You mean to tell me that a man (regardless if he is in his 50s or not) that spent the majority of his adult life in an apocalyptic wasteland of a society, constantly vigilant for any signs of trouble, fighting off said trouble on a daily basis, could mop the floor with a 'roided out woman? That's no subversion, mate, that is what is expected. And requires no unnatural suspension of disbelief.
Lol maybe in an alternate reality where the world is a better place. The producers are probably creaming themselves knowing that they're going to stay loyal to that scene
Anyone watching Last of Us is only planning their own future hell by watching actors do the events of what happens in the Last of Us 2 game. It's the equivalent of spending several days raising chickens in your backyard while knowing your angry neighbor will release his pitbull and bulldog into your backyard to waste your chickens during a weekend.
I think they got Joel right in 1 scene. I believe it was the 1st episode (I could be wrong), when he was standing on a building corner, waiting for Tess to finish meeting with an informant. A firefly recruiter shows up and does the whole “if you’re lost in the dark…” but then Joel cuts him off and retorts, “if you say ‘look for the light’ I’ll break your jaw”. If they made Joel like that entirely, 150% better of a show
@@ekwilliam2974 No it's just that he's Mexican, and it looks like his daughter is black lol. Cringe race swapping for politics is cringe. Respect the source material.
However, I doubt Dwayne Johnson will allow himself being put in one particular position Abby was shown in. Not that I've played TLOU2, mind you, but I've seen... things....
Your criticisms of Ellie are spot on and can be explained by the current zeitgeist post the game's release in 2013. Every leading woman in a film or TV show has to be strong and independent. On top of that they are all smart and thus in charge, as they should be according to the current year. Men are stupid and erratic, unless they are black in which case they are heroes and also smart (but not as smart as the women).
They also need to be ugly-- I-- I mean-- uh-- um-- "not conventonally attractive by normalized social metrics". I'm 100% certain that's one major reason they cast Bella Ramsey. HBO probably wanted to go with Maisie Williams since she... kinda... has a proven acting range in an ensemble cast setting, but since she's like 30 now they were like "nah, need a younger chick plus Maisie Williams is kinda cute so definitely not, who else do we have on the short list from our GoT pool?" The intersectionalist crowd really hate fit and attractive people.
Well said, I think this is the main reason it is difficult to connect with show Ellie. If she was more vulnerable and afraid at times it would really help to connect with the character. Let's be honest, everyone would shit their pants if faced with a clicker. All signs so far point in the direction of badass Ellie, making backflips while headshoting and stabbing infected.
No, instead we're just going to get gay hairy bears, kissing each other and rubbing each other's chest for like 25 minutes. And then it'll look like something from the icon channel you'll forget you're watching an HBO high budget series. .
In a post apocalyptic world the gay minority would become even more a minority, then they will be spread out in groups of survivors. Not to mention homesexuality might become outlawed to encourage procreation to start civilization over.
The thing that made Bella Ramsey good in GoT is how this little kid had a deadpan, monotone, authoritative kind of attitude you wouldn’t expect coming out of a kid. That’s a problem here, because Ellie is a very vibrant and expressive character.
I loved her in GoT in the basically 2 extra-shorts scenes she had... But here...I cant stand her...she is completely out of character... Probably the worst casting of the series (in a bunch of really bad castings overall)
I think these problems could be solved by having a moment where Ellie's casual confidence gets shattered somehow--- a close call, her first look at the brutality of human survivors out in no man's land, etc. Essentially, she needs a "scared straight" moment to knock her down a peg and establish the dynamic we see in the game. Joel's "resolution" to the situation could also showcase the fact that he is brutal and downright scary, and seeing him in that light could change the way Ellie behaves around him. It could also remind Joel that there's no reason he should let Ellie walk all over him, and that just because she's a kid doesn't mean she gets a pass to do and say whatever she wants. Honestly, building up their relationship slightly, then shattering it entirely in this way might be the best thing for a long term payoff that builds throughout the series.
@@danielshults5243 not to spoil, but we get something like it. But it's so short lived and pretty much skipped over that it doesn't accomplish it well enough. She's right back to it afterwards
The problem with this personality changes (primarily Ellie’s). One of the scenes/part that I’ve no idea if is going to have the same impact is when Joel says: “I’m definitely not your father”
I think moments like that will still work. In fact, it was mentioned that they wanted Ellie’s personality a tad more harsh in order to make the contrast between her and Sarah more stark (notice that Sarah was depicted as VERY gentle, kind and almost a little ethereal). I would think this heightens moment’s like ‘I sure as hell ain’t your dad’… and then heightens the impact when they develop this relationship as it’s DESPITE her differences, and more authentic in some ways because she’s not a 1:1 Sarah substitute. He grows to lover her in a fatherly way despite her being a very different person. This approach was confirmed per Druckman, btw
Seeing as how in S2 they’re adapting from TLOU: Part 2, it’s gonna be interesting to see the reactions when Abby Armstrong shows up to take Joel golfing.
They’ve made joel a passive vehicle for Ellie now, so I reckon the audience won’t be as attached resulting in less backlash. Which I’m positive is intentional
Yeah he's calling for red flags when there isn't any huge red flags yet. I'm usually with him 90% of the time, but this is one of those 10%. I'll wait to cry wolf when I actually see the wolf.
Regarding the character of Joel and what happens in the second game, I'd wager they are gonna deviate. Money talks, and Pedro brings a lot of that in with the viewers.
Just for the record, Pedro Pascal grew up, in part, in San Antonio, TX. As someone who grew up in neighboring Arkansas, I think his accent is pretty natural - not over the top or forced.
@@GewalfofWivia lol someone from arkansas and a non texan try to state he has a good texan accent, and as a Texan I disagree. I never said it had to be perfect

