's not that terrible...
I think if the phantom was in Raoul's place, he would have dragged her off to a completely different country to another opera house so the creepy stalker couldn't get her. Don't care if he's caught or not. Oh, you have to give up the only family you've known since? Sorry, you're mine. But you'll be safe, and you still get to sing
guys, theyr lipsinking. all of this is prerecorded cause they cant sing and run around. thats why theres no emotion. this is my fav movie evr, trust me.
go away raoul bacicly ur using christine as a trap to cacth ur pray , thats not very loving .id choose the phantom at least he cared about her and he is good looking and can sing he done a lot for christine then raoul rewind it ,hes only happyness gone
Honestly, I hate the movie. There's absolutely no emotion! The singing is mediocre and I feel nothing while the Broadway show throws me into a depression for days even though I've seen it countless times. Ugh... it's just... frustrating.
i hate to say this, but an explaination is no excuse... as a psych major I c alot of victims who end up being the abuser in multiple ways; John Wayne Gacy was sexually abused- but that doesn't excuse what he did. The Phantom was abused and scorned by society; it's sad and wrong- but the fact is what he did was still wrong. And in a logical perspective: had Christine chose the Phantom would she have been able to live a normal life? Nope :-/
Makin a secret plan to fool the phantom? Better sing it out loud so he can hear it.
its funny, how this speaks to everyone differently.. for me, when she says "he wont let me go" my heart just drops!!
the way she says "He wont let me go" gives me chills every time!
I love that Love Never Dies brings back Twisted Every Way; very pretty scene
I seriously have lost count of how many times I've seen this movie...last year I watched it every day for one or two weeks..
This small scene is one of my favorites out of the whole movie. I don't know what it is about it... I just love it!
"But every hope and every prayer rest on you now. No pressure or anything..." Haha. But seriously my god I love this song! ♥
Twisted ever way, what answer can I give,

The Phantom's Opera?

Arguably one of the most-passionate scenes from a movie I have ever witnessed
Finally I found my favourite song in the all movie. In my opinion 2:32 at 3:19 is a magical moment where we can see all emotion of Christine.
It's always bothered me that Raoul uses Christine as bait. I get that he wants to capture the Phantom, but it endangers her. Plus, she begs him not to do this to her, but he still makes her. In the end, it's his fault that he gets her. It's one reason why I'm not a big Raoul fan...
Why would you plan against the Phantom in his own Opera House?
He's certainly sympathetic, but he's still the villain. He chooses to do all of the wicked things he does. It is almost definite that he had a terrible upbringing (and poetic justice recognizes this by letting him get away in the end), but be careful of the reasoning that bases a person's actions solely on his circumstances; with that reasoning, no act at all can be considered evil, for all that would be necessary are the right circumstances to make it excusable.
".... and yet I wish I could..." That is true fear being portrayed there.
This is by far my favorite song! All of them are amazing but the emotion of this one it's amazzzzzing!
Still rooting for you Phantom!
Ya so lets all just plan against the Phantom and sing reeeaaalllyy loudly so he wont here us shall we?
... You are a genius. May I give you a hug? Please?
"Christine, Christine, don't think that I don't care, but I don't. Go get 'em! :D" Sorry, I just had to XD
2:33 is genius!
One of my favorite lines in the Movie, it's very chilling.

In the musical he is totally a tragic hero. In te original novel though, you're supposed to be creeped out by him lol
"What I once used to dream....I now dread."
remember that the phantom is the same age as Madame Giry (Meg's Mother) so it is very creepy how the phantom has an obsession with someone much younger than him. Also, Raoul and Christine were childhood sweethearts and are actually in love.

so many people watch this movie and confuse pity for the phantom as sympathy
"dont worry, you'll be fine but right now while he lives he will haunt us till were dead"
:D

Pose at 0:23 to see Albus Dumbledore.

I know I love that dress so much

What I never understood is why she can't just leave and go to a different opera... that way nobody dies :/
you think they'd know by now that you shouldn't make plans against the phantom, while in the opera house!
from 2:33 til 3:19 I love the sound
She grew up there, it's all she knows.
i hate how she sang don't make me do this yet she's basically forcing her by making her feel guilty
It's most certainly not his fault, but that doesn't make it right.
why does it sound like their singing higher on this than on the dvd?
i think that sierra had more emotion but gerard makes up for it in this
No, it's genius and art over beauty and youth. Both Raoul and Erik have money.
i first saw when i was in 6th grade it scared me @ 1st but now i
AMEN
True story bro. XD
2:50-3:17 ~~~~ CHILLS
The soliders even do the haep thing! lol XD
I totally agree. That was a cowardly act on Raoul's part.
I feel like Christine, in school! Scared and no one understands.
The reason that there's very little emotion is that the producers clearly cared more about the song sounding perfect, and besides, the songs themselves convey a lot of emotion, so it's not that terrible...
I kinda prefer it in the musical when she sings like all of this.
Pity me! I try so hard to enjoy the movie, because I know it's good -- but I've been so, so spoiled by the musical!
I think if the phantom was in Raoul's place, he would have dragged her off to a completely different country to another opera house so the creepy stalker couldn't get her. Don't care if he's caught or not. Oh, you have to give up the only family you've known since? Sorry, you're mine. But you'll be safe, and you still get to sing
who would put them self as Christine and who you choose ? raoul or the phanotm?
um its not "Notes" its "We have all been blind"
I think that HERE is the only place that you can tell that she was only 16 when she did this.
Yeah but she also dosent want to betray her Angel which is the phantom so yeah she and the phantom ARE made for each other 3
Poor Christine. She's being forced into something she doesn't want...yup Erik and Christine were definately made for each other... _-_
I hate Raoul. Christine should have gone with the phantom. Makes me cry that she like Raoul instead!
if the phantom was in the place of raoul, he wouldn't of made christine do it. (why I hat raoul)
At one point, she looks exactly like Anne Hathaway. *Just saying
And the original? xD
true i guess they had to rely on the whole swordsmanship thing to determine the gender
guys, theyr lipsinking. all of this is prerecorded cause they cant sing and run around. thats why theres no emotion. this is my fav movie evr, trust me.
its very hard to tell if raoul is a girl or boy with his hair.
Raoul is so whiney... TEAM PHANTOM
go away raoul bacicly ur using christine as a trap to cacth ur pray , thats not very loving .id choose the phantom at least he cared about her and he is good looking and can sing he done a lot for christine then raoul rewind it ,hes only happyness gone
She puts no emotion into her singing. No one in the cast does. The 25th Anniversary cast is a million times better.
Honestly, I hate the movie. There's absolutely no emotion! The singing is mediocre and I feel nothing while the Broadway show throws me into a depression for days even though I've seen it countless times. Ugh... it's just... frustrating.
