Hi Peter, I have missed 2 tips 😉, - Don't use your UV filter in front of the lens, because of bracking light on the filter it could give you green flares in your picture. - For Olympus users, don't use silent mode (electronic shutter), you could get anoying colour abbreviation in your picture. Robin Wong has explained this in one of his videos.
Hi Peter! I juts bought a tripod and wanted to try next week. Now I even have an assignment to create. Thanks for the extra motivation! Will send some pics!!! :)
great tips Peter, thanks ! Olys Live Composition is truly helpful, can achieve really cool effects. Auto HDR may be no as good as in smartphones but is also useful.
Thanks so much for the tips Peter! It's always a refreshing for me as a hobby photographer even though night photography is my favourite, especially at the blue hour time.
I recently tested HDR2 which offers both a jpeg and a raw against the new Capture One HDR merging tool and found HDR2 to be more pleasing and less noisy than the merged raw images. Unfortunately (but reasonable) the output of C1 HDR is a dng file - which is fine for further processing - but in DxO the prime and deep prime denoising functions are provided only for raw images. I often use live time mode for static motifs and observing the exposure results on the screen I stop exposure when the result seems to be pleasing - although I know that the screen (and EVF) produces only "primitiv" preview jpegs and in darkness exposure is even more difficult to evaluate from those sources. And thanks for reminding me to switch off IBIS (and IOS) when shooting on a tripod, I often forget that to do! To set a reminding message would ne helpful ...:-)
It depends a bit on what I am photographing. A wide-angle is very good for the cityscapes and a bit longer for details and people. Also, a fast lens is good, but not necessary.
@@ForsgardPeter, no, I don't have problems with alignment. When I used auto-alignment in Photoshop it took a lot of time, but few months ago I switched to kandao raw+ which is super fast.
Curious about the “turn of image stabilization” tip. Does that apply to back button focus? I’ve seen other videos that have tested this tip out & “IS on” doesn’t affect the photos. So I’m wondering if this tip is only truly relevant to shutter button focusing. Thoughts?
Not sure what you mean. If you make image that are going to be stacked turning off the IBIS will make sure that the images are perfectly aligned. If the IBIS is on the crop of each photo is abit different.
One important tip you of course know, but did not mention: Use exposure compensation, and underexpose but at least one or two stops. The lightmeter of the camera is set up to take daylight pictures, therefore it will "turn night into day". To get the right nighttime mood we need to correct this, plus it will prevent blown out highlights and give you shorter exposures times for your handheld shots.
About the noise in photos: It’s always good to remember, that if you don’t have ANY noise in image, it might also look really unnatural and plastic…ish. I don’t mind having noise in photos, but some photographers get rid of all the noise and it doesn’t always look good.
Hi Peter, hope all continues to be good with you and your family. One question, doing automatic expo stacking or HDR in Olympus are you recommending turning of Ibis? Or just when doing it manually? All the best 👍👍
Thanks. I hope that everything is also fine with you and your family. If you photograph hand held HDR it does not matter that much. I still usually turn it off.
@@ForsgardPeter, all is well with my family too, thank you. About the technical reply, thank you again. I am going to try it out, and analyse the results. All the best to you and your family 👍👍
Would it be better to set the white balance manually using a piece of paper or whatever? With cityscapes you are going to have a mixture of light types.
I think because there are so many different light sources, "correct" white balance is technically impossible. Therefore adjust white balance by taste and shoot RAW, so you can fine tune it afterwards. Most probably these light sources, which you see in the image will not be the same that illuminate the paper or grey card and in this case this will not fulfill the purpose.
Look into Laowa, TTArtisan and 7Artisan lenses. They have quite nicely priced lenses. Especially Laowa 10mm f2 is an good option. Laowa also has 7.5mm f2 lens.
a question for you sir, about photo submission for 28 Dec, the photo image should be natural (no edit color/light) or may edited (give color preset or etc)? I interest to participate this submission. thank you and good tips anyway.
Is there any option to use one of the hdr modes without activating the mechanical shutter? I use exposure bracketing quite often in critical light situations but don't see any point in using the mechanical shutter on subjects that are not moving very fast. With electronic shutter, 5 or 7 exposures are made in 1/2 second and no tripod is needed :-)

Well said. The best tip ... "Blue hour"

I have not really seen any color problems with silent mode. Yes I know that for some that might be a problem.
I like the information of which lens , camera and settings you use. Very helpful for someone who is old and new to this.
Great to hear.
I would definately try.
Thanks Peter how you and your family have a wonderful holiday God bless thanks for you’re time
Happy holidays to you too!
Very Good... 👌👍👍
Thanks Peter... 🙏🙏
Greetings... "SALUDOS... 👋🙋😃 "
Many thanks!
This is one of your best videos. Lots of real world, average person tips.
Glad you think so! Thank you.
Thanks for the videos, Peter. And have a very Merry Christmas!
Thanks, you too!

Thanks Peter! I would add: if you're Olympus camera user don't fear to use shutter speed down to 1 sec in handheld shooting.
Good point. Extra extra tip.
great tips Peter thank you ,have a great Christmas and a great new year ,stay safe and take care

In Indonesia, the blue hour become blue minutes 😂 just 1-2 minutes before the sunset or Magrib time in here.
Very helpful thank you.
You're welcome!

Don’t forget Handheld Starlight available in EM10’s, EM1 (not II or III) & EM5 II & III (not I)
Ps OMDS, can we have it back in our EM1 series?
That is a good feature. Do not really understand why they did not have it on newer models?
@@ForsgardPeter especially when it could be much more advanced because of the focus stacking and high res capabilities of the more recent cameras
Thanks for the tips! Be sure to put out cheap toilet paper prior to your relatives arrival … good chance they won’t extend their stay :)
:D
I use stacking of many (~20) underexposed images for night photography without tripod.
You have no problem with aligning the images?

Yes that underexposure will happen if you use flag colors and use ETTR.
How is the noise reduction in the camera, there are different levels in the camera, which should I use, i never use more then 800 iso.
I usually have noise filter off and noise reduction on Auto.

That is one way to set the white balance.
Isn't camera technology advanced enough to skip it? Secondly tools in post process are good enough to skip white cards too?
I think because there are so many different light sources, "correct" white balance is technically impossible. Therefore adjust white balance by taste and shoot RAW, so you can fine tune it afterwards.

Everything is ok. Edited or not. I hope you send an image.
Peter what metering mode do you recommend for night time of photography?
It does not rally matter if you use the flag colors method and histogram. Here is a video about that: ruclips.net/video/xZ9jXhbJlcs/видео.html

Unfortunately, no. Even if you have electronic shutter selected for your default setting, the camera will override that for HDR.
I will check into that and come back to you.
@@ericseale793 Ev bracketing is possible with electronic shutter.
The Tivoli black sky picture reminds me of James Bond.
It kinda does. The image is from Copenhagen from 2019.