One thing this show finally did right: They hired a showrunner (Craig Mazin) who actually loved the game and since playing it wanted to bring this story to television. This is immediately apparent by the care and respect in which the show is put together. There just might be one problem: I think Craig Mazin misunderstood Ellie or accidentally projected the twisted version of her from the 2nd game into the 1st game. In the official podcast for episode 3, he described Ellie as sadistic and a troublemaker, which explains some scenes (like the joyfull killing of the trapped infected guy or the admiring look while Joel kills the FEDRA soldier - while Ellie in the game was horrified in this scene). But "sadistic" is absolutely not how I got to know Ellie in the 1st game, so I am quite worried what they will do to her character. I don't even think that Craig Mazin is screwing this up intentionally, because he got everything else so right and he really seems to care, so it's a real shame that he seems to misunderstand one of the main characters so much.
You're missing the point entirely. The people who say they loved the games mean that they would love to use the game's story to advance their careers and push their politics. Hollywood, HBO, all that crap are not genuine. You can't take anything they say at face value. They are sociopaths. Get it into your head man.
This is weird. I didn't get "sadistic/troublemaker" vibes from Ellie at all. Not even in part 2. Yeah she killed a ton of people but she was blind by revenge. It's not as if she was enjoying all the killing. They were just in the way. If she killed Abby and her crew first none of the other people would have died. And they made a really good cutscene to show how broken she was after torturing that woman I don't remember the name. That's not sadism
So they hired a showrunner who did not understand MC and you say it was a good call? Then they proceeded to raceswap characters because why not. But will they do preteen lesbian fantasy scenes that druckman wanted and was denied in original?
Man that explains a lot. When i first saw her expression at Joel killing the soldier i thought thats just bad acting, but when she killed the zombie in eps 3 i realized they are making a thing out of her wanting to cause pain or something. This comment pretty much confirms it, and thats a bizzare change from the game
Neil Druckmann wasn't the lead director of the original The Last Of Us game. It was actually Bruce Straley who left Naughty Dog in 2017. Hence we got the polarizing version of Part 2 of the game that we did. And now it isnt that surprising that the show is continuing more of the same flavour that we got in second game. RIP OG Joel and Ellie😥
Replace a Christian with a Jew and this is what you get. Western values ans sensitivities replaced by Jewish ones. If anyone thinks this is prejudiced and antiseismitic... You're in denial. Sadly
@Edith Puthie the man didn't say anything about the kiss from the dlc and an overwhelming amount of people don't care that Ellie is gay in the game the Last of us 2 was just shit but the first one is really good. Idk what you read but it wasn't what you typed.
I barely see Joel murdering a raider for Ellie let alone anyone else. Will love to see how they try and pull of this father-daughter bond because right now, it ain’t there, nor do I see the seeds of it.
Nothing from the game is there. i made a comparison video 😁 Were are all the raiders and zombies? They just walk and talk. And they had only a few episodes and half is useless filler
I think a big problem was the casting was way off for Ellie. I'd much rather of watched the season with the actress that played his daughter in the beginning. They had better chemistry, and she had a far more expressive face. I dunno why on earth they cast the Mormont chick from GOT. While she eventually grew on me a little, I still think they could've picked damn near anyone else and it would've been for the better
I agree. The only think Drinker missed was how the Frank and Bill story line in ep.3 took over the 'relationship' hallmarks he mentioned that were supposed belong to Ellie and Joel. The rough survivalist (aka Joel)--but now Bill--learning how to reclaim his humanity from someone who appeared in his life (Ellie with Joel but Frank in ep. 3) bringing a helplessness that Bill recognized as needing him to defend, and in exchange Frank teaches Bill that there is a difference between surviving and LIVING.
Kind of gross still. The show managed to turn off the half of Americans who dislike the wokeness of the Letter People thrust into every HBO production now. And, of course, the Letter People must ALWAYS be the victims and noble characters too.
@@ccchhhrrriiisss100 okay snowflake. Even the drinker himself said the episode was fantastic. He felt emotion, and anyone who isn’t closeted and as such self hating probably felt it to. The drinker is the first to point out wokeness and he was fine with episode 3.
I think the problem with Ellie is the same with every teen character in pos apocalyptic settings: they are generally annoying and you want them to die so the adults don’t have to constantly save them from themselves
To be fair, Ellie keeps asking for a gun so she can be more helpful and protect herself, but Joel keeps denying her. She will soon become very useful though if they continue the close adaptation of the pivotal game scenes
Okay.. but, if you have played the game or watched someone else play it, let's be honest- we ALL hated Ellie in the game! She was annoying and making a fuss out of anything.. but then we empathized with her when she was going through tough experiences and we saw those fluctuations of emotions! Personally, the turning point for me was when (SPOILERS AHEAD) She was almost raped and killed by this ped0 psychopath
@@Oroxom3 I loved how Bills note was, Joel we were never finds but I respected you. Even after 20 years he never fully trusted Joel actually said a lot about Joel's character.
You’ll notice that TV show Ellie hasn’t had any moment of weakness yet, no tears, no panicked reactions or helpless situations. She’s been made to look invulnerable which, unfortunately makes any character slightly unlikeable from a viewer perspective as there is nothing to relate to with her.
@@WhiteWolf-eb4mr yeah she’s not the best, but she can only work with what the writers and director give her too and that doesn’t seem to be a whole lot.
I think their intention is to make her more independent from Joel as a character. In the first game, Joel and Ellie's characters and arcs are entirely intertwined, and entirely dependent on one another. They might be trying to make her more of a character apart from him to make the transition into Part II more natural.
@@lordmelvin9310 ....Yeah basically they completely changed the characters in the 2nd game in order to fit the narrative of the story and now in order to not look stupid they're making the characters in the TLOU more like the characters portrayed in TLOU2 !
@@lordmelvin9310 thats kind of the issue, if its true, which i personally am not super worried about it, we really dont have enough of ellie and joel on their own yet to makea decision in my opinion. but if they are changing them in the show to make the arc from part 2 feel more natural, it lends creedence to the idea that the characters in part 2 are tonally and charecteristically different than part 1, which would point to a bad understanding of the first game and its core themes. which seeing as druckmann was fully in charge for part 2, and is the producer of the show, does not provide alot of hope
I think they are rushing too much, leaving out a lot of Ellie and Joel time together and how much strong their father/daughter relationship grows over time.
Agreed, they don't need to do the whole first game in one season. There's plenty to focus on and expand on. They could even branch away from part 2 game storyline.
No.. they're trying to rush past all that to get to the trans sex scenes so they can claim they did something provocative and call themselves an ally of woke.
Big agree, the newest episode rushed Tommy's part way too fast and left out alot, they pretty much speedran the settlement and left it like it was in TLOU 2, it also made the part where Ellie tells Joel that she's not like his daughter kind of out of place and lacking the impact the game version had.
My favorite scene so far is after Tess dies, when Joel turns to Ellie and says "Now we truly are the last of us". Perfectly adapted from the game. Sent chills down my spine.
Having not seen the show, I genuinely can't tell if this is real or one of those "my favorite part was when he said 'what are we, some kind of the last of us?' and then lasted all over the US" jokes
Raul Julia in Street fighter was just so good. He looked like he was giving the role his all and enjoying every second. That is just so pleasant to watch. And it's so bloody lacking in today's media!
I learned a long time ago that with these modern serialized shows, it pays to sit out and wait until they're done before getting involved. Yeah, you miss out on participating in the "water cooler talk" at work or whatever, but you also don't have to deal with the anguish fans of the shows go through as something they once enjoyed so much decays and leaves them feeling enraged for having ever gotten so involved in something so ultimately pointless.
This was my retroactive justification for never getting in to GoT lol. For _years_ I had no idea what everyone was talking about, and sometimes even felt left out, then by the end of it I felt like I dodged a bullet, pretending this was part of my plan all along!
Holy shit, fantastic video! This sums up my thoughts so far pretty much exactly. You absolutely nailed the character changes to Joel and Ellie to better fit the versions they gave us in part 2, but there's one piece about Ellie I feel you didn't fully address. You mentioned how she's capable, confident, and unflinching to the violence around her, but it's more than that. She's being portrayed as sadistic, likely to make her brutal revenge-fueled massacre across Seattle in season seem more believable. First she seems to find it "cool" when Joel beats that soldier to death, rather than disturbed or at all uncomfortable. In the first game, Ellie would often comment on Joel's brutality both in scripted moments and randomly during combat. And then when she kills the stalker in the basement, she slowly cuts into it with her knife before she puts it down. Neither of these are things Ellie would do in the first game
Ellie slowly cuts the forehead to observe how the fungus grow in the zombie's brain, not for some random sadistic pleasure....and given when you commented you've probably seen episode 4 already where Ellie was explicitly shown to hesitate before finally shooting someone to save Joel. The Ellie in the show and the Ellie in the game are both naïve and compassionate, just not in the same way. And I would argue that the show Ellie is not changed to fit part 2 (as a lot of whiners seems to believe so), but to fit the post-apocalyptic world more. The kid literally went to military school surrounded by kids who can't stop talking about resistance and rebellion while, simultaneously, never been outside the wall and never seen a real life-threatening zombie. If anything, the game Ellie is more explicitly naive and compassionate in the "wrong" way, I for one am glad that the show producers decided to change it up instead of following whatever the source material went with, it implies actual thought put into adapting it into actual screenplay.
@@muyangcheng3874 She is 100% changed to fit TLOU2's Ellie. They make her struggle against Joel to save Tess who is doomed anyway, she smells the gun she picks up and then observes psychotically as Joel is beating the soldier.
@@Pedro_Le_Chef and in doing so they are sadly making her character so 2D. It should be that there are no "good guys" or "bad guys". Just people making realistic decisions. I feel the show is just turning the dial up to 100 with the virtue signaling; especially after the last episode. The game was much more nuanced in my view.
Same. They emasculated Obi Wan Kenobi a master Jedi and generations older than Leia. Yet Leia takes a domineering attitude over him. I swear if I had a daughter she would be taught to respect the her elders before her own ego.
She reminds me more of Ahsoka in the early seasons; arrogant, inexperienced, naive, cocky. BUT I'm hopeful that Ellie's character evolves into a more mature version of her character. I'd point to Ahsoka as a good parallel for Ellie's arc.
I never could stand Ellie. A cure at this point is a complete waste of time. Their situation is equivalent to that from the 1985 version of the original “Day of the Dead”. That film though I think it was 500,000 to 1 on Zombies to people. This show and the game it’s not that high but still humanity is basically done.
Everyone knows whats gonna to happen. And everyone knows why this "Show" got green lit... And that green light was Last of Us 2. People are trying so hard hoping its not going to go there. But oh yeahhh, its going. Its going there all right l🤣
I’ve discovered over the years that most shows follow the same format: the first couple episodes they try to give people what they think people want. The next couple episodes they start to work in a little bit of what they want to desensitize and prep the viewers for episode 5 without scaring them off. Then around episode 5 you start to see the story/messages/values of the writers. They figure that by then the viewer has already invested so much time into the show that they will tolerate crap that would have them turn it off if it was in episode 1. Now, that breakdown was made when most shows were 13 episodes, so the timeline may be a bit accelerated now. But I would bet those cracks you’re seeing is the writers preparing you to transition from watching the story you wanted to see to watching the story they want to tell.
My main confusion is why do they want to tell the same story over and over for the clapping seals? Do they really despise people that much or is it just laziness/swimming with the cultural currents. After all it’s difficult writing complex characters and whining narcissism is what they are used to and know well. Why is our culture such whiny narcissists?
@@Sergen191 tv shows are obviously different from games and offer a different experience. Not everybody wants to play a game. Some people just want to experience the story. Also no it doesn't have to perfectly on script to be good. I mean the section they cut out wasn't all that important anyways and had little bearing on what happens after. The section was more so to get people used to the gameplay rather than advance the story. The show uses it as an opportunity to learn more about the lives of 2 characters we knew little about in the game. And also further drives the point of love and protecting it.
I agree that Ellie should be a combination of sassy and vulnerable that is not easy to replicate. It's a very fine line and a tribute to the voice actress that nailed in the game. I think the show version of Ellie has been a little too heavy on the sassy side of the equation which isn't surprising since that seems to be Bella Ramsey's wheelhouse. I thought the third episode did a better job of balancing it out. We shall see as the show continues.
yeah it didnt really work show ellie seems a bit younger and comes off as a bratty kid, Game ellie feels slightly older and more athletic, going to be harder selling this ellie running around with a hunting rifle,
@@HiroshimaXl no one said anything about her being weak, but she's definitely vulnerable. She's a young girl who has lost everything in her life, her parents and her stability and doesn't always know how to cope. She has moments where she tries to hide how scared and clueless she is, and while she always pushes through, she doesn't do it without struggling. Play through the whole section in Tommy's base and tell me she isn't vulnerable :v
In the game Ellie was told at the outset to do whatever Joel told her, and she did up until he was in danger and she provided assistance. This became a big area of development for both characters as he later learned to give her more leeway to be more than a burden and she learned that the more direct her participation, the closer she was to the danger. It wasn't self-reliance but mutual trust they each leaned to give into and both benefited from in the story. It sounds like this misses that point, which made up for a good portion of the game's initial relationship between them. It's a gaping hole in character development that sounds like it didn't have to be missed out on.
I remember that point in the game when Joel explained his idea to Ellie on how to handle a difficult situation that was most certainly a trap. He gave her a rifle to provide covering fire for him while he went down into an urban ambush area to retrieve supplies. His face was a myriad of extreme concern, sorrow for giving her such a lethal weapon, and fear that his plan would somehow go south and they'd both be killed. It was one of the most tense scenes that I can recall.

