TIMELAPSE: Couple Building a YURT in 15 Minutes // Off Grid Living

  • This video is a timelapse of how to build a yurt. We bought our yurt from Pacific Yurts (located in Forest Grove, OR). -- www.yurts.com/ -- It is a 30 ft. yurt. When you buy a yurt from Pacific Yurts, you get the yurt kit but not the platform. We show you how to build a yurt from start to finish including the yurt platform.
    We built our yurt almost completely on our own. Our kids helped here and there, but they are only 9 so they are limited to how much they can do. We also had one of our great friends, Emily, come and help us when we raised the roof ring, placed the roof rafters, and put on the top cover and side cover. Two people can definitely build a yurt on their own, but having the extra set of hands was a great help.
    Our yurt will be our tiny house as we build our cabin in 2021. We will have it be off grid so we do not have to permit it. When a 30 ft yurt is complete, it is about 750 square feet of living space, but we also plan to build a loft in the yurt for additional living space.
    And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on RUclips. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 8 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
    Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
    Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@zacharysmith9472 the yurt took about 3 weeks in real time. 1.5 weeks for the platform and 1.5 weeks for the walls/cover/roof. Really the hard work comes after the assembly of figuring out how you'll heat it. If you'll plumb it and run electrical, and how you'll design it.

      Thank you! The dogs definitely help. Lol! We've lived in the yurt for almost a year now, and the bugs have been VERY low that make it into the yurt so the perimeter edge must help with that. We also sealed it with a foam strip when we screwed down the skirting. And we have been SO impressed with how dry the yurt has stayed. With the pellet stove going it stays very low on the moisture side!

We don’t know what type of flooring we will have, do you have any suggestions, will be building in the desert. Of Joshua tree.The people at Pacific Yurts told us it would take about 3 to 4 days to put up.. but of course that’s not taking into affect the time to build a base. I will look at your whole video to see the “dull moments” 🤣.. depending on the land, will determine if we are using solar panels, batteries, or electricity. We will probably have a lot of questions. Awesome video! I just started installing the beams for the platforms for 2 30’ yurts. What nails did you use for the t&g floor? I was planning on 2 3/8” ring shank.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад

      We used 3 1/4” framing nails drove in at the tongue. It’s worked well but if I had to do it again I’d take the time to put down construction adhesive at each nail point.
      Good luck on your build.

      2 years ago it cost us about $5,000 to build the platform, I'm sure it would be significantly more today with the increased lumber prices. I'd guess $8k - $10k. This was for our 30' yurt.

      @darrelljacobjr2120 2 года назад

      While these tents are commonly referred to as Yurts...yurts have rafters which curve downwards just before the sidewall...this design with straight rafters is called a Ger.
      Dig holes three feet deep, put in a tire, fill with dirt, tamp well, use lag bolts to screw through the sidewall of the next tire, screwing it to the first one, repeat until you are 2 feet above grade. This will give you almost free footings that go below the frost line, which will prevent the floor buckling in the winter.
      Either make a mechanism which will raise the clear plexiglass dome on the roof ring, so you can vent heat when it's hot outside, or just use the cloth cover the Mongolians used for centuries.
      Build a Rocket Mass Heater, with the thermal mass built into the wood deck to save space, so you can heat the Ger efficiently all winter.

    You guys inspired us so much I am picking up our yurt from Pacific Yurts in spring. Ryan what was the dimensions of your trailer that you picked the yurt up with , need to make sure mine will do the job. Thanks again.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  3 года назад

      Our trailer is 12' 5" but has an open back and Pacific Yurts recommended a 14’ but they were able to load ours just fine. I did attach a piece of board to the back of the trailer but honestly I’m not sure it did any good. The rafters on our 30’ were 14’ 10” so there was a significant overhang, but it was still legal in Oregon/Washington. Excited for you guys! What size did you get?

      @@OneFootOfftheGrid Thanks for the response! Yes we bought the 30 ft. as well, so I saw the rafters are just short of 15 feet . Our property is also in WA state but in the mountains.

    We have a 16 ft yurt from Pacific Yurt. I noticed that you insulated the floor and the roof, but not the walls. (We did all three surfaces and are also in the PNW). How did you decide about which surfaces to insulate?

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid

      We insulated the floor in the areas that would be hard to reach once the floor was on. We came back and completed the rest of the insulation once the yurt was assembled.

    Did you have to purchase the land to create a yurt just like when some decide to build an off grid home? Curious to know

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  Год назад

      You definitely need somewhere that you can legally put it up. We already owned 5 acres of land and that is where we built our yurt. We checked in with the permitting office in our county before we purchased the yurt, as well, to make sure this kind of structure was allowed.

    Hello! Me and my family are going to start a community farm with many yurts and one huge yurt for religious purposes, I tried to gather as much as I could from the video but if it isn't to much to ask what are some things that made the job a whole lot easier?

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  2 года назад +1

      Very smart to ask these questions before trying to install. A couple of the most important ones:
      1. Have more help than you think. The covers are extremely heavy. I'd say having 4-5 people would make it go pretty smoothly.
      2. Use a scaffolding. I've seen people place the center ring with only using ladders, but the scaffolding make things so much easier.
      3. Think about unfolding the cover first and then refolding. Ours what so stuck together it made it almost impossible to unfold. We put some baby powder between the folds to make it easier to install (the second time).
      4. Platform - Use construction adhesive to secure the boards to the joists to prevent squeaks.

      With the platform, add ons, isulation, and our used pellet stove, we are right around $20,000 put into the yurt. This is a 30 ft. yurt, so you can get smaller models, and you can choose less or more add ons.

      We were able to put up the yurt in our county as an "unpermitted structure" as long as the platform height wasn't more than 30" high and we didn't have permanent electrical or plumbing ran to the structure.