I do notice that Ellie in the show is the dominant character. Joel is weirdly silent in a lot of the scenes. Ellie is supposedly to be inquisitive and curious, but I hope Joel sets to the tone later on. I do not want this to be an Ellie show where her curiosity is what sets things in motion. I was happy to see in episode 3 Joel had that 3 rules talk with Ellie and Ellie says "anything you say goes." Let's see if this time she listens
That’s how the dynamic was in the early parts of the game though? Joel is closed off and hesitant, Ellie is annoyingly open and inquisitive. Ellie leads the conversations in the early part of the game, because she’s the only one of the two that wants to have a conversation
@@Vokon he does and i sadly disagree… especially having played both games multiple times (especially the first one) i wish they would have set their morales aside and explored the emotional relationship a bit more. Eventhough the DLC was a great extension to get to know more about Ellie, I think the fans fell in love with joel and her. So wasting a whole episode in an already short first season with ellie and riley was annoying to say the least. I also didn’t really like that they adjusted joel‘s character to fit the narrative of the second game more. Why fix arguably one of the greatest storylines just to justify the extremely divisive second one… Obviously this is my personal opinion but i don‘t think the show was executed anywhere as well as it could have been.
It really sucks that they took away interaction between Joel, Ellie, and Bill. That whole section of the game brings Joel and Ellie closer because of Bill’s eccentricity and it teaches Ellie respect for what is out in the world that’s so new to her. They could have kept in backstory and still kept in stuff from the game. Like, cut the running and eating strawberries part and replace that with JOEL AND ELLIE WITH BILL. Bill surviving would make us empathize deeper with Bill and really deliver on how destitute the TLOU world is.
I commented on tiktok about this that i dont know how te feel about the episode and im mixed about it. Got attacked by so many people for giving an opinion that i wonder how this show will continue for its viewers.
Sure but there is only three episodes out. We don’t know when that will happen. It may happen in the next episode. We can’t say it didn’t happen yet if we haven’t even seen it.
I like that they got Marlene’s voice actress to play her on the show. It’s uncanny how much she looks like the character. Also, when they bring Abby on, I think Mackenzie Davis from Terminator: Dark Fate would be good if she put on a hundred pounds of muscle. Or they could just cut their losses and get John Cena.
So true. When I first saw Marlene I was like.. She looks and sounds exactly like the in-game version and then I found out it was the same actor. Amazing.
I love MacKenzie Davis but I feel like she's too old. Maybe I'm just picky about the game but I feel like abbie had a distinct look having like a rugged baby face. Not to mention she's around ellies age. The female terminator vs the actress we have playing ellie right now would be too ridiculous a contrast. Their fight is supposed to feel lopsided but not that much.
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who feels that Bella Ramsey as Ellie just feels somewhat off. You hit the nail on the head. Ellie should have been the most important casting decision and I feel like they chose a popular actress who somewhat fit over someone who could've really embodied the role.
@Monkeypaw??? could be the fault of the writing. All I know is that something about the character feels a bit off. Hopefully that will clear up in future episodes.
@@TK-sn3rx Yeah as I said, Bella is a fantastic actress and she did great in the first episode, yeah there were something a bit off but you know, it's never the actress fault as they're just doing what the script told them to do
Recreated scenes don’t translate to faithfulness Joel: changed from a gun runner to a battery runner, doesn’t hunt down and break Robert’s leg before torturing him for answers and instead just finds him dead, isn’t a twisted man who instead gets angry at Tess after finding out she’s infected but instead a defeated man who is cold to the fact Tess: no longer kills the men who Robert hired to jump her but instead works out the misunderstanding and is let go, isn’t the ruthless and respected criminal that had abandoned hope until seeing Ellie’s mark and pleading to Joel that there’s enough between them that he has to feel obligated to get Ellie to his brother, that is before she then refuses to become an infected and stands her ground against the militia that ultimately shoot her down Infected: no longer any spores, now share a hive mind, no longer cry or contribute to Tess’ story about how the people might still be alive but not in control Ellie: no longer an emotionally vulnerable kid being traded around and defensive of those she cares about, now an overconfident and constantly snarky girl Marlene: no longer is she the only firefly to survive the ambush but she also doesn’t know Ellie this time around after having been a friend of her mother and seen her grow up, to the degree where she has to chain her, but instead captured Ellie after she was found with the bite mark Bill: no longer the bitter, controlling man who begrudgingly helps Joel out after being indebted to him and feels betrayed by Frank running off Frank: no longer revealed to have come to hate bill and feel suffocated, trying to escape and instead getting bitten and then deciding to hang himself No longer are Joel and Tess gun runners, no longer do the militia pursue them to the capitol building, no longer does Tess beg of Joel to take Ellie to Tommy (having been a firefly) and instead to just take her as far as bill (because apparently bill would care), no longer does Joel immediately tell Ellie upon Tess’ death to stay silent and do everything he says when he says it (instead he now does this days into their journey), no longer can Ellie reveal her immunity through openly breathing spores as that concept has been excised altogether and no longer is Ellie remotely comparable to Sarah which is the whole point and neither is the story told through Joel’s pov and instead he’s just one of many - all these decisions snowballing into greater problems down the line The only reason for people to think that it’s being faithful at all is that they only have a superficial recollection of events and can’t immediately see the changes to not only the story but the characters
Hmm but I wouldn’t want a 1:1 it would just be people cosplaying the game. Here they get creative changes like making the infected have sporey mouth projections. Tbh Tess couldn’t receive a lot of growth or impact from the game because of how short we spent time with her. The game had to introduce game mechanics, hide behind a wall to not get shot, in the show we get people shoot at each other and miss. Faithful to the series means Abby in LOU 2 LOL 😂 and we both know HBO and LOU 2 are gonna be 1:1
forgot that he isnt distanced from Tommy. They hadnt talked for years in the game and now Joel panics after not hearing from him. I think most the changes have worked for the series. But anyone else think Pedro is kinda phoning it in? Troy Baker does it way better.
I remember Ellie in-game has different idle animation, when she was first handed to Tess&Joel, Ellie's body language was timid-shaky-afraid (distrusting perhaps?), and her dialogues also has those vibes. As the game progresses, Ellie saved Joel, got her gun, and her dialogue became progressively calmer, same with her body language/idle animation animation. Meanwhile, the film's interpretation was just 'abrasive'. I'd personally cast Dafne Keen (X-23 from Logan), as she managed to convey a wider range of expression throughout the movie, but that's just my opinion.
Dafne would have been WAY better as a pick for Ellie, she could definitely add some of the same depth to facial expressions and she's just a killer actress, but shes not young enough to play Ellie anymore (i think shes either 18 or 20). Everything Bella does feels way too forced and I'll just never buy that she's the same character. She just can't hold the screen in the way she needs to. The actress that played Joel's daughter would have probably been a better pick for Ellie honestly, she has way more charisma than Bella does.
You are remembering wrong. She was always asking questions, always making sure she was heard, and always trying to prove herself useful. She asked A LOT of questions before tess died, she fought a lot for joel to give her a gun on bill's town, she was absolutely antagonistic against bill, always showing sarcasm and rudeness and not shuting up when joel asked, so much so he just gave up right about the middle of that part. On the car she poked fun out of joel just like sarah would have done, she clearly wanted him to help the hunter faking injury, she was really agressive against the hunters, and got really mad when joel scolded her for saving his life.
I don't think you can blame the actress because it seems obvious to me that that's how the director wanted the scenes to play out. It's not as though she's incapable of playing subtle. I thought she did that well with her scenes trying to explain to Joel the tess wasn't her fault. Also the scene when she saw the dead bodies. Also i think you're seeing the game with rose colored glasses. Yeah she was more reserved meeting them first in the game but she started asking 100 questions and quipping away ellie style really quick into meeting them. I mean she instantly was fighting with Bill when they first meet. I think it's too early to judge character development when the characters haven't had time to develop. I rather they stick to some small aspects of characterization from the game too but I do think there's other ways they've improved in the foreshadowing. It's not exactly inept to focus on both ellie not trusting Joel and being naive. The classic time tested play will be she gets in over her head and finally realizes she's not invincible. Then Joel saves her. Boom two birds with one stone she matures and she begins to trust Joel. Writing her a little less apprehensive isn't going to do any thing to sabotage the narrative.
Wish he'd f**k off there already, and stop stinking up the gaming industry. Most overrated hack, in gaming history. He makes Hideo Kojima look like Kurosawa.
As a gay man, Im glad youre not a homophobe who only critiques stories if they are focusing on gay characters, but you give merit to good writing regardless. Thank you for your honesty.
As long as they don't change the ending of the first game for the show I will be satisfied. The build to that ending and just how it made me feel I will never forget. They NEED to adapt that to the show.
*shakes magic 8-ball* Outlook not so good. If you think they aren't going to try to redeem the Mengelian butcher masquerading as a doctor at the end you're outta your gourd.
I think next episode will be the make or break for the series. Ellie's reaction to hostile humans (which she isn't accustomed to, unlike zombies) will determine if the character can show vulnerability and not be "perfect". Either way, well know the show's future for sure after that one Edit: Episode 5 made the series for me. Ellie showed plenty of vulnerability and charm, and Joel was done right afterall. If the show keeps going in that direction, the future is bright
Considering the fact that she picked up a gun at the end of episode 3, I doubt there'll be a tonal shift. She's still going to be invincible and invulnerable.
@@jelly-li1vx I think the show is really good and I'm enjoying it. The elements that Drinker pointed out will prevent it from being "great", but that's about it. It's still definitly worth a watch so far
6:16 - 6:44 Oh how E8 'When We Are In Need' would change your mind on Bella Ramsey's Ellie. Because *holy crap* did she knock her performance out of the park!
I know right? episode 4 and 5 were the episodes where I was assured that her character is going down the right path, but damn episode 8 was really good.
@@HartlyLion honestly I'm so confused why people are saying she can't act and doesn't give a captivating performance, ep 8 was the icing on the cake for her character with her acting displaying how someone would realistically react in a situation like that
I got attacked online for expressing disappointment in the 3rd episode. I love The Last Of Us, it's possibly my favourite game of all time. A game where the gameplay is nothing compared to the storylines. My favourite section is the battery/school. To me, it is huge for the plot development, but the writers of the show thought otherwise, and labelled Bill's section a massive plot hole. I loved the section due to the bickering between Bill and Ellie, Bill's portentous words to Joel, Bill's caustic lines, Joel trying to keep the bickering pair apart, Joel growing to realise Ellie is more than she seems, the setting of the town and the school, the twist of the battery missing, the gymnasium scene, stumbling by luck on the battery that Frank stole and the Frank reveal. It is the best bit of the game for me. I voiced this and was attacked, had my intelligence questioned and was mocked. All because the bit I looked forward to being recreated the most was ignored and removed. I was buzzing about Offerman being cast, and he did do a good job - they both did - it just wasn't what I'd hoped for. Apparently, that means I must be stupid.
That *was* some of the best stuff from the game. The characters were all written really strong in that whole segment. Lots of tension, character development, action, and humor. Not to mention the intrigue Bill brought to the screen in the game. The slow reveal that he was gay in the game was brilliantly understated as well. I still thought Ep3 was really well done, but I too missed the fun and character building moments that they cut out of that part. It sounds like the biggest reason is for cutting out action set pieces. They wanted to cut a lot of action for the show adaptation.
yeah the same. its even worse with this show bcuz TLOU fanbase is prolly one of the most hated fanbase in gaming industry mainly bcuz many of these fanboys gave tlou2 10/10 ignoring pacing issues, lack of logic and repetetivegameplay.
While I do understand the let down of not getting what you expect (I felt this a lot in season 3 of Atlanta), I also appreciate what they did. For me the game and this episode tell a similar story in that they both have the same message, but from two different perspectives. I feel like the game says "if you close yourself off from everyone and everything, you'll end up like Bill, hateful and alone" while the show said "If you open yourself up to loving again, you can actually have a nice life, even if the world is fucked". At the end of the day, I get the part that people wanted Ellie and Bill to interact and so on, but also. In the game Bill isn't a huge part of it (really... he's not), so I don't really see how this change massively effects the overall story other than just wanting something more true to the game. A critique I had myself was the pacing. I felt the episode could easily have been shorter and/or focused a bit more on Joel and Ellie if to show contrast or similarities between the "couples" so to speak.
"Retroactively trying to validate Neil Druckmann's choices." This is what I was worried about. Think back to how hard he doubled down on being right with the second game, and how we were all just too stupid to get it. When I heard he was involved with the show, I was worried. What a shame.
@@Laprika Nobody is saying it doesn't make sense. But they brutally murder the main character of the first game fairly early on, and warp his character to make it more believable..
@@kristen5149 Revenge is not a bad thing, Ellie would've been justified in killing Abby just by virtue of biting off two of Ellies fingers. Which in a post apocalypse setting will make your survival all the more difficult.
I just finished season 1 finale I really enjoyed most of this show. I completely get why you were predicting the calm before the storm, which is a understandable in modern TV and movies.. However after watching this, I was pleased to see how close it held to the source material. I'm looking forward to your Post Season review. Thanks for the work you put into the Industry.
In what way did they make Ellie the dominant one though? You have to substantiate because from what I've seen, Joel has been the one calling the shots, getting them out of sticky situations, and is constantly talking down to Ellie just like in the game. Like when Tess says she's staying and Ellie doesn't want to leave her, Joel grabs her and they take off. He maneuvered around clickers and he and Tess got them through that museum while Ellie was just watching. He killed that military guard when shit hit the fan. Dude is risking a ton for this operation while Ellie is just dead weight and actually almost cost them a couple of times(stepping on that dead body on the stairs, gasping at the clicker). Honestly, they make Ellie seem super helpless at times, which drives me crazy because she grew up in a world where survival is key, she seemed way more competent in the game.
Glad im not the only one having trouble accepting the Ellie casting. Somehow the animated character shows more emotion with her face than the live version
I didn’t think I could be the only one out there that felt this way about Ellie, but it’s still nice to be validated out loud 😂 She’s offered such a 2-dimensional performance so far and it worked well for GOT, but here her emotionally portrayable layers, or lack thereof, are on full display and it doesn’t work.
Ellie wasn’t a very multidimensional character until a little bit into the game, there’s still time for Bella Ramsey to show us what she’s got. I’m waiting until the end of the show before I cast my judgement
@@schl0ck nobody is "multidimentional" in The Last of Us... there is a single "arc" (more like a dragged on cliche) but not many "layers" in their characters...
Let's face it. . . Certain stories were told best in their original form, and no other genre can encapsulate or reproduce the experience that the initial iteration was able to provide.
Makes it funnier that they try to claim their subjective opinions on the quality of mediums as objective simply because they're a major figure in their chosen medium. It's like a health inspector saying his fields better than the workplace safety instructors and claiming because he's an inspector he's right
That is completely false. You are all these pre conceived notions on the show because you played the game. No fucking shit you aren't gonna feel the same way because YOU FUCKING ALREADY EXPERIENCED IT.
I mean is this really our opinion coming off the 3rd episode where they just handled bills story considerably better than they did in the game. Not saying I expect this to be better than the game but I'm still thinking there's a small chance it's possible. 1-2 ain't a bad record to start with.
I don't agree. The problem is not that it's not possible, the problem is that the people who do these kinds of projects these days are all incompetent and care more about THE MESSAGE than about quality.
I'm being glass half full here - but maybe that's to show even greater drama later on. Like they are gonna show them have to go from a more disconnected place to a place where they really love and rely on each other. And if it becomes the inevitability that they kill of Joel, I think that would make the casual viewer even more devastated than if they went from being okay to great friends. I dunno, spitballing here on the intent. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because the show has been so good thus far and they took a year to make it (and waited another 6 months to release) so I have imagine they took plenty of time to figure out the beats and feel of each of the nine episodes. This project wasn't hastily thrown together and included the originators of the game, so I have to imagine they aren't going to suffer the pitfalls of a rush job of people who don't care about the source material.
@Mark Yeah about that. I haven’t exactly played the full game but I’ve seen all the cutscenes. Many of those scenes had way more emotional impact than the show has. It’s a hard act to follow. Muted appreciation or “meh” is fine. The interesting expansions like Indonesia and Bill/Frank’s stories are welcome additions though ie. Opportunities to explore and create interesting characters, scenes and short stories along the way
I still can’t tell if I’m actually engaged in the Joel/Ellie relationship in the show or if I’ve just been predisposed to care because of the game. I agree 100% on Ellie, though. At this point in the game I was already endeared to her, but I don’t really feel the same in show and it absolutely has everything to do with her writing. She 180s between hostile and chipper inquisitiveness it’s like whiplash sometimes and doesn’t feel natural. I also get the sense from a few of her scenes that they’re definitely trying to set her up for the narrative in part 2, which is messing with the impression you get of her present character.
showrunners actually talked about how ellie and joel in this show are connected by violence while putting down joel's daughter for just reacting like any normal kid would to seeing their father attack a familiar person. it's like they forget how ellie and joel's relationship wasn't originally like that and instead try to retcon aspects of ellie's characterization to being more ruthless and less empathetic. also the scene in which ellie curiously cuts a trapped infected on the head (knowing it was once a person), with those emotionless eyes of hers? i felt kind of disgusted watching that.
@@altairdance0284 omg I felt the same way. I actually almost turned it off, like something was just so psychotic about it, it literally made me dislike her even more. Why should I root for an obnoxious sadistic psychopath?
This is one of those cases where I actually got lucky. In a vacuum, having not played the games (always meant to get around to it but never had the time), the show has been pretty good. Especially compared to a lot of the trash that many networks have been pushing. I am kind of curious how the hell they made it from Boston all the way to Kansas city without any problems, but I am also curious why they went that route in the first place when they were going to Wyoming.
As an aside in reality in that scenario I’d get a boat from Boston sail it to New Orleans then up the Mississippi to Missouri before embarking on the zombie gauntlet.
mhm. they agreed to do this show bcuz they saw a potentioal to pujt THE MESSAGE in the second season. trust me. this will be another ruined franchise. bella is nothing like ellie. even in acting and behaviour. she doesnt even try to act like 14 yo girl whos scared of the entire pandemic thing.... she just acts like Abby, ellie didnt even act like that in TLOU2/
@@ImotekhtheStormlord-tx2it they def made her way more psychopathic for some reason. From the way she was watching Joel kill the guard to her calmly that infected with a cold expression like yikes...
@@isadora6092 Not quite, she was raised by the military because they ran the orphanage and the school, doesn't mean they were training them to kill, her being able to shoot at all was a guard, teaching her and a friend to shoot using rats as targets. They weren't any hints at all that the military were in any way trying to train them to be soldiers in the game. Being born post outbreak means nothing in that she was born in one of the walled off cities where it's mostly safe outside interacting with the smuggler's areas. Her first human kill in game clearly showed that while she understood the need of killing that bandit to save Joel, it still made her mentality shake a little at taking a still human life. Heck a good 50% of her conversation after leaving the initial city was wonder at all the things there had been before the outbreak as there was so much she never saw since she was born in the walled off city.
Ellie is the weakest part about the show so far, because she's only 1/2 Ellie as if you wrote her from memory after 9 years , they got the swearing and curious traits but forgot the innocence and vulnerability.
I think they might be trying to go the opposite way with her character From dialogue I think they want her to start arrogant and reckless because of her immunity, but slowly make her more vulnerable and careful as she has close calls with death. Like tess' line, being immune to the fungus doesn't make you immune to being ripped apart
@@tuoshiwan5046 Actually this seems like a reasonable assessment. Starts out sassy, overconfident, and annoying. Becomes sensitive, respectful, and mature. I hope that's where they take it.
Even if the HBO series finishes the first season great, I know there is a ticking time bomb with Part II just waiting and that pours cold water on any talk of more seasons.
I'm loving the TV series but I have to agree with you regarding Ellie. From the first episode I thought both the dialogue and Bella's acting painted her way too belligerent and street wise. Ironically way too similar to Joel. I guess Druckmann's teeing her up to become Rambo in the 2nd game lol ! Yes Ellie kicked out in the game but she was also vulnerable and playful at times. Qualities and traits that eventually made Joel much more protective towards her. In the TV show I've not seen the vulnerable and playful side to Ellie. She comes across as more surly and cocky. It's a shame because it's those traits that give Ellie's character such warmth. As for sticking a knife in the zombies head in the cellar...nope, way too early and so out of character from the early Ellie in the game. Your view of the two characters personalties in the game is spot on. It was their traits that gave each other so much that they both needed. The second game sucked all those personalty traits away from them in order to fit the story. It didn't work, it just messed the continuity up and took a giant dump on the first game. Like you say both characters are being portrayed more like the characters in the 2nd game. Does Druckmann think gamers have forgotten what the original characters were like lol ??
It might have unbelievably good source material, but it's still getting woked to oblivion. There is no way she will get some significant vulnerabilities. The show is excellent by today's standards but as I see it, it will eventually fall. Just like The Witcher did.
@@Shoxic666 ...Yeah she looked as though she enjoyed it. A rather strange choice by both writer and director. It created the wrong image of Ellie for me. Mind you Druckmann did turn Ellie into Rambo in TLOU2 and perhaps he's taking Ellie in that direction so the difference doesn't look as bizarre as it did in the second game to gamers who'd played the first game.
I think that despite the points being made by the drinker being accurate at the time it turns out that it was kinda nessisary for the pay off. Bella Ramsey plays a more realistic version of Ellie. Her cocky, eager and arrogant nature was just a facade to hide how powerless and scared she is which is most evident in episode 6 where she says she can't do this without Joel and her eagerness towards violence is also key as after killing David she realises that there's nothing cool about murder. There's just destruction. Also Bella Ramsey now plays the more optimistic Ellie after episode 3 which is an improvement. The only real criticism is that the show lacks action. In the Kansas section and David section they could've had more action.
@@specialkcitizen6263 honestly I think your on your own there. One of the universal praises of the Last of Us show is the pacing being in incredible and ALMOST every episode contributing to character growth and plot progression in a natural way while being tense and enjoyable in a similar but distinct way from the games as the small changes provide Easter Eggs and extent the Lore of the Last of Us universe.
I agree. I haven't played the games, but I liked her character, especially seeing through her facade. She's grown as an orphan, never had parents or anyone to look after her, her best and only friend dies in front of her. It's more real for her to have grown very fast, and have created a tough facade for herself as a survival mechanism.
@Dman How? The only real problem I have with the show is that the characters are nerfed which hurts especially for Joel as it makes the future Hospital scene and his survival completely unbelievable.
The Indonesia scenes are so well done. Honestly the best acting in performance I’ve seen on the show so far. You can feel the tension in there throughout the entire time. It tells you just enough to give you an idea of how chaos started. Simply amazing. Meanwhile, every Ellie scene snaps me out of the world. Really annoying. The actress is definitely the weakest link and that’s a huge red flag for future seasons.
Personally, Bella Ramsey is a fine actress… a little weird looking with those tiny eyes, though. I blame the lame jokes and edgy attitude written for her. Horrible 🤢
Trust me, no show has ever kept me so scared about its future than this one. It's a bittersweet thing. I feel I'm satisfied, but at the same time, because of that, I fear such satisfaction will vanish very soon.
I feel the same way. In addition to drinker's worries about the depiction of Joel, I also feel like the show has been a lot more "on the nose" with certain thematic/character moments, whereas the first game tended to let the moment speak for itself. For example, when they're about to get caught outside the wall at Boston, Joel has a flashback so audience knows "OOH his daughter was a little girl and Ellie a little girl too!! 😱" So far I'm satisfied, but I worry things will start to fall flat as the story progresses.
I made three predictions about this show before episode 1 released. 1 Joel would be a metrosexual wimp 2 there would be almost no infected scenes featured. 3 they would take full advantage of this opportunity to really dial into Bill's gayness. In three short episodes, all have come to pass. I too had major reservations about what this series would do. After episode 3, the message is clear. This is only a The Last of Us property in title alone. Neil has officially self destructed his own creation.
Having watched the latest episode I sadly agree with the drinker. Joel was dumbed down and turned into a scared bitter man. Basically they nerfed him so that the series will better link to the Joel from Part 2. It’s sad, they have such a well balanced story, I don’t mind Joel and Ellie’s small talk and of course they had to include new dialogue but every interaction shows Ellie as witty and funny while Joel is just grumpy. (Ps i still can’t fully believe Bella Ramsey as Ellie, especially if we compare her to Ashley Johnson, she is on a whole another planet)
@@Julian-oy7hx his brutal and becomes protective over Ellie. I get what they saying about Joel from the series at this point i can't see this character pointing a gun at innocent people and killing them just so he can protect Ellie
As a young performer, I think Bella Ramsey has a fairly unenviable task. She's also what you might call "a flavor of the month", a blank-ish slate for the part of the determined teenager/young woman. She has been absolutely typecast into that role, which is not being written with any particular nuance in most cases. That type of character is almost invariably a precocious know-it-all who doesn't grow much from start to finish. Out of curiosity, I watched Catherine called Birdy for comparison, and yeah, it was just a medieval version of the same person she's been playing repeatedly. I think that's more down to the director and to current expectations than it is to her talent, which is not being all that challenged.
You just said she basically only plays the same role with different backgrounds. Is it possible she's simply young and not very talented? She certainly goes out of her way to push The Message, so I don't see how she gets a pass here as some kind of victim. As an aside that is.
@@liamphibia Viggo Mortesen never read the Lord of the Rings book anyways but still give a great performance thanks to the filmmakers' skill in giving him a great character. Bella isn't part of the writers, she's just an actor following what the director and writer told her to do so it's not really her task to play the game first in order to play the role
It is unfortunate as Elllie is a well drawn character in the game. She shows weakness and strength as a 14 year old girl. Her facial expressions and eyes are able to express so much emotion. The bonding of Joel and Ellie is a central theme, as well as their growth as individuals.
Ellie in the games was a full grown adult playing a teen. Bella Ramsy is a teen trying to convey adult emotions. You should give them a break for trying to compete with a whole ass adult with a lifetime of experience.
Some issues here. Joel wasn’t a former soldier and he also seems very skilled with guns. I don’t think hitting a charging superhuman fungus beast that wants to tear you apart limb from limb is going to be a clean shot, and him “losing control” is a great way for them imo, to humanize him and add some layers of severe PTSD to his character. In real life people aren’t killing machines like video game pro tags and him having knee pain, PTSD and signs of aging is a great way to add more layers of depth to him that aren’t easy to pull of with the constraints of games. As for him meandering through scenes as you put it, I don’t really see how. He’s terrified of connecting with anyone else after the losses he’s been dealt and he seems genuinely unable to relate to other people in any way which makes him seem even more emotionally broken. All valid complaints I suppose but I disagree
I think the 3rd episode undermined the danger of the world by making Bill's situation too comfortable when compared to the game. It also left out Joel and Ellie risking their lives to recover a truck battery because one is just given to them along with a bunch of other supplies.
The whole reason Bill and Frank fell out in the game was because Bill was too afraid to leave and stop relying on his traps, and Frank just wanted to get the heck out of that place. Constant danger puts a strain on most romantic relationships.
Agree. Im still willing to watch for how despite the toddler playing ellie but those kinds of changes worry me about what theyll do to more important moments

True and wheres all the infected? Joel and Ellie driving away at the end of this episode listening too linda ronstadt definitely makes the world seem less dangerous on the show than it is in the games.
Thus show made me replay the game. It's better than I remember. At least that will always be there..I was lucky enough to play the original completely fresh. I knew nothing of it until my brother threw tue disc at me and DEMANDED i play it. One best game experiences ever. Period
@@oogaboogie I think the success of the first game is largely on Bruce Straley who was in the position to shut down Druckmann's retardation when it spiraled out of control.
The first three eps have covered a part in the game that Ellie didn’t really even in the games have much to work with. The next part however in Pittsburgh and with Sam and Henry Will definitely be the real test if Bella Ramsey can show the emotions Ellie conveys through because in the games the characters are not close at all until ellie saves Joel from getting drowned by killing that guy. From there on joel begins to teach her directly more and more with survival and you see the relationship really build. So I’m optimistic it will work itself out as we get going.
Yeah don't expect any of that. Sure Sam and Henry plot but the location is now different Kansas City not Pittsburgh. They used the hotel with Tess instead of the skyscraper so that whole scene is toast. It's going to be very different from here out.
The point of the 3rd episode wasn’t just to show Bill and Frank’s relationship, but also to point out that even someone who has lost faith in humanity completely (Bill and Joel), they can still redeem themselves by finding a purpose and protecting the ones they care about (Frank and Ellie). I think the note that Ellie read summed that up pretty well.

I haven't played the games yet but I'm ready for assertive Joel to take over like we saw in episode 1 when it all went to pot. In three episodes he's lost his daughter, his sort of girlfriend/partner, and trading buddies Bill and Frank. Tess and the guys want him to live for something greater than just survival. Smart writing will have him become the man Ellie needs him to be to honor all their relationships and memories. Let's hope it pans out.
Just a heads from the game... don't be surprised or disappointed if Joel gets sidelined for an extended period while Ellie gets to do more. Not a bad thing... there was a reason for it in the story and it made everything feel more tense and desperate.
The Last of Us is supposed to be Joel’s story and seen through his pov, other characters weave in and out of his journey but it is still meant to be his journey. Three episode’s in and it’s everybody else’s story and Joel is effectively just for the ride🤷♂️

WELP, I'm here from the future to tell you that you unfortunately called it. Joel is a weak, emasculated, dumbed down, husk of what we all know him from in the first game. And there is no relationship between Joel and Ellie, just two people next to each other that appear to be more in competition or comparison the entire series.
First thing I noticed when Bella first showed up, is that her face is like a mask. Smooth featureless and shows no emotion. No signs of stress nor hardships. I agree with your assessment on the the other characters.
Druckmann retconning Bill and Frank’s relationship. Frank made quite clear how he feels in a note left for Bill that Joel finds and it ain’t all sunshine and butterflies.
Neil Druckman will find any excuse in the book to put his politics into a story. You tell him there was a gay character in the game, and that's all he needs to go apeshit for an entire episode.
Most of the conservative bitch boy maga chuds are just mad they showed a positive gay relationship and are mad about ellie because they don't like the look of the actress. But like all liars they pretend their animus is based on something more substantive like her characterization
I actually liked that retcon. It was clear that the show was a bit different than the game, and turning Bill and Frank’s vague and spiteful relationship into a tale of love changing Bill for the better, giving him a reason to live. It kinda reminded me of the opening scene from Up, only much darker.
I believe that this is what the first game would have been if Druckmann had complete freedom on the story. The first game went so good because there were other people that put stops to some of his ideas and improved on them, what I understand about the second games story, most of the people working on it were yes men for Druckmann, he had complete freedom on the story.
From what I remember there was a different guy that was the game director on the 1st and Neil was just a writer so didn't really get a final say on anything which is how it should've stayed
My favorite part of TLOU is hands down the start of the infection. Playing that at night with a large glass door nearby will make you paranoid real quick

Ellie: "I'm a strong independant teenage girl who don't need no father!"
I cant think of any movies that fit this description can you please name some
They also need to be ugly-- I-- I mean-- uh-- um-- "not conventonally attractive by normalized social metrics". I'm 100% certain that's one major reason they cast Bella Ramsey. HBO probably wanted to go with Maisie Williams since she... kinda... has a proven acting range in an ensemble cast setting, but since she's like 30 now they were like "nah, need a younger chick plus Maisie Williams is kinda cute so definitely not, who else do we have on the short list from our GoT pool?"
The intersectionalist crowd really hate fit and attractive people.

In a post apocalyptic world the gay minority would become even more a minority, then they will be spread out in groups of survivors. Not to mention homesexuality might become outlawed to encourage procreation to start civilization over.
Even the apocalypse has to be politically correct
when you put it that way...
The thing that made Bella Ramsey good in GoT is how this little kid had a deadpan, monotone, authoritative kind of attitude you wouldn’t expect coming out of a kid. That’s a problem here, because Ellie is a very vibrant and expressive character.
She kinda sucked in GoT but it's not her fault
Didn't realize she was in that. Was she like 12?
Also the actress looks nothing like Ellie from the game, with her humongous forehead and massive face.
Ellie is also a cute kid...Bella just isn't pretty.
She looks kinda inbred tbh, which is why she worked so well on GOTR.

@@7ars471 but in his actual review he said that it actually became better?
Bill surviving would make us empathize deeper with Bill and really deliver on how destitute the
TLOU world is.
Ikr? I thought they didn't like the "happy ending" route like what they did to Abby but somehow this episode is "the best" 🤣
Bro they cannot put all the dialogue
Im very happy with the Ep 3 we got, but yes I also would have loved some interaction between them. That sequence in the game is awesome.
The Rock needs a new job
Abby wont be white.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who feels that Bella Ramsey as Ellie just feels somewhat off. You hit the nail on the head. Ellie should have been the most important casting decision and I feel like they chose a popular actress who somewhat fit over someone who could've really embodied the role.
Bella is a fantastic actress, it's really just the writing if there's any Ellie problem, not her fault at all
This girl is popular? Why?
@@RM_VFX she played a notable role in Game of Thrones
@Monkeypaw??? could be the fault of the writing. All I know is that something about the character feels a bit off. Hopefully that will clear up in future episodes.

This review is aging well already, particularly regarding Ellie calling the shots and ignoring Joel's orders.
ep 3 allready confirmed it. I cringed when bill refered to the gov as "nazi's" and the jackson community is communism ....
I'm sorry but when does Ellie ever "call the shots" in this show. She's a bratty teen and has an attitude, but she's not giving Joel orders, lol.
Recreated scenes don’t translate to faithfulness
Joel: changed from a gun runner to a battery runner, doesn’t hunt down and break Robert’s leg before torturing him for answers and instead just finds him dead, isn’t a twisted man who instead gets angry at Tess after finding out she’s infected but instead a defeated man who is cold to the fact
Tess: no longer kills the men who Robert hired to jump her but instead works out the misunderstanding and is let go, isn’t the ruthless and respected criminal that had abandoned hope until seeing Ellie’s mark and pleading to Joel that there’s enough between them that he has to feel obligated to get Ellie to his brother, that is before she then refuses to become an infected and stands her ground against the militia that ultimately shoot her down
Infected: no longer any spores, now share a hive mind, no longer cry or contribute to Tess’ story about how the people might still be alive but not in control
Ellie: no longer an emotionally vulnerable kid being traded around and defensive of those she cares about, now an overconfident and constantly snarky girl
Marlene: no longer is she the only firefly to survive the ambush but she also doesn’t know Ellie this time around after having been a friend of her mother and seen her grow up, to the degree where she has to chain her, but instead captured Ellie after she was found with the bite mark
Bill: no longer the bitter, controlling man who begrudgingly helps Joel out after being indebted to him and feels betrayed by Frank running off
Frank: no longer revealed to have come to hate bill and feel suffocated, trying to escape and instead getting bitten and then deciding to hang himself
No longer are Joel and Tess gun runners, no longer do the militia pursue them to the capitol building, no longer does Tess beg of Joel to take Ellie to Tommy (having been a firefly) and instead to just take her as far as bill (because apparently bill would care), no longer does Joel immediately tell Ellie upon Tess’ death to stay silent and do everything he says when he says it (instead he now does this days into their journey), no longer can Ellie reveal her immunity through openly breathing spores as that concept has been excised altogether and no longer is Ellie remotely comparable to Sarah which is the whole point and neither is the story told through Joel’s pov and instead he’s just one of many - all these decisions snowballing into greater problems down the line
The only reason for people to think that it’s being faithful at all is that they only have a superficial recollection of events and can’t immediately see the changes to not only the story but the characters
💀
n o l o n g e r
All good stuff.
This has also been my impression so far.

It's the equivalent of spending several days raising chickens in your backyard while knowing your angry neighbor will release his pitbull and bulldog into your backyard to waste your chickens during a weekend.
I think next episode will be the make or break for the series.
Ellie's reaction to hostile humans (which she isn't accustomed to, unlike zombies) will determine if the character can show vulnerability and not be "perfect". Either way, well know the show's future for sure after that one

No worries, they'll brand you a "homophobe" no matter what your legit reasons are.
Dude, say what you like and share if you choose. Ignore the sheep.
yeah the same. its even worse with this show bcuz TLOU fanbase is prolly one of the most hated fanbase in gaming industry mainly bcuz many of these fanboys gave tlou2 10/10 ignoring pacing issues, lack of logic and repetetivegameplay.

Totally agree. Joel & Ellie’s relationship is very worrying for the future of this show
I'm being glass half full here - but maybe that's to show even greater drama later on.

In the sequel of them in part 2. She is actually a villain... so that explains alot. Cuz revenge is bad.

I think they might be trying to go the opposite way with her character
From dialogue I think they want her to start arrogant and reckless because of her immunity, but slowly make her more vulnerable and careful as she has close calls with death. Like tess' line, being immune to the fungus doesn't make you immune to being ripped apart

Joel looks like an extra form Walking Dead, monotone and looking off into the distance when talking to people, Shane Walsh style. YAWN

Agree, they missed the mark with that casting choice.

Not gonna lie that Indonesia part was boring af like we all know the apocalypse happened and we are 20 years into it
Personally, Bella Ramsey is a fine actress… a little weird looking with those tiny eyes, though. I blame the lame jokes and edgy attitude written for her. Horrible 🤢
I think she is doing a great job. She's just a kid. Judging her looks should be off limits for adults. I think she is playing the character very well.

So far I'm satisfied, but I worry things will start to fall flat as the story progresses.
I’m sacred too… they forgot about the basics. That they are living in an apocalyptic world with people trying to survive!
It's just going to turn into brave strong women vs religious zealot drama.
Just check out now. You've been warned
I made three predictions about this show before episode 1 released.
1 Joel would be a metrosexual wimp
2 there would be almost no infected scenes featured.
@@markbrowning4334 it was not Neil creation along, rumour has it , the other guy had more of an input.
Bruh Ellie in the live adaptation looks more like a 3d rendered gaming character than the gaming character herself.
This is spot on
She certainly has the biggest forehead on streaming right now. 😲😂
She's Playstation 1 levels of realism. Even Picasso wouldn't have painted her.
The writers told Bella Ramsey not to play the game... Should that tell us something?
You just said she basically only plays the same role with different backgrounds. Is it possible she's simply young and not very talented?
She certainly goes out of her way to push The Message, so I don't see how she gets a pass here as some kind of victim. As an aside that is.
Kaitlyn Dever should have played Ellie - more alike looks and better acting.
Ellie in the game was down to fight and kill, but they are already changing it to have Bella show she may enjoy the violence.
It is unfortunate as Elllie is a well drawn character in the game. She shows weakness and strength as a 14 year old girl. Her facial expressions and eyes are able to express so much emotion. The bonding of Joel and Ellie is a central theme, as well as their growth as individuals.
The girl playing her looks like a balloon with eyes. It takes something to be less expressive than a bit of £D rendering, but she manages it
Unfortunately the actress for Ellie in the show is the ugliest girl I’ve ever seen, also her performance is terrible
Ellie in the games was a full grown adult playing a teen. Bella Ramsy is a teen trying to convey adult emotions. You should give them a break for trying to compete with a whole ass adult with a lifetime of experience.
@@andyrwebman you probably look like a balloon with eyes, but okay dude
Ellie's actress is too fugly. That's a weird face.

Bill from the the show would not survive a day in the game.
True and wheres all the infected? Joel and Ellie driving away at the end of this episode listening too linda ronstadt definitely makes the world seem less dangerous on the show than it is in the games.

Show us on the chart where he hurt you
The first three eps have covered a part in the game that Ellie didn’t really even in the games have much to work with.
@@1978JWJ different but same same haha. I know what you mean but the biggest moments in the relationship are still to come so there’s hope for sure.
Thoughts on episode 4? I thought it was really good.
I mean they could show it in 10 minuted not 1.30 hours
And they had to use up 10% of the shows runtime for that??
The point is to push the usual propaganda. But at least it shows us early where the show is headed.

It's not a good sign when an animated video game character has more expressions than an actress.
pretty sure she was created in a lab with other child actors
Druckmann retconning Bill and Frank’s relationship. Frank made quite clear how he feels in a note left for Bill that Joel finds and it ain’t all sunshine and butterflies.
Neil Druckman will find any excuse in the book to put his politics into a story. You tell him there was a gay character in the game, and that's all he needs to go apeshit for an entire episode.
@@dock7777 it is HIS story and since he’s working on the show, that’s about as authoritative as it gets for a retcon
Why do you prefer that version?
I believe that this is what the first game would have been if Druckmann had complete freedom on the story. The first game went so good because there were other people that put stops to some of his ideas and improved on them, what I understand about the second games story, most of the people working on it were yes men for Druckmann, he had complete freedom on the story.
Bruh have you not seen what Druckman originally planned TLOU to be? Straley and Hennig def only helped the plot from Neil’s original flawed vision
From what I remember there was a different guy that was the game director on the 1st and Neil was just a writer so didn't really get a final say on anything which is how it should've stayed
